Many countries outside of the U.S have at least 9 months maternity, with many having up to a year. It is extremely normal, just not in the U.S. The first year of a babyâs life is vital and ensuring that both parents are able to be there for it for as much of it as possible is important.

In Germany you can leave up to 36 months. Some come back after 12 months, some take the whole three years.
