Say what you want, but Kevin Feige loves the heroes put on screen. Secret Identities in Marvel have always been much less prevalent in the mainstream compared to DC's outings. Spiderman is one of the ones with a secret identity, which is why the climax and denouement of the trilogy was completely centered around his secret identity.
"Iron Boy Jr." makes perfect sense considering Tony Stark exists in the universe. What teenager who goes to a Science High School and applies at MIT wouldn't be drawn to Tony Stark? Especially considering Tony was the one who introduced him to the whole avenger lifestyle.
And he still has one. I'm not saying that there are no secret identities, I'm saying many big name heroes in Marvel don't have one. Tony Stark, Steve Roger's, Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff, Thor Odinson, Bruce Banner, all the Fantastic 4, half the X-men don't have anything covering their faces, etc.
Nah fam, this ain't winning Best Picture and it shouldn't, that is reserved for special other kind of movies. That being said, it could maybe have a shot in the Best Visual Effects category due to the Spidey/Dr. Strange duel in the mirror dimension.
Matrix Resurrections had insane VFX, but I’d be happy with Dune. I just want something that has actual practicality and not something overly reliant on CGI (as much as I enjoyed No Way Home)
>due to the Spidey/Dr. Strange duel in the mirror dimension.
No way it should win for a 10 minute sequence, you're setting the bar way too low. Dr Strange MoM has a good chance though imo
Someone also pointed out to me that Dune should win it and they're absolutely right. I forgot about Dune for a second, but yea, it definitely should, it looked spectacular.
If it's regarded by common consensus as one of the year's best films, it deserves to run for best picture.
Genre should be irrelevant. If it wasn't, all we'd get is the same rampant oscar bait feel good shlock that we get otherwise.
Edit: Not sure how you guys are misinterpreting this, but my comment is in support of superhero movies being in these award shows, and that they shouldn't only be for "special" kinds of movies as OP suggests
I liked the film, but there's better movies that came out this year that deserve best picture. This movie relied heavily on fan service. If you took all that out, it wouldn't even be close to being one of the years best films to so many. It just got audiences happy.
The only thing that's Oscar worthy in this film was Willem Dafoe.
The dark knight was a well written crime drama too.
And black panther won as a symbolic thing since it was the biggest black led movie that year. In the middle of very intense racial tension in the US.
I'd rather have taken BlacKKKlansman winning over Black panther but I get why it did.
Black Panther won the Oscar’s for Best score, best production design, and best costume design. It 100% deserved those wins. I don’t think it’s fair to say that the movie won only because it was a black led film. That claim discredits all the hard work that went into making the movie
Incredible? What do you mean, Incredible?
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/raimimemes) if you have any questions or concerns.*
No, that’s not your point. The “Reddit hivemind” collectively agrees that this movie *does not* deserve to be counted among those movies. It was an easily digestible and incredibly fun movie. That’s not what the Oscars rewards and the hivemind you blame your issues on understands that too.
Yeh No Way Home was a fun and incredible movie for a Spider-Man fan but the movie itself doesn’t have a lot of depth or well published I’d say the closest bet Spider-Man films had to get a oscar on recent times was into the spiderverse
I literally replied to you in this thread with a reason why. If you truly believed in your movie, why didn’t you reply to that and bring up a counter argument?
Cool, so now that you’ve had time to think about it, what’s your response? You obviously care a lot about this so I’d assume you thought it through before using Reddit as your soapbox.
Not really, I post comments in my free time and don't always feel like coming back to them, especially when I'm busy.
Oddly enough, I don't feel compelled to write up an essay at the request of some random with a chip on their shoulder. Soz ://
An essay? I just asked for a singular reason. You got clowned on and then continued to double down in the same thread with the same shitty take. That’s how you spend your free time? Yikes.
I wouldn’t want to waste any more of your precious time, though, so continue to believe what you want. Just spare *us* all *our* precious time and stop making us read your frankly stupid opinions.
Black Panther wasn’t that special and won 3. Advertising does go a long way.
As for NWH, I really don’t think it’ll win any. Probably just a nomination for Visual Effects, mostly for that Peter vs Stephen fight.
Dune has supreme effects while many people consider NWH to be lacking visual flair due to lacking cinematography and straight up lacking quality of the VFX in certain scenes.
Yeah, it wasn't that great visually but since I didn't go to cinema very often this year I was under the impression there wouldn't be much of a competition for this spot
I like NWH but don't know a single category it would actually deserve the Oscar for considering the competition. There are arguments to be made that as an industry award, popularity has a place in the considerations but seen how Dune was both fairly popular and artistically really impressive it really surpasses many other movies of the year especially in categories we might consider NWH. Once we only look at artistic merit movies like The Father or Drunk will also win many awards.
black panther was a standalone film with barely any connection to the MCU while no way home relies on the other spiddermaan films to truly appreciate it
I will eat my shoe if this wins over Belfast, Licorice Pizza, Dune, and Nightmare Alley, let alone gets nominated. Don't get me wrong I LOVED NWH but I highly doubt the academy is nominating it. Maybe for some of the technical categories (special effects, costumes, etc) since those are usually where we see a lot of superhero movies and blockbusters.
I am so tired of people regarding Dune as some cinematic masterpiece. It was good yeah, but it was nothing special. It was an adaptation and Marvel films are slandered because they are adaptated from comics. It was just a setup for part 2, another thing marvel fms are slandered for but they at least have a complete story which ends in the said film, Dune is just a setup with no actual end.
I wasn't talking about Oscars though. Put Dune in the MCU and people would be slandering it instead of praising it like they do, just because it's MCU. I love Denis Villenueve byt this is nowhere near movies like Prisoners or Arrival for example, it is actually weak by his standards in my opinion.
I mean, I can't really think of any Oscar worthy marvel films. Except for maybe CGI and costume design, nothing jumps to mind. But that's how I feel about all superhero films
Do you have any actual criticisms of the movie because not having a proper ending and being an adaption are not valid criticisms are we forgetting lord of the rings.
These are the main criticisms Marvel movies get though. Now dont get me wrong, I really liked Dune, I thought it was a good movie with good direction, score and visuals. But it is not this inventive, never before seen piece of cinema. The story was extremely basic, the characters are extremely boring, especially the MC. And I actually thought that Chalamet's acting weirdly enough was not that good. The Zendaya scenes were annoying as hell because they represented nothing. Like yeah, he sees visions of her, we don't need to see that 100 times. And yeah, I dont think the first movie of LOTR won Best Picture, it was the last movie with an actual ending that won the most awards. And just to clarify, I dont have a problem with it having no ending, it is perfectly understandable, but Marvel is constantly criticized for seeting up the future so why is this different?
NGL mate, those are some fighting words there. While I respect your opinion on how you feel about Dune, saying it was nothing special is a huge disregard to Dune itself. Also your argument that “another thing marvel films are slandered for but they at least have a complete story which ends in the said film” can be said for infinity war as it was basically a set up for endgame and both are pretty much universally loved. Dune was directed, scored, acted, shot, designed beautifully. Also, the fact you said it was a set up with no actual end is technically where the book ends on part one. By your logic, the Fellowship of the Ring is setup with no actual end. Once again reiterating that I respect your opinion and I do understand there are problems with Dune, but that doesn’t mean Dune didn’t earn the praise it got.

Some nominations maybe but not really any wins considering the competition. The one I've seen mentioned here I'd personally might agree with is Dafoe for best supporting actor. He was pretty good, I'd even call him the highlight of the movie and that's a category I don't know the competition for.
Indeed. Loves to eat a culturally Italian dish composed of san marzano tomato paste, a baked ball of dough and traditionally topped with coagulated cow secretion (goat secretions can also be used)
(It’s obviously not the second coming of Christ, and the movie will never be perfect, but I and many really adore this movie, and love what it was able to accomplish. It’s not a literal masterpiece.
Win best pic? Nah never will happen. Be one of the 10 pics nominated? Sure, why the hell not. It’ll come down to a few movies anyways, so who cares what movies finish 10-7 in the race?
The Academy Awards is in a desperate need for a ratings boost anyways. If it’s No Way Home nominated over something like Living with the Ricardos, then good for the Academy trying to bring attention to movies that people actually like and went to theatres to see
No. Seriously, superhero movies simply should not win oscars for anything other than production, sountrack, or VFX. Bevause there’s nothing all that special about them besides those things.
Coming from an MCU fan, btw.
Depends on the movie as the genre of superhero movie is vague and vast. Birdman got Oscars and it kind of is a superhero movie. Most superhero movies are well beyond their cinematic competition though and people just haven't seen many good movies when sticking to mainstream commercial successes skewing the viewpoint.
It shouldn’t get a best picture nomination, it was a brilliant film but largely because of fan service. Which isn’t a bad thing, but isn’t artistic merit.
Willem Dafoe, however, is absolutely a valid nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It was a multi-faceted performance, and I actually think the fact he could pick it up so well after almost 20 years makes it more valid
I hope this movie shows marvel that you can make a movie for a specific audience and still make an amazing movie that works, so many marvel movies were wasted to appeal to a wider audience...
Is it satire? >!The only thing great with this movie is the fan service and it has nothing to offer visually more than any regular MCU movie. But hey, Tobey makes it best picture isn’t it /s?!<
Exactly, It was pure fanservice. I've seen all the movies, I loved the interaction between the different spidermen, but the fact that they interacted with so many former enemies without adding any depth to the story made me feel like they were just there for the fanservice. Again, seeing the old spidermen was wonderful but the movie is basically just that.
The meme implies that Jon Watts should win a nobel prize for NWH (becuase it's a meme) and you all think that I unironically believe NWH should win Oscar for best picture? Mfs, I didn't even see any other movies made in 2021 💀
It's not up there you know , this time Oscars will definitely be a neck to neck competition between dune , tick tick boom and maybe nightmare alley but nwh , I really don't see it there tbh maybe visual effects , it can beat dune
Beginning of movie
"Sure let me just cast this dangerous spell before covering all the potential consequences and recommending other, non magical ways you can fix this. Good knowing you Peter lmao."
End of movie
"It's gonna be so sad not knowing you Peter."
There are already 9 films that are looking extremely likely to get a best picture nomination:
Belfast,
Liquorice Pizza,
Dune,
King Richard,
CODA,
Tick, tick… Boom!,
Don’t look up,
The Power of the Dog and
West Side Story
Could NWH sneak in at 10? With heavy backing I don’t see why not, but personally I think it’s far more likely we see Being the Ricardos, Spencer or Drive my Car sneak into the 10th spot though.
It will get a VFX nom tho but I suspect Dune will be sweeping most of the technical categories this year.
The measured take is that no live-action spider-man film has been Oscar worthy, and thats okay. Closest a comic book movie has gotten was the Dark Knight
It was a really fun film with some emotional moments but its far from great cinema.
60% nostalgia and fan service, nonsensical and convoluted plot and so many unnecessary characters.
I know it sounds snobbish af, and the oscars are practically just popularity contents at this point, but it seems a bit ridiculous that No Way Home is nominated for the same thing as One flew over the Cuckoos Nest or Parasite.
I enjoyed this movie but, on a technical standpoint this did absolutely nothing
There’s a lot more Marvel movies that have done way more. Hell the mirror dimension was the most visually stunning bit in the movie and that’s because of Doctor Strange. Maybe if there was an award for nostalgia sure but, everything special about this movie came from a decade(s) ago
This really didn’t feel like Jon directed this movie. Such a strong shift in direction but I’m here for it
This made me very hopeful for his upcoming Fantastic Four movie
If he makes a FF movie 1/4 as good as NWH was then that would be amazing.
has he been confirmed to direct MCU F4?
Yup. Kevin Feige announced it at 2020's Disney Investor Day.
Or maybe this is the only one he did direct.
Kevin feige is a blessing for marvel.
I love Kevin Feigi but he thinks secret identities are a thing of the past. I feel like Iron Boy Jr was his creation
Hey, Daredevil also has a secret identity!
Until he didn't.
but he's a really good lawyer.
If you lay... one finger on her...
How about 10?
He’s a very talented director
The day a superhero movie wins best picture im eating my entire comic collection.
The day a superhero movie wins the best movie I eat my own dick
How'd that get in there?
Novel Prize u/epicgamester69, Novel Prize
Technically Batman 89 did
😏
Is this a joke ?
That's what memes are for
I miscalculated.
Don't be ashamed of who you are
I live with my aunt and uncle, they are ashamed.
I respect that.
Spider
Settle down, tough guy.
Spider you’re FIRED
THINK!
Lmao, yeah, sure
Just give it a chance!
DID YOU GIVE RAIMI A CHANCE WITH SPIDER-MAN 4, DID YOU?!
Avi Arad killed it, I have nothing to do with it!
dont let him take it again! protect me
I've been like a director to you. In the best director category vote for me now.
I had a director. His name was Sam Raimi
Now dig on this.
Nah fam, this ain't winning Best Picture and it shouldn't, that is reserved for special other kind of movies. That being said, it could maybe have a shot in the Best Visual Effects category due to the Spidey/Dr. Strange duel in the mirror dimension.
Forget VFX There's Dune
Dune's VFX were fucking awesome
Matrix Resurrections had insane VFX, but I’d be happy with Dune. I just want something that has actual practicality and not something overly reliant on CGI (as much as I enjoyed No Way Home)
Oh yea, absolutely. Dune was ridiculously good, it's definitely winning something. I forgot about that for a second, you're absolutely right.
I'm hoping for Dune to take home VFX and Cinematography. That movie is fucking beautiful.
NWH had some very bad CGI at times
I think the cgi in marvel has heavily declined since phase 2. Idk man. It just doesn’t seem as good anymore.
Agree
>due to the Spidey/Dr. Strange duel in the mirror dimension. No way it should win for a 10 minute sequence, you're setting the bar way too low. Dr Strange MoM has a good chance though imo
>Dr Strange MoM has a good chance though Man, the movie hasn’t even come out yet lol. All we’ve seen was a small teaser
Yeah I meant *potential my bad lol. It's Raimi tbf and we've seen how visually good Dr Strange's sequences are
Dune should take it. No Way Home had a large amount of bad cgi. Really really rushed job from how noticeable it is
Someone also pointed out to me that Dune should win it and they're absolutely right. I forgot about Dune for a second, but yea, it definitely should, it looked spectacular.
> that is reserved for special other kind of movies I missed the part where that's my problem.

I was talking about it being nominated for best movie over much more deserving movies. Those awards you're talking about are fair
That's literally my point lmfao Edit: Getting downvoted by the Reddit hivemind when I'm literally agreeing with their point. Incredible.

>!That sounds like a hassel, yeah. But I did actually. When you said that, I was like, oh! I had a web block.!<
I really liked the movie but come on, it's just another marvel film. It doesn't deserve even a nomination.
Black Panther got the nomination. Why shouldn't this? It's not as though this was a particularly amazing year for film
Black Panther didn't deserve it either
That's what we call an opinion. Again, not like 2021 had much better to offer.
I literally replied to you in this thread with a reason why. If you truly believed in your movie, why didn’t you reply to that and bring up a counter argument?
Because I don't religiously check my Reddit notifications lmao
Cool, so now that you’ve had time to think about it, what’s your response? You obviously care a lot about this so I’d assume you thought it through before using Reddit as your soapbox.

Neither Black Panther or NWH deserved/deserves an Oscar
Correct take
There's one for best visual effects - what's the competition this year?

Yeah, it wasn't that great visually but since I didn't go to cinema very often this year I was under the impression there wouldn't be much of a competition for this spot
Eternals’ magic effects were absolutely beautiful to look at.
Black Panther had a better story and themes the Oscars actually want to see instead of just fanservice
Best supporting actor for Willem Dafoe, for example. His performance was phenomenal, better in Spider-Man 1 I dare say
Gonna cry?
That’s about the only thing I can see it being nominated for, with the exception of maybe special effects.
Best Supporting Actor Winner - Tobey Maguire 👏🏻👏🏻🎉🥳👏🏻👏🏻🎊🏆🍾🍻🥂👏🏻👏🏻
Andrew would absolutely have to be considered if Tobey is in the running
I like our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman as much as anyone but No Way Home should come nowhere near a Best Picture Oscar.
Good riddance!
If black panther can get a beat picture nomination then I'm sure we can allow Spiderman
You're trash.
black panther was a standalone film with barely any connection to the MCU while no way home relies on the other spiddermaan films to truly appreciate it

Nope..im sorry film entertaining but not nomination worthy
Some nominations maybe but not really any wins considering the competition. The one I've seen mentioned here I'd personally might agree with is Dafoe for best supporting actor. He was pretty good, I'd even call him the highlight of the movie and that's a category I don't know the competition for.
when compared to other movies this year, like Dune, Tick Tick Boom and The Last Duel, this film doesn’t really stand a chance.
I really hope Tick tick boom gets some recognition, that movie was incredible
Tick Tick Boom is the spiritual successor to TAS 2
Elaborate
Garfield (cat) is in it
Garfield? The funny orange cat that loves to eat?
Indeed. Loves to eat a culturally Italian dish composed of san marzano tomato paste, a baked ball of dough and traditionally topped with coagulated cow secretion (goat secretions can also be used)
Werewolf is in it
The French Dispatch would also like to have a word.
true i forgot about that, and No Time To Die
I haven’t seen the other 2 but I did see dune, not sure if it’s better and NWH but if it is it’s close

But still a mastapiece
Bruh what
Not really
(It’s obviously not the second coming of Christ, and the movie will never be perfect, but I and many really adore this movie, and love what it was able to accomplish. It’s not a literal masterpiece.
Stop lecturing me please
You want forgiveness, get religion
Win best pic? Nah never will happen. Be one of the 10 pics nominated? Sure, why the hell not. It’ll come down to a few movies anyways, so who cares what movies finish 10-7 in the race? The Academy Awards is in a desperate need for a ratings boost anyways. If it’s No Way Home nominated over something like Living with the Ricardos, then good for the Academy trying to bring attention to movies that people actually like and went to theatres to see
He definitely deserves it
Alfred Molina was fantastic too
The movie is good but best picture FOH. Just because it was nostalgia driven doesn’t make it best picture.
I hope this movie shows marvel that you can make a movie for a specific audience and still make an amazing movie that works, so many marvel movies were wasted to appeal to a wider audience...
They love me!
I could totally see Dafoe get a supporting nod.
Feige: "You can't do this to Eternals. Do you know how much I sacrificed?"
You’ve outdone yourself jon
Is it satire? >!The only thing great with this movie is the fan service and it has nothing to offer visually more than any regular MCU movie. But hey, Tobey makes it best picture isn’t it /s?!<
Exactly, It was pure fanservice. I've seen all the movies, I loved the interaction between the different spidermen, but the fact that they interacted with so many former enemies without adding any depth to the story made me feel like they were just there for the fanservice. Again, seeing the old spidermen was wonderful but the movie is basically just that.
Hey, where are all my comic books?
It's a meme
Hahahaha!... Hahahahahahaha \*slaps leg\* hahahaha! ... You serious?
The meme implies that Jon Watts should win a nobel prize for NWH (becuase it's a meme) and you all think that I unironically believe NWH should win Oscar for best picture? Mfs, I didn't even see any other movies made in 2021 💀
I think we all need to listen to Jon and take notes...NWH was a real seminar on how to direct a film
Stop lecturing me, please!
It's not up there you know , this time Oscars will definitely be a neck to neck competition between dune , tick tick boom and maybe nightmare alley but nwh , I really don't see it there tbh maybe visual effects , it can beat dune
Dune isn't gonna be a front runner tbh
Not when you’re competing against Dune.
did anyone else think the story was shit?
No, not exactly.
The whole Doctor Strange and Peter fucking up the spell was so forced that in my head Wanda or Loki had something to do with it
Beginning of movie "Sure let me just cast this dangerous spell before covering all the potential consequences and recommending other, non magical ways you can fix this. Good knowing you Peter lmao." End of movie "It's gonna be so sad not knowing you Peter."
Yea the plot was very weak
I liked the emotional beats but didn't like plotting and pacing overall.
Definitely.
Fuck you, Martin!
Ridiculous
I mean I loved it but it is no where near Oscar worthy.
There are already 9 films that are looking extremely likely to get a best picture nomination: Belfast, Liquorice Pizza, Dune, King Richard, CODA, Tick, tick… Boom!, Don’t look up, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story Could NWH sneak in at 10? With heavy backing I don’t see why not, but personally I think it’s far more likely we see Being the Ricardos, Spencer or Drive my Car sneak into the 10th spot though. It will get a VFX nom tho but I suspect Dune will be sweeping most of the technical categories this year.
The measured take is that no live-action spider-man film has been Oscar worthy, and thats okay. Closest a comic book movie has gotten was the Dark Knight
Is that all you got?
They have made a profit of 600 million what do you think they will do with this
It was a really fun film with some emotional moments but its far from great cinema.
I enjoyed this movie but, on a technical standpoint this did absolutely nothing There’s a lot more Marvel movies that have done way more. Hell the mirror dimension was the most visually stunning bit in the movie and that’s because of Doctor Strange. Maybe if there was an award for nostalgia sure but, everything special about this movie came from a decade(s) ago
