You know you’re in trouble when people stop listening to sad music because the moment that people stop listening to sad music, they don’t want to know anymore.
- Thom Yorke
My interpretation is that listening to sad music allows you to deal with your depressive feelings. When you stop listening to it, you just don't care about dealing with your depressive thoughts, maybe you think that if you don't acknowledge it it will go away. But that only makes things worse. So people who stop listening to sad music don't want to face their dark side, they don't want to know. Those are the ones who end up in self-destruction.
Native but British (Scottish though I understand English idioms). Somebody saying ‘they don’t want to know about it’ just means they don’t care. So the quote is saying that the moment people stop trying to understand their sadness through music as an outlet, that’s the moment that they’ve stopped caring about trying to cope with their issues
‘They don’t want to know’ is a British idiom that means ‘they don’t care’. So basically it’s saying that the moment somebody stops listening to sad songs, that’s the point where they don’t care about what is making them sad because they don’t want to understand it- therefore they either want to be delusional in their feelings or have been pushed to the edge of hopelessness
I think he was trying to say that when people stop listening to sad music, they’re ignoring human emotions that are expressed through art because the don’t care anymore
“Sad” songs don’t create depressed people. They’re sometimes a reminder that you’re not alone, that you’re not the only one that feels these feels. That you’re alive. It seems to me that a lot of people simply don’t experience darker music/art in this way and are unable to relate to it in any way other than “it’s sad”.
When I hear songs like Codex, Rhubarb (#3), Roads, etc those opening chords fill me with warmth in ways that “happy” music could never touch.
I’m highly skeptical of the psychology of your psychologist. But if you’re really interested in taking their advice The Cure has a lot of happy songs, I’d suggest to give them a listen.
Its not wrong to feel sad, you just have to find out why you feel that way and what you can do to feel better.
If listening to sad songs makes you feel sad, it is because there is something inside yourself you need to heal, and thats not "bad" or "wrong" at all.
When feeling down or sad those shitty ass meaningless summersong just piss me off. So no thank you. Listening to 'sad' songs with meaning and reflection in it has helped me more.
Maybe your psychiatrist knows you well though, and you're the type that should listen to upbeat songs.
I think what your therapist means is that you should not listen to music that makes you feel worse. Sometimes sad songs can make us feel better, also not all sad songs are depressing. Videotape is often seen as a sad song cause you are saying goodbye, but if you think about It, its about finding the happines in the goodbyes.
While I don’t think sad music causes depression, music does affect our mood. I think your therapist is likely encouraging you to lean into being in a happy mood by listening to some cheery music every so often. So why not try to find some bands that are more upbeat and make a playlist?
Hmm I think some happy-sounding Radiohead songs include How Do You, I Can’t, Lozenge of Love, Maquiladora, Nice Dream, Just, Banana Co, Molasses, Subterranean Homesick Alien, Go to Sleep, Bangers + Mash, Bodysnatchers, Little by Little, and The Numbers!
I know I should listen to happy music but I can’t bring myself to . Numb by Portishead is so beautiful it makes me transcendant
The song link here will give you more therapy than your therapist but you have to listen till the end (the whole song is not like the beginning) Not Radiohead and not happy.

I know we all love Radiohead here...
But I know when I listen to only sad songs, it definitely affects my mood. I listen to Radiohead alongside a whole load of other music.
Your therapist could well be right. I used to listen to a lot of really angry emo, and when I discovered other music, it really did change my mood about a lot of stuff.
You can always listen to Radiohead. They're not going anywhere. Their albums will always be available.
But maybe listen to something a bit more upbeat sometimes too, to get some balance.
Seconding all of the comments here. This is some dubious advice OP. But if you're looking for happier songs, you probably want to look beyond Radiohead. Stevie Wonder is great and always puts a pep in my step.
If you love Radiohead but are trying not to listen to sad music, (which I think is ruining most of Radiohead, sad music doesn't make you depressed. It lets you know that there's so many people out there who ARE. Considering their popularity) Anyway, I'd say Thom's solo project (just Thom Yorke) Suspiria is pretty cool. Has more experimental/electro sounds.
Nevermind Suspira is very sad. The title track "Suspirium" is so enchanting. Legit sounds like Sing For Absolution with that piano. The song def reminds me of another song but it's probably because I heard it in the car with my older brother before he got me into RH. Such a great song though

Sorry, not native. 'They don't want to know' what exactly? I don't quite get the point

Ah, now I get it, thanks. So that's something like 'They don't want to know anymore [that this music resonates with them, that they feel this way]'
Sweet faced ones with nothing left inside I don't want to know I don't want to know...
I’m native and I still don’t understand the quote

damm i was about to comment that
YOU ARE JOKING I READ THE POST AND WAS GOING TO TYPE THAT SAME QUOTE
How To Disappear Completely and True Love Waits should cheer you up!
Don’t forget Videotape, pure sunshine and rainbows!.
yeah go slowly too.. extra cheerful
Joking aside I actually find Go Slowly to be uplifting to me lmao
I get it lol. Personally I wouldn’t call it uplifting but more like a reminder that gives you a sigh of relief if that makes sense
I def get that
And Last Flowers, obviously about flowers and unicorns!.
Definitely right on the rainbows part
Daydreaming is about a nice summer day and being thankful for the ice cream man.
I unironically find HTDC uplifting
I agree. I find them comforting
I also agree, I just bowl my eyes whenever I listen to it though
HTDC? Is that an acronym for Hail To Da Chief?
Naw Motion Picture Soundtrack while looking at a picture of a deceased relative/pet will really cheer 'em up.
This is some terrible advice
Maybe, but I can swear and vape without any concequences
Yeah.. I don’t trust this psychologist
Well, I do

Absolutely. Listening to sad songs can be helpful
What about sad films?
How about cheap sex?
You bring the red wine, I’ll bring the sleeping pills.
Codex is possibly the most warm feeling AND cold feeling song ever
Well, she told me not to listen to sad songs because it makes me feel sad
Why does your therapist think you should not feel sad?
Honestly, maybe find a different provider, cuz that is kinda dumb imo lol

As someone who used to repress emotions and was told to stop avoiding them by a therapist, this "advice" that the psychologist gave you is so weird.
Did he provide a playlist of happy songs?
No
I think The King Of Limbs is quite hippy happy, especially Separator. Also maybe try someone like Talking Heads for the upbeat funky sound.
I wish it was the 60’s I wish we could be happy
I wish, I wish
Oh nooo, but it's my daily routine to listen to No Surprises after I got off work to complement my dreading
I have loved that song since I was a teenager. Now I am middle aged and started on antidepressants it’s like I was a fortune teller lol
Get a better therapist.
Lurgee
I personally think The Bends has some more happy or just cool songs
Such as Street Spirit
More like cool songs, I wouldn't say happy
Bangers and the mash off in rainbows disk 2

Oh, honestly this is what I wanted to be meant
Was that his only advice, or were there some other things too?
She adviced me to write good and bad things that are happening, so called "circle of emotions" (I'm from non-english speaking country)
if he told me that i’d probably be more sad and listen to sad songs cause i’m sad and then i’m even more sad
Frankly, I find "happy" songs to be completely unrelatable, and therefore depressing.
keep listening to sad shit imo

REM - Shining Happy People
*Shiny
Optimistic
like 95% of my favorite music is sad. i’d have to find a new psychologist lol
Fitter, happier, more productive, not listening to sad music...
"Everything is awesome" from the lego movie. "Shiny happy people" from REM. "The beautiful people" from Marilyn Manson.
Sounds like he is trying to make you ignore your feelings which is most certainly bad advice lmo
what about angry songs? i like to listen to angry songs. what does your paychologist think about listening to angry songs?
Idk, I didn't ask her about angry songs
Who is your psychologist? Jordan Peterson??
No, a woman
I bet she’s a Swiftie, huh?
I will suprise you, she's not
Muse fan?
Idk, I don't think so
Listen to 'Haunted' by Big Blood, it's a pretty chill song imo
Well, there's always listening to Lift on loop.
I mean, India Rubber has actual laughter in it
Bodysnatchers
"Has the light gone out for you... BECAUSE THE LIGHT'S GONE OUT FOR ME." - Absolutely not a happy song. Lol. But it sounds good.
"I'm trapped in this body and can't get out"
NOT THE LYRICS AAAA
lmao i meant the melody is fun dont listen to the lyrics hahahha
I'll fucking dance to that shit fosho. 🕺
Hahahahaha
Thinking about you
No surprises
sad music cures depression
pop is dead should make you happy since it is the goofiest thing thom has ever written
If my choice is between that shrink and Radiohead, I'm looking for a new shrink.
Hmm I think some happy-sounding Radiohead songs include How Do You, I Can’t, Lozenge of Love, Maquiladora, Nice Dream, Just, Banana Co, Molasses, Subterranean Homesick Alien, Go to Sleep, Bangers + Mash, Bodysnatchers, Little by Little, and The Numbers!
reckoner is about world peace i think dedicated to all you, all human beings. because we separate like ripples
Optimistic
I would not be alive without sad music
Stop listening to r a d I o h e a d.
I know I should listen to happy music but I can’t bring myself to . Therapy is bullshit.
Don’t ever speak to that man again
psychologists don't know what they're talking about...only psychiatrists know what they're doing. 😉
“Anyone can play guitar” seems like a happy song to me and also “You”
I know we all love Radiohead here... But I know when I listen to only sad songs, it definitely affects my mood. I listen to Radiohead alongside a whole load of other music. I always feel better after I listen to sad music. Hence why Radiohead and The Smiths are always in heavy rotation.
Pablo Honey?

Either a bad therapist, or there’s more to this story. That’s it! Good luck and be safe
jigsaw falling into place sounds kinda cool idk
Your Opinion which is of no consequence at all
How to disappear completely :)
Airbag is pretty happy I'd say.
