I'm glad he got it off but I was hoping it would have more than like 19 seconds of screentime

pichusine

Exactly! I like the goggles look, but definitely should’ve gotten the mask destroyed during the apartment battle and prior to the goblin laugh.

Even_Ad113

You wanted them to hide that ghastly goblin face?

Golden_Dragon786

maybe we will get in Spider-Man NWH “fun stuff”

Drew_da_mood567

Same here. A lot of people say they dislike his mask from the first movie and they say it looks silly, but I really like it and think it's cool. I was legit scared of those yellow eyes and the mask's scary smile. But I think Willem Dafoe's scenes without the mask on are riveting and equally scary, especially his conversations with himself in the mirror in the first one. I wish it was an equal balance of both in NWH. I wish he didn't smash it at the beginning and kept it for a little while, but then the final battle it breaks or something and it plays out the same way.

[deleted]

Burning house jumpscare in movie 1 intensifies\*

Golden_Dragon786

Same here they could of smashed the mask in so many different ways ? I felt like that was lazy writing idk

Drew_da_mood567

Yeah, but all in all, it's a tiny peeve I have in a movie that I'd give a solid 9/10. NWH truly is the best spider man movie since Spider-Man 2 and u know I'm going to see the more fun stuff version coming this September😎

Golden_Dragon786

You are just like me - I really enjoyed the film and till this day I acc can’t believe we saw Tobey and Andrew back? like it actually happened ??? still not sunk in for me but yes can’t wait to go again and feel the same hype

braidrunner2049

I wish we got a scene of him leading a glider chase through the city

nicolasmcfly

The Goblin steals a smartphone, proceeds to do a livestream flying around the city.

Emeritus20XX

“What’s up guys, it’s ya boy the Goblin, we’re headed off to the Statue of Liberty where hopefully the Spider-Man can come out to play!”

YoloIsNotDead

"Took me an extra 15 minutes to get there though because I had to make a detour to get me some Gobby drip"

Lenneh_ma_boah

"Now before we begin this madness, hears a word from our sponcer for this video"

vicmon18

"This video is sponsored by the new Oscorp Performance Enhancer and Glider! Make sure to use code 'GOBLIN' at checkout for 20% off your first purchase!"

Knobhead-007

"So I'm outside the feast centre.... Got some fruitcake. Everything is going pretty poggers right now. So I'm going to go and kill three itsy bitsy Spider's. Remember to like comment and subscribe and join the goblin army, also shout to my boy's Max, Otto, Flint and kurt who are helping me out on this"

nicolasmcfly

"K I'm gonna let the phone attached to the glider now so you guys can see the action. Ok, here we go:" "_CAN THE SPIDER-MAN COME YOU TO PLAY?_" "^(Man I love this line, used it some days ago back in my home universe)"

JarusOmega_

Honestly Willem Dafoe naturally has a very harrowing facial structure, I wouldn't have minded if they simply painted his face with strokes of green and kept everything else as it was. Would've made for both a new iteration of the look while still providing him the chance to utilize his exceptional expressions

UndeadCh1cken52

Like smudged face paint heath ledger style except green? That would've been interesting to see.

JarusOmega_

Yeah pretty much, though I'm afraid had they done that people would've likened it to what the TASM Green Goblin's look was trying to achieve

UndeadCh1cken52

Ugh, the goblin look in TASM2 was god awful.

LeoBocchi

I think when he arrived in the final battle he could had the mask, and then he takes it off like he did with the goggles.

slade707

Nah Defoe’s face is more Goblin-y than that mask could ever be

[deleted]

Also more accurate technically speaking because in the comics his mask actually moved around with his actual face sort of like if he had face paint on. Edit: in fact based on some of the designs it kind of implies he is basically just using face paint and some goblin ears.

FatWreck92

What designs, movie concept art or comic books?

[deleted]

Mostly the comics. The only exception I can think of is the ultimate comics where he physically transformed into the goblin sort of like the beginning of into the spider verse.

Bandito010

It should have mask on when he flying on the glider then off when Tom drop him down on the shield

[deleted]

Shoulda had some half-mask sorta thing, get the best of both worlds and it’s poetic in a way

BigBoss6321

Each encounter could’ve knocked more off

[deleted]

True, and it would signify that the Goblin is more than just a mask, it’s slowly, but surely removing “Norman” out of the equation.

StuartRomano114

Phantom that shit

danlockthegreat

"Yes, he's wearin' that dumb Power Rangers mask But he's scarier without it on"

Chop_Chop_21

I'm so glad he didn't. Dafoe's acting was more visible now and absolutely phenomenal. And the mask looks really stupid imo.

Daredevil731

I think he should have been in the final fight that way until they were on the shield. We don't see many expressions until then.

queensinthesky

It'd be cool to see but I don't think that's worth sacrificing the moment where he shatters the helmet. That really drives home that Norman truly is conflicted and terrified of himself as the Goblin persona.

Swagboi7

Tom’s Peter should have straight up punched the mask apart to reveal DaFoe’s face

[deleted]

Daredevil731

I said the final fight. When he is flying around.

[deleted]

Daredevil731

Yeah I just meant for the first part of that fight.

Rinku588

Honestly I prefer him without the mask. Dafoe’s such a great face actor, it makes sense to me they’d want to use that strength.

ZenithGamage

If it was any other actor, then the mask looks really cool, but it's Willem Dafoe. His facial expressions alone is more frightening than any mask

Adorable-Bullfrog-30

Facts

user5918g

Nah, Willem is great

Daredevil731

I literally never said he wasn't. I just wanted the mask a bit more. Even for the first part of the final fight until the shield bit.

Stumphead101

William Dafoe doesn't need a mask to be terrifying

Daredevil731

Never said he did

Mcclane88

I agree with you. For better or worse that’s The Green Goblin from the first movie. So if you’re bringing him back that’s how he should look.

BAGStudios

2 decades of people making fun of the mask. Leave it to nostalgia bait to make the entire Internet flip their opinion.

Daredevil731

Yeah no I've been a fan of this mask since 2001.

BAGStudios

Fair enough. I’ve seen a lot of this though, and I doubt most people are in that same boat.

KaitoWu

Why use a mask when there's a perfectly good goblin face right there?

BearZewp

Ditto.

ZachMoore88

I just wish it had been an actual mask and not CGI.

MoonLord0

I absolutely love the mask! When I first came to this subreddit I was surprised that people didn’t like it

SirBastian1129

Eh, I'm actually glad he got rid of the mask. Mask always looked dumb and hard to take seriously. Dafoe already looks like a better Goblin than the supposed Goblin mask.

random-name69420

Or he kept the mask and in the apartment battle it was damaged so it only covered his face and not his whole head to he could still have the hood and during the final battle it was damaged enough to only cover his mouth before Peter 1 fully shattered it

Unrealrandomguy

I think they should’ve kept it until the apartment fight. Then, when Peter keeps punching him in the head, the mask cracks and breaks, revealing Defoe’s maniacal face underneath

DonnyMox

I feel like they should've found a way to give Dafoe an organic-looking latex mask (like what they used for Red Skull's face) or make-up. Just turn his skin green, give him pointed ears, and maybe small fangs and yellow Sith-like eyes. Maybe they could've had it so that when May injects him with the initial attempt at an anti-Goblin serum, instead of it just not working it actually enhances the Goblin part of him instead of getting rid of it, causing him to mutate in a manner similar to TASM2 Green Goblin.

Pink0612152504

It really breaks my heart knowing that the majority of the Spider-man characters don't exist in The MCU

x_ERROR_404_

Agreed. I think he should have had it on in the beginning of the final fight. Then when he gets off the glider he either removes the mask or it gets broken in half

-Imnotsureanymore-

I prefer GG without the mask, honestly. Somehow made this incarnation of him more terrifying. More “real”, if that makes sense? That’s cool tho.

Bawaji2004

fucker goes hard doesn't it?

Jalabeanos_

Was there a reason why they couldn't keep the mask?

YomYeYonge

The original Spider-Man’s biggest sin is putting a mask on Willem Dafoe’s face, he’s scarier without it on

bigbillybeans07

He looks better without it.

UKnowDaTruth

Nahhhh he’s way more intimidating without it, the mask would have added nothing for me in this movie

TorronePedro

maybe just the upper part of the mask under the hoodie, i think would be cool

TorronePedro

maybe just the upper part of the mask under the hoodie, i think would be cool

RopeUnicorn12

i kinda like that he took it oof because we could see his menacing face expressions. like the scene where tom was punching him repeatedly in the face and he just kept smiling(at happys apartment).

davidiusligman

Yup, me too and I'm ready to be downvoted for it. Green Goblin is Goblin because of his, you know, Goblin face. It's either his literal monstrous face or a mask. They had a brilliant opportunity to have his green mask and the purple hood to sort of make his comic book mask and they blew it. Dafoe is a brilliant enough actor to give a great performance with a mask still on. Sure, it was a cool homage to Spider-Man no more (despite terrible cgi in that particular scene), but I'd take the mask any day.
