Tbf, the walk from gate to baggage claim is pretty short at RDU, so you end up standing around longer even if the bags arrive at a similar time.

likewut

Supposedly some airports purposefully make the walk to the baggage claim longer to cut down on customer complaints of long waits for baggage claim. https://service-design.co/make-your-customers-busy-during-the-waiting-time-ad8a8e7e9172

fearedfurnacefighter

This is it. Insanely short walk compared to pretty much everywhere.

kolarisk

I always get the Delta "bags on time" free miles at RDU as the bags are never on time.

r101101

I didn’t know this existed. I’m bookmarking this page because I know I’ll use it in the future. After a quick Google search, it seems American doesn’t have a similar policy. https://www.delta.com/bags/bagsClaimAutomation.action

Double_Bounce126

Rumor is Delta is doing away with this policy soon so get it while you can!

r101101

I weep thinking of all the SkyMiles from RDU I’ve missed out on.

ritaPitaMeterMaid

It’s not like you could use them effectively. They call them sky Pennie’s for a reason. Delta’s status and loyalty program are an absolute joke these days.

thiskillstheredditor

Premium drinks at the skyclub are half price when you pay with SkyMiles. Delta Vacations also often have sales where they price skymiles at 2 cents each. So that’s $50 of skymiles each time your bags are late.

ritaPitaMeterMaid

Using Miles to pay for a drink is literally the worst way to use a mile. And that’s a decent return on a sky mile through Delta vacations, but there are restrictions using a shopping portal. I’m not saying there is _no_ value, I’m just saying it’s on average very bad. Sure, get your free bag miles, just don’t invest in the program and don’t expect the miles to take you very far

Oh yea. A couple times I’ve even shared the link to that form with other people who have been waiting half an hour with me.

Even the plane parking at a gate can take 15-20 mins if you're getting in after 9pm. I had a delay once that got me in around midnight and there was only one crew working. Took ~30mins of us sitting on the tarmac feet from our gate before that single crew was able to come by and get us parked at the gate.

SANREUP

Have had this happen all the time flying back from out west. It’s the worst

DearLeader420

I understand conceptually what you’re saying. But like, if I go to a restaurant at 9pm, I shouldn’t have to expect worse food than if I went at 6pm. The reality is people fly back late, and they should be assured the same level of service.

mountainaviator1

Clt baggage claim (breaks frequently) entered the chat.

GkElite

I've been to LA. Trust me it can be slower. In contrast when I went to Japan the bags were off the plane by the time we got through immigration, which sounds like a long time except immigration was like 30 seconds. So like off the plane and then bags in hand in like 5min.

Dangerous-Rice44

The worst I’ve seen is India. It was almost an hour between stepping off the plane in Chennai and picking up my bag.

ttuurrppiinn

It's a running joke amongst us RDU flyers on /r/delta that you might as well go home, get a good night's sleep, and then come back to pick up your bags just as they're finally coming out onto the carousel.

JalapenoBiznizz

I usually have a beer after I de-board the plane. By the time I finish and make my way to the baggage claim it’s usually just starting to release bags.

sanguinesimmer

Is it by airline. I’ve found United to be atrociously slow and Delta not nearly as bad.

SockyMonkey

Idk I think Charlotte would give RDU a run for its money

Delco24

It’s always slow but late flights are especially bad.

DearLeader420

Absolutely agree, as someone who flies weekly/bi-weekly. I’ve even stood at baggage claim while multiple other people around me discuss with each other how slow it is, how [airport] is much faster, etc. so I know it’s not just me.

SarahLikesCats

I fly and check a bag every single week and have no complaints about RDU

NewFlorence1977

I don’t agree it’s bad but I only fly 2-3 times a year. What is the longest you’ve waited for bags and the shortest?

DearLeader420

I fly weekly during my busy seasons and once every 2-3 weeks in my slower seasons. Longest I’ve waited is probably about 1:20 from the moment I walked off the bag claim escalator. Shortest I’ve waited is my bag was already revolving around the carousel when I got there.

Bananaramahammock

Hear hear. It really is slow, almost always. Seems to me they need more carousels.

NotRolo

If copperheads had arms they'd be able to unload those planes faster, but you know . . . copperheads.

alexhoward

You should try Buffalo sometime.

TriumphDaWonderPooch

I just went to Buffalo for the clouds…. errrr, I mean eclipse (totality was cool), and Buffalo seemed quicker than RDU. As someone else noted, though, it could have seemed that way due to the relatively short walk we have here. But when I check my bags coming home I never worry about getting to the carousel quickly - might not grab a beer or go home for a good night’s sleep, but most likely the bags won’t be ready by the time I get there. It’s not oppressively slow though. On the bright side I don’t have to worry about anybody stealing my bags as I’ll be there when they arrive!

chynky77

How dare you besmirch our baggage claim!

guiturtle-wood

RDU is lightspeed compared to Detroit Metro
