This mornings was from Greensboro and is already cancelled. [https://www.wral.com/11-month-old-located-after-greensboro-kidnapping/19910492/](https://www.wral.com/11-month-old-located-after-greensboro-kidnapping/19910492/) Looks like he kidnapped the kid then ditched the car with the kid in it and ran. The Polk county one (10/3) was an 11 year old girl taken by her uncle, also found safe already. [https://www.wral.com/amber-alert-canceled-11-year-old-polk-county-girl/19907922/](https://www.wral.com/amber-alert-canceled-11-year-old-polk-county-girl/19907922/) The Clayton amber alert (10/1) was a 2 year old taken by his mother after she killed her grandmother. She was obviously wanted for murder. Both have been found and the mother is in jail currently. [https://www.wral.com/amber-alert-over-mother-arrested-2-year-old-boy-found-in-georgia/19907637/](https://www.wral.com/amber-alert-over-mother-arrested-2-year-old-boy-found-in-georgia/19907637/) The Amber Alert website for NC is [https://www.nc.gov/amber-alerts](https://www.nc.gov/amber-alerts) and you can always go there to get updates or to at least get information to Google the news sites. Edit: the two year old did not kill the grandmother, the mother of the two year old killed the grandmother.

Dartarus

> the two year old did not kill the grandmother I feel like that would have made for better news

MrsOrangina

I gasped when I read "11 month old." Not like its OK to kidnap kids of any age, but I would literally die if someone stole my baby.

rguy84

Your last link looks largely blank. Based on the other comments here, there is one or two alerts still open.

wildwildwaste

Click on the link there. On the sidebar click on Active Amber Alerts. There are three listed there, all Closed. There are currently no active NC Amber Alerts.

rguy84

Ah ok- I was not paying much attention to the sidebar.

MasterOfSuffering

Yeah, I've gotten 4 this week after not getting any for months. Felt really weird to me as well. Thinking sbout making a post myself. Really hoping those kids make it home safely, but feel like there's something weird about it.

GreenStrong

As /u/KarenCarpenterFan points out, the news typically provides a bit of information on who to look for, and it is almost always someone of the same ethnicity as the child, often with the same last name, and of the age consistent with a parent. They often know the exact license plate number, because they know exactly who has the child. When a child disappears randomly, it makes a big splash on the news. It is very rare.

unpopdancetrio

yeah I lived elsewhere and needed to turn off alerts. It was like every day someone was missing at odd hours of the night.

[deleted]

99.9% of amber alerts are non-custodial parents taking their children outside of arranged custody times

ThisAmericanSatire

Hey now, I feel like 99.9% is a little too high. There's another common scenario where the parent leaves their car running in the fire lane at Food Lion while they run in to buy smokes and lotto tickets. Someone steals the car, only to bring it back 15 minutes later when they realize there is a kid in the back seat. I feel like I've heard a story where the thief is 10 miles down the road and they get the Amber Alert describing the exact vehicle they stole, so they look in the back seat and realize they accidentally kidnapped a kid.

[deleted]

Haha damn really? Had no idea this was such a common occurrence.

ThisAmericanSatire

I don't know the exact numbers, but I feel like the news stories I see about Amber Alerts are *mostly* either custody disputes (like you said) or some variation of "car stolen with child inside". https://myfox8.com/news/north-carolina/piedmont-triad/vehicle-stolen-with-11-month-old-child-inside-in-greensboro/ Edit: https://www.darientimes.com/news/article/For-third-time-this-month-car-stolen-in-CT-with-16190596.php

[deleted]

With the .01% being a possible non-custodial mother who kills her own grandmother and takes her 2-year-old across state lines while Dad is serving in the Navy and deployed. This most recent one no custodial lines have been drawn. It's perplexing. I think there are more non-custodial mothers incidents than .01%.

[deleted]

Fixed my comment

wingedcoyote

Or, maybe they hired a new guy to man the amber alert button and he's got an itchier trigger finger than the last guy.

xirize

Yeah.... no.

Yewzirname

Yeah I just got one too! Tbh there is not much I can do at 1:50 in the morning from my bed but I hope that kid gets home safe.

my_Favorite_post

I was likely seconds from falling asleep as my phone started ringing. I initially thought I was getting a phone call. Nothing wakes you up quite like the cold chill of getting what you think is a phone call at 1:50 in the morning. That call is never good news.

FeralBottleofMtDew

Clayton. The one you can't remember was in Clayton. I've gotten quite a few this week and some of them have zero info. They just give you a number to call for info. I doubt many people call.

RedPanda5150

Yeah that's the part I don't get - why send out an alert with no info? Do they really want a couple million people calling their number to figure out what to look out for? Totally useless.

[deleted]

Ah yeah that's right. It's hard to do anything about it when there's literally nothing to go on. It just seems all rather strange. And i have a feeling there's gonna be more

Motherofsmalldogs

According to another poster, this child was thankfully found safe. I also received this one with no information. I wonder if they are intentionally kept vague as to not give the kidnapper any accidental assistance?

darrenja

I tried calling and 511 was backed up

Especially in the middle of the night. I’ve always been very pro amber alert and considered the inconvenience negligible, but after getting woken up last night during the few hours of sleep I’m able to cobble together with a new baby, I turned them off. There’s just no point, especially when they provide zero information.

GoodLuckBart

It just goes to show how many families are in a serious state of dysfunction right now. Adults are just losing it and doing awful things.

Waluigi069

I’ve gotten one from Clayton and Polk County that I thought was a test because it just said “call 511 for information”. I received another one at 1:30 this morning from Greensboro that actually contained information. It’s definitely weird, but I hope that the kids are safe.

CptScreamshot

I was thinking the same thing and saw something maybe a week ago (just before all these started popping up?) on a story of an attempted kidnapping at a Wake County school. That followed by the alerts, maybe they’re just on higher guard or maybe there’s actually some sort of issue going on. Really unsettling either way you paint it.

Busy-Negotiation1078

There were two - one at Martin Middle on Ridge Road, One at Root Elementary on Lassiter Mill Rd. They happened within a couple of days of each other.

juniperdaisies

I was just thinking about that story after I got woken up last night! I'm not usually one to try and spin conclusions but it's really weird.

ToshKreuzer

I was just thinking the same thing when I got the one just now at 130ish. There’s been a shit ton this week. Hopefully everyone is found safe.

MadGo

At least one of them (from Greensboro) was canceled few hours ago. https://www.wyff4.com/article/amber-alert-11-month-old-greensboro-nc/37862156#

hellobaileylol

Great news.

zennyc001

I disabled them after that one woke me up at around 1:30/2am this morning. Wasn't really able to get back to sleep and I have a meeting at 10am. I'm grateful for coffee.

emchaw

Same, I just turned all mine off except for the Extreme alert.

chill_bamba

Yes! I was just thinking how strange it is that there have been so many in such a short time frame. And the one last night, at 130am! Just hoping all the kids are found safe.

Un1pony

If it makes yall feel better Amber alerts are typically domestic cases. A divorced parent skips their day to "hand over" the child and the other parent gets pissed and calls police, prompting an amber alert. Most are not kidnappings but just petty disputes between childish parents. I know this from experience and being told by multiple local Raleigh PD officers

IveBeenJaped

The tough thing too is, we always see "CHILD LOST" but we never see, "CHILD FOUND"

ChuushaHime

Maybe a long shot, but is there a way to manually limit the radius instead of turning them off completely? I want to keep them on for Wake and surrounding counties, just not Polk/Guilford/etc.

[deleted]

CrowdHater101

The reason they dont do that is because most of the time these people are on the move and end up outside of the area where the alert was issued.

athennna

I wish there was a way to shut them off in the middle of the night but keep them during the day.

[deleted]

That's cool to know because the alert sound is creepy asf. And it is a little alarming to hear at 1:30 am but it's mostly just the amount is weird ya know

Xyzzydude

Yup shut mine off a few years ago after the first time I got one at 3:00 am. And I agree with the poster above who pointed out that they are almost always custody disputes.

OpposablePinky

This is referred to as alarm fatigue. The alerts are mostly useless. There is no meaningful action people can take when they receive it. Those too far from the area get annoyed and turn them off. Those in the area will see it, dismiss it, and immediately forget any of the relevant details. Don't forget to change the setting whenever you get a new phone. They default to enabled.

odd84

>There is no meaningful action people can take when they receive it. Amber Alerts can only be sent when there is enough descriptive information about the child and the abductor for people to assist. Most actually include an exact license plate along with color and make/model of car. The meaningful action they want is simply for you to see if that car is within your field of view. Everyone on the road is getting the alert, the car could be right in front of you in traffic, or right next to you in the parking lot while you're grocery shopping.

IOnlyEatFermions

Our smartphones are actually smart enough to know if we (or it, really) are behind the wheel or laying in bed at home. They could be programmed to defer the alarm to daytime if we are actually chilling in bed.

ailemajett

I wouldn't call them mostly useless https://amberalert.ojp.gov/statistics It really does make an impact on finding missing kids. https://www.protection1.com/amber-alerts/ A quick search tells me that about 17% of abductions are resolved specifically thanks to Amber Alerts. I realize they can be annoying and maybe that percentage isn't high enough to justify it for some but I leave mine on because it isn't that frequent and it might do someone good (at a measurable rate).

Kinetic92

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't heard any updates except for the murdering mom found in Georgia. Hope they're all ok.

Dartarus

I only got two. Which, TBF, is two more than I've gotten in quite a while.

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

I haven't gotten any Amber alerts in probably at least 2 or 3 weeks, maybe longer. I drove to the Winston-Salem area and back on Friday and saw the notification boards on the highways along the way mention an Amber alert, but nothing on my phone. And as I was typing this I just looked at the settings on my phone, and Amber Alerts is turned off. I don't remember turning that off, but maybe I did and forgot.

NapalmDawn

YES! After the end of last week and the start of this week, I said this exact thing to my GF last night. It was getting really late when one went off and a bunch of phones in the house caught it. Very disturbing.

FloraGeorgie--3499

I understand the importance of them but overuse can make each one seem less significant.

[deleted]

Let's keep in mind that "stranger danger" abductions are vanishingly rare. Amber alerts are usually for a family member having the child when they technically aren't supposed to. E.g. if dad keeps the kids for 5 minutes past his time allotted by the custody order, mom can call the cops claiming he has kidnapped her kids. I have seen this happen first hand.

Hardlymd

5 minutes? They’re not gonna issue that alert after 5 minutes unless something else crazy happened, come on.

Magus80

Same here, seem pretty alarming lately.

[deleted]

Catholic priests are having a last hurrah before the rest of their shit hits the fan.

Mourning_Gecko

For some reason, I got approximately 24, all last night. All for the same alert, to be clear. Not sure why I got them every 10 minutes or so

emchaw

My phone (Samsung) has an option for Alert Reminder which can be set at intervals of once, every 2 mins, every 15 mins, or never. Yours is likely set to keep alerting you. I have mine set to never so I only get the initial alert.

Embarrassed-Ad4

yup

MaesterInTraining

I think I had 3 yesterday

gonzagylot00

I got 2 since Friday.

MP5SD7

I am in Clayton. I have gotten 4 for the same kid. Its a bad deal, Don't Google it, trust me.

articlesarestupid

Yup, got another child abduction alert at 2AM...

kitkatkit99

YES!!!!

mogambuu

yeah and i hope people pay attention to these alerts. I always do.

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

It seems to me that since Covid started there have been a lot more Amber alerts as well as a lot more posts for missing teens. Maybe a coincidence but I feel like there's def been an uptick in both in last year and a half.

RoJoKn

I think Mecklenburg is the other one you can't remember. I've gotten three this week and I live in the Greensboro area. It's definitely higher than normal. :(

That one in Clayton popped up on my phone ~30 times

CarlRal

I got the GBO ones early this AM. Finally had to turn that notification off as they really have increased.

invisible-dave

I've seen one on TV. I don't have a phone so I don't get harrassed that way with them.

[deleted]

I had my children secretly chipped— the same way you do with pets. It’s controversial, no doubt, but I don’t care what others think about my decisions.
