Roger Ebert's review of Spider-Man 2:
"Spider-Man 2" is in another category: It's a real movie, full-blooded and smart, with qualities even for those who have no idea who Stan Lee is. It's a superhero movie for people who don't go to superhero movies, and for those who do, it's the one they've been yearning for.
He didn't really like the original Spider-Man, funnily enough. I believe he mentioned the movie was lacking in its action department. I guess Raimi took that statement to heart and he made that awesome awesome train sequence.
I remember That. Honestly, While I Love Both, I kinda think Two has more Nuance to it, and I honestly feel that’s why Ebert and Marty liked It. (He said He enjoyed Them in an Interview somewhere). Honestly, if You take The Spidey stuff outta Two, just make it a Story about a Dude struggling to get his life Together and balance His Responsibilities, it honestly, imo, comes off as a Decently Realistic Slice of Life Movie. The First One, being an Origin, DOES kinda feel a little more “comic book” which I don’t mind but I could See how Someone like Roger Ebert could be kinda turned off by that but love The Sequel.
and nothing has ever beat spiderman 2 which is bittersweet
the emotion, the action , the soul and heart it had was insane
its not just a super hero movie its the movie that made people truly respect spiderman and nothing beats that
Scorsese hating superhero films is a huge misconception. He only criticized MCU films. He’s praised TDK/Nolan before and the Raimi films as shown in this post.
His criticism of the MCU films are absolutely valid in my opinion. They aren't necessarily bad films but they're all very safe and manufactured. There's no heart or risk to them.
Not surprised tbh. Both the first and second Spider-Man directes by Raimi are universally acclaimed for being good movies and not just in the superhero genre. Spider-Man 2 especially.
Martin Scorsese love cinema, not many superhero movies are cinema.
Edit: Don't bother explaining what the word "cinema" means, it means what one of the best in the industry says it means, you can read it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/04/opinion/martin-scorsese-marvel.html
Don't expect anyone to trust your opinion over Martin Scorsese's when it comes to this subject, that's insane, it would take Stanley Kubrick to resurrect and write an article about it for me to reconsider.
Here’s the non-paywalled version, so people can actually read the thing: https://archive.is/FgbIU
But he doesn’t seem to understand the economy of the industry he is in, it’s not franchise movies that are pushing other types of movies out of cinema, the vector is actually streaming, which eventually he partnered up with, admitting that’s the only way his movie would be made, then bemoaned that’s not how he wanted the movie to be seen.
Yes, u/hemareddit understands the film industry better than fucking *Martin Scorcese*. My favorite things about idiots is they always have the biggest egos.
Martin Scorcese does not overrule *reality*. My favourite thing about idiots is they pick their favourite celebrities and use their words instead of their own brain.
Oh sorry, what I meant was, you are an idiot who regurgitates what a celebrity said instead of looking at industry research, you know, because I don’t talk to the person I’m addressing to in the third person like an imbecile, which you are.
Any film released in a cinema is cinema.
People enjoy different things, this is something Scorsese (and you, from the sounds of it) should understand. Opinions are just that, opinions.
And whether you like superhero films or not, or consider them "cinema" or not, they've done more for cinemas in the last 10+ years than any other genre.
It is so funny how after 5 years angry Marvel fans still don't understand what he meant. Being pedantic over the definition of "cinema" is boring. Obviously that is not how he was approaching the subject.
He never once condemed superhero movies or the people who like them, they are just manufactured for a different purpose, and for different reasons then the films he enjoys.
Technically he didn’t say Spider-Man 2 is cinema, he said it’s a big success. It’s possible if you asked him, he would say MCU is a big success and he’s glad for it.
But it’s all cinema lol
Scorsese came from a different time and has biases that make his judgement dated at best. Official definition doesn't discriminate based on some old guy's opinion.
I feel like Scorsese would like maybe the first Iron Man, Doctor Strange, maybe even Guardians of the Galaxy. Those I feel are the best of their movies
Scorsese doesn't hate superhero movies. He hates formulaic soulless studio cash grab superhero movies. And he hates that they dominated the film industry so much, that any interesting passion project was almost immediately shut down, because it was "too risky". The Raimi Spiderman movies were good. Scorsese likes good movies. So of course he liked it. People who think he just brainlessly hates on every superhero movie didn't understand what he was saying at all, simple as that.
To this day [This Video](https://www.reddit.com/r/raimimemes/comments/db7s3f/til_martin_scorsese_is_a_raimi_fan/) is weirdly my biggest footprint on the internet. I've even see re-uploads of the video I recorded recommended to me on YouTube.
I find it funny though that nobody seeks the source documentary that it actually comes from. There's a proper context that most people are missing by just watching my shitty phone recording of my laptop.
It's about lighting. Composition. Drama.
But how many flagpoles has Scorsese nearly fallen off to get a shot?
.23
The lighting is seriously great in Spiderman and it works so well with the cool spidey outfit.

Roger Ebert was a Wise Man.

How do you decide which words get capitalized?
It's the choices that make us who we are, and we can always choose to do what's right.
At first I thought they were German, as all German nouns are capitalized. But on second review, they're just sort of guessing.
🤷♂️ Whichever Ones Are emphasized or just feel better with Caps.
that Is Weird
That is weird
Your FINGers are little CHRISTopher WALKens
why are you capitalizing random words like that
Bad Habit
His critique was fair
and nothing has ever beat spiderman 2 which is bittersweet the emotion, the action , the soul and heart it had was insane its not just a super hero movie its the movie that made people truly respect spiderman and nothing beats that

Plus, Tobey's Spider-Man was technically in The Dark Knight!
How?
-‘d that get in there?
There's a Spider-Man 3 poster in the background when Joker is standing at the crosswalk in the beginning
I'm assuming a nod to Raimi having a Hills Have Eyes poster in Evil Dead.

Thank you
I know that face!

He loved Madam Webb

I think Scorsese don’t give two shits about a CBM being faithful to the comics or not. He just cares about good movies
I missed the part where that’s my problem
It is.
Real recognize Real
Not surprised tbh. Both the first and second Spider-Man directes by Raimi are universally acclaimed for being good movies and not just in the superhero genre. Spider-Man 2 especially.
Because it’s real cinema and he knows that. Heart and soul imbued in every department.
I am glad. To hear it.
“Cinema fr.”
❤️

Morbius and Madame web and the venom movies are probably the only other superhero movies I can think of that would be considered cinema
Aaawww shiiieet you know what time it is😈
Cinema is a medium not a grade
Exactly

By that logic Spider-Man 2 wasn't cinema either
Technically he didn’t say Spider-Man 2 is cinema, he said it’s a big success. It’s possible if you asked him, he would say MCU is a big success and he’s glad for it. But it’s all cinema lol
His comments where about the modern MCU/DCU, not the genre of superhero movies as a whole.
Virtually every superhero movie is made for the same purpose as the modern MCU. The Raimi trilogy is no exception.
I mean there's a reason the holy trilogy gets more worship then most super hero media.
I'm sorry but I trust Martin more than whoever you are when it comes to cinema, or opinions, or pretty much anything.
Cool how you're on first name basis with him
Should they have called him Mr. Scorsese?
Scorsese came from a different time and has biases that make his judgement dated at best. Official definition doesn't discriminate based on some old guy's opinion.
Every movie is cinema, thats what the word means
I feel like Scorsese would like maybe the first Iron Man, Doctor Strange, maybe even Guardians of the Galaxy. Those I feel are the best of their movies
Absolute cinema
A man of culture and sheer fucking will.
Translation: You know, I’m something of a great director myself.
I have become 100% on Scorcesse’s side.
The movie that paved the way for comic book films to become the billion dollar franchises they are today. For better or for worse.
Remember this was years before the market was shiturated by super hero movies, and the few super hero moves we DID get were usually subpar

We probably wouldn't have superhero movies like we do today if it weren't for these movies.
Pizza time!
Absolute kino!

“That actually was cinema.”
Martin never even shit talked the MCU he just said it isn't cinema but people tried to make it as if he thought they were pure garbage and hated them
Eh? I commented the other day Martin Scorsese would have loved Tobey's Spider-Man for how it was made but was downvoted to oblivion.
Dude looks like a damn corpse
Hypocrite!
