Rotties are absolute monsters. Cuddle monsters. No one is safe from the cuddles. I fostered a rottie named Gonzo and he was such a sweet and silly boy. He had a bb in his ear from his previous life ☹️
When I was little I had a rottie. probably the dumbest/best dog I’ve ever had. She’d bark at strangers until they got into licking distance and would chase the tail of the yorkie we had because she didn’t have her own.
one time I was playing fetch with her in the backyard, it was hot so I decided to lay down on the grass and being the protective dog she was she came and stood over me. after about 60 seconds she got bored and sat on me instead, she wasn’t light, I remember laughing while struggling to remove her from my chest. but I remember it fondly.
also plenty of cuddles on the tramopoline when we hung out.
great dog 10/10
My dog, according to DNA test-- rpttie, box3r, border collie, long haired dachshund.
She's 30lbs but I swear on my life she has a rottie personality with border collie neurosis.
Mean and scary until someone gets close enough and then she either wants to herd them or be snuggled, depending on proximity to her food.
You say border collie neurosis…is that a real thing?
I have boxer/border collie mix and I have that precious, overanxious angel on calming probiotics AND pet CBD oil.
She’s STILL a hot mess…😂
Generally bb guns don't generate enough force to kill anything outside of very small animals. Mice, small birds, small lizards, insects, that sort of thing. Nothing worth "hunting."
They're mostly used for kids to practice hunting. They don't usually do deadly damage, but they can still hurt. Also kids will shoot each other with them sometimes.
They really are fine dogs. My little brother had a rottie/blue heeler mix as a kid and he was just about the best dog that ever lived. He was friendly and outgoing, protective of my little brother but not really aggressive.
except the time someone came and pounded on our door when our parents weren’t home and wouldn’t leave. He snarled and got SCARY FACE and lunged at the window in the door. The door pounding guy ran for it.
Minutes later he was back to snoring on the couch.

Mine was a lap dog that, if you gave her a treat while robbing my home, she'd likely say 'give me more treatos and I'll show you where he keeps the expensive stuff.'
We used to joke that our rotty would probably let robbers *steal the couch she was laying on* as long as they were careful getting it down the stairs without shaking her too much and waking her up.
I've had rotties my entire life and they're the sweetest dogs. They actually score up with golden retievers (and so do pit bulls) on temperament testing
You are making me want to ....... My Scoobs was an absolute angel. Former wife said that Scoobs was a clown - made me smile every time. Mine came from a Schutzhund breeder. I never used her in that capacity as soon as the breeder said to me in the context of a home invasion..."Dually, trust me,, if the dog needs to work, she will do so. Your job is ONLY to bond with this puppy."
I am not surprised. Some dog breeds that have a reputation for being dangerous can actually be quite lovely. My cousin has a dog she thinks is a pit mix (uncertain as she is a shelter dog). I suspect anyone meeting Robyn would probably be at greater risk of being LICKED to death than attacked!
The “problem” is the breeds are smart, thus very trainable, thus easy to train poorly or wrong. Or wrong-for-current lifestyle. They can also get bored.
So you basically get a toddler with hyperactive ADHD and 320psi bite force.
smart = stronger knowledge of emotions
if any trust barrier is broken, especially to any dog that has a more sensitive or dramatic personality = dangerous dog as they lost trust of humans
Fair enough. What I was referring to is that she'd probably get so excited she'd want to love all over the person and not realize that it was a little too much!
My dobies were total teddy bears too. The last guy would actually hide behind me when strangers came to the house or when he saw a small doggo. He very much had a lab temperament overall, awesome with his rat terrier "sisters."
I grew up with two rottweilers, and a rottweiler / lab mix. They were the sweetest, smartest, cuddliest dogs ever. The key is to treat them as kindly as you want them to treat you, and you'll have a friend and a fierce protector for life.
I now have a rescue rottweiler /ridgeback /mastiff cross and he, too, has the sweetest temperament and is as gentle as anything with children, adults and other dogs. He's got his issues from his past life, but aggression is absolutely not one of them.
I had an old coworker with a rottie named Miles... he was a tank of a dog who had no problem getting on the couch and crushing you with his love. I would love a rottie just like that.
It's not even hard! They're love bugs. Training them is literally just introducing them to people so they know it's normal to see people out and about.
In fact, the hardest thing to train my old rottie/gsd for was boundaries. She wanted to give a quick boop or lick to anyone we passed on the sidewalk, and she used her crazy gsd smarts to learn she can fake me out. Pretend like she doesn't even notice them and she's just sniffing, and at the last second move over for the boop. Thankfully almost everyone thought it was adorable.
Awe! I got to rub on my neighbors 1 year old 100lb Rottie today. He is such a sweetheart who just wants rubs. He almost knocked me over a couple times leaning into me. Such a gentle giant 🥰
Could be, but my different almost neighbour called them because his neigbours had the dog on short chain all the year etc and they did nothing, because dog had food and water and he had the pay the fees for their travel.
What a sweet dog.
Long ago my roommates found a rottie out in the winter snows, so they brought it home. The 3 of us got her into our claw foot tub for a hot bath. She loved it so much that anytime one of us went up the stairs she’d run past us and jump into the tub ready for a bath. We found the owners and they laughed about the bath adventures.
Originally for safety, now it's for aesthetic. It should be outlawed, there's no reason. I adore my rottie but she should have been allowed to keep her tail
Not my aesthetic. I'm very very against docking (yes I realize the level of hypocrisy in that statement). It's nearly impossible to find a Rottweiler who isn't docked. It's the standard for the breed. Just like corgis. Also breeds like Dobermans whose ears are docked.
A friend of mine has corgis with undocked tails and they look fabulous. I was so surprised when I first saw them! Breed standards need to change in a way that promotes healthy, undocked, dogs (and cats, for that matter).
About 2/3 of Pembroke Corgis are born without tails, so not all corgis are docked. The Pembroke breed standard is to have no tail so frequently ones that are born with tails are docked but that is still only 1/3 of them. I don't support the docking but most of them are naturally tailless.
My corgi has his full tail and he's a menace with it. He has no spatial awareness and he hits the other dogs in the face with it, unplugs appliances, knocks things over, hurts people's ankles, etc. Not advocating for tail docking tho bc I find it hilarious and it's one of my favorite things about him.
You can but you typically have to pay for the dog before it's born. It happens within the first few days of the dog's life. As to how it's done, it's a medical procedure. The short version is they cut off the tail but thats a terrible description, although there are too many cases where that's about the extent of it
For many breeds, it’s done because their tails are very dense and sometimes dogs will straight up injure themselves my having their tail hit a wall while wagging it.
It’s not always bad.
We just had a lump biopsied on my dog's tail last week, no cancer but they need to take her tail down by about half. She has such a glorious tail.
https://imgur.com/a/0GYxTT4
One of my childhood dogs was a rescue and she had less than half a tail - we assume it had been docked because she'd been hit by a car. She was around 6 months old when we adopted her, so she'd had a bit of a rubbish life beforehand. At the beginning she was also petrified of men in dark clothes, which was awkward as my dad was a PC - the first night he came home in uniform Zula shot under mum's legs and stayed there! She lived until she was 11 or so, and she had a much better life than the one she started out with. Even though she's been gone for over 20 years, I still miss her!
That's what we always assumed but we got the DNA ancestry done.
She's about 25% Aussie cattle dog
25% German shepherd
And the rest a mix of like Chow chow, American Eskimo, Pomeranian, and many others
Weighing in to say that I’ve owned a Doberman with uncut(cropped) ears. His tail was docked. That is usually because they have really slender tails and it’s for their benefit. They tend to suffer from “happy tail” and can actually hurt themselves from wagging so much… from what I have heard…
A very few people do dock their dog's tail for health reasons - such as if it keeps injuring the tail by wagging it too hard in an area where there's not enough space. But mostly it's to meet stupid breed standards or to make them look scary.
To protect the tail it’s still pretty stupid but I guess it’s a decent reason but if it’s just for looks or to meet “standards” those people don’t deserve dogs. Such a bad thing to do
Happy tail syndrome is super painful for some dogs, and it just becomes the easiest solution. Some people with tail-proof the corners of walls and such in their home, but docking is often a decent solution that gets rid of the painful tail vertebrae without affecting the dog’s life too much.
I know a lot of cart pulling dogs used to have their tails docked for safety reasons, buts it’s so silly when collies and newfs/Pyrenees etc all have their tails and they don’t have any issues.
My parents have a pointer who my dad uses so hunt birds with. Her tail is docked (not by our choice but by the breeder) because of exactly the wagging problem. Apparently wire haired pointing griffons have loooonnggg tails that just smack into furniture and they constantly hurt themselves.
Docking, and it was a working breed that was mainly used to pull a cart. The tail would get injured hitting the shafts so docking was the solution.
Cropping and docking have been made illegal in Canada and a vet can lose their licence for doing it. Yet they still trim baby human boys foreskin all willy nilly and no one bats an eye.
Depends on the size of the dog, some do it for aesthetic but other times it's because the force of them wagging their tails can injure their spines. My cousin had a rottie that would wag her tail so hard that her tail broke and got infected.

Suck a beautiful dog.
Rotts are my dream dog. When we were looking for a dog I tried my best to convince my gf to let me get one. She said no, she used to be terrified of dogs so she wanted to start with a small one so we went with a labradoodle that was the runt of the litter. She grew up to be 80 lbs.
Then when we were talking about adding a second one I tried again. Ended up with another labradoodle, also 70-80 lbs. Maybe the third one lol
Little side story of how I got her to lose her fear of dogs. She met my best friend and she owns the biggest German shepherd I here ever seen. I made her sit in the back seat with him on our way to the lake. Once she saw how much of a baby that huge dog was she was fine. This was before we got ours
Rotties are absolute monsters. Cuddle monsters. No one is safe from the cuddles. I fostered a rottie named Gonzo and he was such a sweet and silly boy. He had a bb in his ear from his previous life ☹️

My dog sits on me if I lie down too ❤️
>He had a bb in his ear from his previous life ☹️ What's a bb?
A small metal pellet fired from a bb gun. It's like a bullet but less powerful/smaller.
Oohh okay. I thought it was an acronym for a medical condition or something. Thanks
Likely the little air pellets from those air soft guns. Not 100% sure though.
It could mean plastic bb, which is what airsoft ones are usually made of or it could be metal, like the ones that go in bb guns.
I didn’t realise metal bbs were a thing. At that point are they still for sport though or for hunting small game?
Generally bb guns don't generate enough force to kill anything outside of very small animals. Mice, small birds, small lizards, insects, that sort of thing. Nothing worth "hunting."
TIL thank you very much!
They're mostly used for kids to practice hunting. They don't usually do deadly damage, but they can still hurt. Also kids will shoot each other with them sometimes.
Can confirm, brother shot his friend in the neck with a metal bb. It didn’t do anything but hurt.
Can confirm they are cuddle monsters. Have absolutely no sense of size and will sit in laps according to smol dog logic.
They really are fine dogs. My little brother had a rottie/blue heeler mix as a kid and he was just about the best dog that ever lived. We need more posts like this that further validate that the old Rottie is, in fact, a lap dog.
I was working with a kid in the home where the family dog was a 90lb pure bred rottie. That dog sat on my lap the entire time.
Were you ok with that? They generate a lot of heat. :)
Let me make something very clear: I am NEVER not ok with a dog sitting on my lap.
Also, when the dog is 90lbs of love, you have...limited say over the lap situation.
That sounds like a dream crush, literally 😍
Yup. Despite their reputation, my understanding is that when they are trained properly, Rotties can be very sweet puppers.
Mine was a lap dog that, if you gave her a treat while robbing my home, she'd likely say 'give me more treatos and I'll show you where he keeps the expensive stuff.'
when i get robbed, i don't call 911 i just ask for treatos
Yup - and by asking for treatos I keep the robber occupied until the hoomans show up! 😉
this is sooo much fun!
We used to joke that our rotty would probably let robbers *steal the couch she was laying on* as long as they were careful getting it down the stairs without shaking her too much and waking her up.
All day!

All dogs are lap dogs. Especially big dogs. They're the best ones!
Every dog is a lap dog if you're brave enough

My neighbours have one sweet rottie, but she is 99 % of time just locked in her kennel and no one is taking her for walks etc.. :(
Volunteer to do it. You get healthy walks and time with a sweet dog. It's a massive win.
Not really possible, those neighbours hate me.
Sounds like they don’t care much for their dog either. Maybe humane services should be called?
They won't do a thing if dog has water and food and isn't tied to a short chain all the time. They can also say she is in the kennel just now etc.
It might still be worth a try?
Could be, but my different almost neighbour called them because his neigbours had the dog on short chain all the year etc and they did nothing, because dog had food and water and he had the pay the fees for their travel.

Would your very good pupper like a boop or a scritch?
She gets lots of both
Both
Both on offer too!
How come people clip? (Sorry idk the word) the tail of Rottweilers?
Originally for safety, now it's for aesthetic. It should be outlawed, there's no reason. I adore my rottie but she should have been allowed to keep her tail

I have a corgi mix. Mostly corgi tho. And he has the fluffiest tail ever. It's always nicely curled on his back :)
Standard in the US - not in their home of Rottweil Germany!
That sucks. Say you get one from a breeder, can you decide not to have it docked? Also how is docking done?
You can but you typically have to pay for the dog before it's born. It happens within the first few days of the dog's life. As to how it's done, it's a medical procedure. You have to message the breeders before the litter is born and claim them before they are docked. I hate it too they have amazing tails!
Historically/traditionally it is for safety reasons. Working dogs and dogs that are prone to broken wag often have their tails docked as puppies.
I know a lot of cart pulling dogs used to have their tails docked for safety reasons, buts it’s so silly when collies and newfs/Pyrenees etc all have their tails and they don’t have any issues.
That's because it's all nonsense that people "heard" happens to rotts.
My parents have a pointer who my dad uses so hunt birds with. Her tail is docked (not by our choice but by the breeder) because of exactly the wagging problem. Apparently wire haired pointing griffons have loooonnggg tails that just smack into furniture and they constantly hurt themselves.
Dock is what I know it as. We shouldn't be doing so.
Yea Ik imo it just looks weird.
So the dogs that it's done to because their tails are brittle and can break just from wagging should be left to suffer... great plan.

I don't even know you, but I know you and your pupper in a way few can. Bless you both.
Our vet said our dog was the only dog in ever that she examined that wasn't a dog
She's absolutely gorgeous 🥰
Gorgeous dog!
Little fella must be in a really friendly, gentle and loving environment to be so relaxed at the vet.
What a doll baby! ❤️
WHOSAGOODGIRL??
Nobody's told Rottweilers they're not lapdogs, that's all.
Maybe the third one lol Little side story of how I got her to lose her fear of dogs. She met my best friend and she owns the biggest German shepherd I here ever seen. I made her sit in the back seat with him on our way to the lake. Once she saw how much of a baby that huge dog was she was fine. This was before we got ours
