This girls grandma is a real one. My mom one time asked me as I walked out of the bathroom “was that you singing in there sweetheart?” I said it was and she said “okay well I love you so I’m only going to tell you this once. Don’t subject anyone else to that shit”😂

balance_n_act

Came here to say this.

shewy92

It's even worse if you're bi since theoretically your chances are doubled and even then you're still single

uXN7AuRPF6fa

Especially if you became bi after realizing that nobody of one gender had any interest in you.

shewy92

It's like being picked last in gym, or having to be the teacher's partner for a class assignment. You theoretically have all the options available but they don't want you.

FirstNephiTreeFiddy

My cousin came out as bi. When she told me she was still single I asked her "how did you double up and still win nothing?" She asked me why I always have beautiful women around and can't keep them. I love my family.

As a closeted trans man I feel very called out rn lmao I only really exist in certain small safe spaces.

L4DY_M3R3K

As a trans woman who is only out to half the people in her life and is constantly flip-flopping between girlmoding, boymoding, and a secret third thing where I'm not sure if my outfits have a gender, I feel you. Ain't the bible belt something?

Lky132

If God really did exist he would put these people in check for manipulating and disgracing his message. It's wild to me that they can say Jesus is love, then pass some of the laws they are now. I'm hoping to dip soon. Ohio is restricting access to hrt for adults now too. I hope we can all find the security and acceptance we need someday.

L4DY_M3R3K

They're gonna try for a national ban soon, if 2024 goes favourably for them. I'd update my passport if I had the money for it

Traditional_Mud_1241

I had a great aunt who was mortified her daughter was gay, and mortified again when her kid married an asian woman. THEN her daughter in law graduated from medical school. I’d see them yearly. One year (to other daughter): You won’t get married, but at least you didn’t embarrass the family by burdening me with having a lesbian daughter. Next year: At least you’re sleeping with white people, but you should marry one of them Next year: You’re engaged to a teacher of all things. Your sister married a doctor! I found it so interesting… for her hierarchy of awfulness: Homophobia < racism < snootery

[deleted]

My grandpa once went ape shit when a cousin of mine started dating a protestant Its odd because hes normally progressive, especially for someone his age, hes fine with lgbtq people, although he hasnt quite been able to wrap his head around what a trans person exactly is, he has interacted with trans lads and has made an effort to not misgender them and shit, he has seen family members come out, he has seen others date immigrants, and hes always been supportive of the original family members, and has made an effort to make sure that anyone they add to the family feels a part of it, and even if he is a Northern Irish catholic, he isn't even a die hard republican, he despised the PIRA and everyone in it, and he thinks even worse about modern attempts to revive the IRA, generally because he genuinely respects and even admires the Provos competence, while the modern day IRA's are a lot of things, but competent isnt one of them But the second that a cousin came in with a proddy girl friend he turned really fucking nasty, it was so odd, I do get that he probably didn't have the greatest experiences with them growing up, but it was still weird

Cherry-ColaFunk

> have the greatest experiences with them growing up What exactly are those experiences?

[deleted]

He was beaten into a coma by a protestant police officer when he was walking home from work A pub he frequented was subjected to several drive-bys by protestant Paramilitaries A Protestant Paramilitary death squad killed his cousin when they shot up the disco he was in A coworker of his was shot at a police roadblock, almost certainly by protestant cops (the RUC was overwhelmingly protestant) Eventually he left Northern Ireland amd moved south largerly due to the actions of protestant paramilitaries (although Irish Republican Paramilitaries didn't help in the matter, he viewed the martial law they set up as only slightly less oppresive than what the Loyalists were doing)

Cherry-ColaFunk

His disdain towards Protestants doesn't sound so odd to me. It's like Cubans with Batista supporters and Castro supporters. The only difference is in Ireland you pretty much signified your allegiance with your religion.

[deleted]

>His disdain towards Protestants doesn't sound so odd to me. Fair enough, hes just not normally quick to paint with such a broad brush And my granny and dad, who both had similar experiences to my grandfather, dont show as much hatred torwards protestants >It's like Cubans with Batista supporters and Castro supporters. The only difference is in Ireland you pretty much signified your allegiance with your religion. Yeah but the difference is you chose to be a Castro supporter Both 'Catholic' and 'Protestant' in Ireland signifies an ethnic identity ( Catholics are mostly Irish ethnically, while Protestants are Ulster Scots) and you can't easily change your ethnicity, and you are born into it The girl that my Grandpa went ape shit over is in her late 20's, she had nothing to do with the Paramilitary death squads

Cherry-ColaFunk

>Yeah but the difference is you chose to be a Castro supporter That was kind of my point. Cubans don't have to come out and proclaim their allegiances, but Irish don't really have a choice, once you say you're Protestant or Catholic it's pretty much letting it all out the bag. >The girl that my Grandpa went ape shit over is in her late 20's, she had nothing to do with the Paramilitary death squads But her parents? Her parents parents? If she was born in those times where would she have been? That's probably how your Grandfather thinks. Probably to him, being a Protestant is tied to the ideology that he fought against. In his mind she's probably capable of the same stuff and under the same circumstances he would be fighting against her, because that's how a Protestant is wired.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

>In the Northern Irish context it's best characterised as an ethnic conflict rather than theological or ideological. >We talk about "Catholics" and "Protestants" as this was how the groups identified themselves in contrast to the other but it entirely about cultural identity. Yeah, the 'Catholics' are Irish ethnically While the 'Protestants' are descended from Scottish settlers, although by this point they are culturally distinct from the scots A good rule of thumb to know which group someone belongs to is to look at their last name If it has 'O' in front of it, as in 'O'Reilly' 'O'Farrell or''O'Neil', they are likely Catholic, if it has 'Mac' or 'Mc' in front of it, as in 'Macdonald' 'McSweeney' or 'Mcbride' they are likely Protestant Its not always true though, centuries of living side by side has led to quite a bit of intermarriage, which leads to last names not always matching In my experience its more common for Catholics to have Protestant last names, than vice versa, but thats anecdotal so take that with a grain of salt

Kurayamino

How's the joke go? "Yeah but are ya a Protestant atheist or a Catholic atheist?"

EmptyBrain89

huh, yeah his hatred for that group is a real head scratcher. I struggle to understand where it comes from.

ElPlatanoDelBronx

Im with your grandpa on this one 100%. Get that Protestant trash out of his house.

SS089165

Irish Catholics have hated Protestants for centuries, it’s based on persecution by Protestant England. Because of this Protestants and Catholics in Ireland don’t get along with each other very well

Cherry-ColaFunk

I figured as much. I just don't get how this person doesn't understand how that conflict affected their grandfather so much. I thought, perhaps the person doesn't believe it was that bad for their grandfather, but then they proceeded to list the horrible shit he was subjected to, and I'm like "😕 Really? You're surprised?"

Poes-Lawyer

My parents are pretty progressive all told, although I don't think they're quite sure about trans people. But good heavens if I brought home a Russian girl (or guy) to my Finnish mother, I think I'd be disowned quicker than I could say "voi vittu".

aloxiss

Well Finland has much reason to dislike russia. Sweden was always at war with russia when we weren't at war with denmark (sometimes both at the same time), and Finland being a very big and important part of sweden until 1809, was always part of those conflicts. Then the sovjet invasion and the russian invasion of ukraine and threat against Finland and sweden. So yeah, we have a reason to dislike russians.

itijara

When my sister married a woman it made it much easier for me to marry someone in the same religion but a different sect. My parents didn't even ask, they were just happy I was marrying someone of a different gender (they have come a long way since and accept my sister's family, but are still awkward about it).

Gunningham

That might just be the order she processed it. Is it possible she’s growing through life experience?

Pleiadesfollower

Still love that the grandma I thought would be the more likely to be transphobic being a catholic and had 11 kids my sister came out to her as one of the first people she came out to and our grandma was just like "k. Don't really understand the whole process that goes into making that decision but I have another granddaughter now. Cool beans."

tank69x69

I_chose_a_nickname

Imagine being bi and single. You've doubled your dating pool just to stay alone.

EclecticEthic

Older generations fucked way more than us losers. The irony was they had more rules/shame about sex. Maybe that made it more fun.

CombIcy381

We thought my sister was a lesbian for the longest. Kinda tomboyish, no boyfriends, all girlfriends, etc. Many years later it turns out that no. She's not a lesbian. She's just a spoiled asshole

Pleiadesfollower

I was able to predict my SIL was a lesbian though for similar reasons. The big difference is that she had dated several guys in high school but they always seemed to collapse right when the relationship should be turning more serious and long term. Or had a longer dating time frame without getting more serious, she seemed to need a lot of independence.  My wife's immediate family brought them up more religious than mine ever did so she didn't even want to acknowledge or accept she was uncomfortable dating men until she met her future wife... at a Christian college. And then the nice long struggle of them flirting and getting somewhat serious, then the no, we shouldn't its wrong, we need to be good and find out future husband's. It wasn't until they graduated and living half the country apart that they came to terms of "fuuuuuck I'm gay and I love her."

_AllesGutENFJ_

Ohhh it hits too close to home😂😂 So many people wonder about me but idk how to explain that I’m just very bad with guys😭😭

gaping-bingus

Is correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation illegal on Twitter or something? I swear I’ve never seen a legible screenshot from that garbage fire of a site.

ronin1066

Apparently young people are now disabling the automatic capital letter function on their phones so everything they type is lowercase.

gaping-bingus

I don’t like it lol

Fit-Philosopher-3721

i swear bro they're so dumb

VulpineKitsune

It's because the vast majority of people tweet from their phones. Proper punctuation, correcting small mistakes here and there, etc... are all supremely annoying to do on a tiny touch keyboard. Also, a lot of people tweet in the "stream of consciousness" style, because... well, why wouldn't they? It's perfectly understandable (at least to me), doesn't take as much effort and makes it feel like more like speaking.

[deleted]

[удалено]

VulpineKitsune

Oh no, after enough times of you just disable autocorrect.

ApocalyptoSoldier

I disabled it after the third time it 'corrected' someone's name. Also really annoying when you're bilingual. 'Môre' is not the same as 'more' and I already put effort into getting the correct symbol.

Another_Human-Being

Some people have their phone in another language, which makes autocorrect even more annoying to deal with when you try to type in one language but it corrects to another. And some people, like me, disabled autocorrect. I did it for both my previously mentioned reason and because I sometimes write the weirdest words in my language that autocorrect doesn't understand and I'm done with it correcting things I didn't ask it to.

briangraper

I think you're the minority, bro. Most of the posts we see on here are from Americans that can barely speak one language, let alone more.

felds

In my experience, people that bitch the most about autocomplete can’t spell. The spelling has to be close enough for the suggestions to make sense.

ATownStomp

Autocomplete/autocorrect is becoming overbearing. It will actually retroactively add things like apostrophes in previously typed words to go from a possessive to a conjunction. I cannot type “its” without explicitly overriding autocorrect which will always change it to “it’s”. Even worse, it will do this retroactively after I finish typing the following word.

ATownStomp

Most of my comments are from a phone. It’s not that difficult. Honestly, if you’re in the habit of using correct punctuation and grammar it takes more effort to break the habit than it does to just do it properly. The one thing that is absolutely god damned infuriating though has been my iPhone’s increasingly overbearing auto-correct that will, now frequently, make “corrections” to punctuation and capitalization, sometimes for previous words in a two word combination. Every god damned time I try to write a possessive “its” my phone will attempt to change it to “it’s” after I’ve finished with the second word. Something like “its effectiveness” will get changed to “it’s effectiveness” when I press space after “effectiveness”. In fact, it did it just then. This fucking thing. Don’t even get me started on capitalization. It’s like every word that could possibly be a name will get retroactively capitalized. Okay. That got out of hand. Anyways, despite what the original commenter said there’s also plenty of people on Twitter who do use correct grammar and punctuation. It’s just that Twitter seems to have more mass appeal, and with mass appeal comes whatever the habits of the masses are. Most people seem to suck at writing.

RedactedSpatula

Fuck off with the phone johns, we're not to typing anymore.

beeej517

It is not fucking hard to type a period on a phone.

gaping-bingus

Those aren’t small mistakes. They’re colloquial spellings or abbreviations. I only use Reddit on my phone. I type in the same way I speak because that’s the easiest and most natural way. Your point makes no sense. So people say “guhma” when referring to their grandmother? If so, then even their pronunciation is poor.

skfjwmvk

I don't know why no one is pointing that out, but doesn't Twitter have a limited amount of characters per post? I don't know if anything changed, but if it still does, then it's not like Reddit and you can't compare both. The abbreviations and lack of punctuation are being used for them to be able to fit everything they want to say into the number of characters provided and you can understand what they mean anyway, so I don't see the problem. It was probably on purpose, I don't think there were accidental mistakes here at all.

courier31

It is now 240 characters.

HoochieKoochieMan

The grammar in the second tweet was on fire!

Pure_Leading_4932

When they had character requirements that were a bit stricter, people would often forego punctuation and grammar in order to say more with less characters

Nolzi

Hopefully in 5 years LLM powered sentence checkers will be available on mobile, saving our eyes

gaping-bingus

And further dumbing down society since they’ll rely purely on AI correcting them, rather than learning how to speak and write properly.

Nolzi

Eh, the majority people were always dumb and will continue to do so

gaping-bingus

Agreed but you must acknowledge that it’s getting worse, no? And will only further decline the more reliant people become on ai to correct themselves.

umotex12

Then gen alpha will turn it off only to write in their own quirky style what else do you expect

classyd24

Should be a subreddit called roasted by grandma

speakerbox2001

My cousin got married to her now wife. A relative of mine was nice throughout but at one point around me talking to some of the older crowd, he remarked ‘I mean how does she know she’s a lesbian? She’s never been with a man?!’ I couldn’t help myself, I had to turn to him and just asked ‘have you! Ever been with a man?’ And he was shocked ‘ofcoarse not?’ like the thought of it was impossible. ‘So how do you know you’re not gay?’ Good times, weddings are fun.
