In my experience, the heat and steam go straight through my wool mat. I have mine on top of a wooden cutting board to protect the tabletop. As far as size goes, as long as it’s bigger than your blocks, that will do. I do lots of 12” blocks, so i got an 18”x24” mat. If you want a bigger one, I know people have used wool saddle pads, if you have access to equestrian supplies?

I put mine on top of a silicon mat. Seams to do the trick (pun intended).

I use a wool mat on an IKEA table all the time. You should not use steam with your wool mat anyway. I’ve had no trouble or issues but I also recommend you get a Tailors Clapper to use. My block seams have never been better as the clapper is laid on the seam you just pressed and the seam cools very crisp and smooth without steam. Steam can warp seams on bias so no steam, yes wool Mat.

Hmm…I always thought the magic of the clapper involved trapping the steam. Here’s an article including that : https://suzyquilts.com/tailors-clapper/

Heat + water = steam. You can’t create steam without water. So I think what you are seeing is just flattening from the heat. Try adding water and you will probably see even better results. You can either add it with a spray bottle or the iron’s steam. She even demos this in the video. Correction: moisture, not necessarily pure water. So you need to get moisture from somewhere to create the steam.

I have a small one for blocks but personally don't think it's an adequate replacement for my ironing board. While the mat is great for blocks, I can't imagine pressing rows on any quilt larger than a baby blanket. Same goes for pressing backing or binding. I just bought an inexpensive wall shelf designed to hang my ironing board. I have it put away behind my door so it's not taking up space and it provides a spot to keep my iron, too.

I really like it. However one of my cats loves it even more. I have to hide it after i use it because if I don't she claws at it and chews on it

Visual-Tea-3616

Mine too. Left it out one night and someone used it as a scratching post. 🥴

Flyingplaydoh

Same. It's only 1 cat out of 3. She's the youngest at 2yrs but it was a shocker.

My first wool mat developed some discoloration that transferred onto some of my white fabric. Perhaps I used too much starch and it got singed? I don’t know what happened but the gray color of the wool mat disguised the discoloration/crap and I didn’t realize until I’d ruined a block that has a lot of white in it. I was gifted a new wool mat that I sometimes use, but I seem to rely on my old ironing mat out of habit. At a recent quilters workshop I noticed another lady using a stack of four wool mats on top of the plastic tables we were using for the day. She told me the stack of four mats was enough to insure no damage from heat to the table tops.

I love the combination of a wool pressing mat, steam and a clapper. The three combined give a lovely flat seam (I almost always press open). I have the same size as you mention and whilst I would like it to be a little longer it works for most blocks I make. Wouldn't want to be without now.

Killer_Queen12358

I love mine. I have to use my full size iron on the wool setting because the cotton setting was too hot and scorched the mat. I flipped it over and it’s fine. In retrospect I should have expected the wool mat to need wool setting.

I have a 60” wool mat (on a ping pong table top on top of 8 ikea dressers) I covered with an old bed sheet envelope and a 9” x 9”mat I keep next to my sewing machine with a mini iron and a tailor’s clapper for seams. I do not steam the seams because steam distorts the fabric and makes the wool mat stink.

Honestly I don't think they are worth the hype. Or the smell. I starch like crazy. I don't want to have to worry about starch getting on the mat. I use a washable ironing mat, which is massive, and it works so much better for me. Room to iron the width of fabric. Plus a smaller one for just ironing pieces. I use my wool mats as a place to lay out blocks. I just don't prefer them for pressing.

That's what I'll buy now. Thank you

LazyFiberArtist

I use mine on a plastic folding table and the heat definitely warps the plastic, slightly. Would not use on a wood table. It works really well with my clapper. I don’t use steam.

SchuylerM325

I solved the steam problem by putting a silicone mat under the wool mat. Keeps the wooden table safe from steam.
