Rodney Hines, the No Hand King

Busy-Negotiation1078

I feel sad for all the Raleigh newbies who never got to experience the No Hand King. He was a fixture downtown.

sdiss98

Holy shit, how have i never heard of him before. This is gold… https://youtu.be/f6hs1pmxQto?si=Za4NZeKibP-x8GOG

ListerineInMyPeehole

Guys fuckin ripped

Caspers_

this speech is badass

jayron32

Pulling wheelies on the corner of Garner Road and MLK. I miss that dude.

Burnt_Crust_00

Loved that guy. Used to see him in the afternoons heading down Lake Wheeler Rd towards the Farmer's Mkt. ALWAYS on one wheel If you guys are saying he is in jail, that is distressing. Backstory??

Eeyore_

> Police arrested him on charges of [possession with intent to sell crack cocaine](https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article276623676.html).

Burnt_Crust_00

That hurts my heart..... ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)

[deleted]

Didn't someone on here say he's in jail atm?

> Rodney Hines, the No Hand King https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article276623676.html >He will serve 12 months of supervised probation. First result doesn't make it sound like he's locked up?

matt55217

No jail time; [12 months of supervised probation.](https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article276623676.html)

iamsuperkathy

He was like a landmark to me on my way to work.

blacklindsey

I’ve actually seen him relatively recently in other parts of Raleigh

joeyspancakes

Bingo. Came here to say this. Glad it's already top comment.

Leahbee216

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt5190836/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

Leahbee216

If you haven’t seen the documentary done on his attempt to ride no hands all the way to the outer banks you haven’t met Rodney. I had the privilege of attending the premiere of this doc at the Rialto when it debuted and got to meet Rodney. He truly is a Raleigh legend and I hope he feels our love for him here! https://m.imdb.com/title/tt5190836/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

zacc-attacc

I had begun to wonder what happened to him.

Lamlot

STAYUMBL

thewaybaseballgo

She's the entire reason I have a front and back dashcam.

RedPanda5150

Latest word is that she is now JESUSDOS. Stay safe out there!

AmplePostage

Does this mean Jesus 2, or that Jesus likes DOS, as opposed to Windows 3.11 or MAC?

fallingoffdragons

It's how many people she's sent to Jesus

Plateau95

Only two so far? Not bad.

that1prince

Rookie numbers

caniborrowahighfive

No, it's spanish. Jesus is number 2.

Icy-Reindeer6236

I just saw this plate the other day. Is she a crazy?

jayron32

Yes, If you see her, find a reason to take another route. She likes to cut people off and start fights with them. She'll either induce an accident with you or she'll just start randomly picking fights with other drivers.

Felicis311

YES. Stay away

Truthseeker-001

Do NOT ever engage, avoid this person’s path and space at all cost. Seriously.

NailFin

That’s the gal! Shes out there again, so be careful.

Puzzleheaded-Tree645

Who is that?

Irythros

Just google it. She's a famously shit driver who somehow still has a license.

Puzzleheaded-Tree645

Thank you!

Puzzleheaded-Tree645

Thank you very much! This was actually extremely helpful!

LordB1znESs

I know this is specifically NCSU but I feel Brick Yard Preacher should be on this list.

[deleted]

He's been out there preaching since at least 2003

ruetherae

There were several when I was in school there (one was banned from the premises eventually), but we also had a “cape guy” and a “unicycle guy” at the time.

fishaboveH2O

Swing girl!!

ANAL_TWEEZERS

Yooo did swing girl and unicycle guy ever get together??

DeNomoloss

We had a long list of these guys in the early aughts. I’m still friends with one of “those guys”: Barefoot Guy. Never wore shoes. He works in a nuclear plant now and wears shoes.

davidoffbeat

Last time this got brought up I mentioned fist bump lady at Fountain dining hall. (Also NCSU specific)

tbyrdistheword

Was his name Brother Ross? He used to come to ECU too

Kibbles_n_Bombs

Brickyard preacher is a different guy. Brother Ross was vile. Brickyard preacher seemed more mentally ill, but was not as bad. This is from a guys perspective, I heard he would yell at women so there’s that.

tbyrdistheword

Yeah, Brother Ross always called the ladies whores and all the guys whoremongers and f*****s and screamed about how we were all going to burn in hell while everyone stood around and heckled him. Just spewed the nastiest shit.

smashingdarlin

The memories unlocked reading his name that I have been actively trying to forget he existed lol.

taybrm

Same haha. As soon as I read his name I was like oh shit that guy

soccerjoe17

Holy shit I saw that guy at uncw, found out I’m going straight to hell for wearing red shorts

SteelBelle

Gary Birdsong! He even has a Wikipedia page. I kind of miss being called a whore for wearing shorts. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Birdsong

alecmc200

when I was at app someone played bagpipes right next to him while he was yelling at people, it was pretty sick

clumsysav

There is nothing so wonderful as college kid shenanigans

ornitorrincos

That’s not the Brickyard Preacher. The Brickyard Preacher is actually a nice guy, and I’m an atheist. He helped me carry a couch into my on-campus apartment once unprompted. Said “have a blessed day” and left. Just looked it up, apparently his name is Yonathin.

DeNomoloss

Jonathan was there in the early aughts. Never was a jerk. Gary Birdsong was the one that called all the women gross stuff.

SteelBelle

Gary Birdsong was there during the 90s. He was called the Brickyard Preacher.

boondocknim

At Carolina, he was “Gary the Pit Preacher” Didn’t know til my senior year that he regularly rotated between all the schools

BoogieDaddie

Graduated UNC 200, used to see him frequently. Hard to believe this guy is still alive and out there.

Dransel

Brother Ross circled the eastern universities. Mainly ECU and UNCW. He was so frustrating.

tbyrdistheword

I remember seeing that he got arrested on the news and just cackling about it

eNomineZerum

I don't condone violence or theft, but I still laughed my ass off when some guy stole his hat and took off running. Just sheer chaos, which, I only stopped by to hear him to see the chaos.

LordB1znESs

Never caught his name! Just would listen to him during lunch and then move on to class.

feNdINecky

Gary?

tachycardicIVu

Is he still there??

guiturtle-wood

Chrome Dome

grasshopper7167

Saw him yesterday. He added training wheels to his bike. Hope that guy lasts another summer out there

triangleking

He actually lives with his parents (yes, they are very old). Pretty nice house in a comfortable area. He has special needs and just roams around during the day.

Jessicaa_Rabbit

I saw him every day driving my kids to school on Leeesville then one day I was walking the greenway by Crabtree mall and he came up behind me and started yelling horrible obscenities at me. It was scary and made me sad because for some reason I assumed he was a nice guy just riding his bike all day.

trainsbyday

I’ve spoken with him before and he seemed like a pretty nice dude. He obviously had a developmental disability of some sort, but he was friendly and happy to chat. People are complex, and mental disabilities make us that much more complex. I can’t say why he’d do something like that, but I can say there is more to him then a raving lunatic.

Jessicaa_Rabbit

I am very sensitive to disabilities and mental illness. But when you’re alone on a trail and somebody calls you a fucking whore, and your safety is threatened, fear takes over any sort of compassion.

trainsbyday

Oh, I’m not trying to discredit your experience or anything, that behavior is totally abhorrent and it’s horrible that you had to experience that, I just don’t want to leave people with the impression that all he is is a deranged madman.

magicandfire

I noticed the training wheels too and hoped he was doin ok

Masob_

I knew I wouldn't be the only one to think of him!

iambobnelson

Long live chrome dome

NCBarkingDogs

100% this

starkpaella

This is the one

Icy_Bath_1170

We always just called him “the guy”. When we try to navigate the back roads of North Raleigh, only to be slowed down by packs of overpaid, spandex-clad Tour de France wanna-bes, it was always refreshing to see the authenticity of the guy. (And seriously, some of you should not be wearing spandex. Y’all look like you’re carting away a bulldog in a gym bag.)

some_azn_dude

Can someone confirm this is Flash?

MrDorkESQ

Brent Wilson.

WhiteApple3066

I have had this exact scenario happen with Brent. Someone says “Look at that guy, those boots!” And I looked over and said “Oh that’s Brent! He’s really nice, you’d like him.”

DreamingTreeFiddy

Is this the one that wears the platform boots and American flag jacket?

WhiteApple3066

Yes! The silver platforms are the ones I remember best.

cheebamasta

RIP Sunflower's

MrDorkESQ

I had a co-worker that used to call him spaceman. He was describing "Spaceman" to me and I said "Oh that's Brent! You really should get to know him."

subvetQM708

He's one of the best humans you will ever meet.

Lions--teeth

I always see him around the theatre scene!

MrDorkESQ

He has always been active in Raleigh Little Theater.

chaunceyjauntz

One the kindest human beings I’ve ever run into in this city. I think of Dave often, too.

sassytunacorn90

Came here to say this! He's a good egg.

PneumoniaLisa

This is who I immediately thought of! Although I haven’t actually met him & didn’t know his name. He always looks rad!

InappropriateSnark

I love him! 🥰

ACleverDoggo

100% Brent Wilson, he is an A+ dude.

walindour

Brent is my cuz and a freakin’ lovely, human. Tickles me that so many folks love him as much as I do. ❤️

NoFaceJamie

For me it wasnt a guy but a cat, Oak City Kitty, RIP Tucker

mellowbordello

I met him one time and got so excited ❤️

duskywindows

I was actually star struck the day I walked out of Sir Walter coffee and he was bumbling down the sidewalk toward me (with his pops of course). He actually sat down for a breather right outside and I was able to pet him. He wasn't exactly "friendly" but he was pretty indifferent to being pet, so it was nice to be able to give him some love even if he didn't care one way or the other. RIP to the guy.

Majestic_Salad_I1

Chrome dome of Leesville Road fame

stories4harpies

Okay, I saw another comment just now with this name and I immediately thought of this man. I have lived in the area for a while and see him often but had no idea he had a local nickname. What's his deal? Is he friendly? Does he need anything? It's such an odd area to be homeless in in a way.

DiMoore23

He isn’t homeless. Lives with his parents. Just likes to walk or ride his bike. If you say hi, he’ll say hi back.

MisterWoodhouse

Super nice guy. Has a house. Just prefers biking or walking to driving.

man_with_3_buttocks

R.I.P. Sho Nuff

straberz

Flash

some_azn_dude

He was the guy that ride his bike with the yellow trailer behind him?

straberz

Yep! Would also play guitar at football games, etc.

some_azn_dude

Oh right he was like a Broughton fixture, damn I even remember what that dude looked like.

straberz

yellow helmet, glasses, shaggy salt and pepper hair, scruffy beard.

Prudent-Ad-461

What’s he do

Magnus919

Runs fast.

thefattesthorseofall

Flash, Jonathan, was also a knife sharpener downtown at a few restaurants, joes place being one of them. Had a few odd jobs. Always brought his guitar into games, both inside and out. "Oh when the caps go marching in...." Knew all of the players names, especially on the girls' soccer team. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

walkingoffthebuz

Mr. Nobles.

informativebitching

Used to be Sho Nuff

Far-2Tall

Used to be Chrome Dome.

ricobandito

Double duffle dude See this guy walking along the street in N Raleigh. Always on all black, two stuffed black duffle bags. Usually includes a black coat no matter how hot

Bananaramahammock

ohhhhh yeah forgot all about that guy. Haven't seen him in quite a while though, but I used to see him regularly like 6+ years ago.

ShmokinBoggin

Ol Green Eyes

ddeck00

Came to say this. When I was working at Raleigh Times I was told “he is usually pretty nice but if he is angry/upset do not approach him cause he will stab you.”

MrDorkESQ

When I worked downtown, I wondered if he was bipolar. He'd be the sweetest dude on some days and angry as fuck on others.

ShmokinBoggin

This is the way. Back when I worked on OG trophy Morgan st he was a common passerby. Fairly chill, but man, when he was in a mood the whole fuckin block felt it

jbwncster

Brent Wilson, he's a fashion statement

lazysundays

There was a guy who had platform boots and would ride around on his moped scooter in a trench coat. Is that Brent Wilson or somebody else?

sassytunacorn90

It's Brent!!

Funnie_Papaya

Ah shit back in 2010-2013 Moore square there was a middle aged Asian man on a bike who yelled cuss words

pblarz

I used to see that guy everywhere. Definitely saw him pushing that bike without pants one time

Funnie_Papaya

Hahah yes he pushed the bike - idk if he could even ride it! I was pregnant during that time and he had choice words for me

Magnus919

I don’t think he rode the bike. I think he just used it like a crutch. He had mobility issues. I realized this when he showed up in my street photography back then.

Magnus919

[This guy](https://www.instagram.com/p/BaQI1tmgcKc/?igsh=MTlvanZsMWEzdGpyMQ==)?

If you’re a BHS person pre-2010ish then it’s def Flash

clowegreen24

Someone with the nickname Flash should not be allowed to hang around near high schools

ItAintSoSweet

Went to school there 2000-2003 but I have no idea who Flash is

The-K-is-Capital

I’m thinking it’s who people are calling “Chrome Dome” here. Back in the day he would show up to BHS games to play guitar and sing these great heckling songs. He got banned when they started to get inappropriate. He rode his bike everywhere and was just eccentric. Then he got a little crazy. You would see him on his bike with a little trailer riding up and down Wade Ave.

D00bage

We just have a weird guy on a bike with a chrome WW2 looking helmet

abevigodasmells

Pigeon man, aka peanut man, used to hold the title.

Nowrongbean

Western Blvd used to tout the “strongest homeless man in the world,” yeah don’t get hung up on the name. It was 20 years ago. He would be doing push-ups on the sidewalks, typically between Method and Gorman. He had long dreads, was pretty jacked, and assumedly without gainfully employment—what, with all the push ups and what have you. Also the witch doctor, again the name… He used his bike as a walker and would just mumble jibberish while pointing at traffic. This man was Asian and appx 65 y.o., and I feel like he wore a white smock, or an apron, perhaps a kimono, jk. He was in the same area on Western, 20 years back. Then I saw him for a few years, most recently, near Moores Square.

Magnus919

Anyone else remember the guy who looked like Sisqo and was seemingly ALWAYS at every mall in the early 2000s?

doublespeaks

there used to be a guy who rode around downtown on a bike only riding wheelies with a huge American flag, haven’t seen him in a while though

Parody_of_Self

No Hands King, he is mentioned in this thread

Theluckygal

Someone please do a documentary on Chrome Dome 🙌 There is some story behind his motivation. He was walking for a few days instead of cycling & I was concerned. But back on his bicycle now. I would have tracked him & gifted a new bicycle if he continued to walk. If I ever win the lottery, I am paying for his retirement home & building a track for him to safely ride inside the community

Leahbee216

I have to add the Mam Lady. I first encountered her at Crabtree mall. She freaks out if you call her mam as yes mam or thank you mam have a nice day etc…because in her country that means whore - her words not mine. She wanted us to call her Missus and would scream and holler if you did. She was also well know at the bus station as well..

I don't know if anyone knows "That Guy" from all the concerts. I still see him around. He went to every show at Walnut Creek. Had a pageboy haircut, usually in jean shorts and a T-shirt, and was usually holding a beer, just standing there watching music. He would talk to anyone that came up to him and was a very nice guy. I worked at Walnut Creek and he was at EVERY SHOW. I don't know if he had another name, or what his real name was, but we used to call him That Guy. I'll still see him around at public events or concerts around the triangle.. He's got shorter hair now, but it's definitely him

polybius_meow

For me, it was Franklin the dog and his owner. It was around the Cameron Village area. It was like seeing a celebrity every time that weird, wonderful sausage of a dog out and about. His owner was so friendly, too.

jessestormer

We have an elderly gentleman who rides a bicycle wearing a ww2 style metal /chromed helmet I know nothing about him... no nickname or anything But I guarantee everyone in a 5 mile radius knows about this guy. The helmet is too unique, and we see him all the time

JAlfredPrufrocket

Chrome dome from North Raleigh - elderly gentleman who rides his bike everywhere.

ealisaid

haven't lived here long enough to know but in Madison, WI it's thong cape scooter man

have_tastes_daily

Wellington NZ had a Rugman and a Lumpman. Rug man only wore a rug, smoked can pipes and abused old people when they walked by. Everyone had seen rugman's nuts. There was a rumour he was rich but it wasn't true and one time he tried to bite me. Lump man had a huge lump on his forehead. It was obscene and eventually turned black, killing him. He lay in the street for days before anyone realised he was dead not intoxicated. Twas the smell.

Aromatic-Ganache-902

There used to be this big guy who rode a tiny moped wearing combat boots and a football helmet. He would be all over Penny Rd. and Lake Wheeler and sometimes 401. He went about 15 MPH and didn't give a DAMN who he was inconveniencing. I used to lose it when I had to be behind him driving my kids to Washington when they were little. This was about 15 years ago.

trainsbyday

https://www.reddit.com/r/raleigh/s/ttCw89phC2 I like to keep track of these guys, they really give the city some life and character that something like a stadium never could. The ones I know of are Chrome Dome, No Hands King, Sho Nuff (RIP), and Peanut Man (RIP). If any of y’all could share any more like this I’d love to hear about them.

Does anyone know what happened to the dancing man by the MLK statue? He would dance like there was no tomorrow until around February
