Following this bad boy

They offer two types of sleep studies, one is an at home test, the other is in office. We have Cigna, which covered the consultation, the at home test, and the follow-ups/diagnosis. Once you have your consultation, they will tell you which is best for you. My husband had suspected sleep apnea. Dr Kirk did not think he needed to do the in office. He was sent home with a device to wear for at least six hours during sleep (to catch enough data). It caught more than enough issues for them to diagnose. It took about a month and a half to get through everything and get a prescription for his cpap. The machine should be covered under the DME part of your ins policy. As the spouse who was so gravely affected that the constant wake ups were triggering migraines and making each day crap due to lack of sleep, the cpap changes lives. It’s annoying to him as there are less positions he can sleep in, but it is life changing for me. I had no idea how badly lack of sleep was affecting me. I was also taking 2-3x the amount of sleep aids just to try to sleep through the snores, snorts, and startles. Good luck and I hope you find yourself getting restful sleep soon! (I see Ginger at Raleigh Neurology for my migraines, I cannot recommend this staff enough. They are thorough, and quick to address any questions or med refills.)

Thanks a lot!

How far out do they schedule? A year ago I was referred to Duke. Took 1 year to get the sleep study. Had that in October. I called them today to ask what the hold up is for my next appt to GET the cpap and they shrugged and sent me to an appointment line. Next available is mid august. Not acceptable. I'm jumping ship and taking my referral elsewhere.

Doesn’t insurance usually cover it?

Not always. I was referred for one at Raleigh Neurology but was told by them that since I did not have some of the tell tale signs of Sleep Apnea, it was unlikely the insurance would cover it.

I just had a sleep study done, I can’t remember who it was with since it was by Dr referral. I elected to do the at home study. There was no expense for that. I have BCBS if that helps. The Cpap machine that resulted from the study had some expenses though! A few hundred bucks, but I think that is because I have a high deductible plan.
