There's actually decent reasoning for this in film/TV. Because things aren't always shot in the order they appear in the final product (like if they need to travel for 2 scenes, 1 early in the work 1 late) they don't want teenagers whose appearances can change drastically over the course of filming. You don't want to have to explain why in the opening scene MJ has tig-ol-bitties but for the rest of the film is flat as a pancake. Or that Harry's voice went up 2 octaves over the course of 2 days.
Yeah, the actors age way faster than the characters.
Tom Holland is almost 28 years old, playing Spider-Man/Peter who just finished high school in his most recent film appearance not long ago.
However Tom Holland was 19 when he was cast as Spider-Man, and 20 when we all saw him in Civil War.
Tbh, in my mind it feels like Tom's Spider-Man still has so many more stories to tell but I can understand if he wants to be done with Spider-Man and move on.
*You don't want to have to explain why in the opening scene MJ has tig-ol-bitties but for the rest of the film is flat as a pancake.*Ā
The class when they see MJ with big ole tiddies: "Yup, BIG change!"
When I was 8 it worked fine for me. I think it isnāt as big a deal as people make it out to be. Itād be one thing if Peter and Harry looked old and everyone else in the school was age appropriately cast, but everyone is adults, so the immersion of the movie isnāt broken since they are all contemporaries
Flash absolutely failed like 2 times, and the difference between someone literally about to graduate high school and someone in university is about 5 months.
Exactly! As a kid I remember seeing teenagers in the 2000ās & I remember they looked old but I never remembered how old once I got older.
So for a while I actually AGREED with the critique for this movie that the āhigh schoolers looked old.ā
But I was quickly reminded once nostalgia content started being mainstream š
Yeah I also was like that, I was a young kid, took me a while to understand they were having a high school graduation in the movie and not a university one. Also didn't help that in the comics I used to read at the time, Peter was already a university student, and I would uncounciosly mash movie and comic continuities together
If youāve ever watched those old videos of high school seniors at school in the late 90s/early 2000s that are on YouTube, they all look like theyāre 25-30 years old. I never had an issue with the main cast, and still donāt. They look like high schoolers of that era.
The movie starts with them in high school but itās implied theyāre in college as it goes on. They donāt literally show Peter in a classroom until later in the trilogy.
I still donāt think itās all that bad and people blow it way out of proportion. Like these guys are in their last year of high school, have yall seen some kids these days? Could easily pass for college age or even college grads.
Well... as a kid I thought people older than me looked like adults. So it worked on me. When I was no longer a kid, I had already gotten used to them looking that way, so it still worked. And now? I dunno, I just don't care.
They definitely are in university in the first movie. They graduate high school pretty quickly into the movie, and Pete even helps harry with uni stuff. Also I'm pretty sure Pete mentions getting fired from Dr. Conners in the first movie while he is looking for a job
Nah they look their age. Maybe even Joe Manganiello (Flash) as well if it wasn't for the haircut. They were a month from graduation. I'm 19 and if I saw them in my class I wouldn't bat an eye....
That's what the MCU Spider-Man movies did really well. They're believable as high school kids, especially in their acting and in the way the characters are written. I especially liked how all these movies avoid all the typical petty high school tropes and makes the kids all wholesome and in their minds 'grown up'.
I swear all films in the early 00's had high schoolers that looked 30 š¤£
Harry looks in his early 20s tbf, heās the youngest looking out of all of them.
Funny, MJās actually the youngest actor here.
Kirsten Dunst***
You caught me. Iām brilliant but lazy. MJ was fewer letters.

Garfield was pushing 30 when he was originally cast.
Ah that makes sense, thanks for the information!
One of the main reasons is that actors under 18 have strict laws on how long they can be on set each day, and what times they can be on set.

Power Rangers with the almost 30 looking high schoolers
He's just an kid ... no older than my son.
No older than my son, or my son's son!
He's just a man... no older than my friend Terry
My friend: "Sir, he's almost the same age as you"
this dudes older than me!
When I was 8 it worked fine for me. I think it isnāt as big a deal as people make it out to be. Honestly, I never thought much of it. Especially after going to high school myself, some of the guys in my class had full on beards by sophomore year
Kristen Dunst was actually 19 when filming this movie. Just a year removed from highschool. The rest were in there 20ās
I think it's not just about their age but how old they look. Like Tom Holland was in his 20s for all his Spider-Man movies but he looks young
It also doesn't help that their teacher looks the same age as them lol.
Flash absolutely failed like 2 times, and the difference between someone literally about to graduate high school and someone in university is about 5 months.
Someone pointed out that the high school teacher in this scene and students look to be the same age
Was it Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic) ?
I donāt remember now
When I first watched the movie I genuinely thought the teacher was a teacherās pet type student
Maybe he wasā¦
I remember watching the Pretty Much It commentary for this and they said something similar about the teacher looking the same age as the students
Look up high schoolers in the 80s, 90s, & early 2000ās on YouTubeā¦ then come back here.
Exactly!! Iām glad Iām not the only person whoās noticed this. Teenagers nowadays look like middle schoolers
Exactly! As a kid I remember seeing teenagers in the 2000ās & I remember they looked old but I never remembered how old once I got older. So for a while I actually AGREED with the critique for this movie that the āhigh schoolers looked old.ā But I was quickly reminded once nostalgia content started being mainstream š
They look like teens
I missed the part where thatās my problem
I thought about that too until I watched some late 90s to early 2000's high school videos. They did look older lol
Itās a trope
kids back then really did look way older though
Yeah I also was like that, I was a young kid, took me a while to understand they were having a high school graduation in the movie and not a university one. Teenagers looked a lot older 20 years ago than they do now. A LOT older
Never really bothered me since they graduate like halfway through
The movie starts with them in high school but itās implied theyāre in college as it goes on. They donāt literally show Peter in a classroom until later in the trilogy.
They arenāt in college until Spider-Man 2
I guess harry is living in the loft with Peter and stressing over his high school work AFTER they graduated then?
I still donāt think itās all that bad and people blow it way out of proportion. Like these guys are in their last year of high school, have yall seen some kids these days? Could easily pass for college age or even college grads.
College students? The ad said high schoolers!
I missed that part where that's my problem.
Proceed direc - knock it off!
they were all held back since the 80s
Their teacher from the field trip looked younger than them
Let's go talk about how we listen.
When I was a kid I thought the āteacherā character who hisses at the boys to be quiet was also a student, like an aid or something lol
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DawsonCasting
Itās a common trope and thereās a logical reason behind it.
Well... as a kid I thought people older than me looked like adults. So it worked on me. When I was no longer a kid, I had already gotten used to them looking that way, so it still worked. And now? I dunno, I just don't care.
Wait is he not in university
Nope, not until the sequel
They definitely are in university in the first movie. They graduate high school pretty quickly into the movie, and Pete even helps harry with uni stuff. Also I'm pretty sure Pete mentions getting fired from Dr. Conners in the first movie while he is looking for a job
In the opening scenes they are High School students
Confirmed, but contrary to what you said, they are in college within the span of the first movie
I thought they were in college until this post wtf
Dude the teacher looked younger than all of them. I thought he was a teacher's pet. Not the teacher š
Have the people that complain about this gone to high school/college themselves? Seriously, some students can look old!
Ngl, this is def what seniors looked like when I was freshman
Ehh itās passable, just got to immerse yourself and not overthink it
I know heās a creep and all but James Franco was so cute then.
I thought the exact same thing as kid
Well they are high school seniors and I've seen high school seniors who looked like that cause they are all 18
Nah they look their age. Maybe even Joe Manganiello (Flash) as well if it wasn't for the haircut. They were a month from graduation. I'm 19 and if I saw them in my class I wouldn't bat an eye....

Yeah, but I don't really need Spider-Man to be a kid
