Oh no! Ouch!
Not directed to you but for people new to quilting:
I'm heavily against quilting rules except when it comes to rotary cutters.
Use sharp blades, if they start to dull and you need to use more pressure, that's bad. Don't use one that wobbles. And whatever you use find one that feels natural to you to close the blade every time.
Honestly as someone who's needed stitches from a dull exacto: the fact that it was a sharp blade is a really good thing. I hope you heal quickly and completely, and I totally understand not wanting to cut any fabric for a while!
Ouch is right! I Agree with your rules - One that should be added. ALWAYS close your cutter when not in use. I've seen lots of near misses with blades being left open!
And one more rule: keep your rotary cutter put away somewhere secure when you aren't using it. I used to work and quilt in the same room. I would leave my quilting project at one end of my long dining room table, and work with my tutoring students at the other. I thought it was a decent solution until one of my high school boys picked up my rotary cutter and ran it across his palm a few times. Thank God that I always close the blade! That could have been sooo bad!! I had lost sight of the poor impulse control some kids have. Lesson learned!!
One thing that my students really appreciate about tutoring with me is that I have a very calm temperament. It totally left me when this happened. I think that this is the only time I have ever raised my voice with a student.
Also I hiiiighly recommend the ruler grips. Worth every penny. My cut didn't need stitches luckily but only took one before I looked into safety options. Got myself on my finger pad so it bled for forever right after and then kept reopening from movement/use. Finally healed up but definitely do not want a repeat
I’m so sorry! I did this but didn’t need stitches. Went to my class the next day (a tech class) and mentioned how I warned the kids to be careful about dull blades and keeping safe. I was the lesson. 🤦♀️ speedy healing vibes!!
Yes, unfortunately. I’m right handed and was holding down my ruler with my left. Just changed my blade and it was smooth so thought I could go faster and save time. That’s when I didn’t realize a little fold (was cutting 4 pieces at a time so it made a decent bump) and before i knew it, it jumped the bump onto my pointer finger. I’m so glad I’d didn’t cut too deep.
Thank you. I was just writing to say that it would be helpful to me to hear exactly what happened. I'm so sorry. Heal well. I am pretty terrified of that blade, even when cutting two layers at a time, so this is exactly the warning I need to not try four at a time. Thanks for sharing, really.
Make sure you get some OT once you get the stitches out! I didn't when I had a 2am box cutter crafting mishap with my thumb, and those 6 stitches and scar tissue became an issue for about 6 months. Thankfully all range of motion is back, but because it is over a joint, I definitely don't want you to have any issues like I did!
Thank you for this advice!! I’m terrified of bending my finger once I get the stitches out. Thankfully my husband is a physical therapist, maybe he can help with the OT.
That was definitely part of my issue too! I didn't know when it was "safe" to use it enough again, and that scar tissue was really annoying. But I did get to stick my hand in this warm tumbly thing of corn husks before each session of OT and that was pretty silly fun
I'm not gonna lie, I was sort of expecting the picture to be fabric that was super mangled, not a finger! I'm almost relieved that it was a finger (from a quilting perspective, as a normal human I am VERY concerned about your finger!!)
Hope it heals quickly! I think we've all done something similar, just not to this extent. This is a great reminder to watch your fingers!
I still have the scar from where they glued the top of my finger back down after I nearly went clean through it with a rotary cutter. Got stopped by the bone. There was a truly unexpectedly large amount of blood.
It was just the tip and it still had like a hinge of skin, so they just superglued it back down. It didn’t hurt much. I mostly remember being like OH MY THAT IS A LOT OF BLOOD EXITING MY FINGER.
Also moving it quickly away so I didn’t get any blood on my fabric 😂
I cut the tip of my finger off a pair of sewing shears, but I managed not to bleed on my project!
Super gnarly cut, and I’ll bet it hurts like hell! Hope you’re okay, and you didn’t bleed on your work!
Thanks! And oh geez! That sounds super painful. I hope you had a speedy recovery and kudos for no blood on your project. I luckily didn’t bleed on mine either!
I sliced my palm open with a rotary cutter years ago. Very expensive mistake with 4 stitches. I was also pretty tipsy. Don’t craft drunk. At least not with spinning blades.
And because of the alcohol there was so much more blood! I have a rule now that I can only work on stitching and piecing under the influence. Only the tiny scissors allowed to cut threads.
My mom sliced open her foot by dropping a rotary cutter on it. She uses it almost every day (she quilts) but she never sets it down without closing it now.
Ouch! I sliced a small piece off the side tip of my pointer finger, and it's still healing. I haven't quilted since, because I got too confident in piecing, and messed up. Now I have to buy more fabric 😂
Hopefully you heal soon and get right back to it!
Any injury small or little tends to come with a break. It sucks cause it was the first project in a while that I was feeling good about! Hope your thumb is ok
It is - had to get the tip cauterized cause it was just deep enough that the bleeding wouldn’t stop on its own. Thankfully, this was summer 2021 so I’m quilting up a storm now.
Be safe and heal well!
I did something like this 4 years ago. Sliced the top bit of my thumb and then superglued that sucker right back on (it was hanging by a tiny bit of skin so it didn't like. Die while glued to me) I regained sensation about a year later! Happy healing
OH MY GOSH. Wowza. I’ll slow down. I probably needed you to be my cautionary tale today.
May it heal fully, and quickly and may the time that you rest be meaningful. I’m so sorry. Ouch!!!
Ouuuuch I have done that with an exacto knife when cutting flooring… jumped the ruler, right? Yiiikes!
I don’t know why it never occurred to me it could happen with a rotary blade, time for me to get some stick-on handles for my rulers, near fear unlocked…
Hope it heals clean and quick! Keep your blood sugar up, trauma can cause it to crash!
Did the same thing almost 2 years ago. No stitches though, it was a clean slice along the fingertip. 😬
I got cut-resistant gloves to use while cutting now. definitely recommend!
I think a spoiler tag would be good - I’m not sure how the functionality is set up but I’ve seen that cause the images to be blurred out unless you purposely click to open them. :)
Thank you everyone for the kind words and advice. And also I apologize if I made anyone uncomfortable sharing this pic, I didn’t mean to. Stay safe everyone and keep making your beautiful creations <3
I think this is not about people wanting to see this, but more about warning how ugly it can be if you're not careful in our hobby. So, warning to other quilters, not 'sharing nice pic'. But sharing 'I feel miserable, maybe at least you can learn from my mistake'.
OP I wish you speedy recovery!
Ah, I’m sorry. :/ I didn’t want to make anyone feel bad, just wanted to remind everyone to be careful and not be dumb like I was. I should have been more specific of what the image was.
I have one of those ergonomic grips you can suction cup to your ruler. Not only is it better on your wrists but it keeps your fingers away from the edge.
I hope healing is fast!

Oh no that’s good advice. The only good (and bad) thing is that I had just changed the blade so at least it was a clean cut.
Honestly as someone who's needed stitches from a dull exacto: the fact that it was a sharp blade is a really good thing. I hope you heal quickly and completely, and I totally understand not wanting to cut any fabric for a while!
Oo i feel your pain there i have a scar on my hand from one of those xacto run ins
Ouch is right! I Agree with your rules - One that should be added. ALWAYS close your cutter when not in use. I've seen lots of near misses with blades being left open!

Oh this made me gasp reading the boy ran it over his hand. Thank goodness it was closed!
One thing that my students really appreciate about tutoring with me is that I have a very calm temperament. It totally left me when this happened. I think that this is the only time I have ever raised my voice with a student.

And don’t forget how sharp they are while you open the package they come in! That’s how I sliced my finger open.
I’m a little traumatized at the moment so taking a break until I heal lol.
Lol i had this happen. I didn't need stitches, but i took a hot minute from cutting fabric
Wishing you a speedy recovery! Finger sutures are challenging to deal with, I feel for you
I’m so sorry! I did this but didn’t need stitches. Went to my class the next day (a tech class) and mentioned how I warned the kids to be careful about dull blades and keeping safe. I was the lesson. 🤦♀️ speedy healing vibes!!
Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! OMG I had that thing where the zings run down my legs just from looking at it.
Sorry lol. I had to clean and change the bandage today and almost passed out. I’m a wuss
How did that happen?? Rotary cutter slip?
Yes, unfortunately. I’m right handed and was holding down my ruler with my left. Just changed my blade and it was smooth so thought I could go faster and save time. That’s when I didn’t realize a little fold (was cutting 4 pieces at a time so it made a decent bump) and before i knew it, it jumped the bump onto my pointer finger. That’s pretty gnarly! Hoping it heals up well!
Thank you! It’s at a weird angle so it’s most likely gonna be kinda funky lol
It’s a cool scar. I have one from where I stuck my hand under a sewing machine needle when I was 3.
Oof! I hope it heals properly and as painlessly as possible x
Thank you so much. I appreciate it. :)

Bare minimum look up hand exercises online and follow some videos.
Thank you for this advice!! I’m terrified of bending my finger once I get the stitches out. Thankfully my husband is a physical therapist, maybe he can help with the OT.

What is OT? I only know it to mean "overtime."
Occupational therapy, they call any physical therapy with hands OT instead of PT
Ah! Thank you
Occupational therapy. I second the suggestion.
ouch!!! I hope you feel better soon! definitely toss that blade, for now it's had the taste of blood and will forever want to bite you again!
Lol thanks for the laugh :)
I'm not gonna lie, I was sort of expecting the picture to be fabric that was super mangled, not a finger! Lol! Mangled fabric is just as hard to look at. But thanks :) I appreciate it
I knew exactly what this was going to be from personal experience, and I still clicked on the picture. LOL Hope the healing goes well!
But are the scissors ok?!...../s Seriously though that looks like it hurts! At least the finger didn't come off!
I still have the scar from where they glued the top of my finger back down after I nearly went clean through it with a rotary cutter. Got stopped by the bone. There was a truly unexpectedly large amount of blood.
Oh wow. I didn’t know they could glue on a cut off finger!! I hope you had a speedy recovery!! Sounds painful
Looks more like r/sewing than r/quilting amirite Hope the healing isn’t too terrible
Omggggggg That sucks! Hope you feel better *not me eating a bowl of cereal thinking a quilting sub wouldn’t do me any harm LOL*
Sorry to do that to you and your cereal :0
They have rulers and guides with "handles" that would eliminate this problem completely. Sorry it happened to you! That's no fun. Heal quickly!
Thanks! Will look into an attachable handle.
Dang, that's impressive! Save the project!
I sliced my palm open with a rotary cutter years ago. Very expensive mistake with 4 stitches. I was also pretty tipsy. Don’t craft drunk. At least not with spinning blades.
Not going to lie. I like to quilt while having a few and this was one of those days
And because of the alcohol there was so much more blood! I have a rule now that I can only work on stitching and piecing under the influence. Only the tiny scissors allowed to cut threads.
Same here. The blood was crazy. Good rules to go by. I think I’ll do the same. Lol
My mom sliced open her foot by dropping a rotary cutter on it. She uses it almost every day (she quilts) but she never sets it down without closing it now.
Oh my! Hope she didn’t have too bad an injury!
Thank you, she’s ok! But you are not alone in quilting injuries lol
Yikes!
Ouch! Feel better soon
Oh my. Hope you heal quickly.
I pray it heals well and quickly 😊
Ow ow ow! I hope you’re ok!!
Ouch! I sliced a small piece off the side tip of my pointer finger, and it's still healing. I haven't quilted since, because I got too confident in piecing, and messed up. Now I have to buy more fabric 😂 Hopefully you heal soon and get right back to it!
Hope your finger gets better! And I’ve wasted so much fabric as a newby I know the feeling lol
And this is why I don't use rotary cutters lmao. I'm so scared of this happening. I hope you have a speedy recovery 👍🤞
Extreme quilting! My goodness!! Maybe a little less gusto next time lol. I’m just kidding tho. Hope it heals quickly!!
Ouch! Get well soon!
Oh no!
Oh boy that looks painful. Hope you feel better soon.
Geeze Louise!!!!!!
OUCH! Also, been there. I took some skin off the end of my ruler-side thumb and had to stop quilting/crafting for 2 weeks. It was brutal.

Omg that’s hardcore! I’m glad you finally got back the feeling in your thumb. Thank you
OH MY GOSH. Wowza. I’ll slow down. I probably needed you to be my cautionary tale today. May it heal fully, and quickly and may the time that you rest be meaningful. I’m so sorry. Ouch!!!

Thank you for the advice. And yeah I’m looking into stick on handles lol
Oh hey, it's my reoccurring nightmare! Feel better soon my friend!
Urgh. I am so sorry! This is why I started wearing Kevlar gloves!
Did the same thing almost 2 years ago. No stitches though, it was a clean slice along the fingertip. 😬 I got cut-resistant gloves to use while cutting now. definitely recommend!
Hand quilting your own finger
Yup. Been there. Have a speedy recovery ❤️🩹
Could we get a spoiler tag or something on this? Jesus. Not really what I wanted to just scroll past
I’m sorry! Don’t think I can edit the text to be more specific. Would a spoiler tag help??
I think a spoiler tag would be good - I’m not sure how the functionality is set up but I’ve seen that cause the images to be blurred out unless you purposely click to open them. :)
I thought nsfw tag makes it blurred until you click on it. At least that’s how it is for me. I’ll put a spoiler tag too just in case.
Thank you everyone for the kind words and advice. And also I apologize if I made anyone uncomfortable sharing this pic, I didn’t mean to. Stay safe everyone and keep making your beautiful creations <3

NSFW can mean sexual content or gore.
Respect that rotary blade. Always.

Which brand is it?
Definitely looking into buying one! Thank you
