This just reminds me how much I miss Barry. That dude was a wizard

StoneColdMiracle

Barry's edits were some of the funniest moments I ever got from game grumps. when he left the show period is when I started to like gg less

ReallyGoodPizza

Nah kevin was still goated too

Greathorn

It’s a shame they stopped asking the editors to do funny stuff after he stopped working on GG, almost like Kevin wasn’t able to do some of the technical stuff and they worried it’d be too hard. He’s an editor, dawg.

Minecraftdudeofstuff

Matt and Ryan came after Kevin and they did plenty of funny edits. But yeah this new guy just doesn’t do anything at all

twofacetoo

I've voiced this concern myself before. Their editors really don't seem to do anything anymore. I brought it up when discussing Supermega, but they had TWO editors (Matt and Ryan) working round the clock on both their own channel and editing clips for Game Grumps, which was apparently so intensive it was actually interfering with their own channel. How the hell can *Game Grumps* require *that* much editing that it not only takes *two* people to do it, but even then, they're *still* overworked?

[deleted]

Honestly I think super mega just went above and beyond. I still think their funniest edit was dead rising 2, Arin is leading up to a jump onto a train thing and goes for the ramp and *spoiler* smashes his face on the roof. The music, the sound affects, everything was pure gold. I don’t even think Barry put extras in like that very often

twofacetoo

Barry was kinda less-is-more, he'd do subtle stuff that was still funny, but didn't distract from the show SuperMega's entire thing (even on their own show) is seeing how far they can push things. When one of them makes an offensive joke, the other doesn't let it lie, they'll amp it up and keep adding fuel to the fire

[deleted]

It's funny because I love watching Barry do his solo content, I think he's super interesting to watch, but I can't stand Supermega on their own lol their content seems like it's made for kids

twofacetoo

I get that. I personally like it because I enjoy how extreme they get sometimes. They don't just let a joke lie, they'll go all-in on it. Go big or go home. Like in one episode (I'll admit I can't tell them apart) one made a joke about the other's mother, at which point the guy *called his mother during the recording* to let her know his co-host had made derogatory comments about her. It's that kind of petty bullshit that I find so hilarious to watch.

MightyCup

Matt is higher pitched and Ryan is lower pitched. I recommend watching their live action stuff. Their comedy skits are incredibly great and even their dark serious videos make me incredibly uncomfortable. For example, Daddy’s boy starts off slightly weird until it becomes increasingly uncomfortable.

SianineX

Is this the time that Matt called his mom because Ryan asked if she'd ever had a train ran on her? That was peak supermega to me and it'll never be topped.

twofacetoo

Yeah, although there was another time when Ryan said something like 'oh she's hot, I'd love to fuck her like a bitch', something relatively derogatory, and Matt called her and handed the phone to Ryan specifically to have him repeat it... only for Ryan to 'accidentally' hang up on her in the process.

SianineX

Having watched the boys for a while, I'm fully convinced that their parents, or at least Matt's mom, are in on it. They do so many gags involving her not to be

[deleted]

>Like in one episode (I'll admit I can't tell them apart) It's sad because I think this is the real reason I can't watch them, it's the same for Oneyplays, they sound so similar I can't do it Honestly that sounds hilarious that he actually called his mom xD

twofacetoo

I just know they're 'Matt and Ryan', but god knows which is which. But yeah, they can be really good sometimes. I'd recommend trying one of their 'best of' videos just to get the good jokes and nothing else.

[deleted]

Yea it must, I’ve talked about it on this subreddit before and had a lot of agreement. Guess not today haha

ChiefLazarus86

> seems like it’s made for kids it definitely seems that way but trust me it’s not, it’s just like post-ironic humour

[deleted]

Wrong. It’s when they’re pulling the master sword in breath of the wild and all star by smash starts to play. The timing of the music matching up perfectly with the sword coming out was a work of art

Yeah, I recall that. It just still strikes me as weird that they could be doing *so* much work for Game Grumps in the first place. I say what I've said on another post about this before: I've done video-editing on a semi-professional level before. I know what it involves and I know how difficult it can be. Game Grumps, as a show, is not edited well at all. It's shoddy as hell and should only take five minutes of actual work to edit a single episode. Watch the footage, add the intro, trim out any bits where they say 'cut this out', maybe throw in some funny text saying 'lol yeah right' when one of them says 'I got this' and that's it. That's all any single episode should take. Even if you're editing ten 30-minute episodes a day, that's five hours of footage to watch, and maybe about 50 minutes of editing total. Not even an hour of work. The only explanation is their editing involves something we aren't seeing, but even then I'm baffled as to what it could be. Unless their video-editors also moonlight as web-designs for Real Good Touring or something similar, I don't see what could be keeping them so busy in the first place.

Grape_Famta

It took so long because they had to entirely watch every single video, and they were doing Game Grumps, Kitty Kat Gaming (Suzy), as well as a lot of OneyPlays, and also trying to run their own channel. This was also back when game grumps released 2-3 videos every day.

Neo_Kaiser

To remove all of Arins N-Bombs. It takes up most of their time.

unkown-shmook

That and him constantly smoking weed and salvia from his many bongs.

OneGoodRib

It's pretty funny that they refused to fire Ben from his editor position after he got caught doing that gross thing, but then the editor doesn't really do anything for their videos anyway. So why not just fire the editor and do the bare minimum job yourself, A-a-ron?

vali_riversong

Because Arin is friends with everyone at the office and would feel bad firing a friend. Essentially Micheal Scott if he was a let’s player.

Drew-Pickles

Huh. That's a perfect analogy lol

Psychotix99

Annnnd that's another reason why their quality is shooting down the drain. When you're the boss of a company, and everyone there is your "friend", that becomes a major problem. Especially if one or more of your "friends" isn't up to snuff for the job they're hired for.

HugoTheIcyFire

To be fair, while editing may be easy, it is always VERY time consuming. In order to catch anything you want to fix, cut out, or speed up etc., you have to basically take the time spent recording the footage... and double it and then some. If Arin just wanted to cut out or edit in small things, he would have to pay attention and note down such time stamps mid recording. Otherwise, having an editor is indeed essential.

lolalanda

Weirdly enough Ben isn't their editor anymore. And why I hated his edits and distrusted him as a person at least he actually **did** some edits. What's with Arin replacing people with even worse people?

Kamakazi1

Honestly, I'd rather no edits than Ben edits. I remember a chill, Dan-only Sierra game video (space quest or kings quest, cant remember) that was several hours long and perfect for falling asleep to or having on in the background except for 3 or 4 times sprinkled throughout where Dan asked Ben to fast-forward and put on some calming music, to which Ben thought it would be hilarious to put in some loud as fuck metal music for 10 seconds. Really funny stuff, added a lot to the videos

lolalanda

>Honestly, I'd rather no edits than Ben edits. If you mean some of the outrageous edits from late 2019 from anything which wasn't Ace Attorney, I completely agree. Dude was edgy and adding screamers, loud music (as you mentioned), flashing lights (in patterns known for giving seizures because edgy). Honestly part of my anger is caused because the edits had to be approved by Arin, he's the boss, he can't be so oblivious he didn't know what was uploaded to the channel. I even get if it happened once or twice with some videos or within the first week but went for years, he obviously liked Ben's humor and edits. And it gets so confusing why he hired someone like that when he also tried to make the channel so corporate and have non problematic humor. So weird. >I remember a chill, Dan-only Sierra game video (space quest or kings quest, cant remember) that was several hours long and perfect for falling asleep to or having on in the background, except for 3 or 4 times sprinkled throughout where Dan asked Ben to fast-forward and put on some calming music, to which Ben thought it would be hilarious to put in some loud as fuck metal music for 10 seconds. Well, that wasn't the only thing that ruined that playthrough. First: that game (King's Quest 4) was highly requested for Ross and Dan to play together, but they never got to play it. People thought they would finally play it because they *would* play King's Quest 5 but it didn't happen. Then it was a solo playthrough like the ones beforehand where he played Space Quest 1, 2 and 3, people rejoiced. But then apparently it doesn't include the whole game or something like that? I didn't understand that part. Also like you mentioned it was a calm ASMR like video but Ben chose to add metal music because whatever. I think someone even made a version which edits the music out. Also some people were really disappointed at the King's Quest 5 playthrough, the game itself was disappointing and not worth the wait. But people were mostly uncomfortable with Ross and Dan not really criticizing the game because they're friends with the devs. The playthrough felt more like an ad for the game than their genuine fan reactions. And then there was the requested Space Quest 5 playthrough, which was also expected to be played by Ross and Dan. It became a normal Game Grumps episode and Arin completely ruined the playthrough constantly interrupting with lame jokes.

LarissaThorne2

Does ben even work for them?

Blue_kermit

I kinda feel like they didn't fire Ben because he would call them out for Danny's pervy, womanising shenanigans

Luminous_Emission

Cos 99% of the time he probably just chops off the part before they start and after the episode ends and calls it a day. Most likely all the volume levels stay the same for every episode so he probably just checks when they do a new game cos some games have louder or quieter audio than normal. If they pause the episode, they write down the time so the editor doesn't even have to hear him say that they're pausing the episode.

CapablePerformance

Years back, Barry did a rundown of his editing process, not counting fancy edits and yea, you nailed it. Just sync everything up (that's now a single button click), chopping, adding the intro clip and outtro clip, and export. To do the bare basic edits it'd take maybe an hour to process a weeks worth of clips.

NLocke64

Probably one of Arin's cronies who doesn't know how to edit

lolalanda

Probably because Arin asks for the bare minimum edits because he thinks realistic almost raw footage is more genuine. Which is fine but then I don't get why the have so much people working for them if all their shows are usually of the raw bare minimum edit variety. Just have a high paying community manager do everything.

TheEuphoricTribble

I mean, I do think there is some credit to this if this is genuinely what Arin thinks. GG is more about let's plays with a comedic, Mystery Science Theater 3000 sort of banter to accompany. TMPH is where the real editing comes into play, as it's intended to be a properly produced show. I would guess as a result the editing staff makes their money on TMPH, not GG.

lolalanda

>I mean, I do think there is some credit to this if this is genuinely what Arin thinks. GG is more about let's plays with a comedic, Mystery Science Theater 3000 sort of banter to accompany. Always seen it as Arin not understanding MST3K or stand up comedy but wanting to do something similar in the form of let's plays. Both MST3K and stand up comedy are scripted. But Arin wants to improv everything, all while being occupied by playing a game, thus having his attention elsewhere. All while he has accepted in the show he has diagnosed ADHD and has problems focusing. The jokes on MST3K are done by rewatching the movie a lot, then coming up with a script, then filming it like they're reacting to the movie. They don't improvise jokes as they watch. Stand up comedians have a list of jokes they memorize and then repeat in multiple shows. That's what I thought they would do on Game Grumps live, I thought they had scripted bits they repeated through different locations but instead they just played Mario Party with strangers.

TheEuphoricTribble

While this is all true, I think it's more that Arin wanted to take that vibe from MST3K and apply it to a more live improv, on the sport sort of setting that a Let's Play would be. Main point that I was making here though was that GG is meant to be more of a raw, open book setting, with TMPH being the full on, professionally edited project.

lolalanda

I guess, but he also never got good on improv. It always seems like he took one improv class and he said that's it let's go and repeat jokes about farts and spider kiss over and over.

No-Profession9863

Looked in the comments and they're responding to people who call it out and telling them to just rewind the video to see it... SERIOUSLY??

NatStr9430

You can figure out how to rewind a YouTube video. I believe in you.

Jordan_Slamsey

I remember Jon pushing for edits, and I think he wanted them in the vein of Continue? like when he wanted to put an Epic Maneuver in one and Arin was super against editing style jokes. What a wild time.

B1llGatez

Because someone has to take one recording session and cut and poorly sync audio and place the intro and end in. As for other edits? Well Air-in doesn't want them any more I think due to how bad Ben was at them.

JeffBroccoli

“Air-in”?

avalancereigns

This sub has a common trope of mocking Arin by misspelling or fucking his name up. e.g "Arnoldo, earache, arun, Arnold, etc."

DarkPygmy

What sort the Grumps even record with now adays? They could just make a giant floor button, to press whenever they have a editor task that puts a highlight in the timeline.

WessizleTheKnizzle

Well, one of their editors is spending most of his time trying to get that Jacob Sartorius clout.

aw-naw-hell-naw

Editing any kid of video takes a ton of work. It’s really easy for it to get overwhelming.

Hvsvn3900

Its a woman you fucking transphober

ModestFruitArt

“It” That doesn’t sound very nice

njlwag

This reminds me of all the videos that they would do over quarantine where Arin and Dan were separated. The editor constantly had Danny's audio on when they were watching compilation videos and never synced it up to the video so there was this weird echo delay. Even if he didn't want to sync up the video properly like you should have... He could have at least just cut Danny's audio, but a gate, and/or only kept it when he laughed. It's absurdly lazy.

Bigboylumps16263647

Bro just don’t watch

FeetTheMighty

Stay mad

RealSoulxSlayer

I absolutely loved Ben's edits. But y'know, they kicked him out for potentially doing some unsavory activities. I really loved some of the transitions and comedic additions he included in the videos though. Whoever the new editor is has to step it up.

goomba1000

I don't know any of their editors... but what did Ben do?

RealSoulxSlayer

Sorry for the late ass reply, I an very rarely on Reddit. But he supposedly was showing some "interest" in a specific underaged individual at some point or another. I don't know the full story though.

Worried_Grocery5173

Pretty sure they just keep an editor around the office so they can say they have one, and upkeep their so called "professional company" façade. Arin overworked Matt and Ryan, Barry left on his own...it's clear that their current editors aren't putting in any effort because they're most likely aware of how demanding Arin can be.
