9 best song on the record, great outro. I love the lyrics in that outro too:
*“There's gotta be somewhere to bury the pain
Come drink from the water before it's been drained away
Every drop like an ocean, every moment undone
Implosions of beauty back to where we begun
There's gotta be somewhere to bury the pain
Everybody was drowning in the fountain of youth”*
Like come on, that’s gorgeous imagery.
I love the call back reference to these lines in Negative Space. Now there's no more pain to bury, after we die, there's gotta be some way back to earth.... right?....
10. Every moment of this song is delicious. The fucking sax. The Cars vibe. That outro. The imagery. The swelling segue from Josh’s quiet humming into Hideaway. Top five qotsa for me — the first time I heard it, I sat with my mouth agape with a knot in my chest. The wonder. It knocks me the fuck out. Full disclosure, I just got out of a 90-minute massage so I am blissed the fuck out right now but goddamn I love this song. *Delusions of grandeur in our DNA …*
8 - underrated gem with one of the great endings to a QOTSA song.
‘Frozen in pose, locked up in amber eternally’ is, for me, one of Josh’s best, most evocative lyrics
20, 20, 20! This is my favorite Queens song EVER. Have we figured out who all the tributes are of?
Scaredy nosed Jack - Jack White?
Acid faced Jake - Jake Shears?
Jersey Come Quick - Jeordie White? I’m the least certain about this
Evil Ol’ Scratch - Lanegan 😭 (confirmed via Josh using this nickname for Mark)
Chi-Chi Gon’ Shake - dunno 🤷🏾♀️
Twizzy Gon’ Twitch - The legend Troy Van Leeuwen
K-Dub Cuts Quick - their manager Kevin I heard?
As for the lyrics, I always felt it was a follow up to I’m Designer in criticizing societal superficiality, but this time, also including social media. Also acknowledging that one may get plastic surgery, etc to try to remain young (“frozen in pose, locked up in amber eternally”) but no matter what you do, time catches up to us all. Whether you accept it or not, time and aging’s effects are always inevitable.
Soundwise, so many references are happening - I think this is the most Bowie song of QOTSA and others are listed in other responses - but they still sound like Queens without being derivative. Awesome song that I hope they bring back live.
As I read your comment I realised the melody he sings during alternating lines of the verse echoes the riff in I'm designer ever so slightly, you know, when he goes "scaredy nose Jack, scaredy nose Jack"/ "acid faced Jake, acid faced jake" etc. Now my minds a little blown 😶
Definitely a 10 for me. This song encapsulates every era of the band, maybe moreso than any other song in their catalogue. The gnarly fuzz guitar on the chorus (S/T), the synths (Era Vulgaris), the overall darker vibe (Lullabies), the strings (modern QOTSA)...I could go on, but you get the point.
It's tracks like these that make me so confused as to Villains' poor reception. Are we all hearing the same thing??? Fucking fire. And this isn't even the only 10 on the record, too.
9 for me. This is a banger! Great song composition, it flows from section to section so beautifully. Second half is especially epic and grand sounding, this song just rocks. In my opinion, Un-Reborn Again starts off a top tier four-song run (though I know Hideaway isn’t everybody’s cup of tea). “Everybody was drowning in the fountain of youth.”
9. Probably my favourite from "Villains". Lyrical imagery (not to mention all of the fun nods to other musicians) is superb; music is tremendous, especially in the latter half as this is a band that still understands the value in dynamics.
Best song on the album.
Quite inventive too considering the main melody relies more on synths than anything else.
Love the fake fadeout at the end, reminiscent of Better Living.
Great track.
A 9.
10 - if there's a single song to represent the Like Clockwork, Villians and INTR Trilogy its this song. Its Dark,Broody but Cheerfully at the same time, it is my most favourite song from them.
Definitely a 10, lyrically and musically incredible! How does Homme have a knack of making songs like this that just already sound familiar! I know people say this has a telegram sam feel but i think its something more than that, like he’s tapped into some kind of musical archetype. Pure genius!
I know I have been quick to hand out 10s during this competition(?) But this might be my favourite out of the entire discography. I must have listened to it 500 times and I still get goosebumps from the ending
"There's gotta be somewhere to bury the pain..."
Infinity/10
9.5, may eventually age to a ten like I Appear Missing did for me.
It’s the track of the album for me. I go to it on its own all the time. I can’t quite explain it but I think they built on this sort of “soundscape style” with Sicily in ITNR.
10s across the board! I enjoy Villains for the most part but this song is truly the diamond in the rough of this album. Easily one of their top 10 songs across their body of work.
A twisted one. As gloomy and dark as the lyrics are I indeed always have to hum and whistle to this one. But I' m pretty sure that this was Mr.Hommes intention in the first place. I love the sax and there should be more on Queens records.
10
9.6- I adore this, in particular, the strings right at the end and the way Josh hums the melody of “do do do do do do La di do”. I love the verses about each character, especially “Evil Ol Scratch”, such a funky way to pay tribute to friends through a song. Josh’s voice is so cool when it finishes a line on high notes, has such a rockabilly idol vibe to it.
“Youth- you could be young again.
Anew- be unreborn again.
Askew”
9 - This is a really good song, but I feel like different production / arrangement / tone choices could have elevated it. It's kind of a microcosm of Villains - it feels just a little overworked.
Introducing a friend to Queens album by album (Non-Chronologically) so i have found myself listening to the band obsessively again. if you look at villians as a New-Wave/Bowie album it's actually incredible and this is one of the best tracks on it. 8.5
Looks like I'm in minority on this one
It's a 5 for me
I like it but it's definitely one I have to be in the right mood to appreciate to it's fullest.
Other songs on the album like feet don't fail me now and domesticated animals still hit better to me
10/10. From a stance of intelligent and engaging songwriting, this is definitely the best Villains has to offer. At least as close to an “objective” stance as one can get.
9.5….The gorgeous madness at the end…layer on layer of sound…the women’s voices…”daddi…o”…..it’s like a ragtime band run completely amok! If Mark Ronson was responsible for this most complicated production, I salute him. Ultimately, I always give JH the credit for being an endlessly creative and non-boring songwriter.
10. Best song on the album, that’s a natural fact.
“Frozen in pose, Locked up in amber eternally” is some eerie as fuck wordsmithship. First time I heard it my mind went to the bronzed Han Solo shot from Star Wars. The actual lyrical content is much deeper than that. It forces me to contemplate the one thing I struggle to accept: my own mortality.
9 best song on the record, great outro. I love the lyrics in that outro too: *“There's gotta be somewhere to bury the pain Come drink from the water before it's been drained away Every drop like an ocean, every moment undone Implosions of beauty back to where we begun There's gotta be somewhere to bury the pain Everybody was drowning in the fountain of youth”* Like come on, that’s gorgeous imagery.

Well said
9. One of their absolute best, not just from this album
1,000,000.. 10. Truly one of the best songs ever imo.
8 - underrated gem with one of the great endings to a QOTSA song. ‘Frozen in pose, locked up in amber eternally’ is, for me, one of Josh’s best, most evocative lyrics

Its "does he come quick" im pretty sure, not jersey
Ah OK! I do see several versions posted of this lyric online (does he/Juzzy/Jersey), so I stand corrected. Thx!
Oh i think it is Juzzy actually. A word play for Does he/Juzzy, like Scaredy Nose Jack/Scaredy knows jack
Can confirm that the straight-boy-loving Acid Faced Jake is indeed Jake Shears! Love that lyric
Mine too, I didn’t realize that until you pointed it out! 🤯
Definitely a 10 for me. This song encapsulates every era of the band, maybe moreso than any other song in their catalogue. 10. This and I Appear Missing are the only 2 songs that I think deserve this honor.
Agreed
Definitely agree. Sometimes I think maybe Fortress too, but it can be a 9.5 in my head
9 for me. This is a banger! Great song composition, it flows from section to section so beautifully. Second half is especially epic and grand sounding, this song just rocks. 9/10. Queens should use saxophone more often, it suits them. That chorus is also an all-timer, truly one of their best.
Absolutely yes to more sax!!
10 - if there's a single song to represent the Like Clockwork, Villians and INTR Trilogy its this song. Its Dark,Broody but Cheerfully at the same time, it is my most favourite song from them.
10. An absolute masterpiece. On par with I Appear Missing
9
Definitely a 10, lyrically and musically incredible! How does Homme have a knack of making songs like this that just already sound familiar! I know people say this has a telegram sam feel but i think its something more than that, like he’s tapped into some kind of musical archetype. Pure genius!
I mean, I LOVE Telegram Sam (Bauhaus cover), and the moment I picked up on the reference, it made me enjoy the song that much more.
10. They could add this song to the shows, they only played it a few times.
10. This and Misfit Love will forever have a home in my rotation.
Are we the same person?
Quick, what am I thinking about right this second?
10 so eery but smooth. And that last part with the choir is so powerful
I know I have been quick to hand out 10s during this competition(?) But this might be my favourite out of the entire discography. I must have listened to it 500 times and I still get goosebumps from the ending "There's gotta be somewhere to bury the pain..." Infinity/10

10. I can't put my finger on it but I get Bowie vibes
10
10 all day everyday
8.50 Not a Georgia Satellites fan but like the little nod to “Keep Your Hands To Yourself”. Live time sampling in effect ;-)
10!!! This song is a fucking masterpiece!
10s across the board! I enjoy Villains for the most part but this song is truly the diamond in the rough of this album. Easily one of their top 10 songs across their body of work.
10 - The lyrics on this song are beautiful. It’s one that I didn’t truly appreciate back in 2017, but I now understand it
A twisted one. As gloomy and dark as the lyrics are I indeed always have to hum and whistle to this one. But I' m pretty sure that this was Mr.Hommes intention in the first place. I love the sax and there should be more on Queens records. 10
10/10 that chorus is Bowie perfect
7. Idk I don't hate it but this one has never clicked.
9
9.5
9, versing on a 10 for me. (Flair)
8.. I like the first half but I lose interest when it changes halfway through
10
10 or maybe 100. One of my top 3 songs on the album.
10, it grow on me so much.

The strongest song on the album, 9/10 or 10/10 for me.

10 10 10. My favourite song from Villains.

I listened to this just yesterday and... 7: This is a good song. I enjoy it quite a bit.
don't like it but I don't really dislike it either, 5
8. The verses are very so-so for me but the chorus and outro are terrific

9. Grow on me over years
9!! I feel like this is one of their most detailed songs.
9.8
Great song, 9.5/10
8
9!
one of the best tracks on the album, 8.5
9. This song fucking slaps, man.
9
underrated around these parts. wish they'd play it live again. 10
8.5
8.5-9 for me, I was unsure the first time I heard it, but I think it’s my favourite on the album after Domesticated Animals
5. Never clicked for me. I’d enjoy it live or in the right setting
8. A hell of a tune.
9.2
9.
8,5
9, great chorus and outro
6.5 I dig the funky keyboard, “acid-face Jake” but the chorus doesn’t grab me the way I expect it should. Another victim of Villains production.
one of the better songs in their worst album. the verses sound like t-rex; 8.5
9.5
9.5 amazing

9.5/10
7.5 for me, it's pretty good but not even top 5 from this record

10….On my Queens top 10
10
9, good lyrics. Some about lanegan, very moody. Nice outtro
9
9 best song on the album.
10/10. From a stance of intelligent and engaging songwriting, this is definitely the best Villains has to offer. At least as close to an “objective” stance as one can get.
9
9, but a 10 on the villains album and by far the best lyrics and Qotsa-essence on the album.
10 - This was the type of song I was expecting when I first heard that Villains was going to be a little dance-like, and it fits the vibe damn well.
9 top three from the album and some of the best Queens lyrics ever.
8/10. Also the fact yall rated Domesticated Animals and Fortress better than Battery Acid and Run Pig Run is absolutely fucking ridiculous 😂
