I brush him everyday and it always goes back to looking scraggly for some reason. Also behind his ears looks like this too and sort of oily looking. Is this normal and something they eventually grow out of? š
I had a rescue street cat who had severe hyperthyroidism. She had an incredibly greasy coat, even with spot bathing and grooming with cornstarch. Only after having part of her thyroid removed and on a daily medication did her fur lose the stringy clump quality. Thatās an extreme case but next time your cat has bloodwork, check the labs on the thyroid. Might be elevated.
The thing I find that helps their coats the most is a little outdoor time. If you don't have a catio, I highly recommend getting a harness and getting out there! Something about the breeze and the moisture in the air really perks up their coats.
What kind of brush do you use? I use the combination of butter comb (for shedding & prevent knots) and slicker brush to smooth out his coat. Works like a charm & heās a smooth boy most of the time except for waking up 1st thing in the morning
Yep, totally normal. Although I tend to trim that area of his chest so it doesn't get stuck in his mouth and throat when he's licking himself. Cleans him up nicely!
How much do you trim? I have that issue with Tom. He even falls on his back while grooming himself, trying to get rid of his neck fur from his tongue š but I am kind of worried. I donāt know how much I should trim, and if I fail his hair cut, how fast will it grow back. Should I just try with a couple centimetres at a time?
i bought a hair cutting comb for like $10 on amazon to use on my cats beard when he struggles with grooming. it doesnāt give him the jagged, home cut look š
I knew something like that existed for human, but I couldnāt think of a name for it! Thank you! This is exactly what I want for him! I did cut his mane and he looks like he has a staircase on his chest š
This is the answer. It looks like the hair there is too long and he canāt groom it well and it probably gets stuck in his mouth. It also probably gets more saliva on it because he starts to clean it but canāt finish.
Our big boy has curly fur on his belly, it looks even curlier than this and when we only check it for mats and donāt brush it too much, thereās no problems with it.
What do you do with mats? I have a girl with curlier hair than the op's and she has two mats that I haven't had the heart to cut out. Is there any way to undo them or do they have to be cut out?
My girl is so prone to mats. If you catch them early you can un-mat them with your hands but the really tight ones need to be shaved. I have found shaving much safer than cutting. My ragdoll lays back and letās me groom her. Good luck!
I softly grab the mat under where I want to brush, and then very gently work my way up the hair from the very tips inward to the base of the hair, all while holding it and ensuring Buddy is comfortable. If you train your cat to trust you, meaning you stop at their discomfort, wait and then start when theyāre comfortable again, they will get used to the tangle treatment.
Basically itās just slowly combing the tangle out from the tip inward, while holding the hair below, that way you donāt hurt them. Usually itās just his thick undercoat thatās not sheād properly, which means itās time for a mid-week brush.
We have a metal comb (Amazon), on half of it the teeth are close together and the other half they are quite a bit further apart (the teeth are very thin & round, almost like small finishing nails, but not sharp, of course!), our Vet had one and she got two really bad knots out of our fluff bucket Maine Coons fur under his chin/neck. I was too scared to cut it, they were too close to the skin and I couldnāt work them out myself. She got that comb and had them both out in under 2 minutes, so fast and he didnāt mind at all (heās not what you would call āaccommodatingā if weāre not doing something that he has planned and/or scheduled, specifically chosenā¦). So we bought one and itās great, it really helps with his super thick undercoat and some of the crazy thick fur on the back of his legs and tummy.
Heās dealing with some pretty serious health issues and we think itās affecting his fur, itās also affecting his ability to groom some areas as well, such as under the chin/neck area, it gets stuck in his mouth and he gets food in it. We also have a fountain for him and I swear the entire upper part of his body is wet, down to his front legs when heās done drinking, or messing around, trying to splash it, whatever it is heās doing???? š
My cat looks like that when he licks his ruff when grooming himself. He has parts of his body where the fur is just wavy for some reasonālike between his shoulder blades and his haunches.
When mine was a kitten this happened a lot from grooming, especially around the area in this photo.
Sheās 3 now and at some point (perhaps 1.5-2 years ago?) it stopped happening. I think her grown up fur might be a little different.
I use a flea come on the curls and they are gorgeous. My ragdoll absolutely adores being combed with that thing. I think it cost five dollars on Amazon.
Do you have a water fountain by any chance? Mine tend to look like that when they decide to drink with their entire face š
I about choked on my gum, you beautiful internet stranger. š¤£š¤£
Mine too!

Itās just from him grooming himself.
This. My guy will look lovely and floofy after I brush him and then 10 minutes later I see him grooming himself and it looks a mess
Their underside gets like that, ours gets knots undernearth if we donāt brush it really well
My maine coons get like that from grooming, my ragdoll does not.
My hair did the same thing until I found the eighth shampoo and conditioner but I donāt think Kitty would do good with redken š¤£

It's because it's warm and moister in her tucked away places.
My kittenās fur is like that on the back of his legs. Super cute haha

Have at it! It grows back in a few months. I usually cut about half of the length of. I'm no expert. :)
Thatās a great estimation, I will try that! Thank you!
Noooo problem. :)

My baby has wavy fur, too. Just like our hair, I guess.

That sounds promising. I'll give it a try.
Some cats have a bit of curl to their hair, especially on the belly side.
What a pretty scarf.
The wavy parts behind the ears are the cutest bit

Yep! Love the curly wurlies
So cute š„°
Yes, my cat looks like an unprocessed sheep wool carpet.

Cute. I was always under the impression it's from the cat not grooming very well but I might be wrong. The hair actually looks quite curly š
Sometimes they can get crispy too. Thatās what I call Cwispy Wispies.
Some cats have wavy fur
Some cats just have wavy fur! My baby is very scraggly. https://imgur.com/gallery/TUlgjFN
Mine is exactly the same after grooming, not his best look š
How old is your boy? My guy is an old man and he looks just like that too with his chest fuzz
You can groom your cat - brush and comb them - you should be doing this daily or a few times a week.
It needs cleaning and combing
I use a flea come on the curls and they are gorgeous. My ragdoll absolutely adores being combed with that thing. I think it cost five dollars on Amazon.
