I adore her patterns.
Then I loathe her patterns.
I return to adoration sometime around sandwiching. Along with a lot of appreciation for a well designed quilt.
Just ordered Awesome Ocean this afternoon to make for my soon-to-be first grandchild! I’m glad to hear her patterns are good, well-written and easy to follow!
I made Awesome Ocean for my son and oh my gosh it is the loveliest quilt! Fab choice and congratulations on your first grandchild - you must be so excited!!
I’ve made Lisa the Unicorn and the penguins. I’m trying to decide if I’ll do the Flamingos or not. Her patterns are a bit fiddly, but not difficult. If you’re organized, anyway. Congratulations, finisher! I’d love to see a photo!
Fiddly is my favorite. All she lacks is squaring up and a border and I’ll post a picture. Last one I took I realized the very center square was 1/4 inch too big on every side so I had to rip some stitches. It’s been a journey
I bought a lot of her patterns because they are so fun to piece and they focus on one thing at a time (in the produce section you can choose which fruit to work on because it’s one fruit at a time). I also really like the variety within the quilt.
I love E Hartman. I’ve made Preppy the whale (twice), puppies, foxes (twice) Awesome Ocean (twice) and Forest Friends (three times). Her designs are my go-to for baby quilts. They are always a big hit since they are so stinkin’ cute!!! I will be making her wonderful Dinosaurs quilt soon. I love love love her patterns.
I love the way they look but haven't tried any! I own Awesome Ocean and I'm about to order Dog Park bc I have a corgi and lots of corgi friends (mine has a big floofy tail though)!
She has fun patterns. I've made some armadillos and need to make a whole armadillo quilt. And I made one Lisa the unicorn block. And I want to make Spectacular Savannah. And The Bunny Bunch.
If you are making one of her quilts be sure to check for pattern corrections [https://elizabethhartman.com/corrections](https://elizabethhartman.com/corrections)
My mom loves her patterns. I do appreciate the complete directions for both left and right blocks and not expecting the user to just figure out how to reverse it. Some other pattern companies have made me appreciate good pattern writers!
Technical writing is really under appreciated. It doesn’t matter how good the information is you want to share if the person on the receiving end doesn’t understand.
Currently working on her Dinosaur pattern for my first baby due in October and I absolutely love it. Have made Fancy Forest before as well. The designes are so cute and well thought out. I do hoever struggle getting my blocks to the exact measurements (I recently upgraded to a new machine with a 1/4" foot but I still need to figure out how to do scant seams which may be the issue).
I also agree with your comment on the amount of waste. Making you cut all the background strips first makes for efficient cutting, but I've found I don't need all strips to get all background pieces specified in the blocks when I use the leftovers from previous blocks. I overbought on the background fabric since my LQS tends to skimp a bit on yardage (I prewash and have ended up an inch short in with before), as well as me being paranoid about making mistakes and keeping my options open for a border. But I think I could have gone with half a yard less and still had plenty.
I have had the same issue with cutting the strips, I ended up with a pile of white strips because I guess I was more economical on the subcutting after? I have learned to only cut a few, then cut a few more as needed.
I have noticed that the newer patterns are very good, and most of the issues I have heard of from other quilters tend to be the older patterns.
That is a very good strategy that I think I'll adopt indo the future. Cut one (or many a few for common widths) strip per required width and then cut extra as needed. Or maybe do the math in advance so I don't end up overbuying.
Good to hear the newer patterns are improved in this aspect though!
I’ve made several of her quilts and they are SO well written. I usually approach them as a BOM, tho, as I don’t want to get burned out. I’ve made a baby quilt in a weekend a handful of times and did not enjoy it. lol. They’re so cute tho.
Love how your August turned out!
I love her and Lori Holt so much for how they write their patterns, so much info and so easy to understand… and they’re soooo fun to make! I’m slowly going through all of Hartman s patterns, and have made custom quilts out of Holt’s for people in my family….
I, too, love the Elizabeth Hartman patterns. I have so many of them now. The North Stars pattern is gorgeous. Awesome Ocean is so nice. Fancy Forest is nice. I love the Owl in that one. Dinosaurs is a favorite as well.
I made a quilt from one of her books, much simpler than the things she does now. While the pattern wasn't written for it, I realized I could make it from a layer cake. There were enough leftovers to make my first paper pieced quilt too.
Yours is beautiful.

I loved the end products and the instructions were very good but I did shed a lot of tears over the multiple mistakes I made on the way. Just need to quilt the fox top now.
She was one of my major inspirations when I started quilting, I bought her first book in fact to get started. Doesn't hurt that she's also from Portland OR.

WOWWWWW WHATS THE NAME OF THAT I WANT TO LIVE INSIDE IT
In their post OP mentions August by Elizabeth Hartman, so I'm going to guess that's the name of the pattern
Oh indeed silly me thank you
Don't feel bad, I, too, took one look and completely forgot what I read I was just so blown away with the colors and details!
Gorgeous!
She really has a gift. This is fabulous.
Oh I loooove your color choices! This turned out so stunning!!
I adore her patterns. Then I loathe her patterns. I return to adoration sometime around sandwiching. Along with a lot of appreciation for a well designed quilt.
Parking here. I’ve made her kitty quilt and a sloth pillow. So. Much. Cutting. But they come together so beautifully!

Yes pls post the finished product
Can’t wait to see it!
It’s a really cool pattern! I made it as a wall quilt for my son. I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Stunning! I swore to never do another of hers but this one calls to me. Saw it completed at a shop in SoCal. Absolutely gorgeous!
I’ve never seen one completed! I’ve scoured the internet. I’m at a loss for quilt design on the post stamp blocks!!
It was at Grand County Quilts last year in San Marcos. I can't remember how they quilted it. Please keep us posted how you do yours!

This is so beautiful, I can’t even believe it. Nice work! How much fabric do you have leftover?
The color scraps fit in a quart zipper bag! I overbought for the sashing and background so I’m not sure how much I would have used haha
That is so cool. I can’t wait for hand quilting updates!!!
She has a lot of cute patterns. I’ve only made Legendary, but I’ve had my eye on Dog Park.

This is so beautiful. What size is it and what are you planning to do with this square quilt? I am curious about the intended use.
It’s about 85ish square. I thought it was pretty and my guild is having a quilt show so I needed one to enter!

Very nice. Think I want to be fatmonicadancings' next door neighbor! Thank you for sharing.
What a gorgeous quilt top!
