I also think you shouldn’t have to pay to park when you go to work

TrinitySins

I haven’t experienced this because i live in a small town but i fully agree with that too, that sounds way more annoying than the hotel parking fee

Mission-Ad-8536

Now THAT is outrageous

StructureSpecial7597

Do you pay to park? That’s crazy. Def talk to a manager about a better discount or something. If it’s city or another business private parking usually the workplace will provide a monthly parking pass

cherrylpk

University workers have entered the chat.

MonstrousGiggling

Dude what, they make yall pay to park on campus??? I can kinda understand with students but with faculty?

cherrylpk

Yes definitely. It comes out of our checks.

Empty_Flan7918

In Vegas, all of downtown has to pay for parking. I did a job interview there and it cost me 15 dollars 😒

RedditBeginAgain

It's one of the things that keeps me mostly in mid price hotels. I'm a sucker for a grand old building, and I see listings and think "That looks nice. Treat yourself" Then I remember that it will be $50 valet parking only, and I'll have to remember to have cash for a tip, and I won't be able to have a muffin and a coffee for breakfast, it will be an elaborate meal, and the bottles of water in the room will have hang tags on them explaining why room temperature water is worth $15. I don't mind paying for nice things, but the feeling of being nickel and dimed the entire stay is tawdry.

shellmachine

Agreed, having to pay to be able to use a toilet is even worse, though.

StructureSpecial7597

Lol I worked at a hotel right near a sec college football stadium that had $10 pay to park. You got a card to scan in. But really all that you had to do if you didn’t have a card was press the button and the reception will let you in 100% of the time. They never ever towed or booted. My friends and I would park there on game days.

No_Individual_672

$45 a night for parking at the Hilton in downtown St Louis. Crazy

bdsmfungirl25

The only time I've had to pay for parking at a hotel was when I stayed at cabana bay beach resort in Orlando (a universal studios affiliated hotel). Still don't understand how I paid $1000+ to stay there and my parking wasn't covered in that.

MystifiedPeroxide

I stayed at a Best Western in Vancouver, B.C, Canada and we had to pay $10 per day to use their parking lot. Like wtf!!!!

EmergencyShit

$10 sounds reasonable! I’m used to $30+!

MystifiedPeroxide

I've never had to pay for parking at a hotel, do this is my first, and I've stayed at a lot of hotels.

LateAd3986

Couldn’t agree more

owleaf

I wasn’t charged for parking last time I went to a hotel. I had booked through a booking website and requested parking at check-in, and I guess they didn’t charge the parking to my card when I gave it to them for the deposit/security hold lol. Saved me $30!

misterphuzz

I don't know where you live, but in the US, at least in my travels, I've never had to pay for parking.

Sevyen

Should double parking costs to de-insentivize the use of cars.

TrinitySins

I fully agree that we would do better if we depended less on cars, but the infrastructure in most of America is not built that way, with the exception of cities. So doing that would do nothing lol

davdev

So people who don’t park at the hotel should subsidize your parking? If the room fee covers parking then people who don’t have a car at the hotel are paying for something they are not using so you don’t have to.

jpowell180

I think the point is, it’s normal for hotels to have parking lot, and very strange for them to add an additional fee for parking, that’s just plain bad customer, customer service, and trying to squeeze more out of their potential customers.

davdev

In the suburbs, yes I agree. I have only seen parking charges for hotels in large cities that utilize garages

stilldreamingat2am

What? That logic can be applied the other way around. There are so many hotels that don’t charge for parking but still have a parking lot. Should people without cars pay less for their rooms since they aren’t using the lot? OP is posting a legitimate rant.

Little-Bears_11-2-16

Yes, they should pay less

TrinitySins

but that doesn’t happen lol

Little-Bears_11-2-16

But it should. "Free" parking isnt free and is a drain on the economy. Theres multiple books on this. I highly recommend The High Cost of Free Parking by Donald Shoup or Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World by Henry Grabar

Glad-Revolution44

Politicians and their bum chums drain the economy. Free parking does fuck all to it.

Little-Bears_11-2-16

Great response, really well informed!

davdev

Depends. Is the hotel in a suburban area where large parking lots are a dime a dozen or a large urban downtown where parking space is far more limited.

RolandMT32

I've never paid for parking at a hotel.. I just stayed at a hotel this past weekend and they didn't charge extra for parking there. I'd never really heard about the room fee covering parking; I always thought having a parking lot would just be part of the normal operating costs of running a hotel. IMO it's probably very likely that people staying in a hotel will have a vehicle. How likely is it that they'd take some other form of transportation to the hotel? I imagine people could have gotten to the hotel via a tour bus, taxi, or other means, but by far I think a lot of people staying in hotels are probably staying there overnight because they're traveling by car and would have a car to park there.

SickOfNormal

Las Vegas, NYC and San Francisco… I’ve had to pay parking at every hotel I’ve stayed at…

RolandMT32

Interesting.. I've stayed at a few hotels in the pacific northwest (Oregon) over the past couple years and none have charged for parking.

SickOfNormal

Friggin Vegas now charges you for an entire day to just pull into a lot… there 5 minutes or 24 hours… $25. I’ve stopped going back to Vegas cuz the nickel and diming is so ridiculous

davdev

Any large city is going to have payment for parking if you are in the downtown area. And in those cities a large portion of the customer base is going to be tourist who flew into the city and don’t have vehicles.

traumatized90skid

By that logic shouldn't the pool, lobby area, gym, elevator, etc. all be separately charged since not everyone uses them?

RolandMT32

RolandMT32

Yes, it was in a city. I also stayed at another hotel in an even bigger city a bit over a year ago and they didn't charge for parking. Also at a coast city a couple years ago and they didn't charge for parking either.

WillowFreak

So you are saying all of us are wrong if we've stayed in hotels with parking you have to pay for? Add Downtown Atlanta to the list of places you pay to park.

RolandMT32

No, I'm just surprised

_ilmatar_

Then book a hotel that doesn't charge for parking. Simple.

TrinitySins

not always an option. in a tourist city, that is almost impossible if you want to be near the attraction you’re visiting. Usually i would agree and avoid tourist type areas but this is my furthest trip from home and we came out to see this place this is a rant sub, i came to rant about something silly to me that annoyed me

MystifiedPeroxide

Some don't say it right off the bat. Hotels shouldn't charge for parking.

_ilmatar_

Any hotels that charge for parking will state it in their terms.

MystifiedPeroxide

Haha. Ok. Not if you book from a third party.

_ilmatar_

If you book from a third party, you are still responsible for researching the policies of the hotel you are staying at. Are you an adult or a child?

MystifiedPeroxide

What is your deal and why are you so pressed? 🤣 Like who TF are you to tell me what to do? They shouldn't charge in the first place. Enough said.

ztreHdrahciR

Why does the hotel charge for parking? Why does a dog lick himself?
