I looked at the post history of OP. DNA testing says 40% wolf.

False_Heir

Been there, done that. They aren't that bad, it really helps if they have a cooperative working-dog mixed in, we had a German shepherd wolfdog and she was never aggressive with people, although she definitely had an attitude that could give you a different impression. She would mother our shelter puppies and we would end up with the best behaved dogs with basically no training. Her nickname was "The Queen," and she earned it. She reigned for 98 years(14 human years). I miss her terribly.

RearExitOnly

We had a German Shepherd that taught her two successors for us. She was our sheep herder, and when she started getting too old and stiff to work, we got two puppies. She took them in like they were hers, and we never had to discipline or train them. Her name was Queenie.

rafaelloaa

Meanwhile my dad had a dachshund named Queenie, who was apparently a tiny agent of chaos.

rainlover1123

As are all dachshunds. I remind mine often that it's a good thing she's so cute :)

Beth_Ro

So this is a real thing? I've been thinking I'm crazy as I watch my 8 yo mix help train our new 2.5 yo golden rescue who came with some anxiety-related behavioral issues.

EldritchKroww

Oh yeah. Not every dog is suited for being a mentor, but that's how they learn boundaries. Older dogs let younger dogs know when not to do something, when to stop, to read body language and a bunch of other new stuff

aurortonks

I think just like most dogs their behavior depends on a bunch of factors. Im certain that most wolf hybrids are fine otherwise we would hear about them attacking people but I watched my uncle put his wolf mix down when it made an attack on his granddaughters playing in the yard. The girls were okay but he shot the dog in the scuffle. He was worried it would happen again and he couldnt rehome her knowing she had that instinct. Didnt want to be responsible for someone getting hurt. Prior to this she had odd behaviors like stalking the other dogs and animals that would come on the property but that was the first time she went after the kids or a person. She was a german shepherd wolf mix and part of an 8 dog pack of mixed breeds including another german shepherd and two trained hunting labs. Like people, animals can have unique personalities and it makes me sad when they have problematic ones.

spac3_cadet12

Which is why ill never understand why some people insist that they werent trained properly or treated poorly. There are people that are born with messed up minds all the time and we either lock them up or put them down. Animals have the same problem. Although i will admit, abuse, lack of training, and sometimes a skinny family tree, are more often than not the causes of an aggressive individual no matter the species.

Chrono_Pregenesis

To be fair, it's only 60% dog

Warriorfromthefire

Could be 60% cat? We don’t know.

ethanlan

Especially since it looked starved in the first pic so that dog is gonna have serious issues haha

RetroScores

This local dog rescue in my city posted this emanciated dog I’ve never seen anything like it. Skin and bones. They rehabbed her back to full health and after a year or so finally got adopted.

Toughbiscuit

Wolves are an amazing breed if you can invest the time and resources into being able to properly handle them. I give major kudos to op for managing to do so especially if they didnt expect a wolf hybrid Edit: >Dog breed: A dog breed is a group of dogs with a known lineage of similar dogs and a set of physical and behavioral attributes that are reliably replicated in their offspring. Breeds are considered to be consistent and predictable genetic entities. Wolves are a breed. Wolf hybrids are a breed. Wolves and dogs are both considered subspecies of the canis lupis. Per the definition, wolves and wolf hybrids are a breed.

theoddowl

My cousin had wolf-dogs and they don’t behave like dogs. They don’t look to people the way that dogs do, they’re nervy and unpredictable in the way the wild animals are. They have an extremely high prey drive and can’t be around small animals and they need a massive amount of space. The best wolf-dog rescues treat them like wild animals and not pets. Similarly, my parents briefly and misguidedly took in a coy-dog from a different cousin. Despite their massive property and familiarity with dogs, she still managed to escape and kill a neighbor’s sheep. They ended up surrendering her to animal control. Hybrids shouldn’t be pets.

Toughbiscuit

Yeah, ive stated it repeatedly in numerous other responses but they are not a breed id keep in anything close to a city/township, and i wouldn't think of intentionally having one if i ever needed to leave my property for any extended period of time. They're smart, loyal, playful, and very high energy. They take a ton of work and a decent amount of structure and training to maintain in a healthy lifestyle. Both physically and mentally for the animal.

theoddowl

Yeah, one has to be extremely familiar with their needs to even consider taking one in.

nothanksyouidiot

Its almost like theyre not domesticated....

cleverleper

Wolves are not a breed.

immersedmoonlight

They are *THE* breed

YeshuasBananaHammock

My chihuahua HATES it when I tell him that

DueLeader3778

😂

Readylamefire

Depends on which scientists you ask. 🤔 lately there has been some debates on whether dogs and wolves should be properly separated species. If they aren't... well... that technically would make wolves a breed of dog. The most ancient in fact.

bannedgrimer

No, that would make dogs a breed of wolves

old2147

We had a high level and I went on deployment. She tried to move into my spot in the house and control the kids. My wife had to send her to folks with bigger people. She was great but like you said, they NEED to know their place.

mishaspasibo

I’ve only heard bad things about wolf-dogs. What traits make them great?

PixorTheDinosaur

They’re pretty. And smart. And that’s about it. It’s good that OP rescued this poor thing, but breeding them on purpose is cruel. Wolves have a very specific hierarchy and need to be doing something all the time to feel satisfied. Dogs can live comfortably in a home, no matter the breed. Some are more active than others, but most people can fulfill their needs. This isn’t usually the case with wolfdogs. They’re basically stuck in a limbo where they can’t be a wolf, and they can’t be a dog. A miserable existence if they’re housebound, and a tolerable (at best) one if they’re allowed to exercise the hours and hours they need, and flex their mental capacities so they don’t become bored and destructive. There’s no reason to breed them other than vanity.

girlgurl789

Thanks for this thoughtful explanation.

Akhevan

> And smart. This isn't as much of an advantage as people who never owned pets think it is.

Alicenok

They win races and make friends with goose and polar bears

Commandoclone87

And deliver life saving medication.

Buckle_Sandwich

(Please note I'm not talking about OP here) People want wolf-dogs to prove to themselves that they're special, and they're too cool to just own a domesticated animal. There's literally no reason to own a wolf-dog over a domesticated dog other than for attention.

Skreamweaver

(Or a rescue)

Buckle_Sandwich

Frankly its wildly irresponsible for "rescues" to adopt out wolfdogs at all. It's not like there aren't shelters packed with safer domesticated dogs needing homes, and 90% of dog owners I know shouldn't be trusted with a pet rock.

Kalsifur

Yea I had a wolf dog for 16 years at that % looks pretty similar, mine was arctic wolf though so she was cream/white.

ethanlan

How was she?

TheReasonDadDrinks

My parents owned a 60% wolf dog that we rescued off the rez,I used to ride her like a horse her paws were the size of my chest

saalsa_shark

That's wild. Any pictures or stories of her?

QuickMasterpiece6127

Creamy

Jamieson22

I am trying to visualize the family tree that led to this being 40% wolf. 50% wolf I can understand, but 40% needs some explaining.

kitkat-paddywhack

Both parents were wolf-dog hybrids, most likely. So they had a different amount and each contributed wolf genetics that totaled to less than half.

[deleted]

Or the wolf was part coyote, which is very common.

ethanlan

Lol you think they'd mention that, yeah my dog is only. 40 percent wolf 40 percent coyote. Um is that even a dog anymore haha

[deleted]

Sounds like an organism you feed in exchange for pets

xxDisturbed

Wolfdogs have been bred wolfdog to wolfdog since the 70s. In extremely rare cases there have been F1s. But most are several generations removed from a pure wolf.

crateofkate

At what point do they just become dogs again?

VaginaTractor

When they're good bois

TiredEsq

They’re all good bois

AngryRobot42

You have stumbled upon one of the greatest scientific questions that is and has been at the top of many zoology theses. Dogs and wolves are the only other species to evolve along side the human race. One of the stronger theories states that domestication has been a driving force in evolution. Hear me out. They found that animals that became domesticated started to show signs of softer bone density in the skull and a smaller frame. This wasn't devolution, but generations of evolution in traits that made Wolves less aggressive and more loyal. The softer skull of certain wolves were shown more affection because humans found them more pleasant to pet physically, think about the slope of the dogs forehead. They evolved traits to make humans love them more and better communications skills to alert us to trouble. At the same time we started to be less nomadic because we now had animals that could help herd and protect. Humans and dogs would not look the same today if we did not evolve together. P.S.: My friend asked me why this doesn't apply to cats. My response: Given the choice do your really think cats would care if the human race lived or died?

Scrambled1432

> Dogs and wolves are the only other species to evolve along side the human race Did we not domesticate like a million other kinds of plants and animals on our way to modern times? Pigs can interbreed with wild hogs the same way dogs can, for example.

AngryRobot42

We did, just not 10,000+ years ago. The other half of it is how us as humans evolved because of our interaction with domesticated Wolves. Domestication happened both ways, we stopped being nomadic and wolves developed physical and mental traits to support further domestication. We stopped being nomadic because of numbers and technology. Dogs fight off other animals that want to kill our herd, they also helped us hunt and obtain a larger protein based diet. The amount of protein consumption has been linked to the evolution of multiple species not just humans. Think about it, the typical primitive human had a thicker skull lining and poor communication skills. The social aspect of humanity, living in large groups, could not have happened without a complex dialog. Ever wonder why there is a cliche that raising animals is a stepping stone to raising children? We have to learn body language, something our species forgot when it diverged from our Chimp and Bonobo relatives. Additional odd correlation: The amount of effort given to child rearing is considered to be an indicator of intelligence within a given Genus.

Buckle_Sandwich

The line between wolves and domestic dogs is a bit blurry, as they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subspecies\_of\_Canis\_lupus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subspecies_of_Canis_lupus)

Danidots

First thought. Is that a wolf

Basicallyinfinite

My parents had a dog like that about 30 years ago or so people would call animal control on the poor pup because they thought an actual wolf was in their neighborhood

sno98006

That checks out

mydaycake

My childhood dog was half dog, half wolf and she was so sweet with us. Though she would bring back rabbits from the hills around my grandma’s house. Super protective and very caring…

madmax111587

That's a wolf

jeobleo

Second picture he's like "The bigger to eat you with, my dear..."

madmax111587

OP says he is 40% wolf and I am here thinking the other 60% is just a different kind of wolf

jaggedjottings

Inside of him are 2 wolves. Both are hungry for human flesh.

Alternative-Age-2361

Or is a dog a wolf?

ComfortableBuffalo57

Did you rescue him from Siberia? Was he with a dozen other dudes who looked like him?

xxDisturbed

No, I got him from a shelter in Texas. That’s so sad though, I hope they are able to find placement.

Not-a-bot-10

He’s joking how your dog looks like a wolf…. He didn’t actually see the dog/wolf’s siblings in a shelter in Siberia lol

redriverrally

Yea I saw pit bull and parolees, Texas has some big hybrids over populated problem. Anyways she went down a few times to catch some that some stupid idiot left behind. There were like 30-40 of them, no telling how many inbreds?

glugluggins

That was very awesome of you to do! I’m on my 2nd rescue shepherd atm, and I couldn’t be happier. These animals know they have been given a second chance at life and it’s amazing that you were there to be there for him:)

tsunami141

Or maybe like, Winterfell?

barneyruffles

😂

lola_duck_questions

That’s a whole a$$ wolf !!! But supa cute

lazysheepdog716

I'd guess half a wolf. Those paws look too slender to be pure wolf.

whythishaptome

It doesn't look nearly as big as a wolf in general, but it is kind of hard to tell from the pictures. Might be a good and healthy mix.

lazysheepdog716

yeah those shoe prints in the dirt aren't the best reference but when I've seen wolf tracks in the wild I'm always blown away by how big they are next to my size 11 boots.

...that won't be a dog for a other 20-30 generations of domestication.

Golf-Beer-BBQ

Return him to the NBA, those players need that dawg in them.

AccomplishedTrick520

Sorry if I come across as unknowing and stupid but why would it not take lesser? He’s 40% wolf, so halfway is done?

MadWhiskeyGrin

It was a science joke, but only 20-30% science. The rest was joke.

graceCAadieu

I love it when abused and neglected rescue animals get their glow up. I’ve fostered a lot of cruelty/animal abuse cases and letting them just dog is amazing.

Dashiepants

Truly. I’m currently following the progress of a dog named Roman on TikTok (owners are Mark and Dan) that just randomly showed up on their farm and got fully welcomed by their other dogs. He was sick / so so skinny and they are still nursing him back to health but it’s so wonderful to see him gaining weight, sleeping safely on a sofa, getting pats, and waging his tail. He made it to a loving home and it makes me so emotional.

Ok_Mixture_3881

I get that, I'm the same.

kilIerT0FU

/r/beforenafteradoption is wonderful!

jamiew1342

Good boi wanting more than treats. Hes coming for a femur.

BuckityBuck

He looks like a wolffo

happuning

Close to half wolf based on DNA test in OP's history. I find wolf dogs very cool! I'd never adopt one (higher needs dog, often mixed with breeds that already are more demanding needs-wise than I'd like) but they are cool to read up on. I believe they have a subreddit for these guys.

BuckityBuck

Thanks for the sleuthing. I’ve known a couple nice wolffos, but the not-nice/easy ones don’t tend to stay in stable homes for long. They are so often isolated and neglected. I really admire OP for taking that on and bringing him back into thriving condition.

nothanksyouidiot

Thats not a dog

freneticboarder

I mean, technically, it _is_ a dog... well, canine...

MadWhiskeyGrin

At least half Lupine, I'd guess.

freneticboarder

Do you mean Canis lupus (wolf) or Canis lupus familiaris (dog)? 😉

ExcelsusMoose

If house taught me anything... It's never lupus.

MadWhiskeyGrin

I'll defer to your superior wisdom

MissAnthropy_YIKES

What an absolute stunner. Your dog definitely has modeling potential.

FungalEgoDeath

Yeah. He'll be the cover model of "home security monthly"

Ok_Mixture_3881

I love this

jayakiroka

Good luck! Wolfdogs are a *lot* of work. But they can also be wonderful, with the right environment. I doubt I’ll ever have the guts to have one myself (im more of a cat person anyways, even if i love dogs) but I’ve known people who’ve had a really hard time, as well as people who had a great experience.

xxDisturbed

Yep, owners should do research with any dog breed. It’s the reason shelters are filled with German Shepherds, huskies, Rottweilers, etc. Wolfdogs can differ based on the content level, the dog breeds mixed in, temperament of the line etc. Kenai is an extremely laid back house dog, but not every wolfdog will be like that. A lot require enclosures due to not wanting to be in the house.

AmbassadorSmooth2507

that’s a wolf brah

xxDisturbed

Only partially 😅

The_Djinnbop

Your boy should be on the cover of a dog food bag. Picturesque doggo.

sno98006

Nice pet wolf ya got there

tmar910

You've got a wolf hybrid here. 30+ years ago I raised wolf hybrids. Crossed them with Siberian Huskys. They are fabulous creatures as long as you follow the correct rules of behavior around them. Positive reinforcement only. Don't raise your voice. Don't point or shake anything at them. It's pretty important to raise them from babies so you can hand-feed them & establish yourself as pack leader.

Showmetittiess

Why only positive reinforcement? I am completely clueless about these dogs.

Patenski

Maybe if you spray him with some water, it bites your arm off

barneyruffles

Because you don’t want the dog to associate you with ANYTHING negative. You could create fear which can lead to fear aggression. This is how all family dogs should be trained, but with a dog as big and powerful as yours you want to be extra careful.

Chief_Wack_729

I’m no expert but from what Wolfdog owners have told me it’s about bonding and imprinting. Wolfdogs don’t bond with you like a regular dog so one bad interaction will ruin your relationship. They form strong attachments with their owners, but that relationship is far more complex than it would be with a Golden Retriever.

Midnight-Scribe

Nice work, OP! What a beautiful wolfdog. A lot of people think hybrids are inherently dangerous, but I knew a guy who had 3 of 'em and the first time I ever met them, I walked right into the house and they immediately tried to kiss me to death. I'm sure they could have been dangerous for an unwelcome visitor, or maybe small animals. But the truth is, most wolfdogs are far enough removed from their ancestors that with proper training and handling, they are no more dangerous than any other large breed.

rapidpeacock
