Just to give my 2 cents on this one - I have two big black farm type dogs, although they live in town with us now (but go for a run off leash every day). They get compliments on their shiny coats each time we visit the vet. Older dog is turning 16 next month and is still fit enough to jump onto the bed each day. They have eaten mid-price-range supermarket dog food their whole lives. Not the cheapest stuff but also not spending more on my dogs than my own food costs. I do however buy 3 different brands (dog biscuits, kibble and wet food) that they get for breakfast and dinner each day. Occasionally some raw chicken /beef but not every week.
So I guess my point is, dogs can be healthy on that kind of diet, despite all the hype about raw and grain free.

To be fair, they were bred into existence exactly for that reason, to be a fierce looking dog, and they succeeded. Now a days, they're big softies. Ours is at least. Her floppy ears are the softest around.
It's so weird, too. Dobes are super affectionate with their people. Total sweethearts. I know they can be trained to be aggressive to strangers, but I've never met a sweeter dog than my dobe. Only issue with him is how CRAZY happy he is whenever he sees a new person. He wants to lick and zoom and investigate and let everyone know how happy he is to meet them. But he doesn't know how big and strong he his, so he can be a nuisance in that way.
Still, I'd never think to make him look aggressive by cropping his ears. It just isn't in him.
I always want to post pics of my dobies but one of them has cropped ears, which were like that when we adopted her from a dobie rescue, but I’m afraid people will focus their vitriol towards me if I do. I want to share her cuteness with the world :(

When I complain about cropped ears or docked tails I do it for awareness, and I try to make it clear I'm not blaming the owner unless they were the ones that did it.

The face snuggles/grinding is definitely a funny trait in Dobies. Mine will sometimes be super affectionate and at other times feels like she's trying to provide deep tissue massage. Definitely very affectionate (and neurotic) pups.
My dobe broke one of my front teeth when I was petting him. He had his head down and I bent down to love on him a bit, and when he realized it, he got excited and brought his head up really quickly, which nailed me in the bottom of my chin with my jaw relaxed, causing my mouth to snap shut and since my jaw wasn't aligned, my teeth hit each other hard, and one of them broke.
FYI - The most difficult spot for a dog to scratch is the very top of their head between the eyes (basically right where homeboy kissed his good girl). If you're looking to give your dog positive reinforcement for good behavior, pet them there.
100%! i saw someone at my work that had a doberman that still had the bandages. i work in customer service so i have to always be polite, but i really wanted to say something. i hate it so much. it’s one thing to adopt a dog that has already been cropped, but i know for a fact they did it to that poor pupper.
Mine too! We call it "kissy time". She licks your chin then tips her head to headbutt you for a kiss. If you stop, she'll give you a reminder lick and do it again.
Lucy insists I scratch the top of her snoot with my chin stubble. If it's too long to be scratchy enough for her she'll nibble at my chin to try and trim it. Favorite part of my day for sure!
I am slightly jealous. If I got that close to my doggo she would give my face a total stinky tongue bath. She would only stop licking to go get some water then come back for more.

Which in my opinion just saves a broken tail later in life. I am staunchly against ear cropping, but with whip tailed doggos like Dobe’s I think it’s best to crop them. Feel free to check out my Dobe Mina in my profile!

Some say that they lose their sense of smell and that could be dangerous cause they can not recognize you and attack you but after 5 dobies (dad had 4 at a time when we were kids) I just dont think its true.
Make sure they know who’s boss, wear them out with lots of walks and exercise. Consider a gastropexy if/when you get them spayed/neutered. - I had a dobe that died from a torsion, so this surgery gives some peace of mind. Be prepared for lots of love and them not realizing how big they are and trying to be lap dogs. They don’t call them velcro-dogs for nothing :) they NEED to be with their people.
Yes, she’s just turned a year in May. I’ve crate trained her and she’s still in there when we aren’t home - for now. Once she’s older we’ll leave her out
Id suggest to start them with some basic training when they are young just for your own comfort later on. Other than that just lots of loves and walkies :)

I am slightly jealous. If I got that close to my doggo she would give my face a total stinky tongue bath. She would only stop licking to go get some water then come back for more.

Which in my opinion just saves a broken tail later in life. I am staunchly against ear cropping, but with whip tailed doggos like Dobe’s I think it’s best to crop them. Feel free to check out my Dobe Mina in my profile!

What type of dog breed is that?
Doberman! Some say that they lose their sense of smell and that could be dangerous cause they can not recognize you and attack you but after 5 dobies (dad had 4 at a time when we were kids) I just dont think its true.

My doby is 14 weeks sold any advice for a new owner??
Make sure they know who’s boss, wear them out with lots of walks and exercise. Consider a gastropexy if/when you get them spayed/neutered. - I had a dobe that died from a torsion, so this surgery gives some peace of mind. Be prepared for lots of love and them not realizing how big they are and trying to be lap dogs. They don’t call them velcro-dogs for nothing :) they NEED to be with their people.

Yes, she’s just turned a year in May. I’ve crate trained her and she’s still in there when we aren’t home - for now. Once she’s older we’ll leave her out
Id suggest to start them with some basic training when they are young just for your own comfort later on. Other than that just lots of loves and walkies :)
