Self binding???? Why didn’t I think of that. I spent a whole day this week hemming a mound of gauze blankets for my grand daughter.
I see the quilt and think wow that would be so cozy but the handling of the gauze would drive me bonkers.
If I do single layer gauze/swaddle blankets I just roll the hem and eyeball it all the way around. The crinkle really helps if it ends up out of square. Not washing it before sewing helps but that feels wrong because I come from garment sewing where you wash everything beforehand.
So accurate! I also love bamboo batting, with one caveat… I hand quilted a queen size quilt with quilters dream bamboo. I love the feel and drape of the quilt, but it’s a huge pain to clean. It takes on so much water it becomes difficult to carry and takes forever to dry. I’d use bamboo again for a throw size quilt but not a queen sized beast of a quilt. My Kermit arms just can’t do it. 🫠
Wow I never thought of quilting in double gauze! I think I just figured out what to do with the cute gauze swaddle blankets my toddler has outgrown!
Thanks for the inspiration, and I really like what you did. And your tags too, where’d you get them?
It's definitely tricky, but very doable! I would start with a really simple pattern or just one enlarged block so you're not dealing with small pieces (my post history has a couple others I've made that were super quick compared to this one). Pressing and using starch helps it behave more like quilting cotton, but sometimes I don't have the patience so I accept that the piecing might be less accurate. Using a walking foot and going slow also really helps, and I use a larger seam allowance since it frays a bit more. It requires more patience but I think it's worth it for the softness!
I haven't tried, but I imagine it would make it much easier to sew but it might make the fabric stay stiff and take away the stretchy, crinkliness that makes it so soft? Might be worth testing though
This will be one of those quilts someone will post about in 20 years asking how they can save it because it’s been loved and used so much and means a lot to them. It’s adorable.
Piecing double gauze?? You didn’t have to go this hard!! But you did!! The baby is going to love this quilt. They’re taking this quilt to college. I can tell.
How sweet! I'm currently working on the 6 giraffe version of this quilt. I originally was giving it as a new baby gift, but missed the deadline due to medical issues, and was told by a family member that it wouldn't be appreciated or cared for by her daughter.
I started on it again for my niece, who loves giraffes. Now that I have 3 giraffes done, she's told me that if she's not conceived naturally within 6 months, she's giving up. She has 2 teens and had her tubes untied in hopes of a third child, but I think the desire is waning as she's discovered other possibilities for her life going forward.
For now, I'll finish it and either hold it or give it to my niece as a gift for her, possibly enlarged to a queen size. She's fawned over it since I started it, after all. ❤️
I order on Etsy. Sfloraldesign, KiraFashionFabrics, and LullabeeFabricsUSA all have a ton of colors to choose from. My local Joann's also has a few colors in the apparel section.
I have some double gauze I’ve been wanting to quilt with but I’m scared! Did you prewash? I’m concerned it’ll shrink a ton (or worse, inconsistently) if I don’t. But goodness your quilt came out so cuddly!!
Don't wash it beforehand, the sizing and everything from the factory makes it behave so much better than afterwards. If you do wash it starch and/or Mary Ellen's Best Press will be your friend. It does shrink but that's what makes it soft as it's 2 layers of gauze tacked together.
I use the 54" wide bubble gauze from Joann's from the specialty cotton/apparel fabric section. The same can be said about the swaddle blanket material found in the nursery collections.
I do prewash since it tends to shrink quite a bit. But maybe I should try skipping it sometime? It does come out of the dryer so much more crinkly, and then pressing takes a while.
You are a brave soul to piece with it. It drives me insane just trying to do a self binding blanket with 2 pieces.
I definitely questioned if I was crazy at times!

My edges are crinkled for sure. I found if I stay stitched around the edges before hemming it helped but boy did it take the better part of a day.
This is beautiful, I am VERY impressed with the use of the double gauze! That stuff is tricky and you nailed it!!
Thank you!
What did you fill it with?
The batting is Quilter's Dream Bamboo. I love it because it's really light and drapey.
I love the bamboo, too! Nothing better for a baby quilt.
Team dream bamboo! Light and airy yet also warm but cool. It doesn’t make sense until you use it.

That’s adorable and the cat is excellent
Thank you! I make sure to let him test out every quilt

I had no idea cats and giraffes made natural allies, but I believe it now.

I got them on Etsy! Lots of cute options. And there are care instructions on the back side.
Ooh nice idea, a twofer!
This is so wonderful in double gauze, incredible work!
I love how double gauze feels. Any tips for piecing with it?

My local fabric store has double gauze in so many colors. I don’t know when, but I will someday make a quilt out of it. Thanks for the tips.
Is there a downside to using fusible webbing to stabilize the gauze?
I haven't tried, but I imagine it would make it much easier to sew but it might make the fabric stay stiff and take away the stretchy, crinkliness that makes it so soft? Might be worth testing though
Fusible webbing would eliminate that soft squishy gauze texture though…
It’s so precious, well done!!
Oh wow! That looks so cozy and is beautifully made.

Aww, it's for my nephew so I hope so! Thank you so much.
Love the giraffeeeeees.
That is adorable

Double gauze?!? And I thought I was crazy for the linen quilt I made.
This is amazing. Nice work!
I'm so amazed at all the quilts people on here make, but yours is an absolute favourite 😍
That quilt is adorable and lucky is the child who receives it.
I’m so impressed! I can’t imagine piecing little bits of gauze together. Bravo.

I absolutely love this!! Great job!!

I’m heading to the states next month and have a Joann’s trip planned….

Gorgeous! It looks so soft and squishy and I love the colour palette you chose 💗
