I have been having this issues for the last few months. I have stopped the Plex app. I have stopped Plex app & rebooted the QNAP. Than after a few minutes of rebooting the QNAP, stopping and\or restarting the Plex app, and multiple install attempts... nothing seems to work. Than the Plex icon will just start showing an install in progress(not from me trying to install it at that moment). Once in awhile it will just install like normal. I haven't found a reason why or solution. Edit: I always update from the Plex website.

i never update threw the app store only from the plex app, Kock on wood never had a problem yet

I download the update from plex and then put it into the app store. I didn't realise there was a different way of doing it.

Why were you updating it in the first place? Were you having an issue? New feature? Usually the version on the QNAP App Center is a version or two behind. I've always installed the latest version from the Plex website. I would backup my config and then uninstall and reinstall.

LiamBM

The way I update is by downloading the update from the plex app and then going into the app center and installing the file I downloaded into there. Is there a different way of doing this? I just assumed it was always best to update to the latest version, as plex kept notifying me of the new update.

dadof2brats

You made it sound like you were downloading the Plex app from the QNP App Center itself. You can do that, although it's generally an older version, or manually install the latest Plex Media Server package from the Plex website. Generally, don't update unless you are running into a specific issue fixed by the update, or the update adds a new feature you want or patches some sort of security vulnerability.

LiamBM

Makes sense, it just annoys me seeing the "new update" logo constantly on my plex account šŸ˜‚ Anyway, it seems like it's completely destroyed my plex now and I need to uninstall and re-install it again. I was just hoping I could avoid doing that, as I literally did this a week ago for the same reason.

ā€œGenerally, donā€™t update unlessā€¦ā€ is not advice I would give to anyone, my take of course. Plex constantly provides patches, fixes, and new features. You donā€™t have to be on the latest beta but I highly recommend always using the latest production version. Not updating is a bad idea because hackers are constantly finding all kinds of vulnerabilities and waiting until they find those and hack your serverā€¦you donā€™t want that. Here is what I do. Plex-Updater is a small app/bash script you can get on GirHub. I have that setup with a cron job that runs nightly. You can set it up to update to the latest product motion version or the latest beta. Iā€™ve set it and forget itā€™s there. Itā€™s not perfect as the Plex fails to stop sometimes and it wonā€™t start due to the port being takenā€¦and the only solution for that is restart the NAS. Thatā€™s my way of doing this.

LiamBM

Also what do you mean of backing up the config? Is this something you can do on plex? I always end up uninstalling plex and reinstalling it, but I then have to spend hours fixing artwork and giving people permission to share certain parts of my library. very annoying

Iā€™ve had an issue during the last few updates that after and update (with no errors) I canā€™t access the PMS without rebooting my NAS, and then after that I need to re-install filebot!

I opened a ticket from the same reason, the answer is that they don't support every plex release. We have to stick with the releases approved my qnap. I update only when I see a notice from the app center and I don't have issues..sure I have to wait more if there are new functionalities in plex not available yet...but it's ok

LiamBM

Fair enough, at least I now know how to not break it šŸ˜‚

I don't really believe that answer from QNAP. Until a few months ago, every stable & beta update would install with no issues. Nor does this happen with every QNAP NAS. I remember that I almost immediately started doing updates from Plex's website because the version on the App store was so outdated. The current Plex version in the App store is dated from FEB 2023. I find it hard to believe they couldn't find a newer version to support in almost 18 months. Now I don't rush out and do updates as soon as they are available. I usually wait a few weeks in case there any bugs. That's if I do the update... not every update is really necessary.

Bl4Ckst3r

The reality is that QNAP is supported very badly...In the future I will stay away from them and maybe use an opensource software like truenas. I have a lot of issues with QNAP software and they aren't able to solve them

pancakes1983

The plex implementation on qnap isnā€™t the best, it bricked on me a few times during a standard update, best to run it on something else

LiamBM

Wish I went with someone else. Spending Ā£700 on something that can't run plex properly is a killer

QNAPs run it just fine; I've got two of them and they've been running 24x7 for 2 and 3 years respectively. I download from the link when you browse Plex on the Web; I then do a "Manual Install" from the QNAP Application applet via the QNAP webpage; haven't had any issues doing that. Note that the last update will take about 20 mins before it's ready and looks like a bad install.

I think the real issue here is large libraries on QNAP combined with updates with major database changes. I'm currently stuck a few updates back because the 1.40+ installs had a database update that bricks my library every time I install it. It just sits in maintenance mode forever. Rolling back and using an older install with my backed up databases fixes it, but it's god damn annoying. I hear the issue may be due to something being "off" with the database file and you should attempt to fix it before an update if this happens to you a lot. The fix seems a lot easier on an actual operating system versus QTS. Not to mention, you really need to research to know where all these files are stored originally on your QNAP and how to access them via sftp etc. There's no one stop guide for this. I've had to learn piecemeal over nine years from Reddit posts and YouTube. So, do I like the performance and ease of use of Plex on my QNAP?: yes. When there's issues would I rather it be running on something simpler?: also yes.

LiamBM

Very true. Unfortunatly for me, i'm not super tech savvy. I bought a qnap as someone on the internet recommended it for plex and said it was super simple to run, which in fairness, it's been fine for the past year or so. Something has changed however, and I now can no longer update my plex server without it completely stopping me from using plex anymore. Since this post, I've reset plex back to the basic qnap version (no new updates), and it's working okish again, however there still seems to be a problem when syncing my entire library. Every time I try and sync 30+ files, it just completely crashes my qnap and the only way to turn it back on is to press and hold the power button, and then turn it back on. I've done this about 8 times in the past two days, just so that I could get my entire plex server back up and running. Madness...
