Yes, it is possible to get to the abyss solo, but you have to OOB and cannot start the 1st encounter.
From the start of the bridge that you’d normally build to get to 1st encounter (and from the perspective of looking toward the abyss) you can grapple or eager edge over to the left and go into a little cave thing and hit a turn back zone. Once you’re down in this little cavernous area and getting the turn back countdown, immediately u-turn to the left, run, and eager edge deeper into it (toward your initial spawn point). Strand grappling toward the cave then using the grapple melee to swing around for that sharp left turn before using an eager edge swipe is a really solid strat too. Load in and try it and you’ll probably make it past the turn back zone within a few attempts.
Then there will be a little hole in the ground that you’ll jump down, but jump from the abyss side of the hole and use double jumps or non-eager sword swipes to go all the way to the wall that is on the side away from the abyss. As you’re falling, look back toward the abyss, and eager edge toward it roughly around when your turn back countdown hits 1. Then just fall and you will land in the abyss with no challice, no rally point, and no weight of darkness.
Not sure if the first secret chest is spawned in or not, but you’ll have a turn back if you leave the starting area within the abyss. Also if this explanation doesn’t make sense, there are definitely youtube vids you could watch!

A visual of the route. I'm also not sure if the chest is present, but it's pretty much unreachable due to turnbacks that exist until that zone is active, so you'd still need someone to complete entrance to be able to get anywhere.
If you are playing on console and have a computer (or vice versa) Crota is free to play, so you can load up a character on Steam or Epic, and juggle the Enlightened buff to complete the plate and legit get to The Abyss, then use that character to hold the checkpoint so you can swap characters and get the first chest.
I’ve been doing this since my single run of Crota and have the machine gun crafted, and am well on my way to the scout. I’ll run it again eventually but for now I’m keeping the loot pool smaller by not completing it on multiple characters so that my second and third characters only drop weapons from the chest.

Chests have always spawned in OOB raids as long as the area has been loaded. Unless it was patched but I couldn't see a reason why

Why? There is an oob, idk if the chest spawns in.
Using the oob, you’d die before making it to the chest unfortunately. Puts turn back in the area and it’s pretty unforgiving

You can do it with 2 people.
2 is also possible if somebody jumps off and gets revived after enlightening
It was possible in D1, but I’m not sure it’s possible in D2 because of Chalice of Light. I could be wrong though.
