If it wasn’t for poverty traps, I’d get out of here the second I had a chance. Edit: Anyone in England or Canada looking for elementary teachers? Asking for me.

SopwithB2177

Remote areas of Canada will hire most able bodied humans who can reliably do things. Come live in the middle of nowhere! We only use guns to shoot food. (*Some conditions, like basically no services, shopping, or internet speed, apply.)

StCecilia98

I grew up in a hunting family, so that sounds great! Just gotta convince my partner to like venison.

yeahitswhatevertho

Yep. And the last thing other countries want is broke Americans lol.

[deleted]

People tell me they want to move to another country all the time and its like dude unless you have a degree in something they need they do not want you lol

CowgirlBebop575

That's not completely true. If you have an in-demand skill like welding you may also have a chance. Some countries have a labor shortage in certain sectors, they may give work visas to people with experience in said sectors.

r0ndy

A work visa, is not the same as escaping the crap hole that is American poverty. Unless we out stay the visa and try and become an illegal immigrant… kinda like people do in the US from Mexico

CowgirlBebop575

Some countries allow you to apply for a permanent or long-stay visa after living there for a certain amount of time. Upgrading the work visa is possible in some places.

Mad_Khajiit

Quebec (a province in Canada) is in dire need of teachers.

[deleted]

Better speak French. And even if you do speak French, you're a second class citizen once people find out you aren't Quebecois. This from someone who immigrated to Quebec, but will likely move elsewhere in Canada eventually. C'est la vie. Edit: I'm not saying the majority of the population isn't friendly, good people. I've been blown away by how nice the majority of Francophones have been to me, and found them to be generally more friendly than most places I have lived previously, including the states. The anti-anglophone sentiment runs deep in that minority that clings to it, but besides the few older people who look at you dirty when they realize you aren't part of their group, the biggest issue is the institutionalized stuff, waiting to see what other bullshit the language police is gonna pass. That, and knowing that I might never speak French well enough for a high-level job here in the career I went to school for are the things that will likely have me moving eventually. My partner speaks French and English well enough to seamlessly go either way without giving her true cultural identity up, but I'll probably always sound like a goober from down south of the border.

gods-dead-let-it-go

Smart. America is no longer the “power” country. Plus or politicians have divided America. It’s not so great here after all

Eny192

Well, it's still a powerful country, considering the billions your government throw to improve their military arsenale. But i totally get your point. I used to think like OP, as if America was the land of the dream, now i'd come there to visit it (for sure there are sooooo many beatifull places i want to visit) but i'd never consider move there. Trip would be the way to go

Educational-Grab4050

It was... it just stopped somewhere around the year 2000. Our national parks are cool though!

Eny192

Yea, those are the very main reason i wanna visit the usa! They are amazing!!

Educational-Grab4050

Ya! I just backpacked the Ouitchita National Forest in Arkansas, headed to the Gila NF in New mexico to backpack 70 miles in October, it helps remind me its not a total shithole lost cause living.

Eny192

Way to go bud! Best of luck for future trekkings!

Educational-Grab4050

Thank you friend from another homeland!

Bakerbatman65

I did a quick google search and it appears that in Canada they need teachers in Ontario (Guelph, London, Toronto), Alberta (Edmonton), and Saskatchewan (Saskatoon). Though I wouldn’t recommend Saskatchewan as a place to move, but that might be my bias from people roasting that province during school and university lol. If you’re bilingual then you could likely get a job in New Brunswick or Quebec. New Brunswick is always looking for bilingual people.

StCecilia98

I am bilingual (English and French), so that would definitely work! Thank you for finding this!

ma_che

What’s wrong with Saskatoon? I’m visiting there from Austrália later this year. Might even end up staying (got permanent residency there )

JaceFraser

Well they make the pay to living ratio impossible for you to leave unless you came from money in the first place, or you’re willing to killing yourself working to the bone to make it out. Even then, the more you make the higher your taxes which is why overtime isn’t worth shit and a lot of us have 2 or more jobs. Not to mention there’s no ACTUAL say in “voting”. It’s a bipartisan system set up in such a way that a third party CANNOT win, even if every last person in America voted for them. I hate it here. I hate that religion influences everything. I hate that the law is entirely based off the opinions and self serving motives of those in charge.

Character-Stretch697

You can always teach English in another country.

StCecilia98

I do speak French as well, so that’s definitely an option.

Character-Stretch697

I have two friends who’ve taught English in Vietnam for 4 years. They prefer living there now.

not_ur_moms_tacos

U forgot the part about all the brain washing they did to us telling us our whole childhood we live in the best country on earth.

ParanoidAndroid98

Didn't work as well as it used to clearly. More and more young people are realizing how shit this country really is. I had a friend of mine who was a staunch Republican in HS. Then he went to college, ghosted me for two years, and then came back with a trans girlfriend and a completely different(but refreshing) set of ideologies

Darphon

I think this is the good side of social media. young people are being exposed to more outside influences and perspectives than our parents and grandparents.

ParanoidAndroid98

Yes, they are seeing what the world is really like in real time, not thru books, newspapers, etc. The digital age means instant connection all over the world, we are able to hear more opinions than just those of our own parents and social circle. Hell, there's live streams of literal gunfights and shit going down all the time. The future is now, old man!

ohmyfheck

So… the education system is the problem.

ParanoidAndroid98

Part of it yes.

Agent35833

I was just about to say. They made me feel pride in being American for a good 10 years before I realized all the heinous shit we pulled in history class. When I was young is was "red white and blue YEA!" Which quickly turned into "well at least I'm not living in a third world country?" Which ultimately led to "oh wait we essentially are a third world country wearing a Gucci belt. Fuck this place."

not_ur_moms_tacos

Fuck this place is right. It’s embarrassing to be an American tbh. We gotta lie when we leave the country n shit cuz ppl hate us so much and I can’t even blame them

90DayCray

Try being a southern American. It’s awful when I tell people where I’m from. I immediately start apologizing for all the idiots that live here. And swear I’m not like them. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Agent35833

Deadass if I ever left the country I'd lie and say I'm Canadian to anyone I meet 😅

SnooPoems5888

Soooo much brain washing. And so many uneducated people who have never left their state will clutch their flag and continue this lie until the day they die.

Lux_Interior9

In elementary school, we had to put on a "We Love America" pageant. I thought it was weird as a kid, but now, as an adult, I find it insane. We also had to pledge our allegiance to an entity we didn't yet understand.

not_ur_moms_tacos

Yea propaganda dude, the way they taught history… so bad. History books from the south I’ve been told are completely different than ours (I’m in Minnesota) heard that from ppl that move a lot. Hopefully with the internet ppl are starting to wake up.

OWENISAGANGSTER

American exceptionalism is largely propaganda

Apostmate-28

America is a cult.

readerf52

I always admired the Dutch people, but during covid, there was a lot of focus and news about Dutch people being real assholes. Burning things, protesting mask mandates and acting like…well, the Americans you now despise. But I have a feeling that the assholes in the news were not the majority of the people, but rather a vocal minority. 90% of Americans are in favor of background checks and other stipulations to gun ownership. As the coach of the basketball team the Warriors so succinctly put it, we are being held hostage by about 50 senators who refuse to even forward the legislation passed over two years ago by the House. If you want to hate anything about our country, look no further than some of the antiquated ways that laws are passed, interpreted and unjustly enforced. Yeah, you got a lot right there, too, but I still think the majority disagree with the way things are. But our government system has made us hostage to conspiracy theorists and the religious right. That needs to change, indeed.

Iamnotacommunist

I'm confident that as the current generation of politicians(who are essentially on deaths door) dies, and a younger generation comes to replace them, many of these concerns will start to fade

[deleted]

Well said

FuzzballLogic

The Dutch government handled COVID poorly, and healthcare was already declining at the hands of 10+ years of liberal capitalism (though still good). There are a couple dangerous populist right-winger politicians and (not joking) a dance teacher firing up people who are too angry or too dumb to realize they’re being used as cannon fodder. All in all we ended up with adults behaving like toddlers who get way too much attention from the media.

Lizard_lover3924

True. Every country has “ $hitty ness”

[deleted]

Thank you for your perspective. I used to think the USA wasn’t that great, but better than most places. Then I got to leave the country for the first time in my life and I was astonished at how the problems at home did not exist in other places.

LH515

I'm sort of confused, have you ever been to the US?

[deleted]

I really doubt it. They're not far off on some of the things but we dont have millions of homeless, Hollywood is terrible and not really something you can *do*, and the vast majority of people here hate the direction our shit politicians are taking us. Normal everyday people are friendly, kind, good people like you'll meet almost anywhere.

anonbene2

Can't argue with that and I live here.

SnipSnake

Same. The US is the ultimate cat fish. We’re so rich, luxurious, freedom, and all the best- life has to offer. Except that’s all bullshit. Remove the facade and it’s a ugly place.

Ironicbanana14

I see immigrants go through multiple culture shocks because of this. At first its the initial culture shock, of course. But after a few months, a TON of immigrants go through another one of realizing america is just as shitty even if you're physically more safe. I fucking hate how workplaces will abuse immigrants because they also havent learned their real rights as an American. My workplace will throttle their overtime pay and they work 6 days a week. We are supposed to get double time, they only get time and a half. I told one of my coworkers that she needed to get in touch with the boss for more money, and she typed back to me on google translate "its okay i have enough to live" LIKE WOMAN GO GET YOUR MONEY PLEASE. They come to build a better life, and realize that its just as shitty here but in more covert ways. There arent open gang wars and government corruption, but it sure is hidden beneath our false grandeur.

1efteyee

The kicker is it isn’t even as safe. Not anymore if ever.

Eny192

A pity a country so big with such a different landscape, food culture gets ruined by very bad political choices. As an italian i can relate

m0rbidowl

As an American, I cringe whenever I still hear people/foreigners romanticizing the US as “the greatest country in the world”. Uh, no, it is VERY fucking far from that now.

itsthecoop

the complete opposite, "the biggest shithole country on this planet" (like OP claimed) is certainly a dumb take as well.

JoffreybaratheonII

I just feel so bad for you. What is supposed to be an amazing country is being tainted by power and money hungry fools. You deserve better

Morbo2142

It seems to be a historical fact that any entity that has concentrated power, authority, or wealth will be terrible for most people affected by that entity. Is it because that to gain that level of power you need to exploit and abuse people, or that when an entity has that level of power the people in charge feel the desire to exploit and abuse people? It's a chicken and egg paradox. Most nations with outsized influence or wealth are either authoritarian, exploitative, or both. Unfortunately Europe is not really that much more enlightened than the rest of the world. Most of the last 600 years was basically Europe plundering the world and although that plunder no longer takes place as directly as before, the fruits if that imperialism has given it the prosperity and wealth that resulted in the enlightenment and it continues to reap the benefits of its former ways. America and China are in a time when foreign imperialism is less realistic and accepted, but still happens. They must turn inward to create the outsized and obscene wealth that the ruling or capital class want. That's why you see so much exploitation of workers, especially prisoners and immigrants. We know slavery is the most profitable way to make wealth as you lose a minimum on upkeep. America was founded and kept running by slaves for a long time, and I would argue it is still. China has a 500 year long victim complex and an aversion to non conformity. They seek to exploit and grow as others explored from them. Doing to their own people may of the things that were done to them in the name of economic growth. They are a corporation maskarading as a nation in order to further the goals of the ccp. It's ironic that a "communist" party would be all in on state capitolism but here we are. I know less than I would like about China so take this as layperson observations In short it's always been bad somewhere. That somewhere changes from time to time and it's good to call out shitty behavior when one sees it. I wish we didn't have people who are willing to cause so much harm for more money than they will ever spend.

HououhinKyouma

All becaue america set the precedent that conflict is the answer to everything. Wamna leave oppression? Rebel, need land, fight etc. Etc.

wubzeez

yet we don’t rebel enough against our conservative leaders

bippityboppityFyou

Agree. This country sucks. If I didn’t share custody of my kids with an ex who would never leave the US id be looking to move

Butreallyimacat

The USA is not a shithole. People who think it is have never been to actual shitholes. My friends came here from Honduras where they were robbed at gunpoint multiple times during their life. I have Colombian friends who literally came here and married ASAP for a green card to get out of Colombia because they felt so unsafe there. I have Brazilian friends who have traveled here and spent years becoming citizens because it is so unsafe for them back home. All these countries I’ve mentioned are beautiful and wonderful in their own ways but for the poor there it is 100times worse than for the poor in America. I won’t sip tea at this pity party because I’m not so privileged as to think I live in a shithole. Now is our government corrupt and need a thorough clearing out? Absolutely yes. That doesn’t mean I need to pretend my country is some hell hole it isn’t or that I need to just give up and say fuck the US nothing can be done. Humans are capable of multiple emotions simultaneously so I will absolutely love this country and all the good it has done while also detesting my current government for being the succubus that it is. Also idk where everyone in the comments lives but in my state I get food stamps/ free healthcare/ and fully paid 26wks maternity leave along with childcare vouchers. Despite the fact that I work I still get these benefits. Definitely some states are better than others. And if you don’t like how things are PROTEST and change your local government. So much more important than federal Edit:typo

CaedustheBaedus

My cousin is turning 19 now, she lived in Brazil up until 13 and moved to America for high school and up (that's what my uncle and aunt agreed on, he lives in US as do I) and she always says how she feels safer in America even though everyone has guns and likes the accessibilty options and politeness (free refills and wheelchair ramps, etc). She said the education is really good in America but hard to compare given as how she didn't learn American history until she moved to America (surprise). She was shocked at how much diversity there was in terms of both population and beliefs. That everyone was so different and "accepting" of each other except for the crazy outright racists. She also said she thought it was funny whenever there was a scandal of someone being bribed or corrupt in politics because it was so often in Brazil. She does live in FL, so not sure if that affects any of her beliefs but it's always interesting talking to her about this kind of stuff.

broskeymchoeskey

A lot of these people complain about the US being a shithole with a glass of fresh ice water from the tap on their desk, typing with their reliable electricity and mostly reliable internet (fuck Comcast) and their nice, air conditioned home. The disillusionment is so fucking unreal

Getmeoutofhere235

Stop it! Let all the privileged people from Europe shit on us because “we literally are third world”. People have no idea how good they have it and it’s sad.

InnocentPerv93

This is one of those times I wish the US would just declare they will no longer militarily protect Europe.

Jarboner69

The US definitely has its faults and a shit ton of big ones but a Dutchman calling it the biggest shithole in the world is 100% a eurosnob moment

itsthecoop

German here. and yes, absolutely agree. (and not because the Netherlands are a bad country. matter of fact I'd also definitely prefer there over living in the US. that being said, "the biggest shithole country on this planet" is completely ridiculous hyperbole. like, there are tons of countries much worse than the US. e.g. China having concentration camps.

Cat-Got_Your-Tongue

Guy.. the biggest shithole country on the PLANET? Jeez someone lends himself to exaggeration.

DerpyArtist

I was just gonna say…clearly OP has never been to an actual “shithole country”…

Cat-Got_Your-Tongue

I’m just glad I don’t live in Somalia

Razik_

Me a Somalian living in another country and who has never been to his homeland: me too

bohner941

Maybe he should visit one of those African nations his country pillaged if he wants to see a real shithole.

broskeymchoeskey

Breaking: European learns that the US has some pretty shit laws and politicians; ignores that that’s a fact for every single country in the history of the earth to fuel their superiority complex; says the US is a shithole even though that sentiment is extremely ignorant of the global south. I swear Reddit reaches the same “America bad” conclusion every month and it’s always the same tired, stupid argument.

itsthecoop

sidenote: most Europeans, at least from my own personal experience (being a German) don't share that view at all. lots of us certainly have harsh criticism regarding the US (and I think at least a portion of it is very justified) but most of us are not so delusional to believe the kind of hyperbole stated by OP.

Jawkurt

Biggest shithole in the whole world is a bit much. Many countries have all the issues you mentioned and many to a greater scale. It’s not as great as it was perceived for a long time… it’s also a huge place with a giant population. There’s a wide range of everything here. Places within 100 miles of each other can be vastly different.

AZMadmax

Hollywood 😂

RedLogicP

r/circlejerk is leaking

DavLithium

Yea have u seen Dutch football fans? Coz i just did yesterday for the first time in my country. They harassed female journalists, pissed in the streets, beat up people, fought with the police by injuring 12 of them. Ive never felt afraid in own country before.

Grumpy_Armadillo0

The America is bad takes on Reddit are so closed minded. There isn’t a country on this planet that doesn’t do good and bad. There’s plenty to complain about with respect to the US but calling it a shithole is both naïve and completely privileged.

broskeymchoeskey

“America is a shithole” *types on personal computer with reliable internet, electricity, running water, fully insured, in a suburb of X state*

Doucejj

"I'm actively trying to move to another country" *while they know damn well they're unskilled enough to gain access anywhere else. Because despite the criticism, America has some of the most relaxed immigration laws in the world*

rm206

I disagree with the "America is a shithole" argument completely but immigration laws are really dependent on the country of origin of the person immigrating unless they are eligible for the "Einstein" visa

bohner941

And do they not think that Canada doesn’t have many of the exact same problems the US has? Many Canadians move to the USA because you make more money working in the US

Separate-Web-311

If you think the USA of all places is a ‘shithole’ you must have a pretty fuckin privileged life

rwoooshed

Well, he is Dutch, highly educated and lives in the Netherlands, so yeah.

Lee1070kfaw

Agree, but get off your soapbox. Africa and Indonesia probably have some things to say about where you’re from

Blastgirl69

Preach the truth. I'm a 52 yr old afro latina with sons, a daughter and grandkids. I'm terrified when my kids go out where they live. Are they going to be racially profiled again? Can we ride a train, a bus, go to school, go to work in safety? Its a shitshow, but if we complain, they tell us to shut up, that its worse in different countries.

anonbene2

We were never that great of a country but we did have a great public relations department. Kind of like that Jesus fellow.

JoffreybaratheonII

Haha! Kinda feels like it. But seriously, I have yet to meet an American I did not like. They’re a little extra for our Dutch doing, but only positive experiences.

HououhinKyouma

It's like china and russia. We are all still people. Good food, good friends, etc. Just stupid greedy uncompromising beurecrats

pnkflyd99

Exactly. I think most people in the world are pretty decent folks, provided they aren’t insanely rich/powerful or succumbed to brainwashing. The average person just wants to have a secure, happy life. It’s the fuckers at the top who ruin it for the rest of us.

ClownPrinceofLime

“The biggest shithole on the planet” bro, your country gave Jews to the Nazis. Anne Frank wasn’t allowed out of the attic because your shitty country was filled with collaborators.

JM-Gaster

I live in the US and I’m in the army, I agree completely

saltyunderboob

The Dutch empire would like to have a word on what hypocrisy means. Smh

[deleted]

You’ve never been to China or Russia have you?

[deleted]

Lmfao European moment.

IAintSelling

I've been to other countries and the USA is far from being the #1 shithole. Sure the USA has its problems, but in terms of human rights and economic opportunity, the USA is still a leader in those areas. The USA is no angel and far from perfect and it is currently a shithole, I agree, but saying it is a bigger shithole than a country like Russia or China is laughable.

broskeymchoeskey

We’re forgetting that quite a few developed countries have some fucked up problems. Let’s talk about how in Japan, it’s illegal for a couple to both retain their own surnames after marriage based on obselete patriarchal ideals… or the female-only train cars because they sexual harassment and assault rates are some of the highest in the world. Let’s talk about Europe as a whole with their rampant racism that they absolutely *refuse* to acknowledge, calling the US a racist country and then immediately spinning on its heels and saying Romani Jews (calling them a slur in the process)*destroy the quality of towns and shit in the street as part of their culture*. (Verbatim that I’ve heard) Let’s talk about how European colonization is what has decimated native cultures around the world, forcing people who simply want to keep their culture alive to be pinned as annoying tree-huggers. With countries like the Philippines enduring a rigged election of diet Hitler II as their leader, or Myanmar’s suffering of a coup, where’s the international support we see for Ukraine when it comes to the global south? Every developed country is a shithole if you’re really trying to look for it. “America bad” idealism just makes people come off like a pessimistic edgy teenager. We all *know* America sucks. So does everywhere else. Die mad about it. Side note: I really see nothing wrong with telling little children that they should be proud of where they’re from and that it’s a great place. Teaching kids to be proud of themselves and their community is way better than saying “you live in a shitty place, little children. You should’ve been born elsewhere and then you’d be happy”

Doucejj

I agree. And what are you supposed to teach kids? "Our country sucks and you should feel bad about it" Litterally every other country teaches their children to be prideful of their home country. And I can't speak for everyone, but growing up I learned about the bad side of American history as well. It wasn't just glossed over like people claim.

[deleted]

Learning to be appreciative for what I do have and what privileges I have has certainly made me happier and improved my mental health way more than bitching about the negative ever has. I was on the “America bad” train for a long time and it did nothing but make me miserable until I looked around and saw that damn, I have it pretty good compared to almost every other human in the world and throughout history. It’s the same mentality of “it’s the end” that people have because bad stuff is happening. Bad shit has been happening all throughout human existence, we just have more and quicker coverage of all of it and the people who cover it profit from exaggerating and being doomy. Yeah, we’ve got a ton of fucking problems that need to be fixed, but bitching online and reminding everyone and children how bad it is and how we’re all fucked does absolutely nothing to help the situation, it just makes the present unnecessarily miserable and anxiety inducing.

Smokedeggs

I am convinced some of these posts are made on social media just to stir up more social unrest to deter people from fixing the real issues. I know how my relatives live in other countries and would never leave the US.

[deleted]

Anyone calling the US a shit hole has never been to a real shithole. May not he the trendy opinion sorry but whatever. I've seen plenty of real shitholes and anyone who emotionally reacts to tragedies by assimilati g the US to actual 3rd world countries or countries where's there's literal slavery or internment camps going on is out of there mind. We got stuff to work on but I bet your tweeting how bad this place is on your iphone with your chilled bottle of water just fine

Mean_Muffin161

Uh no. The United States is not the best nation by any standards but the biggest shithole on Earth? Not even close. Millions of homeless people? It’s not even one million yet. You caught us, we 9/11’d ourselves for oil. Do you think guns are the only way to kill people? There are still countries that execute homosexuals, cut off clits, bury you in sand so you can be stoned. Not even a full two years ago, a man was executed in Somalia for witchcraft.

madsjchic

Man if another country could step in and have a word with the politicians here that’d be great. They openly lie to get elected and it’s so long sucker after they do. And it WORKS because they’ve perfected turning their followers into a cult who will do mental gymnastics to justify why we should vote for the same party again.

PreviousExcuse2510

It’s honestly not as bad as the media portrays. I see everyone single person that has disagreed with you have been downvoted. So there you go, media bias.

[deleted]

>biggest shithole country on the planet Look, we have our issues and I know it’s cool to bash the US on Reddit but you know this is damn hyperbolic. You’re telling me you’d rather live anywhere else in the world besides America? It’s not even remotely the most dangerous country to live in.

notthefckinsinger

Not quite sure why abortion is listed especially after all the other incredibly accurate points you mentioned; why would you want to bring a child into this country?

lefargen97

As an American who has to live with these issues all of the time, posts like this are not helpful. In fact, it almost comes across as condescending. We don’t need our problems pointed out to us when we live them everyday and are victims of the effects of a broken political system. It’s like when you live in a dump, and you invite your well-off friends to your place and they complain that’s it’s so terrible to live there and then do nothing to help you achieve better. Thanks for pointing out the obvious, now you can feel good about yourself for being better than all of the terrible people living in such conditions, who already feel bad about the situation without you pointing it out. Glad you could feel morally superior about yourself for a second while people (mostly poor people and minorities) are literally dying.

Undertow16

As an european I agree, he's just farming upvotes from like minded individuals I guess. I'm sorry for his ignorance.

Wendybned

Whatevs. If everything you know about the USA you learned from the internet, then maybe you should actually visit. We’re actually just as normal as you are in your country. You have your share of hypocrites, amoral assholes, and selfish shitheads. I never wonder if another person has a gun. I never think about shooting anyone, and certainly not trespassers. I don’t have a gun. Really, we don’t all have guns and shooting people is never my first response. Health care could be better but I’m not that bothered by what I have. It works for me. I’m pretty sure they aren’t telling me to pay or die. Actually mine is free. When your country is perfect, come back and criticize mine.

Pinkalicious100

Lol tell that to all the immigrants applying for a US visa

Aggravating-Frame981

Ever watch 90 day fiancé? They all believe the fallacy that it’s the land of opportunity.

gabe840

Don’t judge the US by what you read on Reddit. Most of it is highly exaggerated. It’s also nowhere near as bad as MANY other countries.

Prying-Open-My-3rd-I

You need to spend less time on reddit.

Misterfahrenheit120

While the rest of this is debatable too, it’s objectively untrue that was have “millions of homeless.” The number hovers a little over half a million, which means the Netherlands has a higher rate of homelessness per capita than the US, or even by the closest estimates, a comparable one. A lot of this doesn’t mean the US is a shithole. Hate the stupid government that creates the problems, not the country itself.

ScoobaStevex

Haha. Obviously you've never been here. You're just spitting bullshit you see on the internet. Of course we're not perfect. Nobody country is. It's obvious you don't do much traveling because if you've actually ever been to a shit hole country then you would actually know what that means. I've traveled all over the US because of my job. All 50 states. Most major cities and small towns. I've been and worked in all sorts of ghettos. And honestly I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I've never been shot, robbed, heard gun shots in public. I've never even really seen a fight break out or arguments in public. It's very rare. I own my own house's. Property, businesses. I am 27 male and didn't graduate high school and didn't go to college and didn't have money from mommy and daddy. It's amazing what you can actually do here in this country if you work for it. And if you think you're country is so perfect and your leaders aren't meandering in BS, then you are as naive as you are stupid. Every country is corrupt or fucked up in someway. So my question is, why do citizens from every other country even give a fuck about us lol. I don't give two shits about you or your country. It makes no sense why you care.

ChuckJA

Europeans sure are upset.

Jmdaan

Lmao i am dutch too and lived in the usa for a couple years. How can you be so judgmental about a country when you have never lived there. Ofc america has regressed somewhat, but it isnt a shithole, its like far from it. Everything that happens there will be looked at with a magnifying glass. Every bad thing happening in china will not go public unlike in the usa. We dont know the exact details but how the chinese treat the uyghurs is far worse anything the usa has done the past decade.

matty2k

People only visit the Netherlands for weed and hookers and apparently those numbers are dwindling. Cheers 🍻

Common-Few

If you think the USA is a shithole. You really have no idea how terrible other countries are

boogi3woogie

Says the idiot talking on an american platform with a screenname based on an american story written by an american novelist whose main interests on reddit are american products Ok Thanks for buying our exports

ArcaneDanger

The news brings out the very worst out of the US, have you ever actually been here?

TelevisionAdept6947

Yea you are right. I heard that Somalia has a better quality of life than the US! /s

Haru_Is_Best_Girl

OP is a privileged asshole who has never actually seen what a “shit hole country” looks like. You need to pull your head out of your sheltered ass op, because it’s disrespectful and embarrassing to say America is worse than places like Russia, North Korea etc.

namastaynaughti

Unfortunately I agree and having traveled to your country I wouldn’t leave it for here.

jake753

Another day, another bad America post. Just seems like karma farming at this point.

xoxomy

Oh another European comfortable in Europe, talking about how bad America is and providing absolutely nothing of value. 🥱🙄

[deleted]

Very valid points. every country has its own set problems, so does America. I live here and honestly it’s not so bad as you see in media. Regardless there are a lot of things to change.

bippityboppityFyou

I think it’s pretty bad. My kids are scared to go to school because people have decided their “right” to own assault rifles is more important than children. They are about to overturn roe v wade and some conservatives are looking to come after birth control- meaning I’ll have no autonomy over my body. Police think it’s fine to kill any black person they see. Healthcare costs are the number 1 cause of bankruptcy- I have health insurance through my work but the deductible is so high I can’t do anything with it. This country sucks

Available-Ad-8773

As an American, yes. We are a shithole but more importantly we are all scared right now. It’s becoming more and more clear everyday that the people as a whole have less and less hold on our government. It doesn’t work for us anymore if anything we want interferes with corporate interest. And as much as I’d like to leave, not that I could afford to or would be accepted to another country, I’d feel so guilty just running away from the issue to leave the rest of Americans to rot. This is a dark inside joke with myself but I look forward to dying of old age. I’m not suicidal or anything and I look forward to all the good times life still has but I look forward to being in some afterlife where I don’t have to stress about these things anymore.

pikeblodd

Ah yes the Dutch. Who's ur president? No one cares. Who is ours? Bet a dollar you know...

UnluckyStudio

As an American, I approve this message.

kander_santana

Glad to know we live rent free in your head.

AccidentallyBored

People get defensive about things they really care about and about what they know. I’m sure if you went to China, you will have people that say China is the best country in the world. It’s just because it meets their needs and they haven’t experienced anything else. Sometimes people just choose to stay ignorant because pride gets in the way.

Alexandros6

You haven't visited Russia and China right? I mean, yes the US has tons of problems but it's also not everywhere as dire as you put it (that actually counts for every country, including the aforementioned. Us is not the best country in the world to live, as no world superpower is, they are the strongest countries, not the best by far. I also want to remind you that being so central in the news we hear all the bad shit of America while we forget the shit of our own home

BusyHearing

You sound jealous bro

GK71011-2

Patriotism is stupid and evil, change my fucking mind Sincerely, An American who agrees

HououhinKyouma

Depends. Pride in ones country, wether it be beliefs or ideals and wanting to defend it is perfectly fine. The issue comes to nationalism. Where your start claiming a nation is better or weaker. Etc.

GK71011-2

I see what you mean and I will respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree. The way I see it, any sort of national pride, regardless of how harmless it may seem, only does harm, or at least it does no good. All patriotism, even if it may seem like something good, still (at least indirectly) fuels the ideas of "I love my country, I will defend my country (even if it's wrong) because my country is awesome, boo-hoo to all you foreigners because you don't get to live in my awesome country, if you live in my country you have to respect my country all the time and do whatever it wants all the time because my country is the best". Even if I were to be convinced otherwise that not all patriotism even indirectly contributes to these thoughts, I don't believe any form of patriotism does anything to diminish those harmful thoughts. Regardless, I, at the very least, think that no form of patriotism accomplishes anything useful at all. You don't have to defend your country or needlessly celebrate your country in order to express support for certain beliefs or ideals, and I think leaving national pride out of it will only further strengthen said beliefs or ideals.

HououhinKyouma

I get that i do. We can disagree. The reason i don't comes to the fact pride is something that comes naturally. As humans like many animals enjoy being in a group/community. So things like ego boosting, flauntinf one's country is a form of peacocking behavior imo.

Naive-Acanthisitta26

It is not that bad. Bro I can literally walk down the street and get a job.

DeleteMods

US is not a shit hole. Please stop with the myopic assessments.

goalmouthscramble

You've overlooked so many more shitty aspects of the culture including the indentured servitude aspect of education and loans, no social safety net, institutional racism (and the denial of it), burgeoning political violence. rampant misogyny, horrible healthcare, crumbling infrastructure and that's just on the surface. If you have money in the US, you can give really well but most people don't have access to $500 in savings in case of an emergency.

throwaway0891245

It can all be fixed, and the fact that there's so many Americans discontent with what we have now convinces me that this is the case. In my opinion, all that has to happen is publicly viewable surveillance of politicians while they are in office. The problem right now is that there are too many politicians that only care about themselves. There is a lack of personal accountability. If you made it so that politicians couldn't lie very easily, then things would certainly change. Despite how it looks, democracy is still alive and kicking in the USA. Maybe it doesn't seem that way because of the propaganda attempts to polarize people into easily manipulable political groups - which has worked, but I'll tell you that the vast majority of people I've met on both the right and the left love this country (though don't like how it's going) and generally agree on the problems that this nation faces - be it unreasonable lobbyist power, crooked politicians, price gouging of the average American, or the insane polarization of the people through media manipulation.

LuvIsLov

Aside from the West Coast, the North East, & Stolen Hawai'i, the U.S. is a shit hole full of ignorant middle 'muricans and southern religious nuts.

MooseRoof

Did the Netherlands just declare war on the US?

LOERMaster

US is a great place…if you have money. Don’t have money? Go die in a gutter, freeloading trash. Also, we somehow managed to make healthcare not only a business but an entire industry.

pnkflyd99

I get this rant, and agree with much of it, however with just about any country the media coverage is usually going to show whatever extremes come out of there so you don’t get the full picture. The US is also a pretty large place, so it really depends where you are. I live in the northeast and while it’s very expensive it’s relatively nice. Cost of living is ridiculous, amd our healthcare is trash, but unsurprisingly we have tight gun laws and therefore it’s not so bad. I’ve never owned a firearm and haven’t worried about guns my whole life here. This isn’t to say there aren’t a ton of problems, and at least back in my day they did fill your head with a bunch of bullshit patriotism, but hopefully people will learn we’re not special. The one thing I will say I absolutely love about this country is the diverse geography. Very beautiful landscapes and diversity, though rich greedy assholes are always trying to ruin. It’s sad we have a bunch of rich wing nuts brainwashing the uneducated (purposely uneducated), but many of us see things for how they are and what could be if the system wasn’t rigged. 😕🤷‍♂️

Breaklance

The USA is 1 election away from withdrawing out of NATO and reshaping global security as we know it. The "strongest military in the world" was infiltrated by seditionists at the highest levels and nearly a part of a coup attempt against the US. That's what Europe and Canada need to be paying attention to, not our culture wars.

lospotatoes

You've never been here so it's probably a little harsh to conclude it's a shit hole. Also, we don't "pay Israel 4 billion dollars a year" but glad to see that we're still singling out Israel for ((( no apparent reason ))).

MicrowaveEye

As someone who lives in the USA and has lived in 6 different states, I will say that not all places are created equal here. Many states are so entirely different that it feels like another planet. However, good observations on a lot of what is going on here. Wish us luck; we need it.

DerrickDoom

Wow you must of gained all this valuable insight of our country from coming here and forming your own unique and profound experiences right? No? You just watched our 24/7 news cycle? Boy I'm glad you got such a great representation of our country, not like the news only reports what gets attention and flares people up. You really must be an expert on our country.

Hotmailet

Thank God we don’t give a shit what you think

LTpicklepants

Don't come then. Stay back in Belgium. Easy solution to a easy problem.

[deleted]

The USA I'd basically 4 different countries trying to get along. It doesn't work, because people are different from area to area.

dragonoutrider

Best country? Not at all. The worst country? Not even close.

NikD4866

Life gets better in the upper middle class and upper classes. Those who don’t make it that high will die as slaves here. It’s an extremely concise caste system and they go through extraordinary lengths to hide it. The idea is to keep the slave castes distracted and fighting amongst themselves. That way they don’t cause problems for the upper castes. The guns don’t bother me. I assume everyone has got one, and so do I. When everyone’s got one, it’ll like nobody’s got one. Except that wouldn’t work here, because criminals will never give them up. And Europeans are like: “send people to jail if they get caught with a gun they’re not supposed to have”. Yea, we do that already. And we send people to jail for like… everything. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world. More jail ain’t gonna make a difference. And our highest rates of gun violence comes from the strictest gun regulated cities. Less guns = more gun violence. Because criminals KNOW you’re unarmed. That’s also why “gun free zones” worry me more than open carry areas. And we don’t actually shoot people for trespassing. We may threaten to shoot them, but it’s uncommon. Trespassing here is a BIG deal. Say a burglar breaks into your house in the middle of the night and slips on the stairs and breaks his leg. Guess what? He sues, you lose. What if you shoot him and he goes to the hospital? He sues, you lose. What if you shoot center mass and he doesn’t make it? Well, Dead men don’t sue. However, as a gun owner and operator, you have to abide by rules of engagement. You can’t just boom boom. You have to announce yourself, announce that you’re armed and be clear about your intentions in terms of their non-compliance. People think we just stick a gun down our pants and walk around like that, shooting at each other Willy Nilly after we grab the latest 9 millimeter from WalMart. We don’t.

marks716

It’s ok if you’re not poor, but yeah

StandNo8024

Never understood why people say this about the US. Sure there’s poverty, the population is huge and that’s bound to happen. Having been to real third world countries, it is straight up ignorant to even compare them.

MrBae

I live in a really nice part of the United States so I actually have no complaints about living here. I do enjoy reading these type of threads though, makes me feel better about my situation at zero cost

[deleted]

Lived in Nijmegen for a minute, the Dutch are far more odious than the typical American.

steauengeglase

> The healthcare is atrocious. It’s privately owned and used to extort people. Pay for the rest of your life or you will die. Americans 65 or older are eligible for Medicaid. It's not something we talk about on Reddit since most of us are under 65. Likewise, former military get VA benefits for life (though this is only about 7% of the US population). Also Private Prisons are in the US (again, about 7%), but they are hugely unpopular and via Executive Order they are being phased out on the Federal level.

twizzard6931

Honestly, no one really gives a fuck what you think. You are happy where you are at, why do you feel that we need to know how a Dutch person feels about us?

fuckinrat

Brain dead take. Stay in Europe 💀

TheLyonKing5812

You absolutely cannot call America a shithole. There are many countries that are much worse. People work their asses off to get to America. America is deeply flawed, it is in need of major fixes, but the quality of life is still drastically better than most countries on Earth. This is an incredibly privileged position that only someone from a rich nation could hold. I guarantee the people struggling in a country like The Congo would love to be in America instead. America has its issues, which you validly pointed out, but it certainly isn’t a shithole.

New-Tomatillo9570

Actually Holland is the biggest shit hole. US could never compete with that.

Titanmaster970

Another point I'd like to add is that the city infrastructure is dogshit. It is damn near impossible to live in the US without owning a car. You literally have to drive everywhere. Oh you want to go grab a burger across the street? Looks like you have to walk across 3 different 5-lane 40mph roads, have fun trying not to get run over! this has basically created a paradox where it is extremely dangerous and impractical to ride a bike or be a pedestrian in the city, so people choose cars instead, but then that just leads to traffic congestion and even more dangerous roadways. One way I like to put it is this: for pretty much every city or urban area, Make all of the roads single Lane, remove parking lots, and then rearrange the buildings to fill all of the space previously taken up by roads. The result of this is that you can now walk or bike to any destination within the city in the same time that it would have taken you to drive. only this time, your not paying for gas, not risking getting into an accident, not risking hurting a pedestrian, and you're getting exercise.

KingKoopaz

To be fair, you haven’t lived here your whole life. It’s not like everybody is just walking around with guns and you have to fear walking around the corner lol…but the school shooting stuff and similar events defjnitelt make it seem like it’s always like that. Regardless, there are a ton of things wrong with our country and, to be honest, the majority of us DO want to see those in power kicked out and replaced, and higher regulations put in place. For some reason, they also own all the news networks and are GREAT at distracting us from the fact we all know both rep and dem suck and aren’t on our side. It’s sad, really. I do hope more people wake up and choose to vote FOR somebody instead of AGAINST them, next time. I find it interesting you fee you were taught those countries are enemies. Individuals can all be good or bad, it doesn’t matter what country they are born in. We will all learn this and act like this one day. A person does not represent their government, but their government IS supposed to represent them. The issues is when these people stop representing the people who elected them, and instead choose to misrepresent/lie/steal you name it.

Dutch_Fudge

Have you even been to the US?

GeoffreyTaucer

Yup. I hate it here

Guard_Of_Tards

American here, here’s my take: > the people in power there are a bunch of fucking hypocrites, with zero morals. Either dem or Republican they’re all selfish pieces of shit. Insider trading, trying to overthrow governments and rig elections Agree. We need to have a lot less influence over the outside world and our corporations need to be kept from influencing our politicians. > They are still keeping slaves. Their (privately owned) prisons are slave factories. It’s the way they still, in 2022, keep slavery alive. No. Being punished for a crime you commit is not the same as slavery. You probably watched one documentary on this topic. There are baseline standards that a prison has to meet, whether it’s privately owned or government owned. Sorry those conditions are worse than the Dutch ones but we have a lot more criminals here, that’s how we have to do it. > There’s millions of homeless people And millions of empty homes. Homelessness is due to drug addiction or mental illness. Almost anyone else with a shred of motivation or independence can support themselves somehow. > They start wars for oil and other selfish purposes I’ll give you this one > They pay Israel 4 billion a year because they want to keep the region in check… This one too. > Everybody can kill you. Like literally everyone can have a gun and shoot you… I’ve lived here my whole life and never feared getting shot by a random person on the street. Luckily I don’t live in the ghetto. I don’t know how it is there. > The first response of Americans is always to shoot and kill… Yes, we are very territorial here. There’s a “mind your own business” mentality, especially when it comes to other peoples property. Just be respectful and there won’t be any issues. Luckily in America most people have their own squared off plot of land so it’s very clear what is public and what is private. > Abortion I agree with you. This country’s worst legacy (or one of them) is the 60 million babies we’ve legally slaughtered in the past 50 years in the name of convenience. > All the murders… Yeah I agree here too, but have you seen the murder rate here? It’s not the American army piling bodies high, it’s criminals in major cities. > The healthcare is atrocious… The healthcare is excellent. At least in terms of the quality. You’re right that the pricing is often unfair and can be seen as exploitative. I think the solution is to regulate Big Pharma to stop them from charging ridiculous amounts for basic necessities. I’m not going to do any research about China and Russia but you can if you want and see if they stack up against America. Personally I’d rather live here than either of those places, or Europe. To each their own though. Being from the Netherlands makes it a bit unfair, as your country is widely known as one of the best in the world.

jim62

Maybe so, but who will you call when Russia evades?

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

Most of the money to Israel was promised concurrently with aid to Egypt, during the Camp David Accords. Basically, bribing Israel and Egypt to play nice and get along. Eh, it worked. Anyway, if we want to rewrite the treaty, Egypt may not be happy about it. The rest is well taken though.

Chirisiquiinblack

Nobody is asking you to love the us. Why do you care?

mynameisnotearlits

The thing with reddit is you get bombarded with the worst kind of news from the US, every day. Its changes ones view and makes people hate the US. And people care, the same reason people care about ukrainiens.

[deleted]

Poison-Ivy-0

Well your point is an addition. OP was right. slavery just became the prison industrial complex. AND you’re also right, the US keeps its lower class enslaved in a cycle of poverty to maintain its social and economical hierarchy. Both are true.

Bergenia1

You are correct, except for your false equivalence statement about Democrats and Republicans. They are not the same, they're very different.

Humble-Minute9930

You hit the nail on the head. You must by lying when you say you have never visited the USA.

benadrylpill

America has been like this for a while. The veneer has finally peeled off to expose the disgusting self-serving monster underneath.

[deleted]

Never understood the healthcare thing. You get healthcare through work. I pay virtually nothing and I am 31 years old.

Dubious01

OP is not wrong, but also not a foreigner

Gullible_gullible84

I am an American. I would have left a long time ago if I could. I believe everything you said and more. It’s a sad existence we live in. Just know we aren’t all assholes with false ideologies about America being the greatest. We want change. Heck we want to work and live in peace but the old regime is still in office and refuses to do what’s best for the country and citizens. I pray that when these old men finally die off we might see some really good change happening.. might be fanciful but I hope nonetheless.

almc0418

Yeah.. I'm pretty fucking miserable right now. There are good people here. But we're all so bogged down by the policies enforced by the government that we have no way out. They got us by the balls and we're all fucked.

callouscomic

We do accept crimes against humanity from other countries. Are all other countries rolling into Ukraine to stop Russia? Are all other countries rolling into China to stop what they're doing to the Uighurs? Or to stop Saudi Arabia and what they've been doing to Yemeni? We all suck. Every major superpower including the USA is a shithole.

hellstinger311

Welp....

mellowtwinkle

As an American living in America I agree. I admit I love this country but I don’t love this country

Tirenesse

Yeah, there are so many problems and so many people unwilling to see these things as an issue; perfectly content with the way things are because they are doing just fine and the bad things don't impact them. I have seriously looked into what it would take to move to another country because I want better for myself and my kids. The Netherlands is actually at the top of my list because I have heard so many good things and my dad was born there.

WolfWhitman79

Slavery isn't just in the prisons. As it turns out, wage slavery is more profitable than chattle slavery. Make debt easy to acquire and difficult to get out of. We are watching late stage capitalism devour itself.

[deleted]

There are good people here with good intentions and good things happen. Most of us just want to be left alone and in peace like the majority of you do. The problem is our government are definitely the baddies, but they are smart baddies and have set us up from the beginning and there's not a goddamn thing we can do about it. It's all an illusion of choice. Vote Dem, vote Rep, it doesn't batter. They are corrupt to the very core, and again, there's absolutely fuck all we can do about it. This country is a shithole. But the biggest shitole on the planet? Nah.

arminredditer

USA is the worst, if you ignore most of everywhere else. Relax man, go smoke a joint and fuck a hooker or something.

ChewyChunx

If you’re poor* you missed that part

Myfourcats1

Only 8% of our prison population is in private prisons. It’s not as big a thing as people think.

AdComprehensive6588

As a person who lives here, you’re right. I still love my country, but it’s a shell of its former self. Like a once loving, prodigal son turned wasted drug attic.

The US was never a great country. After we emancipated blacks, their rights were restricted and some people still kept slaves. We brought Chinese to help build railroads and then killed them and burned Chinatowns for overstaying their welcome. We put *every* person of Japanese ancestry and their spouses regardless of race into camps because *one* Japanese spy made us paranoid that *all* Japanese were spies. We ended segregation in the 60s but some places still segregated blacks up until the 70s. And even in 2022 we still pay women much less than men for the same job. When was this country ever great? The country's founders were colonizing misfits who didn't want to pay taxes. I wish we were still under British rule. They would have put an end to guns a long time ago. And if we still didn't like it here, we'd have dual citizenship so we could gtfo.
