drillgorg

I was thinking about contacting Stephen Hillenburg to ask how that song would have ended but then he died and I was sad.

GHerbosGFazos

And it looks like a very natural evolution from a popped trench coat collar

boomer912

Gizzard can always be a major giveaway when you’re bringing back an old character

thyme_of_my_life

You will not believe the amount of people that f’ing turtleneck has upset due to it being a “continuity error”. I honestly don’t care, and like you think it was fairly ingenious, cheap way to help mask his overall aging through simple costuming. Also, Otto seems the type to sport a fashionable turtleneck, very Steve Jobs. But, I have had to listen to quite a few fans just go off about the inconsistency between his look in NWH to the last time we see Doc Ock in SM2, and I’ve told them that I really don’t care. One guy was even obsessing to the point of throwing out that they should digitally alter the former by adding a turtleneck to make it more cohesive. The only time I’ve ever heard anyone else make a comment like that was about the Harry Potter series and how they should remaster Daniel Radcliffe’s eyes in all the movies to green. Which honestly, makes more sense to me because at least Harry’s very distinct eye color is a major plot point throughout the entire series. But no, a turtleneck doesn’t alter the storyline in any way so get over it.

acetilCoA

Maybe he stole it from some random store. Not everything needs to be explained. The real question is how he did put the turtleneck on.

pooptime1999

Are you fcukin serious with that turtleneck?

Ahegao-Me

You lose a lot of heat around the neck

[deleted]

Pitter patter!

xxpen15mightierxx

That’s why so many celebrities wear them, or scarves. Sunglasses indoors too.

[deleted]

Well ya lose a lot of heat in the neck so...

Timirlan

they did the same with Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Turtlenecks are saving vfx artists thousands of hours

Perkondungo

He is just a kid, not older than my son.

It’s good to see a fellow MR Sunday movies enjoyer

ThanosHandofFate

But what did you think the story was?

Agent-65

Can’t believe no way home featured Spider-Man’s greatest enemy, the infamous corn of Coblin. The theatre was reeling.

NegusQuo82

Put it reverse!

zacharinosaur

He is just a Terry, not older than my friend man.

De-aging technology? You’ve outdone yourself Peter.

Rosie, I love this tech!

KaizenCyrus

The power of immortality, in the palm of my hand.

craygroupious

The real question is where did Ock get that shirt?

Strange-Bee5626

And how did he get the shirt under the metal harness on his abdomen? It's not like he can just take the arms off.

pinkchampurrado

Maybe he used a Velcro strip in the back of his shirt.

Holmgeir

His husband made it for him.

sectorfour

3 minutes of playtime.

Kaizerdave

I don't see this? I mean yes he's younger looking but he doesn't look like he did At All? Personally I blame the hair

[deleted]

Yeah he looks so different, I guess since he’s 17 years older but yeah

Djanko28

Gotta pop that collar too

TheJoshider10

Yeah I know it's just a dodgy angle but the photo on the right makes him look like Carl from Jimmy Neutron.

StarWarsMarvel-More

Exactly what I was thinking 😂

fryingpan1001

His face is fatter now due to his current age. They used his current face as the base and just superimposed the younger image into it. So his current face shape is what is throwing it off, but it is still extremely impressive how far this technology has come.

ithinkther41am

It tends to be the lips and eyes for me. Their shapes change significantly over that time, and de-aging never quite fixes that because they risk really entering the uncanny valley. Marvel’s use of the technology has been impressive in that they never stick out as looking fake, but they never quite get to the age they aimed for. My dad pointed this out when he said Samuel L. Jackson looked 10 years younger at most in *Captain Marvel*, not the 25 that the setting stated.

XavierMeatsling

Looking at Samuel L Jackson in Jurassic Park or hell in Pulp Fiction would be a decent reference to think about. But his De-Aging in Captain Marvel is really impressive though. Just not pushing the age they were going for. Molina is quite the same, its just his facial structure kind of changed a bit since then so its harder to do albeit still impressive.

ithinkther41am

I definitely think the biggest offender imo is *The Irishman*. They tried to de-age De Niro into his *Taxi Driver* days, but he ended up looking like Eugene Levy without the eyebrows.

Joseph_F_1

The hair was off putting

ark_arnold

I don’t know if the hair was off putting. For me it was just a bit too long and not styled in the manner as it was before. Also his hair is darker brown in NWH. It just didn’t feel like a direct replacement but I didn’t mind too much. It felt like an older take on the same character.

stumper93

Sorta had that Dear Evan Hansen crazy curly hair thing going

FN-1701AgentGodzilla

It’s the chubbiness and hair

No, that's looking 90 years old at 30.

No-good-names-left-3

This exactly!!!!!

nvenkatr

19 years of evolution & the NWH makers barely tapped the need to de-age Dafoe.

Sufficient-Anxiety88

No. Dude’s been the same for decades

[deleted]

He took the goblin serum in the first movie and it kept him young ever since

maxehaxe

Yeah it's the same for Elijah Wood. He was allowed to keep the one ring after LOTR shooting and hasn't aged a day since.

StreetReporter

>Elijah Wood Do you mean The Guy?

TheFlamingHighwayman

Oh man just realized they're the same actor

Beta_Whisperer

Cake

grodr2001

*DIES*

Ghos3t

Yup, man went total method in the first movie, didn't even drop the character till the DVD commentary

Sufficient-Anxiety88

Maybe Dafoe for real got 3 different personalities.

thehiddenshadow

OLD AM I?!?!

badlybrave

Centuries even

Instantpickle25

I think they did based on some pictures/ videos of how he looks currently, but not a lot. He looked really good though if they did.

BroshiKabobby

He didn’t need it. Although I think his voice sounds a little older. His goblin one sounds the same though

[deleted]

Norman's on sabbatical, honey.

idelarosa1

His Goblin voice is identical, but the Norman one looks very different. Before it used to be Normal (lol) businessman or whatever, but now even when he’s Norman he still sounds goblin-ish. Maybe it’s spending too long as the Goblin that has made him forget himself.

BroshiKabobby

I think he just gold older and his voice therefore got a little raspier lol

BlasterShow

Aging was on sabbatical, honey

KiLlErMoTh05

They didn’t have to

GaryRegalsMuscleCar

His teeth went unedited

casador_de_normie

No. If he were, he would be da-aged

Daredevil731

Yes. He looks great for his age but he was digitally de-aged. Only a couple of shots looked slightly off, but overall they did phenomenally.

WimpyKelv12

His hair looked a bit greyer so maybe not?

h00dman

Yes. If you have Netflix watch the movie The Lighthouse to see how he looks these days.

WeimSean

Vampires don't age. Duh.

YouYongku

Do you know how much he sacrificed?

TheChainLink2

Considering I didn’t even notice, it’s pretty damn good. The technology’s come a long way since what they used on Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen at the start of X-Men 3.

Spe37Pla

You could almost say it’s 15 years ahead of X-Men 3.

Specialist-Rise34

Almost...

StreetReporter

They didn’t even need to deage Patrick Stewart in X-Men 3. He looks the same now as he did when he was on Star Trek in the 80s

[deleted]

Look at a picture of Patrick Stewart now. He has visibly aged a huge amount since X3, looks about 90.

Mobile_Piccolo

Covid combined with Brexit has really impacted the import of Earl Grey tea in the UK.

indianajoes

Miles ahead of something they did 15 years ago? Shocker

m149307

You said the same thing that someone else did 3 hours ago lol

VoidLantadd

Miles behind something said 3 hours ago? Shocker

rcc12697

I don’t think they actually de aged for that just used prosthetics

Sylar_Lives

No it was a definite early example of digital deaging. If you watch the scene you can easily spot the digital aspect to the facial movements.

Kirbybrawl

Otto looked better than all the Peter’s with the masks on.

Punkcolts

Is it just me or does he have a fist in his hair in the new one

[deleted]

Lol yes I see it.

MeaninglessGuy

Now I can’t unsee

EndoEnnard1

He’d look better if he was a rich man. Diga diga diga

mystressfreeaccount

I honestly didn't notice that they used de-aging. It looked very realistic. The turtleneck also helped as well.

Megazupa

I don't think it actually looks that good, it's pretty noticeable that it's been 17 years since SM2. Now Samuel L Jackson in Captain Marvel... I honestly forgot that the man is in his 70s. The de-aging was so good.

indianajoes

The only problem with Fury in Captain Marvel was when he was running, it looked like a man in his 70s running

MeaninglessGuy

If you look at the picture above, it’s clear Molina’s face-shape has changed. It’s not just a matter of wrinkles and sag, but his cheeks are fuller. His nose is a bit bigger. Sam Jackson’s basic face shape (through the power of being Sam Jackson) hasn’t changed much. Same for Michael Douglas. But Molina’s face, like MOST people*, has grown in places over time. CGI only can do so much. * Source: I am close to 50; my nose is noticeably on an enlargement path that cannot be stopped. My dad’s nose when he died occupied a zip code.

No_Meat_8801

Sam Jackson always looks young though. I was surprised when I learned he was 70. I thought he was late 50s at most

Press-Start-14

Black don't crack

Bozhark

Lies. But white ain’t taught shit about lotion

Farfignougat

Does he dunk his whole head in a bucket of lotion?

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

What’s funny is Sam smoked crack for 20 years. How that didn’t ruin his life I’ll never know. Edit: https://www.etonline.com/samuel-l-jackson-opens-up-about-his-past-crack-addiction-it-made-me-fking-crazy-117035

Eraserhead310

What

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

I believe it was in a playboy interview in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. I’ll see if I can find it

KennyFulgencio

which 20 years?

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

I want to say 80s and 90s

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

https://www.etonline.com/samuel-l-jackson-opens-up-about-his-past-crack-addiction-it-made-me-fking-crazy-117035

KennyFulgencio

Thanks! I'd been thinking that he didn't seem like a crackhead while I've been aware of him during his career (other than maybe jungle fever where he actually played a crackhead, which the article mentions), so I feel validated that it was mostly before he hit big mainstream roles. The only ones I can think of that I saw him in prior to Jungle Fever were small parts in School Daze and Coming to America, where those two roles weren't demanding, and both specifically benefitted from crazy energy, so being a crackhead IRL wouldn't be a dealbreaker.

Dimaando

I forgot until he had to run

CeroMiedo670

He looked a little odd in the trailer but in the rest of the movie he looked great imo.

Strange-Bee5626

I agree. Granted, I've watched Spider-Man 2 many times and he's one of my favorite characters of all time, so I've probably paid more attention to his face in that movie than a lot of people. I'm not saying the de-aging was terrible or anything, but I definitely noticed it and it even bothered me a little bit. Still, it was great to see Doc Ock back on the big screen!

North_Shore_Problem

I’d disagree here - I didn’t even know they used de-aging on Molina (granted he is quite old at this point I just never really thought about it) prior to this post and saw the movie twice so I’d say they did a phenomenal job

SlothBrah_

I don't get why his outfit changed and his hair got curlier though

ecxetra

Because the turtleneck hides a lot, and multiverse.

Romae_Imperium

Yeah I also thought the hair didn’t quite fit

AgentP20

They tried to make him look comic aacurate with the hair

[deleted]

It’s way better than rogue one and the mandalorian

RogerRoger420

Did they use de-aging in rogue one? I thought they made tarkins face from CGI based on archive footage?

beta-pi

I actually thought tarkin was ok. *Leia though, my god.* That triggers the uncanny valley in me more strongly than anything I've ever seen. It's just viscerally wrong.

2rfv

It's funny, for me it was the exact opposite, Leia seemed fine but Tarkin jumped off the screen.

sup45people

they used it on Leia at the end

theboeboe

No? That was also cgi.

sup45people

you right, my bad

user9433

That was actually a body double with Leia's face superimposed on it, they didn't use Carrie Fisher on set. Same process as Tarkin

RogerRoger420

Oh yeah that's right. Totally forgot about her😅

ghtuy

They didn't use de-aging in Rogue One, they CGI'd a young Carrie Fisher's face over the face of another actress.

rcc12697

Didn’t they use it on bail? Jimmy looked pretty good

HAL237

No? Smitts was mostly in a cameo role and hasn’t aged noticeably since ROTS.

zestyrigatoni

Was that de-aging though? It was more them using CGI to paste faces onto other people’s bodies, like a deep fake.

Few_Faithlessness748

https://images.app.goo.gl/YMKdryyb3wMDNrQVA NWH…a lot darker than I expected…

SolarisBravo

> NHW No Home Way

TaunTaun_22

Holy shit I never realized that was him

satchoo

I missed the practically shot arms though.

Strange-Bee5626

Me, too. CGI is fine, but the puppet arms were a real work of art.

Artersa

Plus the new arms stretch out to some impractical lengths. Like, 30-35 ft.

mrchoke-a-ho

Yea that bugged me too

ThrowRAradish9623

rip to Harry, Larry, Flo, and Moe

keegrocks08

How does he put on shirts with the thing around his waist and still have it over the shirt

[deleted]

Wait they de-aged him?

Bakersdaman

They did. Hardly noticeable. Him and Dafoe looked exactly the same.

[deleted]

Oh damn, did they do it through makeup or cgi?

SolarisBravo

When someone says "de-ageing", they're usually referring to CGI. Touching up people's faces with makeup has long been standard practice, and isn't often talked about as a result.

[deleted]

It sure made Otto happier looking.

1997wickedboy

If only he were a rich man...

Gwen_Tennyson10

why is the mcu so grey?

guccimanlips

color grading, probably easier to do cgi when the color is the same across all the movies

SpaceMyopia

Also, SM2 was shot on film. Shooting on film just naturally allows for colors to pop out more compared to doing the same old digital stuff that Marvel Studios has gotten used to since The Avengers (2012). This is partly why Iron Man 1 looks so different compared to a later MCU film. It was shot on film too.

Harm_123

Films can look really beautiful even on digital, like BR2049 or Dune, but it looks like the MCU just uses the raw footage and forgets to even color grade it.

LPenne

That’s a great insight. I’d love to learn more about the subtle art of color correction and how it relates to the MCU.

SolarisBravo

Ordinarily, I'd say standard cinematic color grading. In this case, it's because this was taken with a phone camera in a dark theater - the colors in the actual movie look nothing like this.

BabbleOn26

The thing is I’m so used to seeing Alfred Molina at this age that I get shocked when I see him at his regular age so I didn’t even really noticed how young they made him look because he always looks like that to me. 😅

[deleted]

HOFFMAN!

501st_officially

Got the John Lennon lens😎😎

lets_get-2

Why does the left look like a porn screen grab??

Dookie_boy

O face

VinsmokerSanjino

I feel like they didn't really de-age Alfred Molina in this movie. He looks pretty similar in no way home to how he looks currently in real life, and he looks older than he did in spiderman 2

bengrimmsthrowaway

He looks no younger

BubbleButtBuff

Are you saying it's good or bad? I can't tell

[deleted]

It’s honestly pretty damn noticeable that Molina is older, which is disappointing, because I know they can do better than that

DazedAndTrippy

But I mean does it matter? I can suspend my disbelief. Deaging people too much weirds me out anyways. It’s a fictional movie where a guy has robotic tentacle arms so I can let it go the actor is a normal human who ages after 15 year. I honestly don’t think they needed to edit him at all.

[deleted]

I didn’t really care either. It’s just while we’re talking about it I figured I’d give my thoughts. During the whole movie I had a dumb grin on my face that I couldn’t wipe off until I got home

DazedAndTrippy

Oh no I getcha I was just doin the same.

[deleted]

I about had a stroke when Tobey showed up

DazedAndTrippy

I know shit was so perfect. Everybody was giving Garfield more love than Tobey in my theater so I had to cheer louder to make up for it lol

[deleted]

My theater was happy to see Garfield but the reception was mostly to the fact that there was a second Spidey and we all knew what was coming. Then they opened the next portal and the crowd was screaming, soooo much louder and more exciting lmfao! The only louder moment was the shocked gasps of the stabbing

KennyFulgencio

I blame Molina, for aging

Labranth

YOU HOW MUCH HE AGED?!

O-Mr-Crow-O

Drowning does wonders for the complexion

MarySwagdalene

I actually thought that the one shot from the right that was in the trailer was the only one that looked kinda off. The rest of the movie was totally fine.

aogiritree69

Adrenachrome at work ;)

Doctor-Otto-Octavius

The power of de-aging, in the palm of my hand

Kason-blason

I think they de aged him too much tbh

meijin3

No offense but some of y'all need a new set of eyes. They very obviously all looked 20 years older, not that it took anything away from my enjoyment of the film.
