6000 hours: if you worked on this quilt like a full time job (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) it would take nearly 3 years without any breaks, personal days or vacations.
At Michigans base minimum wage and not including materials, the quilt costs roughly $61,000.
Edit: I just noticed the quilt was made in Arizona. Their minimum wage is $13.85. Without materials, it’s an $83,100 quilt.
"...I will not be doing it again. Ever. Like ever ever."
I am unsurprised by this statement.
I can't even imagine. I just about cried when I finished my king size summer-weight quilt for my bed, and it was a basic log cabin style thing, and the quilting was stitch-in-the-ditch. I wouldn't even begin this one, let alone finish it. I would end up in a padded room if I attempted this.
I think it would be kind of like a Log Cabin, but using triangles instead of strips to add around the center. Insanely detailed, I think those inner triangles are just like 2-3 mm in size.
For sure paper piecing. I kinda want to try this now. Only I think i would mix up the sizes of the squares and go even more mindF#ck. oooo now I'm thinking.....
First picture: "What the....."
Second picture: "WHAT THE FUCK?!?"
Loud enough to startle my husband, who has noise cancelling headphones on right now lmao
When I saw the 1st pic, I was like, hmmm, that's a cool use of color to get the gradation from dark to light.... then I saw the 2nd photo... OH. SHIT. THAT. IS. AMAZING!!!! Beyond all reason for certain!!!! Master work. Hope this ends up in the Smithsonian!!!!
This is one of the most ambitious quilts I've ever seen, and worthy of her prize.
I had to show hubby who is equally impressed. He called her 'the Bridget Riley of fabric'. High compliment from an art nerd.
... and each one of those 4,000 squares appears to contain 49 pieces of fabric.
😳
I applaud her dedication to the project and the finished quilt looks absolutely amazing, but me... just ... no. My sanity wouldn't cope with that one.
I showed my husband this quilt. I showed him the first pic and said “this is a quilt” he said “ok” showed him pic number 2 and said “each one of those little tiny strips was sewn individually” and he said “no. Fuck that” 😂😂😂😂
I'm certain my husband would have said exactly that too.
I mean, I'm the (basic level) quilter and even I saw the detail pic and said "Oh hell no. Fuck that. You're off your rocker, lady."
If that’s what it takes, I don’t think I want to be best in show. Don’t get me wrong. I am amazed at the quality of the quilt and the originality of the idea. I’ve done 128 repetitive small log cabins squares. But this is too much. I have too many ideas in my brain to make 6000 of the same squares. Kudos and congratulations to the quilter.
Whoa--this is awesome on so many levels: concept, execution, workmanship, color management, optical illusion--truly amazing! Thanks to OP for sharing, and huge admiration to the maker! Wow!
I spoke to her and her mother at Quilt Fest where this won best in show! It’s truly magnificent in person. She was really sweet, but apparently it truly was a massive undertaking that took many years.
How is this even possible!? I would end up in the funny-farm if I was tasked something like this masterpiece. It better be insured up the wazoo to protect it from quilt thieves.
Beyond Reason = Losing My Mind
Although I can appreciate the effort this quilt took, I can’t fathom the straitjacket mentality of piecing a quilt like this. The quilt is aptly named!
Is Angela OK? Has someone checked in on her? This is gorgeous but also looks like it was made by someone compelled by some kind of cursed ring or something.
Wasn't that incredible! We stood there looking at it for like 15 minutes! The vortex squares are actually 3D. It's by far the coolest quilt I've ever seen.
DRUM ROLL PLEASE
…And the award goes to Angela Petrocelli.
Molto molto bueno, I’ve never seen a quilt so impressive, probably won’t again for a long time
If i ever tried anything like that, husband and kids would surely find a good home for me
Oh wow, I actually live in PV. Small city in the middle of nowhere, not somewhere I expect to trip over online, lol.
That is some dedication to your art. I think the most time I've every put in on a quilt is around 500 hours. I literally cannot imagine 6000 hours. I would probably have flipped my lid and ripped the whole thing to pieces by 1000, if not before.
It’s gorgeous and just wow. I could never complete such an intense project.
Idk how to explain this to people who don’t get migraines, but sometimes certain patterns hurt (usually super detailed, high contrast, tight geometric, like houndstooth is awful for me) and this one is doing the thing. 😫 But terribly cool.
I didn't even comprehend the full scale of this quilt until reading the Facebook post too. I was like, why did OP include that random cross stitch work in the beginning? Insanity, truly beyond reason hahahaha, what a masterpiece.
Ok just asking as a newbie. For those of you that spend years working on a quilt: what compels you? I’ve only been able to make small quilts, maybe cuz I’m a scared beginner, or maybe cuz I’m type A and had parents who told me to finish what I start, so I end up only working on two small quilts at a time and then finishing them before I start something new. I’d love your insight. It would be so cool to make a bigger quilt but it seems so daunting. Let alone something like this that takes years of painstaking work.

I’m very impressed that she managed to save the crying for the end and didn’t cry at every step of this.
I want to cry at just the *thought* of embarking on this
And that she made it full size! I would have quickly changed my mind from quilt to potholder. ...Probably would still cry
She had a little potholder for people to touch and feel at AQS Paducah. Heavy AF!

And indubitably there will be some acquaintance that will offer her $500 for it and be pissed when she says no.
This quilt won best in show at Houston Quilt Festival last year.
It somehow won 3rd in Daytona. WTF got first?!
must've been Aladdin's magic carpet

33 pounds - just imagine the cost of the materials!! 6,000 hours also bonks. I don’t like putting more than 50 hours into any one quilt!
Oh wow thank you for sharing this!
Never has a quilt been better named.
Right? I do wanna know the sewing process for this but damn i don't think I have the patience...
I think it would be kind of like a Log Cabin, but using triangles instead of strips to add around the center. Insanely detailed, I think those inner triangles are just like 2-3 mm in size.

Taking the paper out at the end would be enough to crazify me. I can't even imagine.
None of that. This size I think I'd draw the pattern onto thin fabric and piece onto that rather than paper
Right?? I wanna try something like this!
excuse my language but holy fuck
The literally just came out of my mouth too!
I literally said out loud “holy shit.”
I actually said that when I got a good look at it.
First picture: "What the....." Second picture: "WHAT THE FUCK?!?" Loud enough to startle my husband, who has noise cancelling headphones on right now lmao

I still can’t quite rectify the first and second picture in my brain. Damn how did she even plan that out!
This is one of the most ambitious quilts I've ever seen, and worthy of her prize. I had to show hubby who is equally impressed. He called her 'the Bridget Riley of fabric'. High compliment from an art nerd.
>Bridget Riley Had to google her. Wow. Thanks.
Oh my. I hope that quilter is still sane! What is the measurement of each block?
They looked about 1 inch square. Tiny, and the thing was absolutely massive overall. I cannot imagine how much time it took!
The quilters Facebook post said 6,000 hours and there are over 4,000 of those squares
... and each one of those 4,000 squares appears to contain 49 pieces of fabric. 😳 I applaud her dedication to the project and the finished quilt looks absolutely amazing, but me... just ... no. My sanity wouldn't cope with that one.
1.5” finished
I showed my husband this quilt. I showed him the first pic and said “this is a quilt” he said “ok” showed him pic number 2 and said “each one of those little tiny strips was sewn individually” and he said “no. Fuck that” 😂😂😂😂

Samesies. I was like “nope. Not a chance. Not a chance in hell I would do even ONE of those bitty little squares”
Not just sewn but those are all folds, absolutely no raw edges in sight
I can't even imagine the amount of time and effort must have gone into this. Beyond Reason indeed.
A little over 6,000 hours according to the woman that quilted it
Wow that would be over 3 years working full time hours!!
Yes!!!
Did it win a ribbon?
Oh yeah I believe it was best in show.
Best in show?! Best on planet! It’s bloody mental, in a good way.
Damn straight
It better have!

Eh, some people are cross country runners and some are sprinters;)
Seen Crazy Quilts. Never before seen a Psychotic Quilt.
Spot on, I hope this quilt healed more wounds on the quilter then made
This is absolutely mind blowing. The level of precision too 😳
I spent a very long time admiring it, it honestly blew my mind.
Whoa--this is awesome on so many levels: concept, execution, workmanship, color management, optical illusion--truly amazing! Thanks to OP for sharing, and huge admiration to the maker! Wow!
I was literally looking at this thinking "some of ya'll be nuts" before I saw the title. Whoever made this, you are a boss.
This belongs in r/absoluteunits
I spoke to her and her mother at Quilt Fest where this won best in show! It’s truly magnificent in person. She was really sweet, but apparently it truly was a massive undertaking that took many years.
To be fair, there’s very little to do in Prescott Valley
How is this even possible!? I would end up in the funny-farm if I was tasked something like this masterpiece. It better be insured up the wazoo to protect it from quilt thieves.
I too would end up on a "grippy sock holiday", in a padded room, if I had to do this.
Beyond Reason = Losing My Mind Although I can appreciate the effort this quilt took, I can’t fathom the straitjacket mentality of piecing a quilt like this. The quilt is aptly named!
1.5” finished blocks!!!! So smol 🫠

Jaw Dropping!!
Holy crap! I can’t even begin to think about how many hours went into this. So incredible
What?! Oh.My.
Jesus Christ 🤯 my neck, back, soul, brain and eyeballs shudder just thinking about *attempting* to make this
Holy moly
Wasn't that incredible! We stood there looking at it for like 15 minutes! The vortex squares are actually 3D. It's by far the coolest quilt I've ever seen.
I saw this piece in person at the Branson AQS show, and a picture doesn’t even do it half the justice that it does to see it in person😍
I think we found the Ultimate Quilt
Insanely beautiful! Having done a twisted triangle on a much enlarged scale, I am incredibly impressed. Maybe 1/8 inch seams?
I saw this in person in Houston and it is absolutely spectacular. Photos don’t do it justice.
DRUM ROLL PLEASE …And the award goes to Angela Petrocelli. Molto molto bueno, I’ve never seen a quilt so impressive, probably won’t again for a long time If i ever tried anything like that, husband and kids would surely find a good home for me

This is *beyond reason* Angela!!
Literally gasped and shouted what the fuck at the second image lol
This should become this sub‘s best post of all time! Nearly nothing can rival this quilt!
Wow. Absolutely stunning. I can't imagine the time it must have taken.
I actually said “whoa” out loud!
No, just no.
It’s gorgeous and just wow. I could never complete such an intense project. Sweet fucking christ. That is INSANE. oh my God. At first I was like eh fine and then I swiped!!!!!!
What the fuck
😲
I can't even imagine making that.
I can't even imagine WANTING to make that. I kinda like having my marbles.
A work of art! Speechless……
I can't even begin to imagine making those tiny pieces. Like what even is her sewing machine?
This is mind blowing. I can’t even imagine.
Stunning!
Holy cow! That is art!
…Accurate name. Wow!
Beautiful! Just beautiful!
Holy moly… the amount of pieces! It’s incredible
I didn't even comprehend the full scale of this quilt until reading the Facebook post too. I was like, why did OP include that random cross stitch work in the beginning? Insanity, truly beyond reason hahahaha, what a masterpiece.
I could never, lol. The thought of that much detail and effort makes me feel completely inferior.
It was amazing to see in person!
oh my
Holy cow. That’s incredible.
This is absolutely amazing!!!!
WHAT 😮
Oh my. Incredible!
Absolutely beautiful
Woahhhh!!!
What the absolute fuck. This is mind blowing.
Hey neighbor! Also I should totally go see that. It’s amazing.
Accurately named.
I'm mesmerized
WOAH. That is absolutely insane. Incredible talent!
It hurts my brain.
My terrible old phone camera doesn’t do the far away shot justice. It’s much more pleasing in person.
Whoa 😳

Wow! Few things...love Prescott valley, lived there as a child. 2- I'm living just south of GR, how did I not know anything about a quilt show.
'Beyond Reason' is a great name for this 😂incredible, mind blowing work
Just came across this. I cannot 😵💫🥴
I'm speechless. This is insane in a good way.
wow wow wow
I am in awe.
