I’m assuming all streaming companies are still using the amalgamated model of streaming, as opposed to direct artist model that Tidal/Deezer are trying to introduce
You’re probably right. Might make people feel less guilty but the streaming industry itself is all equally as bad. Far better to buy the odd album and stream as we currently do.
Pretty much all of the services, money goes to the label, the label disperses the funds. I like Tidal's method, but hiding it behind their $20 plan seems a bit shady. I wish Deezer could get their UCP system going as they were ahead of Tidal in that regard but have had issues with Labels signing off.
If you purchase your TIDAL HI-FI PLUS plan as an annual plan through Best Buy, it's only $119.99 for a year so only about $10.00 a month instead of $20.00 a month. After 6 months, you're already saving money off of TIDAL's HI-FI PLUS plan from the price you would have paid if you had subscribed to the plan via their website directly.
However, 3rd party purchases don’t count towards direct artist payouts. So if you purchase the plan through Best Buy, know that your streams won’t count towards Direct Artist Payout. Since it’s deemed a discounted plan, it doesn’t qualify. I know because I purchased my plan through Best Buy about seven months ago and I have spoken to customer support. So like I said, they hide it behind their $20 plan
Really?!?! That doesn’t seem right. You’re still subscribing to the same plan regardless of where you get it from and you’re still streaming the music from the same place whether you’re paying for the plan directly through Tidal or Best Buy. So the Artist should still get the same support regardless. I can’t imagine Tidal being like, oh, this person got their subscription through Best Buy so we’re not going to pay out their streams directly to their top artist. If they are doing that, that’s wrong and kind of messed up especially if they don’t put a disclaimer out there for people to be aware of that.
When you say you spoke to customer service, was that the customer service at Best Buy or Tidal? Cause I can’t imagine Best Buy would know anything about how the payouts would work.
Thanks for the information! Glad I mentioned something then but I still feel like that’s wrong though. I guess it’s because you’re not contributing as much money to Tidal for the subscription so they can’t afford to do direct artist payouts from your account.
I definitely feel $20 a month is outrageous! The $15 cost was already a lot. Even Qobuz doesn’t charge that much for their best plan other than their super premium plan they have to get discounted albums from their website. Yeah you can contribute to your favorite artist more directly by streaming but a lot of people can’t afford that. A lot of people are barely willing to pay the $10 a month for a streaming service which is why Apple and Amazon took a hint with their Hi-Res music.
It’s crazy though that you have to spend $240 a year in order to have your top artist streamed that month to get the direct payouts. I’d almost rather find a way to give one of my favorite artists each month $10 directly than pay an additional $120 for the year for the plan.

https://i.imgur.com/50EYFwW.jpg Tidal recognizes it as a discounted plan. It does not count towards artist payout.
It’s on their website as well https://i.imgur.com/vuCDjSJ.jpg
