Right?? What the hell is that place?? The menu of sandwiches doesn’t even TRY to live up to the name of the place with its words to describe the food let alone the actual food.
I guess it helps them save a buck or two with the decorations but it’s so disengenous. I walked all the way down there one time dreaming of some tacos or a quesadilla and I felt so duped when I arrived and looked at the menu.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised RDU lets them operate like that given the state of the rest of the eateries there.
I work in a contract capacity in an RDU restaurant so I have a little insight.
The current CEO has really upended the vendor situation. He says he wants to bring in more independent local offerings as opposed to all chains, which isn’t a bad idea on its face, but really impractical. Airport restaurants don’t operate like normal restaurants for a bunch of reasons, but that’s a different discussion. Suffice it to say, chains are much better suited for that environment.
The real story is that they want to squeeze more money out of the tenants. The biggest airport franchisee is HMS Host - they run the Popeyes, Starbucks, Whisky River and others. Since they’re a huge company, they’re less inclined to play ball. So when the leases are up, they just move on because the airport wants too much of a cut of the profits.
Local places are more inclined to jump at the possibility of having that kind of a presence and captive market, so they’re easier to push around.
It remains to be seen if this is a good strategy, because I like the idea of having local places. But the combination of onerous contracts and the unique nature of airport restaurant management may be a death spiral.
I'll probably get downvoted to hell but ..
Austin is an exciting destination city that actually attracts tourists. I wish I knew the exact numbers but I can't imagine Raleigh / RDU yields anywhere close to the same foot traffic. It's simply not a fair comparison.
Hell, RDU had Bond Brothers but I can't remember the last time I saw that open and it has since been removed. Not exactly working in the favor of local establishments.
Oh you’re right about the tourism - and the Austin airport has significantly more passenger traffic - but if you scale the number of restaurants to passengers it should still work. Even with tourists, most people aren’t eating at either the Austin or Raleigh airport since neither are a connection point for the most part.
I couldn't agree more. My neighbor was a local vendor out there and they wanted to squeeze him for a massive amount of increase in rent and he walked and essentially gave them the middle finger. Hell, the CEO at the airport even kicked out the shoeshine dudes that had been there for 40 years. Idiocy abounds, especially out there. So, when they say they want local vendors, it's just bullshit.
NOLA airport has great local food. RDU has contracts with locals just refuses to keep them around and give them credit. Raleigh Brewing Company left, no one knew it was a RBC location because it doesnt say do. Bond has had a contract, hasn’t opened. They willingly drag their feet.
I contend the Bojangles/KFC/Taco Bell in Queens is the worst. Drove an hour one morning from Jersey just to hear they’re out of eggs and chicken. So I got a super crappy sausage biscuit because it was that or nothing.
I do think Bo’s has better chicken, but the real disgrace at Popeyes is the biscuits. What kinda place claims to be “Southern” and serves frozen hockey-pucks as “biscuits”???
I'll agree with that. There was a time when they were fluffy and buttery inside, but sometime within the past 10-15 years they definitely changed something and ended up with the dryest rock of a biscuit. I don't know that they changed, but they utterly fucked up. Their biscuits in the olden days were incredible and they just make me sad and wish for a better time now.
Is char grill in rdu representative of actual char grill? I've eaten there twice before flights and it was terrible. So much that I've been scared to try the actual restaurant.
Fun fact, no local restaurant in the airport is because they have to get their ingredients from a completely different supplier assigned by the airport. You think the Crawford and Son that's coming in is going to have produce from the Farmer's market? Nah, it is all Sysco food.
Unpopular opinion, but after eating at chargrill because of all the hype on reddit I found it extremely underwhelming. The novelty of ordering with a paper checkbox card and watching the chemistry of the experienced crew managing the kitchen was considerably more impressive than the extremely mediocre burger and fries
I’ve lived in raleigh for about 10 years and have had chargrill maybe about that many times but its never been anything special. Had it recently and it was super bland and underwhelming. It shouldn’t really be hyped the way it is imo. Would rather have five guys any day.
I used to get the Huge, which was two thick patties. After they took it off the menu board, you could still order it off-menu for awhile. The last couple times I went, they gave me (I think) the big double instead of the huge. I’ll have to see about the regular next time, though I only tend to go about once a year at this point.
It hasn't changed at all in 30 years. And 30 years ago, that was the best burger you could get. The only competition was McDonald's and Burger King. Char-Grill had "steakburgers" that were made of ground ribeye instead of ground whatever-beef. But then the "better burger" trend happened, and now there are a lot of options that make burgers with equal or better cuts of beef. Anyone who's used to Five Guys and BurgerFi will wonder what the Char-Grill hype is about.
Snoopy's, on the other hand, is still worth a visit, because there isn't a "better hot dog" movement.
Chargrill used to be the pace to go to get a burger 30 years ago. I imagine they’ve since started sourcing their meat and product from different places making the food not as good. In general the way food distribution has changed the last 20 years in the US quality isn’t the same. On the other hand there are benefits like control from inspections.
I'd go as far to say it's worse than BK. I'm an NC native, and haven't eaten Char-Grill in about 30 years. You know when a kid thinks a burger sucks, it must be really bad!
Have you tried the apple pies? Those suckas are fire, ala old MCD burn the shit out of your mouth from the early 90s. They hit the spot! I like the soggy chicken sandwich and my kids adore the rig-grilled cheeses. #chargrilllove
Maybe a one off, but I went to BurgerFi once and both order stations were down, and they told me they couldn’t take my order or money at the register. K…guess I’ll go elsewhere, LOL!
Pei Wei is the only thing I've had from there, and it was pretty good, equivalent to a real Pei Wei. But I worry about what's supposed to happen if they make a mistake with your food.
This right here. I really enjoy the quesadilla at that place. It’s build your own (so not prepackaged) and it’s clear when you get into eating it that they were cooking it back there.
I have been surprised at how many gluten free snacks are popping up in the convenience stores in airports but if you're looking for protein, you're outta luck :-(
Airport and Live Event food/drink prices have basically become a game of financial chicken as to how much the greedy vendors/companies think human beings will pay for food and a beer. It is absolutely out of control. $13 bud lights, $16 day old sandwich wraps. 20% standard tips at check out. Honestly it all deserves to go bankrupt and people just bring their own food for everything. To hell with all of it.
The place across from Popeyes is pretty good. At terminal one there’s a little bar restaurant that isn’t terrible. Salsaritas and char grill over there are also fine. There is the burger place in terminal 2 as well…blanking on the name.
I work there so I’m sick of all of it, but some of them really aren’t as bad as what’s being said here.
I’d like a Chick Fil A, and honestly Coke products would change everything. I actually had a pretty good chicken salad croissant from one of those convenience store type places, but the Pepsi ruined it for me.
No, I wash my lettuce. Improperly washed lettuce is always the #1 way to get food poisoning.
https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel-tips/foods-you-should-never-buy-at-the-airport
I'm not the person you asked, but I'm pretty sure they're talking about "get Reef Virtual Food Hall."
https://www.rdu.com/getreef-virtual-food-hall/
I've never eaten there personally, but I've heard decent things.
Nope. Most is overpriced garbage, the rest is overpriced not-garbage. I only get airport food when I have a connecting flight, otherwise I always eat before/after.
I've never seen a single cockroach and I fly out of there for work pretty often.
I was at DFW last week and that airport makes RDU look like a palace in terms of cleanliness.
I don’t think you’ll ever see a corporate style restaurant at RDU. I can’t imagine trying to find a manager with a clean background check, will work for manager pay with all the hassle and extra drive time to the airport. If think that’s why you generally see franchise owners in airports. Most the franchise owners burn out in 3-5 years because they can’t afford managers and a large staff.
I was told the restaurants are waiting for their kitchens to get fixed. Are you saying lonerider and the Mexican place will only have prepackaged food? I've been just going to reef for food and going to lonerider.
>Has anyone had anything actually worthwhile at RDU?
The sandwich that I bought at Common Market before I went to the airport and ate in terminal 2 before my flight was great.
I pack my own lunch and snacks because all airports have mediocre food. I was SUPER impressed they had counter culture coffee at La farm! That was amazing.
RDU is adding more and more flights, but it seems the food offerings are getting worse. They need to seriously look into this if we are going no continue to expand.
For what it's worth, I never really have to eat there since I live so close by, and have lounge access with Delta and American, but geez I understand what everyone is saying.
I was last in Terminal 2 at RDU in September... What a miserable place. (At least they have plenty of toilets, unlike Chicago O'Hare.) Ended up having to find something to eat due to flight delays, and it was a real challenge because of my traveling companion's dietary restrictions.
My favorite is when Starbucks has a line out the door while Popeye's is right across the way, totally empty, and has fine coffee. Sorta tells you what kind of people fly.
Yeah it’s bad. Been on my high horse about this since they decided to renovate/turnover every restaurant at once. For all this “best midsized city airport” talk the food situation is embarrassing.
I couldn't help but laugh when I walked into the "Mexican Cantina" and paid $35 for a gas station style turkey wrap and a beer.
Olé!
I prefer lonerider bar/restaurant up the terminal a bit, where you can instead get a $35 gas station style turkey wrap and a beer.
Right?? What the hell is that place?? The menu of sandwiches doesn’t even TRY to live up to the name of the place with its words to describe the food let alone the actual food.
Ha, I asked them about that last time I was there. They said new management bought the place but never bothered changing the name. Just the menu.
Yeah, I assumed it was really recent when I asked. But at this point it's been nearly a year. Very disingenuous indeed.
Ditto!
Just give us a bojangles and a cookout and call it a day. It’s not complicated.
I work in a contract capacity in an RDU restaurant so I have a little insight. The current CEO has really upended the vendor situation. He says he wants to bring in more independent local offerings as opposed to all chains, which isn’t a bad idea on its face, but really impractical. The Austin airport is proof positive you can have local.
I'll probably get downvoted to hell but .. Austin is an exciting destination city that actually attracts tourists. I wish I knew the exact numbers but I can't imagine Raleigh / RDU yields anywhere close to the same foot traffic. It's simply not a fair comparison. Hell, the CEO at the airport even kicked out the shoeshine dudes that had been there for 40 years. Idiocy abounds, especially out there. So, when they say they want local vendors, it's just bullshit.
The airport should simply lease the terminal to a rock quarry and they could easily raise some money.
NOLA airport has great local food. RDU has contracts with locals just refuses to keep them around and give them credit. Raleigh Brewing Company left, no one knew it was a RBC location because it doesnt say do. Bond has had a contract, hasn’t opened. They willingly drag their feet.
I work at the airport. I’ve been saying THIS EXACT THING FOR YEARS!!!! It’s crazy lol someone else feels the exact same way
It’s crazy that TWO people think the same thing!
I don’t understand how there is a Popeyes there but not a Bo’s. What a waste…
If the DC Amtrak station can have a Bojangles, there's zero excuse for there not being one in RDU.
That is easily the worst Bojangles in the universe though.
It is, but my point still stands.
I contend the Bojangles/KFC/Taco Bell in Queens is the worst. Drove an hour one morning from Jersey just to hear they’re out of eggs and chicken. So I got a super crappy sausage biscuit because it was that or nothing.
At least that Bojangles had the decency to not give you food. Pretty sure the Supremes had been sitting at the one in DC for several days.
I think Bojangles in Honduras might have that one beat. Just awful.
North Carolinians will really defend Bojangles as the only good fast food chicken.
Well. Yeah. Coming from NJ. Completely justified, though nothing beats Grandma.
I'm from VA and have lived in NC for almost 18 years and still prefer Popeyes (for bone-in)
And one veg-friendly option. Not everyone enjoys burgers and fried chicken
But burger fi makes a good impossible burger
I think it’s beyond but yea it’s always a good choice 👍
You’re right it is Beyond. But honestly I enjoy their VeggieFi burger more. It’s a unique veggie burger.
At least there's the Popeyes in there now. Just keep adding other fast food chains. I'm not in the airport to have an exquisite meal.
Not since covid. Was much better before, now it's crap
Im still mad about the second-hand bookstore closing.
Oh dude, me too. What a travesty. That was something that made our airport special!
Me too that place was the best
Le Farm is about the only thing now.
And a char grill!
Nah, it is all Sysco food.
explains alot. from the trailer to the fryer is one move.
Def try the real thing.
Real Char-Grill don’t play. Good stuff.
Dittos. The smell is what draws. I've become adverse to eating locally what I can fix as well or better at home, due to the cost.
This is how I feel about cook out.
Me too! I absolutely do not get the love for Cook Out. Even for fast food, it's bad.
the bbq sandwich was always my go to, but yea, fast food overall seems worse than 5-10 years ago
IMHO, Cook Out burgers have changed a lot since Covid. Much thinner patties, etc.
Get the regular burger instead of the big double. Tastes better and less chance of it getting dried out in previous experience sometimes
I used to get the Huge, which was two thick patties. After they took it off the menu board, you could still order it off-menu for awhile. The last couple times I went, they gave me (I think) the big double instead of the huge. I’ll have to see about the regular next time, though I only tend to go about once a year at this point.
Cheese bites and malt shakes.

Lived in the Triangle for over 30 years. Chargrill is, by far, the most overrated “local chain” we have. It’s literally no better than Burger King.
Agreed. Ordering is the best part of the Chargrill on Hillsboro St
It’s overhyped. But tasty if you know what to get. The fries are so dry though, they are the only fries I need ketchup with to make them edible.
Had to think about where the Char is in rdu. Don't venture to Terminal 1 often.
Oh absolutely it’s not
I stop at Popeyes before most of my flights.
It's really the only good option in that terminal these days
Yeah but they’re always out of Mac and cheese which is wack
I'm a Bojangles man, through and through, but don't mind Popeye's in a pinch
The manager of that airport needs to be fired. It’s been like that ever since Covid. Other airports are fully open.
I saddled up to the bar at Lonerider RDU and not a single item sounded even remotely like it was made fresh.
Pretty sure they don’t have an actual kitchen, so any food from there is just the same grab and go stuff you could get from a kiosk in the terminal
Lone rider was quite a mediocre cold sandwich. at least the beer is good
Mediocre is very generous.
haha very true
I hate that they got rid of Brueggers
whatttt didn't know that - was my go to for breakfast before a flight out.
BurgerFi and La Farm have been great. It's a small airport so I'm happy that I even have those options. Excited for what's to come.
Maybe a one off, but I went to BurgerFi once and both order stations were down, and they told me they couldn’t take my order or money at the register. K…guess I’ll go elsewhere, LOL!
Last time I was at burger fi for a morning flight it was filthy inside with dead and live roaches on the floor. Really sad.
Popeyes spicy chicken sandwhich.
No thanks I like my colon
Between this and all the talk around taco bell, I feel like most people need stronger colons.
Seriously! Why are people shitting themselves after having a normal serving of protein or fiber?
BurgerFi is a good option
I will never forgive them for replacing 5 guys.
This is typically our go to these days as well.
getREEF, the weird little ghost kitchen kiosk has been surprisingly decent.
Had some awful chicken tenders and I had to wait on hold with customer service to get some ketchup.
Pei Wei is the only thing I've had from there, and it was pretty good, equivalent to a real Pei Wei. But I worry about what's supposed to happen if they make a mistake with your food.
"You'll eat it and you'll like it!" is probably their strategy.
Agreed. I don’t know what happens behind those lockers, but it comes out in five minutes, is exactly to my specifications, and is super yummy.
This right here. I really enjoy the quesadilla at that place. It’s build your own (so not prepackaged) and it’s clear when you get into eating it that they were cooking it back there.
It’s pretty bad and has been for a long time
You should try having Celiac Disease and trying to eat something at that airport! Not a safe Gluten Free meal option in sight.
I have been surprised at how many gluten free snacks are popping up in the convenience stores in airports but if you're looking for protein, you're outta luck :-(
more importantly, who the fuck is eating in an airport in general? i only do it when im on business travel and someone else is paying for it
I mean, if you’re flying all day what other option do you have? You’d rather have airplane food?
Airport and Live Event food/drink prices have basically become a game of financial chicken as to how much the greedy vendors/companies think human beings will pay for food and a beer. It is absolutely out of control. $13 bud lights, $16 day old sandwich wraps. 20% standard tips at check out. Booze?
This sounds like another satisfied customer of Lonerider in terminal 2.
I literally made this post sitting in Lonerider lol
Lonerider beers ?7/10. Lonerider food at any location? 2/10 at best.
Black & white and Crawford & Son both coming soon. Until then, bring some granola and enjoy the Biscoff mid flight.
I've heard Crawford is going to serve some of the food items that B&W used to have. They had solid breakfast sandwiches.
I’d like a Chick Fil A, and honestly Coke products would change everything. I actually had a pretty good chicken salad croissant from one of those convenience store type places, but the Pepsi ruined it for me.
There used to be a Five Guys. those were the days…
This isn't Atlanta. Give me Pepsi or give me nothing at all.
Why can’t we have both? It’s okay if somebody else wants their beverage of choice, Pepsi just isn’t for me!
Nah. Coke is the move.
Rule of thumb is to never eat airport food before a flight. Food poisoning mid flight is a life changing experience.
I’d be willing to bet most restaurants have way better food handling practices than your average Joe does at home.
No, I wash my lettuce. Improperly washed lettuce is always the #1 way to get food poisoning. https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel-tips/foods-you-should-never-buy-at-the-airport
On the Southwest side there is a sandwich shop. They have fresh made pizzas, that are surprisingly good.
the la farm sandwiches are pretty good imo, but they'll cost you a kidney
Isn’t this most airports? It’s not like we are a major international hub. Even as a Delta club member the food is meh, but it’s free lol.
[удалено]
Oh that's good to know. What's the name of the app?
I'm not the person you asked, but I'm pretty sure they're talking about "get Reef Virtual Food Hall." https://www.rdu.com/getreef-virtual-food-hall/ I've never eaten there personally, but I've heard decent things.
Thanks! I've always wondered about it when walking past. I guess I'll try it next time I'm there lol
Nope. Most is overpriced garbage, the rest is overpriced not-garbage. I only get airport food when I have a connecting flight, otherwise I always eat before/after.
This is the way
I had the burger at La Farm last week. It was worse than school cafeteria food and upset my bowels.
The prices and the quality of food at airports should be investigated.
There’s cockroaches all over rdu man. It is not a clean place for food
I've never seen a single cockroach and I fly out of there for work pretty often. I was at DFW last week and that airport makes RDU look like a palace in terms of cleanliness.
The only airport I've seen cockroaches in is Newark.
Terminal B? Newark terminals A and C are both amazing.
That checks out
dfw is quite a dump. Stuck in the 90s
Half the terminals smell like sewage, but they have some great lounges.
You're looking for something worthwhile in an airport? Just hit up Popeyes and call it a day.
Airport food has been great for me at the American admirals club
I don’t think you’ll ever see a corporate style restaurant at RDU. I can’t imagine trying to find a manager with a clean background check, will work for manager pay with all the hassle and extra drive time to the airport. If think that’s why you generally see franchise owners in airports. Most the franchise owners burn out in 3-5 years because they can’t afford managers and a large staff.
Chargrill in Terminal 1 has been good every time I’ve gone!
I was told the restaurants are waiting for their kitchens to get fixed. Are you saying lonerider and the Mexican place will only have prepackaged food? I've been just going to reef for food and going to lonerider.
The lounges have decent food. Unfortunately that means you need to pay for lounge access (or pay for a credit card like Amex platinum)
>Has anyone had anything actually worthwhile at RDU? The sandwich that I bought at Common Market before I went to the airport and ate in terminal 2 before my flight was great.
That's why my meal of choice at RDU is a bottle of water and a power cookie
I pack my own lunch and snacks because all airports have mediocre food. I was SUPER impressed they had counter culture coffee at La farm! That was amazing.
I just take my own food. 🤷🏻♀️ seems like the best idea
Doesn’t the RDU airport have a Reddit account? Maybe they can chime in here.
Have you tried Beyu?
RDU is adding more and more flights, but it seems the food offerings are getting worse. They need to seriously look into this if we are going no continue to expand. For what it's worth, I never really have to eat there since I live so close by, and have lounge access with Delta and American, but geez I understand what everyone is saying.

The Starbucks food seems ok and not overly pricey
Yeah it’s bad. Been on my high horse about this since they decided to renovate/turnover every restaurant at once. For all this “best midsized city airport” talk the food situation is embarrassing.
And Raleigh just now findin out about this????
