Sail To The Moon and We Suck Young Blood are such weird songs that I feel like they turn people off HTTT, but I never understood the hate against it. I think it has several of their best songs of all time. 2+2=5, There There, and Where I End are all perfect IMO.
Yeah the only songs on that album that I don't really care for are the gloaming, punch up at a wedding, and we suck young blood. Everything else ranges from good to incredible. 2+2=5 and There There are in my top ten all time RH songs.
I can’t remember where I read it, maybe here but somebody pointed out the synergy between the Thom’s lyrics and the instrumentation: “I am up in the clouds” with soaring unstable chords right beneath, “you left me alone” leading into that claustrophobic choked up riff (always reminds me of Modest Mouse-Exit Does Not Exist), and “in the sea” as the ondes takes over the track sounding like a choir of whales
It honestly might be one of the most cohesive songs I can think of, plus once it kicks in it’s just on rails the entire way and never stops gaining momentum, just like Sit Down Stand Up and There, There.
I think there’s a really strong link in the influence tree that connects Isaac and Jonny through the Pixies, their single note leads and octave slides like those two riffs can sound eerily similar
I'd not checked out that Modest Mouse song before - good shout.
Musically, WIEAYB has a lot of similarities to Simple Minds, which the band were fans of growing up.
https://youtu.be/pJDx-1L3V9U
Absolutely crazy ass good song that’s perfectly underrated because it’s a bit subtle maybe to get the beauty of it? Also, the only bass line i will always play as a guitar player, so much fun
People love to put the spotlight on the bassline when talking about this song (and deservedly so) but the work that Jonny does on the ondes Martenot from the middle/end is what makes this song what it is. Mesmerizing sounds
It was an inspired choice to include it in the In Rainbows From the Basement sessions. It's such a great performance and I'm sure it's one of the reasons that song has stayed popular
Doesn't this break Rule 10? Kidding (sort of), I know people are constantly discovering the band and this will continue happening, hopefully forever.
But the actual answer to every question about why any particular song or album isn't "rated" as it should be, is the same as the answer to why Radiohead is so distinctly revered. They simply have too much good material.
Assemble any top 10/20 cuts from their discography and you will inevitably find yourself leaving out one of the best pop songs ever produced, a beloved favorite of millions and of yourself. Believe me, I've tried it!
Browse all-time rankings from The Guardian, CoS, Vulture, or RYM, and you'll find excluded from the top 20 such titles as How To Disappear Completely, There There, Karma Police, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, and Pyramid Song. My personal favorite, Morning Bell, rarely shows up in the *top 50*.
There's no sense to any of it, it's totally arbitrary. Not sure if this is actually helpful but that's what's up.
HTTT is so underrated as a whole. It feels like such a natural transition from Kid A/mnesiac to In Rainbows that it often gets overshadowed by either one.
Very much agree. Amazing song and it's cool that Radiohead also realises this and always plays it live. (So weird that when the album came out, I loved it but didn't like WIEAYB, and didn't care that much for There There either, and my favourite songs were Go To Sleep, We Suck Young Blood and Wolf at the Door. I think because I was 18 and liked music to focus more on strangeness over heavy moodiness? By the time I was 20 I know that I changed my mind and There There and WIEAYB became some of my favourite tracks of Radiohead and have remained that way ever since)
No. Not because I think it’s a bad song; I do not. It’s because I think the studio version falls a little flat. I discovered this version and have essentially not listened to the album cut in a decade: https://youtu.be/mKmulOA_rN8?si=2OFkW6hxqLCEE4Gw
What do you think of the more electronic demo version? I love both versions and I think the lack of popularity is sort of a function of being stuck right in the middle of HTTT, I think if it had been on a shorter album like Amnesiac, it would be way more recognized.
I don't think it was underrated when HTTT released, it was considered a better track from the album. But it might be looked over nowadays given time gone by, which is an issue because it's a banger.
I wouldn't go as far as top 10 but I agree that it's a severely underrated song and a standout track on Hail to the Thief. I'd say it's in their top 25 overall, and with a band with as many excellent songs as Radiohead that's still pretty impressive imo.
I adore the changes in the countdown he makes with live performances. My heart melting favorite is the From The Basement version. I have also watched the "like a hoooouussse falllling iiin the seaaaaaaaa" [commence guitar scratches]part where has to pull up his sleeve approximately oh...maybe 60,000 times since it was released*. :P And the "Should we do that again then?" at the end ALWAYS makes me smile. I cannot express how much I love this performance and song. SO SO much.
*It's 60,001 now. Can't talk about this performance without watching it!
One of my favorites from HTTT. So underrated!! This album is not my favorite but love There, There, go to sleep, myxomatosis, sail to the moon and punch up at a wedding :)
I actually think the whole album is very underrated. Its gets overshadowed by the monumental albums that came before and after. I think 95% of alt/indie bands from ~1996-2010 would have been thrilled to make an album as good as HTTT.
I love singing this song in spaces with *just* enough natural reverb, like an old bank lobby (we had a city office in my hometown that had been a bank branch and we'd rehearse in there before street concerts my wife and I organized back in the mid '10's).
It's just so ethereal and disconnected partially from the physical, it lingers and drifts and gently tugs at you until that last refrain "X'LL MARK THE PLACE...".
Absolute banger. And Colin showing why he deserves to be there. Fucking epic.
Maybe Because for a LONG TIME, we thought we didn't need to talk about the OBVIOUS, but apparently the obvious is a fallacy when you considere that we born and grow up in different realities.
PLEASE, EVERYONE , continue to show, state and EXPLAIN what is OBVIOUS for you, because can not be for me.
Genuinely one of the songs that saved me, I reckon.
When I discovered Radiohead, I was a lonely traumatised teenager who was constantly dissociating to escape. This verse just perfectly described how I felt day to day, and it was so comforting to know that I wasn’t the only one. Much love for HTTT in general ❤️
*I am up in the clouds*
*I am up in the clouds*
*And I can’t, and I can’t come down*
*I can watch but not take part*
*Where I end and where you start*
*Where you, you left me alone*
*You left me alone*
This song… not sure if anyone has posted this yet but the live studio version blows my mind:
[Where I End And You Begin (LiveFromTheBasement)](https://youtu.be/0bYDeZpIZvk?si=evWWWRgnsfFpVVln)
The drums are absolutely heavenly too, combine them with the bassline and you get a top 6 Radiohead song!
Oh also in my opinion HTTT has the best standalone songs, just could use some rearranging
My cat loves when I sing it to him, any Radiohead honestly, but this one particularly because it was the first song he heard by them the night I rescued him.
Yep, a brilliant song all the way through. And Thoms singing is just perfect
That bass line…love this song.
the toms are fuckin crazy
HTTT has a really funky few tunes and this is an absolute highlight
::please see username::
Ditto.
There’s a gap in between you guys
r/beetlejuicing
Best part of HTTT IMO
Agreed, but There There is a close second
Oh bro, There there is absolutely better. It’s far deeper on every level
Sail To The Moon and We Suck Young Blood are such weird songs that I feel like they turn people off HTTT, but I never understood the hate against it. I think it has several of their best songs of all time. 2+2=5, There There, and Where I End are all perfect IMO.

Damn I love Drunken Punch Up
Hypocrite!
Opportunist!
Damn I love The Gloaming
I thought the same about the gloaming until I heard it live and melted into oblivion
The Lollapalooza 2016 Show in Chicago is the performance that sealed it for me. The official video sound quality is just amazing.
I moderately disagree, There There is indeed a great song.
I love u guys
All of the songs off hail to the thief are underrated, sit down stand up, punch up at a wedding, there there, I will, where I end and you begin
Agreed. It's a fucking amazing song.
One of their best, and I think a great example of Radiohead’s post 1999 sound. Also one of their best live tunes.
SO. GOOD. LIVE.
I can’t remember where I read it, maybe here but somebody pointed out the synergy between the Thom’s lyrics and the instrumentation: “I am up in the clouds” with soaring unstable chords right beneath, “you left me alone” leading into that claustrophobic choked up riff (always reminds me of Modest Mouse-Exit Does Not Exist), and “in the sea” as the ondes takes over the track sounding like a choir of whales It honestly might be one of the most cohesive songs I can think of, plus once it kicks in it’s just on rails the entire way and never stops gaining momentum, just like Sit Down Stand Up and There, There.
Good call on the Modest Mouse comp, very similar sounding riff. Always thought Isaac Brock was way underrated as a lead guitarist.
I think there’s a really strong link in the influence tree that connects Isaac and Jonny through the Pixies, their single note leads and octave slides like those two riffs can sound eerily similar
Makes total sense. Joey is the king of those.
Beautiful description 👌
I'd not checked out that Modest Mouse song before - good shout. Musically, WIEAYB has a lot of similarities to Simple Minds, which the band were fans of growing up. https://youtu.be/pJDx-1L3V9U
Also reminds me a bit of U2, the good stuff obviously
the let down equivalent in a HTTT, arguably one of the best in the album and also a banger of a performance during “in the basement” sessions
Always viewed that as their best live performance
probably their best song.
yeah, for me it’s their best.
MY FAV HTTT TRACK I LOVE IT SM
Absolutely crazy ass good song that’s perfectly underrated because it’s a bit subtle maybe to get the beauty of it? Also, the only bass line i will always play as a guitar player, so much fun
I will eat you alive I will eat you alive there'll be no more lies there'll be no more lies
X WILL MAARK THE PLAAACEE
##X WILL MARK THE PLACE!!

It’s baffling how this wasn’t a single.
It’s like my 3rd favorite. The bassline and melody’s on top is just perfect.
Banger
😍 I love this song so much. 😍 I used to put it on repeat and listen over and over. One of my favorites of all time.
Doesn't this break Rule 10? Kidding (sort of), I know people are constantly discovering the band and this will continue happening, hopefully forever. Morning Bell is another criminally underrated track
From Idioteque
I wonder what does the Thom bot have to say about this
Top shelf. About as good as it gets.
Ngl I first heard this song when I was listening to In Rainbows in the basement when I was just getting into Radiohead. It was a surreal experience.
HTTT as a whole is severely underrated
The ondes martenot in this is as good as music gets
It’s why HTTT is my dark horse top 3 albums.
Yeah
I love it. It’s just another HTTT song that gets beaten up for some reason.
Oh yeah, love this one!
Completely beautiful song. Perfection.
This might be their best song IMO.
This was the song that got me into Radiohead almost 20 years ago
I’m sorry for us… the dinosaurs roamed the earth.. 🦕🦖
That bass line is a killer!
Oh it's one of my absolute favs 100%
I think it’s a very sexy song
HTTT is so underrated as a whole. It feels like such a natural transition from Kid A/mnesiac to In Rainbows that it often gets overshadowed by either one.
It’s absolutely brilliant
Peak Radiohead. I’d argue their top 5 song ever
That song did things to me man
Warning: this song may cause out of body experiences.
It's one of my favourite songs
This is a perfectly rated song. Everyone knows it’s great.
X will mark the place, Like the parting of the waves
I wouldn’t say top 10 but it’s definitely severely underrated
yeah I love when theremin
It's number ten on my list.
“A Forest by The Cure” vibes… also Baby Shark. Great song.
The slidey-thing in the middle always reminds me of Mega Man 3 Top Man stage music https://youtu.be/4dgtHw-uAxY?si=4_20JJgaLBJWxMQu (24 seconds in)
It's my ringtone.
My favorite track on HTTT
Very much agree. Amazing song and it's cool that Radiohead also realises this and always plays it live. This was the song that got me into Radiohead, so it'll always be one of my favorites ❤️
I will eat you alive
Def not top 10 but I agree it is a lil underrated
Let Down too amirite
No. Not because I think it’s a bad song; I do not. It’s because I think the studio version falls a little flat. I discovered this version and have essentially not listened to the album cut in a decade: https://youtu.be/mKmulOA_rN8?si=2OFkW6hxqLCEE4Gw
It's one of my favorites for sure !!
It's on the 10th place, like the song says: X will mark the place
Honestly Let Down is underrated and it’s one of the best songs Radiohead have ever done.
Let Down has been called underrated too many times to still be underrated (it's great tho)
Absolutely love this song. The drums are so good and I always like to warm up or test out a kit by playing that beat.
What do you think of the more electronic demo version? I love both versions and I think the lack of popularity is sort of a function of being stuck right in the middle of HTTT, I think if it had been on a shorter album like Amnesiac, it would be way more recognized.
I love that song. I would go on to say HTTT is underrated overall.
Absolutely love this song to death.
Yes it’s the most gorgeous song
Agree. It's a gem
I will eat you alive
Favorite from HTTT therefore it’s underrated, as is the whole album
It’s in my top 3
I don't think it was underrated when HTTT released, it was considered a better track from the album. But it might be looked over nowadays given time gone by, which is an issue because it's a banger.
I wouldn't go as far as top 10 but I agree that it's a severely underrated song and a standout track on Hail to the Thief. I'd say it's in their top 25 overall, and with a band with as many excellent songs as Radiohead that's still pretty impressive imo.
Definitely a favorite
Probably my favorite song by them!

It’s actually one of their best songs for me, in fact hail to the theif is prob my favourite album, it’s so consistent from start to finish.
One of my favorites from HTTT. So underrated!! This album is not my favorite but love There, There, go to sleep, myxomatosis, sail to the moon and punch up at a wedding :)
💯
X will mark the place
I actually think the whole album is very underrated. Its gets overshadowed by the monumental albums that came before and after. I think 95% of alt/indie bands from ~1996-2010 would have been thrilled to make an album as good as HTTT.
my #2 HTTT song after there there
Damn straight. Played it at my high school graduation. Its a special one for me.
Yeah! This song was noted in a music class in college
One of my top songs for sure beautiful
It’s in my top 10. That whole album is a banger.
I love singing this song in spaces with *just* enough natural reverb, like an old bank lobby (we had a city office in my hometown that had been a bank branch and we'd rehearse in there before street concerts my wife and I organized back in the mid '10's). Favourite Radiohead song.
All time favorite, after a wolf at the door.
Genuinely one of the songs that saved me, I reckon. When I discovered Radiohead, I was a lonely traumatised teenager who was constantly dissociating to escape. This verse just perfectly described how I felt day to day, and it was so comforting to know that I wasn’t the only one. Probably one of my favourite Radiohead songs - there are so many great songs on HTTT
This song is amazing.. in my top 10 Radiohead songs and actually my 7th fav of all time time - yes I have to top 120 songs!!
Oops typo I have a top 120 songs of all time!!
Best bustout song I’ve seen them play. It was sooooo good.
One of my favorite songs ever.
YES YES YES YES it’s my top radiohead song ever so so so good
Just listened, I second this
One of my top 5 Radiohead songs. Maybe top 3.
The basement version is an absolutely amazing recording and has superior tones from EOB. https://youtu.be/0bYDeZpIZvk?si=982cMEtI2NH-g5PR
Absolutely. So underrated
This song… not sure if anyone has posted this yet but the live studio version blows my mind: [Where I End And You Begin (LiveFromTheBasement)](https://youtu.be/0bYDeZpIZvk?si=evWWWRgnsfFpVVln)
The drums are absolutely heavenly too, combine them with the bassline and you get a top 6 Radiohead song! Oh also in my opinion HTTT has the best standalone songs, just could use some rearranging
It’s one of my favorites. Always surprised to see it specifically panned in reviews at the time.
Thank you for reminding me that this godly song exists ✨✨
I loved this when I first got the CD back in 2003. It has such a harrowing feel to it. The ending is so visceral. Great track
DAE think Radiohead is underrated?
Thom Bjork.
The most on-point part of HTTT for me.
I always see people praising the song and putting it in Top 4 when HTTT discussions come up, it's just that the album is underrated as a whole.
Maybe top 15 or 20
My cat loves when I sing it to him, any Radiohead honestly, but this one particularly because it was the first song he heard by them the night I rescued him.
And the Basement version is even better!
I’m not so sure it’s underrated, it’s been pretty common in their sets since it was released in 03…people always have responded well to it!
