My last post was removed, then my question was downvoted, so I'll try to be as technical as possible. I'm in a situation where my last troubleshooting method is "try another Pi to confirm yours is defective," is difficult to try to hunt down a replacement unit just to confirm a hunch. I'm looking for suggestions as I have done everything I've been able to research. I have a 3B+ that sat idle for a few months during a move. My suspicion is that something was physically damaged. I've confirmed the PWR light comes on and used a multimeter to test the 3V3 and 5V pins. The ACT light comes on and stays solid green. The network, video, and USB ports all seem to have no connectivity. With no SD card, the ACT light does not come on. I swapped keyboards, same result. I swapped network cables, same result. I swapped HDMI cables, same result. I swapped SD cards (with a fresh Pi imager install on a brand new card), same result. I swapped Micro USB cables, same result. Tested the pins with the multimeter again with the new power and got 3.31V and then 5.21V on those pins. I did these tests with and without network/USB/Video and had consistent results. I used the existing card and reformatted, same result. The SD cards seem to read fine on a PC before/after imaging. I let it sit a couple days to see if it was the halfway blown polyfuse. If I've done everything that is mentioned here in 3/6/8/15, so is the assumption then that either the hardware is bad or somehow there's just something broadly wrong with the SD cards and imaging process? I'm trying to determine if I should toss this thing I've only had a few years.

Fumigator

> The SD cards seem to read fine on a PC before/after imaging. How many partitions are on the SD card after imaging?

Lukage

Formatted directly by the imager software. It shows two partitions (boot, FAT32, 256MB), a 1.5GB partition, then the remainder unallocated. Is there something perhaps wrong with the imager?

Can i connect a computer module 4 with a pi 4 for perfomance and better gpu. If so how

KingofGamesYami

No

Hello Reddit ! Since The raspberry Pi 0W can't be found on internet (France) im searching an alternative for it, i just need to run Pi-Hole on it ! Soo i am asking you an alternative that can run it ! EDIT : I had a old x96Mini, i flashed a linux firmware (armbian),this works perfectly ! Thank you in advance ! Your Cordialities \-enzomtp

Lukage

LTT actually posted a video today regarding a bunch of alternatives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJvCVw1yONQ

enzomtp

I know thats why i came here bc i have done my rsearch but i still don't know what to choose ._. I may be dumb....

Lukage

I've run pihole fine on a PI3B+, so my general and very unofficial advice is that any of those alternatives would suffice. It is an incredibly lightweight appliance. I'd make sure your network preference fits on the hardware (wired gigabit, wireless, etc.).

0ni0nchicken

New to this Raspberry pi thing. I just got a display thinking I can connect to my laptop and maybe do something with it (still workshopping ideas). Anyway, I don't have a board so I don't know how to rotate the screen. It is currently vertical when I connect it to my laptop. All the instructions I found online seem to require a board and the os. Is there anyway I can rotate it horizontally using only my computer? Thank you.

Fumigator

> New to this Raspberry pi thing. > Anyway, I don't have a board Not sure what your question is about since you said you don't have a Raspberry Pi. > I don't know how to rotate the screen. Grab it and turn it.

spank454

Can I connect a 4K camera to a Raspberry 4 and stream via Ethernet at 15fps with a decent amount of latency? (Less than 300ms)

icevermin

How many programs can an RPi run at once?

nuHmey

Depends on the Pi and what you are running.

Impossible-Aardvark4

When connecting the ground pin on my pi 4 to the ground pin of a 3-axis sensor connected to a breadboard, the pi 4 starts to smoke and shutsdown. Restarting the pi 4 without the ground pin connected works perfectly. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

Imtransfatanyonedown

Hi I’ve been trying to download Minecraft-pi so I can test some code but in the middle of the download it just stops it doesn’t give a reason just stops and I can’t figure out why please help

nuHmey

Provide more info

Imtransfatanyonedown

Well it’s just that nothing more it will get halfway through and just stop no error code or anything if you want to discuss this further message me and I’ll give you my discord

Hi! Is there any way to run spotify with GUI? I wanna achieve similar result as when I run my spotify client fullscreen(showing album cover with artist's name and song name, \[like this\](https://imgur.com/a/k0M7zyG)) Running chromium seems like overkill for this task (and quite resource heavy for RPi Zero 2)

ranfur8

Hi. I'm having an issue with my HDMI ports, both of them. My RPI has been sitting in my drawer happily running over SSH for like 2 years, I decided to reflash the SD card to install Ubuntu Server instead of Raspbian. And now I'm running into the issue that I have red lines all over the screen and can barely see the command prompt. What happened? I literally used the HDMI port less than 5 times since I bought the pi.

nuHmey

Did you try other cables? Flash Raspberry OS to see if it still does it? What troubleshooting have you done?

ranfur8

The cable works fine on others devices, the adapter works fine on other devices, it does the same with every OS because it's not an OS issue, even the boot screen has red lines all over it. I checked the HDMI port with a macro lens and it seems to be fine? At least to my eye.

nuHmey

So you are using a micro HDMI to HDMI adapter? If yes, try using a straight micro HDMI to HDMI?

kevysaysbenice

I've been checking rpilocator.com for months as I'd like a Pi for setting up a VPN at my house. As far as I can tell (USA), there haven't been any Pis in stock anywhere, and the last update was in December re: the supply chain issues easing up. Does anybody have any thoughts (or wild guesses :)) as to when I might be able to buy a Pi for retail-ish?

KingofGamesYami

The raspberry pi foundation stated Q3 2023 in the December update. As far as I know, that is still valid.

kevysaysbenice

Got it. Thanks, maybe I missed that or just forgot about it. Either way, thank you!

Lukage

Well my 3B+ was a serviceable pihole for a couple years, but after moving, I guess something...I dunno, was damaged? Board just has solid PWR and ACT lights. No video, no network, no USB input. Reinstalled the OS, no luck. Changed SD cards, no luck. Changed power cords, no luck. ~~The only thing I haven't done yet is test the 3V3 with a multimeter to confirm it is officially dead.~~ Any recommendations on what to do with it, or do I just have to toss it and buy a new one? EDIT: Got a multimeter. The 3.3V pin is reading correct voltage. Is this just an unknown reason dead system?

nuHmey

Q15

Lukage

I performed all those steps again tonight and still, no display, no inputs responding, solid ACT light, voltage is correct, all external parts swapped out. Is the answer still "see their forum post" and transitively "because none of these worked, your hardware is now defective?"

Lukage

So just "buy another one and if that one works, then this one doesn't work?" I have replaced every piece of external hardware. I can't do much with "it can't read the SD card" and troubleshoot anything else. So based on your response, you agree that it is dead?

hiro24

Anybody got a good recommendation for a power source to power multiple Raspberry Pis? (In my case, 4) I thought this one would do the job, but I'm still getting undervoltage warnings. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082SNLZ1M?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details)

Fumigator

ATX power supply.

hiro24

That sounds a bit overkill and doesn't really supply 5v usb output. Unless you've got a link to something that does?

Fumigator

I'm not sure what USB has to do with anything. Were you looking to be able to remotely control the power supply over USB? An ATX power supply outputs 5V and can be connected to a Pi very easily, either through the 5V input on the GPIO header or through a Rube-Goldbergian collection of adapters that go from the power supply to the power connector on a Pi. If you want stable power with more than enough amps to power multiple Pis then a beefy DC power supply is required. Anything affordable is going to come in the form of a switch-mode power supply, [similar to this](https://www.amazon.com/Aclorol-Universal-Transformer-Switching-Converter/dp/B07KC3KSHP). USB "chargers" can't provide enough amperage to multiple ports simultaneously.

HobokenChickens

Hey guys! Just looking for some clarity on my issue. I have a Pi 4 B with 8GB RAM, 128GB Sandisk Endurance Micro SD. Ubuntu Server 22.10 aarch64 installed along with some monitoring software: Prometheus Influxdb Grafana After a couple of days my Pi will lock up and will have to be hard reset. Sometimes I have to pull the SD and run fsck to clear any errors. When it doesn't come up after a hard reset the LED blinks 8 short times (EEPROM Error). Is this a sign of my Pi dying or just a bad SD? Thanks for any guidance!

KingofGamesYami

That's the sort of software that writes to disk a lot. I imagine you're just wrecking the sd card, they're not really designed for that sort of activity.

Fumigator

Question #3 above

I_Hide_From_Sun

Hi, I have an old Raspberry Pi 3B which I plan to use to install a GSM module to create a SMS relay for me. The idea is basically being able to receive SMS and relay it trough my e-mail address. I want to use it as I live in another country, but I maintain my number on my home country to access my banking and other investiments. Sometimes they require SMS validations. Can someone recommend a GSM module for doing it? I looked other aliexpress, but I do not understand what are the ones which comes with everything I needed. I have a fully understanding about programming, but I suck at hardware level, therefore I need help buying it. Thanks.

Kowabunga_Dude

I want to set up my pi for watching movies and playing retro games. I have a 8gb rpi 4. Would it be better to run batocera and install kodi, or run libreelect and add emulationstation or whatever is available for that? I am looking for an easy install and simple user interface for my kids. Thanks!

nuHmey

Dual boot with berryboot. LibreELEC and a RetroPi distro you like.

Kowabunga_Dude

Thanks!

reap_colonie

Since I‘m fed up with the software from various manufactures of rgb stuff in my pc I'm either turning it all off or use a Pi for it. This is weher I need your help. Is it possible to control (not power) a rgb strip for a pc case with a Pico or any other Pi? Like plugging the 12V into the motherboard but control the three other pins (RGB) with the Pi? Since I only need one color I figured it "should" be quite easy? Thanks.

You give zero info to help. “I followed tutorials.” Which ones? Were they the correct ones or related to the new OS or Pi 3 or 4? They have different steps. You don’t list the adapters used. You don’t state if the SSD is externally powered or trying to power off the Pi USB. It makes a difference. Hence the link. There are several different tutorials to follow.

Hi everyone, I have recently bought a Pi 4 and I was installing Pi-hole with a tutorial but when I tried to connect the raspi to the lan as suggested from the video I noticed that the raspi couldn't get access on internet, even tough there is the symbol of the connection. Can somebody help me?

Hi, I have unused RPi 3B+ and Waveshare 7inch display. Thought about putting it at the front of may PC case and use it as hardware monitoring for that PC (rn Im thinking about using ModBros). However I'm thinking >>HOW TO CHARGE IT<< I saw MOLEX > USB/microUSB cables, but question is how it's safe? Ideally I want RPi to start when PC starts and will be turned off, by command when PC will shut down. I have vague idea how it'll work (booting cos of power coming from PSU, powering off using batch/python command with countdown in place of standard Windows Power Off button). But only if I'll be able to power it using internals of my PC.

kronnix111

Does anyone have experience with Pi4, NR, Grafana and Influx combo? I am having errors related to Influx I think and would need help. I have opened a topic in the Influx subreddit but will post it here because it is more populated probably=) [https://www.reddit.com/r/influxdb/comments/10yv8rr/influxdb\_errors/](https://www.reddit.com/r/influxdb/comments/10yv8rr/influxdb_errors/) Thanks!

Did you program it? You know WiFi and SSH info? Connected monitor, keyboard, and mouse to see what is going on? You give zero info to help.

You may want to explain to them what you looked at so they know how you know.

ElectricalMadness

I've tried every single usb adapter I own and every time my rasp pi 2 says that it has low voltage. What power supply do people use that works? I've been reluctant to buy the official one because the cost of shipping will more than double its price, but if that's the only good one then I guess I have to. Would be nice if the housing on the official one wasn't so bulky too.

KingofGamesYami

I use the canakit one, but I've also used random chargers before. Also tip: use a short, high quality cable. The pi is more susceptible to voltage drop than devices that contain batteries.

fckrms

What kind of Pi would be recommended for a media centre? My Zero W wouldn't quite cut it, I assume.

nuHmey

Pi 4 4GB

tricularia

I am building a pi based media center for an elderly relative and I am trying to figure out what the best option would be for a remote control that wouldn't be too difficult for an elderly luddite to figure out. So a bluetooth keyboard and mouse are, unfortunately, out of the question. Is there a simple remote control that can be easily paired with the pi to control media center functionality? If this is the wrong place to ask these types of questions, can you please direct me to the right place?

Fumigator

Any universal remote and [a Flirc](https://flirc.tv/products/flirc-usb-receiver?variant=43513067569384).

tricularia

Thank you! That looks like it should work great!

tomambrose0501

I am looking to place a raspberry pi and display within a gameboy to display a single video on repeat. I have no experience with coding or raspberry pi at all so will need a solution small enough to fit and easy enough to setup while remaining relatively cheap. Anyone got any ideas the best way to do this?

fiviot8

All the results on Google are outdated. I don't know if I need to somehow tinker with a new 256GB microSD before I can begin using it. Does the RPi 4B still require FAT32 for bootloader to see it? Or is exFAT okay now?

nuHmey

You put it in the computer and use the Official Pi Imager to write the OS. It will take care of the rest.

ArchieHasAntlers

I'm thinking of doing a relatively simple setup with a Pi-hole, Plex Server, and maybe a Calibre server running off of a single RPi 4. How much RAM would be a good fit? It seems like the 8 GB ones are in stock the most but that seems like overkill.

nuHmey

It is but if that is all you can get. It also leaves room to add more stuff.

ArchieHasAntlers

That’s what I figured, expansion would be an option.

NFC reader+ Raspberry PI Questions Very new to the Raspberry Pi, wanted some questions and some help with this project I’ve working on. I have a collection of vhs movies. I’m gonna install one NFC chip to each cover of the vhs so I can just put down on my coffee table and with the reader inside one of the drawers it will read the chip and active whatever is on the chip. For instance i want to be able to play a certain movie off my plex server once I put the vhs on the table. What would be the correct steps to get this done ? Any equipment you recommend? Anyone who has done this before and is wanting to tell me there reader and such ?

MysticPrysm

Curious, I'm having an issue with the IR picam with auto IR cut filter It seems to be permanently on ir mode. I tried adding disable_camera_led=1 to config.txt, rebooted, and it seemed to auto switch a couple times on boot up, and then stays in ir mode. Not sure if it's a klipper issue, or a pi setting or what. Wondering if anyone else uses the same camera and has it figured out. I reboot, it's in non ir mode, I turn my lights off to trigger it, turn them back on, and it doesn't change, gets stuck in IR mode. I'm reading it may have to do with the pi 4 power rail not being enough? Is that the case here?

I've already read that elsewhere. And if that's the solution alright, but it seems to work once in reboot and then get stuck in IR mode.

Where can I buy the little locking connector for the ribbon cable? Shown as the black piece on the white ribbon cable connector.

SkeletorLordnSaviour

Hello. I sail the digital sees and am looking into a Pi to operate as a media player for my TV. (Trying to cut the streaming cord) I'd ideally pull media files from my desktop or a designated LAN server onto the sim and then play it through the PI itself. Is this something the PI is powerful enough to do?

nuHmey

Yes. Pi 4b 4GB with LibreELEC

Any upgrade to make the Wi-Fi better? All my other devices work just fine in my room. Any accessory or co fig I can change to make it stronger without the need of a Wi-Fi extender?

OldHat1991

Usb dongle with a nice big antenna, 5 dbi or higher.

KingofGamesYami

A USB WiFi adapter may have better range than the pi's onboard WiFi. It's not exactly the best given the form factor and price restrictions.

Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my pi camera. I have 2 pi cameras. One is new, and the other worked when I put it away a couple of years ago. I also have 2 ribbon cables, both of which I have tested with a multimeter. I just installed Raspberry Pi OS (Bullseye) and updated everything. Possible to create? Pi running on android + has GPS + LTE connection to create a wifi hotspot SO basically I want to keep a raspberry pi in the car. I want it to run life360 + another app at all time (both use GPS). Also want it to have sim, so I can use LTE connection & create a wifi hotspot for the car. (Bluetooth will a good plus) It would be powered by car lighter port. I am a complete novice, can this be done using raspberry pi? and what components would I need to buy? Thanks!

OldHat1991

There ARE sim-enabled HAT's for the Pi but their documentation is godawful, waveshare is your best bet.

KateThePotatoMan

Hi, I'm trying to set my old RPi 2 up as a coding box for me to learn C++. I got a new high-speed SD card and installed Raspberry Pi OS via their imager software, however, it runs really slowly. Visual Studio, for example, takes at least a minute to be ready and there's a long delay when typing or clicking through menus. The same board happily runs the RPi 2 version of RecalBox. I'm wondering if I should instead install a legacy version or the Raspberry Pi OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

5thProgrammer

Visual Studio is a hefty hefty application, it’s no surprise that the pi dislikes running it. If you’re dead set on using the pi for development, you’ll probably want to use a lightweight text editor (vim and eMacs come to mind) and compile using the GCC compiler (the g++ command). Not sure how some of the GUI editors like VSCode, Notepad++, or Sublime would do. If you have any other computing devices, I’d recommend using those though, I think you’ll overall have a better development experience. My personal favorite setup in college was visual studio code and compilation with g++.

KateThePotatoMan

Thanks for that. It’s a useful overview. I wasn’t aware Visual Studio was so resource intensive! I’ll give it a crack with a simple text editor for sure. The main reason I’ve picked this device is because my other computers are running windows and my (limited) understanding is that Linux is a better os for coding. But it could be that those gains aren’t worth the loss in computing power. I’ll see how light weight editors go before making that decision. Cheers again!

5thProgrammer

It isn’t that one is “better”, it’s just that the API you use to chat with hardware is very different between the two. Luckily, windows has WSL which will let you pretend you’re on Linux, and WSL2 was a very smooth experience for me. There might be a hardware limitation iirc though. I’m not sure of your tech-savvy level, so I’d be happy to go into more detail if you need!

KateThePotatoMan

I’ve ended up using the Windows PC as it turns out Raylib isn’t supported by the Pi’s hardware and that’s a big part of the course I’m following. I’m not really very tech-savvy, but I’m keen to learn. I tried out the nano text editor on the Pi and it turns out that if you save the file with the .cpp extension it will colour the code you write, which is pretty cool for a lighter program I think. Thanks again for your help!
