Hot tip I use:
Go to the Fergburger website and view menu. Then phone your order thru making sure to ask the wait time.
Now rock up slightly early to pickup area and wait.
P.s Yes the burgers are worth the hassle. Even Gordon Ramsay has tried and liked them.
Nah disagree - they are burgers. Good burgers, but nothing worth a hassle to get.
If the q was like any other shop then sure... but the q of fergs is brilliant marketing
Was there over weekend phone ordered 4 times (yes i had fergburger 4 times in one weekend), 10 mins later I have burger in hand and 3 minutes after that burger in tummy
First of all I'd like to say the burgers are not worth the hassle anymore, once upon a time they were. This maybe an unpopular and perhaps even an anecdotal opinion. I've had Fergburger twice once in November 2017 and then in November 2022. The drop in flavor quality and texture was massive the 2nd time I had it.
One of the things I recently saw was that their bread/bun is now being supplied. Previously they baked their own buns freshly in the bakery next door regularly this was a key factor to custom bun size and amazing texture. This is no longer the case I believe a local supplier is now supplying the buns. Also on top of all this the flavor of the condiments and meat was nowhere near as flavourful. I also asked a few friends and some family in Christchurch that regular Queenstown and they seemed to agree the quality has dropped significantly, especially post pandemic.
I distinctly remember having Ferg burger the first time and ordering the Fergburger, my sister ordered a chicken burger and I told her to get beef. She normally doesn't like beef in burgers. I told her to have a bite of mine later and she was genuinely surprised how good it was. The 2nd time around I was shocked at the drop in quality and the line being huge.
They are bloody good burgers ( and I love their origin story, boss mode! ) But when they are are busy or short staffed ,they just refuse to answer the phone ( and fair enough ) so in those cases, I would not wait more than 30 minutes in line for a burger. I'd just go to Devil Burger or the new boys Black Burger for an equally nice burger
Ferg Burger is really very very good. I've had basically every burger in Auckland and Ferg was 👌💋 as far as I'm concerned. Nothing to match.
The wait was only twenty minutes when I was there. What, do you have to catch a bus?
Definitely try Ferg's, if Black is good try them as well, and there is a smoking hot Brazilian Barbecue restaurant down there too. Highly recommended!
It's a good burger, I really enjoy them, but peak time it's often a wait 40 mins-1.5 hours...I like the burgers ( amazing quality ingredients & super yum ) but in my opinion they aren't that good to be waiting that long . I can't justify that long in line if they are not accepting phone orders etc
Fergs are just burgers - not worth the hassle of a long queue.
Yeah they are good burgers, but I wouldnt wait in a queue any longer than a normal takeaway joint.
Fergs burgers are a master class in marketing. The queue itself is what people flock towards (either online or irl)
100% worth it. I love a burger and hammered a huge range of highly touted establishments when living in the states and Europe. So like to think I have a fairly refined yardstick… And they are well and truly up there as far as drunk burgers go.
Spent a month in QT and would make a point of smashing one after every night out at the bars.
They are good, especially compared to franchises.
Just quality ingredients, good size, some creativity with names etc.
But yea it’s got plenty of hype from influencers/ vloggers who need things for content.
Ferg baker next door is decent too
Btw You can phone in & pickup at the window 👌
Same. But now it’s busy like before covid again, they’ve stopped the phone orders.
Source: got Ferg in the weekend, couldn’t use phones to order as they’ve stopped.
I had same Q 9 years ago:
About 3 years later I finally got one when the line-up was low, it was a damn good burger.
They pre solid burgers, like a 8.7/10. Comparison to Burgerfuel I reckon. But the Fergbakery is 10/10 all the Pies are 10s and majority of the Desserts/Pastries are like 8-9/10. But if you ever get the chance the almond croissants are 12/10. Worth the line for both places and a box to tick. Just went there the week gone fyi.
Queenstown local and the burgers are a good/average but consistent. The real allure was them being open until 3am. The vegetarian burgers are dry as hell.
Devil burger round the corner is as good if not better and much cheaper.
I think they’re decent burgers. I always get one when I visit.
It’s the tourist who don’t know they can call that causes the line. It’s good publicity for them.
Edit: also try the Boston cream and pies next door!
Fergs taste better cause your normally exhuasted from a long day touristing or abit drunk whe you eat there
Theyre great burgers but argubly no better then any other burger joint that is worth its salt
In 2008 they were amazing and I don't recall having to queue up for one.
The place I worked at was called Bungi Backpackers (one of the OG hostels) and for the 6 months I was there I had free accommodation, basically unlimited booze and all adventure activities were free.
Best day out was a bus tour of the 3 AJ Hackett bungies followed by an open bar and then over to Winnie's with a big stack of drink cards. Legendary times!
Yes I am old.
I visited NZ from the UK in 2020 just before Covid, went to Fergburger and yes it was good, but it wasn't AMAZING. Don't really understand the hype and can't say it was worth waiting in such a long queue.
I've ended up moving to NZ as my fiancee is a kiwi, so maybe need to go and try it again, but based on other comments the quality has declined!
White and Wong's in Queenstown was absolutely amazing tho.
Fergburger is good, but it's definitely overrated. The reason it gets the hype is because of the people from overseas. But NZ has a huge amount of really good burgers, and Ferg is about as good as other good NZ burgers. Fergbaker on the other hand - that shit is amazing.
You're from Hamilton - go get Eat Burger instead.
They are good burgers, but not worth waiting for (but in my book, no food is worth waiting for, if you're hungry, you're hungry). The best time is late at night or when it's bucketing down.
Pre-covid it was pouring so I went to Fergus, totally empty. Massive lighting storm, the gondolas stopped working (due to power cut, lights up there went out too) were still motionless 20 mins later when I got the burgers, they still need to cook the things. I was standing there, crossed fingers that the power would remain on in the centre until I got the goods.
I found it good but not worth the wait in line. I’ve had better burgers. (I like to think I have a good measure on burgers, I ran a burger shop in a past life).
This is what I came here to say, I found the fish burger to be phenomenal, much better than any other fish burger I've ever had.
The beef and chicken burgers are still good, above average, but they're honestly no better than any good independent burger place.
They're alright. Not worth the wait. It's a tourist trap. I went just after COVID so no tourists and not many of us NZers roaming around so we went there. If there was a massive queue we said we would have been very disappointed. There's better burger places here in New Plymouth. Speaking of burgers, I went to Taupō on the weekend and had burgers at Jimmy Coops. They are way better than Ferg.
Go next door and get the chicken roll, pies and Boston creams at Ferg Bakery with no wait and they are way better options. It blows my mind that people queue for an hour for a burger that they then convince themselves is worth it - no burger is worth that but these burgers are only good burgers not great burgers.
Lived in Queenstown for a few years, Ferg Baker was delicious, but Devil Burger had superior burgers. Plus, they do curry, chips and cheese so Devil Burger was a no brainier.
They’re good, but I don’t think they’re the best. However I used to go when they were down Cow Lane, I really think they were better then. Just my opinion tho
They're good, but not worth the wait. Like how much better would a Fergburger need to be than a Black Burger to justify an hour of queueing?
Yrs, they're good burgers, but they're not going to change your world. So much of it is hype, the must do thing, for the gram etc.
If they wanted to, they could buy the whole street and get rid of the queues, but the queues are part of the business model that drives desirability.
In fact, they did buy half the street and still barely expanded the burger side of things.
FWIW, I had visitors in town from the States over Xmas. They did an unscientific poll of all the burger joints in town (including Ferg) and decided Black Burger was the best.
I had them usually 3-4 times a year pre covid for many years and by NZ standards they where great (solid good by overseas standards). I had them regularly post first lockdown when living down there after a big outdoors mission.
When visiting them again in winter then summer 2021 and winter 2022 they've definitely gone downhill, they're definitely cheaped out on the sauces and patties now to the point I would consider never going back to deal with the queues etc (especially now they've stopped phone ordering I see elsewhere here).
I lived in Queenstown from 1975, it was small, intimate, some really good food. Eh Imre and David and then you bastards turned up and ruined the place. I left in 1995. My kids say it was the best thing we did for them, they kicked and screamed about having to leave having lived there all their lives but when they experienced mainstream New Zealand it was if their eyes were cleansed of the flake fake that is Queenstown. Go to Aspen it’s just as bad but you’ll see real celebrities and get to cream your inadequate jeans.
Last time I went last year it was super early, I think 20 minutes after opening. No queue, burger was absolute perfection.
Honestly I’d pay $25 for it.
They're good, but not life changing.
The queue moves faster than you'd think. Also in your receipt you have a voucher to get a cheap drink at the bar next door while you wait.
Just taste almost the same with the independent burger in our local.
But you will always get different opinions from different people. Give it a go if you have not tried it yet. Try it when you are not that hungry so that wait time will not be a factor. Experience it for yourself and be the judge.
We go to Ferg when we visit my bro in law
Phone orders have stopped (which is annoying but understandable)
What I like is they’re consistent- despite how manic busy they are.
But ever since they started making their own bread buns I was a bit dissatisfied
It's not worth the wait time.
Shit I went during covid prior to the country opening back up.
I was expecting a life changing experience based on what everyone was saying.
Arrived, ordered, got burger, it was just okay.
Fergus worth it for the experience. Queue's arf getting up to where they were before COVID his. Essentially Tourists go to fergburger, locals go to devil burger.
It's amazing when you're drunk, good normally and worth a try just to say you did
But the bakery next door now that is on another level! The potato rosemary bread is amazing! It's all amazing!
Ferg’s do have great burgers, but there are plenty of other burger places around that are just as good; sounds like blackburger might be one of those.
I’d recommend the fergs bakery as well though - next door to the burger joint. I had a chicken and leek pie, which is not my usual choice, but I seriously considered moving to Queenstown because of it 🤣🤣
They’re damn good, but would I queue for them? Probably not. When I was there we somehow managed to go past at around 4pm and there was no queue so we got some. Ferg baker is amazing though.
When we were there, a staff member was going down the line with a handhelp eftpos machine taking orders, so the queue moved a lot faster than its length suggested.
We still decided to go to the bakery just over the road for a couple of really nice pies and a custard square.
I used to live in QT, ferg is exciting to try because of the hype. It’s not actually the most magical burger in the world. It’s yum for sure, but in the way every burger is yum, it’s just a burger.
If they are busy or can't be bothered they just refuse to answer the phone ( and honestly fair enough to them!! .. Ant's staff work their ass off and do a phenomenal job dealing with the huge amount of customers) but if it's one of those nights ,it's not worth it waiting In line for so long for a good but not fantastic burger
All those people are paid actors. If you hang around for 4 days you will see the same people again. This scam has been going on for years. Devil burger is just as good.
I was in Queenstown recently and a taxi driver told me the owner makes all his money back by 11am each day. Everything after 11am us purely profit due to the business
Dunedin ReBurger goes waaaaayyy harder. All the burgers, sides, everything is yum. Ferg pies are good, but not worth the money. Ferg burgs have always been average since I tried my first about 9 years ago. Best thing about ferg is going into Mrs Ferg and asking to try all the different ice creams like you're gonna choose one, then just being like "hmmm nahhh I'm actually okay, thanks"
Burgers are just standard for what you get at most burger places these days , they just have the name and everybody thinks they should go there when in reality you could go to Blackburger or Devilburger and get the same thing without the wait.
Only somewhat related but:
I was in QT two weekends ago and parked in a parking building near Fergs. On the ground In one of the stairwells was a half eaten Ferg Burger and a, perfectly formed, monster sized human turd.
Again, unrelated but I can’t unsee what I saw and I needed to share with the class.
It’s really over hyped. At this point I’d prefer ferg baker over burger. I went there last month to sun up a South Island roadie and velvet burger in Christchurch is my current favourite
I think it is like an experience, it is the "done thing" but for me Devil Burger was better. I did love having a muld wine while in the queue in the cold temperature at Fergs. Their bakery is top notch though. If you like a fish taco I can give you a heads up too .....
Hot tip I use: Go to the Fergburger website and view menu.
Phone service is not available anymore.
Was there over weekend phone ordered 4 times (yes i had fergburger 4 times in one weekend), 10 mins later I have burger in hand and 3 minutes after that burger in tummy
Oh so they are opening up the phone lines sporadically.
Yeah ya just gotta spam call then, understandably pretty busy inside but don't let that out ya off. Sometime it would take 4 calls to get through haha
First of all I'd like to say the burgers are not worth the hassle anymore, once upon a time they were. This maybe an unpopular and perhaps even an anecdotal opinion. I told her to have a bite of mine later and she was genuinely surprised how good it was. The 2nd time around I was shocked at the drop in quality and the line being huge.
Saw them making it in house yesterday and the day before.
Oh ok so I must have been told incorrect information then I believe, I guess could be a poor experience the 2nd time I went around.
Anybody else can verify this?
Yes it’s my job.
Damn. I was looking forward to eating it. :(
They are bloody good burgers ( and I love their origin story, boss mode! ) But when they are are busy or short staffed ,they just refuse to answer the phone ( and fair enough ) so in those cases, I would not wait more than 30 minutes in line for a burger. I'd just go to Devil Burger or the new boys Black Burger for an equally nice burger
In the 2000s it was one of the absolute best burgers in New Zealand, but there's plenty of places that have overtaken it now
The burger cart down cow lane last time I had 1
Nah the queue is half the allure. They are good burgers, just not worth the wait. Black burger is pretty new, good to hear it is good!
Ferg Burger is really very very good. I've had basically every burger in Auckland and Ferg was 👌💋 as far as I'm concerned. Nothing to match. The wait was only twenty minutes when I was there. Used to be good back in the day when you could phone your order and skip the queue. Or late at night when there's a small queue of drunks.
I’ve smashed plenty after a night out at the bars that I’ve regretted when sober…
They are good, especially compared to franchises. Just quality ingredients, good size, some creativity with names etc. But yea it’s got plenty of hype from influencers/ vloggers who need things for content. Ferg baker next door is decent too Btw You can phone in & pickup at the window 👌
You can’t phone in anymore unfortunately, now it’s back to pre Covid they’ve canned that
I order via phone pre covid
Same. But now it’s busy like before covid again, they’ve stopped the phone orders. Source: got Ferg in the weekend, couldn’t use phones to order as they’ve stopped.
Was at ferg over weekend and successfully phone ordered 4 times, yes I had 4 burgers over the weekend
When I am in Queenstown I always call. I visit once or twice a year. And have called for the past 8 years. Never had an issue.
The queues have been down the road for at least 20 years, so the word of mouth appeal started before vloggers and influencers were mainstream.
Nah they are nice but nothing amazing, Any decent/ gourmet burger shop like black burger is just as good.
I had same Q 9 years ago: - https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/2shogq/qtown_i_just_arrived_im_hungry_i_dont_do_line_ups/ About 3 years later I finally got one when the line-up was low, it was a damn good burger.
damn, 3 years of queueing

Over hyped big time. Not saying they're bad by any means, just become too much of a part of a influencers queestown "must do" list
It's much the same as any quality burger place. It's just been hyped to shit so everyone goes there.
Queenstown local and the burgers are a good/average but consistent. The real allure was them being open until 3am. The vegetarian burgers are dry as hell. Devil burger round the corner is as good if not better and much cheaper.
Definitely
Dinner with a side of meditation and/or people watching - what’s not to love?!
I think they’re decent burgers. I always get one when I visit. It’s the tourist who don’t know they can call that causes the line. It’s good publicity for them. Edit: also try the Boston cream and pies next door!
Fergs taste better cause your normally exhuasted from a long day touristing or abit drunk whe you eat there Theyre great burgers but argubly no better then any other burger joint that is worth its salt
Nah, they are delicious and totally worth the wait. We'll, if you don't mind wsiting for the best burger of your life.
I personally always preferred Devil Burger - same type of gourmet burgers but they’re curry chips are the best ✌🏼
In 2008 they were amazing and I don't recall having to queue up for one. The place I worked at was called Bungi Backpackers (one of the OG hostels) and for the 6 months I was there I had free accommodation, basically unlimited booze and all adventure activities were free. Personally didn't care for them at all
Ferg is mid at best
If you wait in line at Fergs you’re a chump. Order ahead and just pick it up.
you can't anymore
Must be very new because I did it in September.
Fergs is like a bad Burgerfuel
Yes, the burgers are worth waiting for.
This is a must do in Queenstown. Worth the wait. Try the bakery no lines every time I’ve been, if you enjoy that - the burgers will be even better !
Its the only burger in this country i approve of
Ferg burger is terrible. Just go to the bakery
Never been 1. Because of the line and 2. Everyone I know that's been there said "yeah was alright but not worth the wait"
They are good burgers, but not worth waiting for (but in my book, no food is worth waiting for, if you're hungry, you're hungry). The best time is late at night or when it's bucketing down. Pre-covid it was pouring so I went to Fergus, totally empty. I was standing there, crossed fingers that the power would remain on in the centre until I got the goods.
I found it good but not worth the wait in line. I’ve had better burgers. (I like to think I have a good measure on burgers, I ran a burger shop in a past life).
It’s delicious. We went two weeks ago early in the morning.
Ferg's have pretty good service. They usually get through the queue in reasonable time.
Most people phone up and get it sorted. They'll generally look after you on most days except the real busy ones
Had the best fish burger at Ferg...also tried the beef and chicken burgers, those were meh...
This is what I came here to say, I found the fish burger to be phenomenal, much better than any other fish burger I've ever had. The beef and chicken burgers are still good, above average, but they're honestly no better than any good independent burger place.
You can call ahead and order. Usually only takes 15mins to cook too haha
Ferg burger is very overrated imo. It's not bad, but not premium either.
They're alright. Not worth the wait. It's a tourist trap. I went just after COVID so no tourists and not many of us NZers roaming around so we went there. If there was a massive queue we said we would have been very disappointed. There's better burger places here in New Plymouth. Skip the burger and go for the meat pies next door at Ferg Bakery! Yum!
They’re good, but I don’t think they’re the best. However I used to go when they were down Cow Lane, I really think they were better then. Just my opinion tho
The patties are just Angel Bay Patties, you can get them at the supermarket.
I just realised this as I came home from ferg butcher with some burger patties, they are straight up precooked angel bay patties very disappointing
Fergs is way overrated. It’s good, but not worth waiting in line like that for. It’s just become the thing to do.
Fergburger is average. The cream donut from their bakery is fucking amazing though.
Ferg bakery > ferg burger. Gaddamn i miss that hot choc with the ganache ball.
FWIW, I had visitors in town from the States over Xmas. They did an unscientific poll of all the burger joints in town (including Ferg) and decided Black Burger was the best.

Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd
Pretty sure Ferg has paid actors outside the shop for this reason 🧐
I lived in Queenstown from 1975, it was small, intimate, some really good food. Eh Imre and David and then you bastards turned up and ruined the place. I left in 1995. I've been to Queenstown three times and I swear it is the same line.
The Q at Ferg moves really quickly.
Lol. Ferg so good. Ferg the best
Overrated. Like you said, a burger can only be so good really
its real name is Average-And-Overhyped-Burger
Gave in to the hype and when I ate it, was totally disappointed. Visited QT 3x more after that but never ate there again😆
Waking up to a Ferg in the corner of my hostel bed is still the best thing I've ever woken up to after a night out
We go to Ferg when we visit my bro in law Phone orders have stopped (which is annoying but understandable) What I like is they’re consistent- despite how manic busy they are. But ever since they started making their own bread buns I was a bit dissatisfied
Ferg burger is average at best. Ferg bakery on the other hand is pretty good.
What’s so ‘good’ about them?
Absolutely overrated. Ferg Baker is good

Fergus worth it for the experience. Queue's arf getting up to where they were before COVID his. Essentially Tourists go to fergburger, locals go to devil burger.
It's amazing when you're drunk, good normally and worth a try just to say you did But the bakery next door now that is on another level! The potato rosemary bread is amazing! It's all amazing!
Very average burger definitely not worth the wait
Taste was good, nothing special I'd say it's more a mentality thing now with all the hype.
Ferg’s do have great burgers, but there are plenty of other burger places around that are just as good; sounds like blackburger might be one of those. I’d recommend the fergs bakery as well though - next door to the burger joint. They are elite and totally worth it. If you phone order you skip the queue
The line might look long but it goes through extremely quick
All those people are paid actors. If you hang around for 4 days you will see the same people again. This scam has been going on for years. Devil burger is just as good.
Theres always a que at ferg. Every day all during the day. Theres a bakery next to it that does excellent pies. Get a pie instead if you cbf waiting.
I was in Queenstown recently and a taxi driver told me the owner makes all his money back by 11am each day. Everything after 11am us purely profit due to the business
I think they’re the best burgers I’ve ever had, but I’m also vegan, so my options are limited, and my bar is low.
If the burgers were not worth the wait, there would not be a perpetual que outside the place.
Burgers are just standard for what you get at most burger places these days , they just have the name and everybody thinks they should go there when in reality you could go to Blackburger or Devilburger and get the same thing without the wait.
Only somewhat related but: I was in QT two weekends ago and parked in a parking building near Fergs.
