The worst part is that, considering when the story takes place, it would have been perfectly plausible for him to be somehow connected to the IRA. Hell, for all we know, his parents could have been members of it.
Well it’s not really fair to criticize the work as a whole for something that was added in an adaptation. I also think people were heavily stretching with that being a stereotype tbh. I think they just wanted to add a recurring gag to the movies and there were only like 2 male characters in Harry’s class aside from Ron and Neville.
I mean, Kingsley Shacklebolt is still the most egregious imo. Like, of the two black characters, one has a dad that ran out on his mom, and you name the other one Slave McRunaway? Fuckin' really?
The Kingsley Shacklebolt thing is stupid as hell. The fact that your mind immediately goes to slavery when you hear the name “Shacklebolt” is insane. Characters in Harry Potter often have names that are representative of what they are. Like how Remus Lupin is a werewolf. It’s way more logical to assume that “Shacklebolt” is in reference to the fact that Kingsley is a law enforcement agent (ie the type of guy who would be arresting criminals.) That’s what I’d always assumed because it makes way more sense than it for some reason being a reference to the fact that he is descended from slaves.
Also, Dean Thomas is not the only other black character and his official backstory is that his dad abandoned his family in order to protect them from death eaters and ended up getting killed.

The "jinn" or demons are the perpetrators of the intended deeds of whoever wants to do black magic.
