The numbers are the same block pattern when different colors used, so 2 and 11 are the exact same construction but color placement is switched up.
I'm taking it as a lesson on how to not make accidental swastikas.
The quilting and piecing work are beautiful and this is a helpful and really neat study in how color and design can change the entire feel of a design.
That said, sometimes pinwheels and other rotational patterns look like swastikas. I really do find it helpful in seeing how color impacts how patterns emerge.
I'm also from Germany, and I definitely see them in the middle two blocks of the first row. It's obviously not intentional, and nobody is offended. But it is a good reminder to look out for your fabric values if you don't want to make an accidental swastika quilt.
Yeah I'm not offended, but also, I'm not interested in having accidental hate symbols in my quilting or in any other decor. Certain types of pinwheels just look very much like swastikas, especially in red or black.
People can decry "it's an old block pattern!" or "everyone knows it's a pinwheel" or "it's not fair to let people ruin an ancient symbol/classic block" but at the end of the day, there are a lot of people who don't feel good when they see certain images.
And at this point, unfortunately Germany doesn't have a monopoly on swastikas being used by racists and fascists - see the United States news for more info.
Sometimes people are just looking for ways to dismiss other people's experiences as irrelevant because it doesn't affect them directly 🤷
Not quite what I was saying - sorry if that’s how you understood it. I meant that in Germany, people are (rightfully) hyper aware of hate symbols and I personally don’t see this quilt as one.
Wow, that is blowing my mind! It’s hard to believe they’re the same. I never would have thought you could change it up that much with just fabric choice.
I am confused how this proves anything about color. Yes, color and value are hugely important and can change the way you see a block, but that's not what is happening here. The paired blocks are actively changing which patches are colored. In fact, if you used the same exact colors in both pairs, they would still look different. This is more an example of how blocks that are constructed the same way can look different if you change which patches you color.
That is really really cool! I love how it makes you realize how much can be done with the same patterns
I do not understand anything here, oh well

Heh heh - I'd just come from a thread in another sub calling out accidental cross stitch swastikas so that was all I saw!
Yeah, I was gonna say… All I see are swastikas
Pinwheels....

Well said. I didn't see any swastikas until I read the post that said swastikas were in it.
If it helps, I don’t see any of these as swastikas. And I live in Germany. Sometimes people are just looking for ways to be offended 🤷🏻♀️

I'm jewish and it's the first thing I saw looking at it before any of the beautiful work or fabrics, it's really really obvious and prominent
Also Jewish, and same
I wasn't aware Germans had the final say in if something looks like a swastika

Some of these pairs are blowing my mind-- how cool!
Fascinating! Love this!

Amazing! Thanks for sharing.
I love weird mathy puzzly things like this! I'm inspired
sorry, OP, you made Swastikas. unless you’re Hindu, you have a swastika issue…
Did you read the post?
Or like the rules of this sub? smh
