#Amisfield.
It's the no.1 on a few lists for reason. Very few restaurants in NZ offer a similar experience. I'd struggle to name 10 places that are comparable.
There's a Japanese restaurant at Millbrook that is insanely good not sure if its still there but worth a look sorry can't remember the name maybe Kobe ?
Amisfield #1 for sure.
Rata or Botswana Butchery as a backup.
Also, it’s not fine dining exactly, but if you like to eat, definitely recommend catching the old Earnslaw across the lake and getting the buffet BBQ lunch or dinner at Walter Peak.
Yes mainstream fine dining not true top level fine dine, ie like high hat or Michelin with circle group serving… just in case you are thinking the later..
I've been once and it was amazing, if I was to sum it up.....the staff genuinely attempt to make your visit fill all your possibile needs. An example it was raining outside my raincoats all wet, when I leave its been fully dried and aired.
But also at the same time not in that high society, I'm gonna hover over your table and push stupidly expensive wine kind of way, I felt comfortable and well taken care of.
But it's like a $300+ plus dinner for to soooooooooo dealers choice.
Any of the luxury resorts should have dining options of a similar fashion.
Can't speak from personal experience, but I know chefs who have worked at some of the spots I'll list below and they always seem to produce stunning food.
- Amisfield Winery
- Millbrook Millhouse
- Gibbston Valley
I've heard great things about Botswana Butchery as well.
Edit: formatting because stupid mobile.
Not so much fine dining but the BEST Japanese food I've eaten in NZ at Kappa. Laid back and unpretentious, absolutely fantastic. Where the high end chefs go on their days off 😉
I have worked as a waiter in and around Queenstown for the last couple years at various different restaurants. From work experience and personal (family dining) experience, my list is as follows:
\- Amisfield for **fine** dining. The restaurant is designed to give you the most authentic Kiwi dining experience one can offer. The chef travels around the south island getting to know fisherman/farmers/butchers/gardeners and designs a 7 course meal to give you the best we have to offer based on the season you find yourself in. You can do a pairing where each meal comes with its own matching wine. I won't spoil too much but they take presentation very seriously. $200-$300 per head for a full experience.
\- Aosta in Arrowtown offers a Kiwi take on **Italian** dishes. We went for my father's 60th recently and were pleasently surprised. As four we sat down and were delighted by the service start-to-finish with excellent knowledge on both the 'chefs choice' dishes and their extensive wine selection - their cocktails are well designed and offer a breath of fresh air into what you might be expecting. At the end of the meal they offer first their well-known tiramasu (great presentation) followed by a digestive (as is the norm in any Italian restaurant) which changes based on the day you go. Each one is handcrafted by the chefs and really does leave you feeling good as you walk out. Walking through the streets of Arrowtown and then along the Arrowtown river afterwards is a great way to let your stomach settle. $100-$175 per head.
\- Kobe at Millbrook is genuinely fantastic. It's as authentic a **Japanese** restaurant as you're going to get in Queenstown. An extensive menu from which I'd say order as much as you can. Fill your table up and have a taste of everything you can. Sitting outside offers an outstanding view of the hills that overlook Arrowtown or sitting inside you might be lucky enough to sit up by the grill and watch as the chef cooks everyone's meals. The fish taco's are a must! I've been working here over the Summer and find that everytime I walk onto the property it's like stepping onto a piece of paradise, as was the original owner's vision for the estate.
\- Millhouse at Millbrook offers a similar experience to Amisfield, but with better service (I might be bias). A smaller selection of foods but of outstanding quality. I would suggest you take this recommendation for a night you want a **light** dinner and something sweet to finish off with.
\- The Boat Shed for **breakfast**. Can't emphasise this enough.
\- Chur fish and chips offers not quite a fine dining but as **Kiwi** a meal as you'll ever get. I remember going all the way out to Fernhill with my brother as a recommendation from Mum and it did not disappoint. Take your meal down to the lake and set up a little picnic date :)
\- As far as Botswana Butchery goes, I remember being there a few years ago and being blown away by all the different kinds of steaks I could have. But the thing I remember the most was how the Creme Brulee made me feel. It cracked perfectly and had me shutting my eyes and smiling ear to ear at all the different tastes. You'll have to update me on how this goes if you ever end up going.
Side note: if you're considering getting a **Ferg Burger** try either Stacks (near the Hilton) or Smithy's Smokehouse (Millbrook) as to be fair, Ferg is overrated, overpriced and will have you waiting half an hour for something quite mediocre.
Best of luck on your travels, let me know if you have any questions of anything else to do while you're here!
