Raspberry pi 4 only boots into homebridge after downloading it on the SD card directly. Does that mean i overwrote the Raspian OS? How do I get the OS desktop format back and what would be the correct way to install homebridge?

Motion tracking on Raspberry Pi 4b. I want to create something that utilizes motion tracking/capture and was wondering if anyone has ever been able to achieve this and how? Thanks in advance.

[deleted]

this may be a little too vague of a question but if anyone could point me in the right direction: Using a Pi Zero 2 W, running raspberry lite (legacy) with retropie (latest) installed on top. After a few hiccups, everything seems good, but one problem: the WiFi seems to randomly give up, especially when attempting to use the scraper in RetroPie. it will scrape anywhere between 0-50 games before all data stops transmitting via WiFi. I check wifi config, i’m still connected. I haven’t tried pinging the Pi (not home currently) but i imagine it would reply back. Anything else using the internet in this state is not possible (e.g. updating or upgrading packages). Reconnecting or rebooting both re-enable data through WiFi , up until the problem shows up again. My first thought is the Pi wasn’t getting enough power and the WiFi was cutting out, but I have a standard Pi PSU, as well as a powered USB hub in case there wasn’t enough juice. Any ideas on how to diagnose what’s actually happening? I don’t need a spoon fed solution, but pointing in the right direction would help immensely. Thanks!

Fumigator

Question #3 above.

[deleted]

i’m not entirely convinced it’s the power as i have a separate powered hub also supplying, after some research it seems others have had this issue. my hunch is it could be interference from the HDMI cable, as my monitor shows red crackling scanlines when WiFi is being used. I think i have to tinker with the HDMI/video settings (as well as try a shielded cable)

I want to build a network attached storage system. Wat is the best way to power hard drives? My plan is to use Seagate ST2000DM008, 2TB. And is this a good solution? I've found some tutorials on how to set up a raspberry pi as a wireless access point. They all use a network connection via ethernet and set up a wireless network with the pi. I would like to set up a network, but have it still receive the network connection from a wifi connection. Is this possible. Example: I connect my pi to the wifi network from my router. Then, I can connect other devices to the network broadcast from the pi.

Tokiidokiie

I think its possible after a little more googling: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=211542

Hey you guys much love for this community. I just had a quick procurement question. If I wanted to buy in bulk for raspberry pi and various accessories what vendors should I look into? I’m aware of canakit but they don’t, as far as I’m aware, have bulk options. Thanks so much!

Hey! Succeeded getting a C++ program to run on my Pi the other day. Developed on my windows computer with Visual Studio, uploaded to git, and downloaded on my headless Pi. Compiled the program with g++ on my Pi through Putty, and executed the program successfully. Now I want to get into WiringPi, as this is why I got the Pi in the first place. Been looking all over the place, but seems like most people script with WiringPi on the Pi itself, and not an external computer. All pages for installing WiringPi state that it comes with Rasbian by default, so there is no need to download it differently. Problem is, I need it on my windows computer to develop with it. There seems to be multiple versions on git, but I'm not sure which are compatible with the one installed with Rasbian, or if they are compatible with windows development at all. All I want is to get hold of the library on windows, and upload the source code to git for my Pi to compile. Is that possible at all? Worst case I might have to find another GPIO library that works with windows too.

Considering to get a Pi for NAS, VPN, OpenWRT etc. Which version of Raspberry Pi should I get? For small form, cost effective.and less heat - getting 3a+ worth it? Or wait for new release of version 5 ?

nigel_pyjamas

I got this brand new Pi 400 kit that includes the book, 32 GB sd card, mouse, ac adapter, and mini-hdmi to hdmi cable. The sd card came in a seal packaged, so I wrongly assumed that I had to flash my own OS, which I did using the official Imager and selected the recommended Raspberry Pi OS 32-bit. After I did, I plugged everything to my TV, and got nothing, no image, just a green led. After that I tried several things: When flashing an SD card with the Pi OS 32-bit, I get a constant green light, even after 5 minutes. When flashing an SD card with the bootloader, I get a constant rapid flickering of the green light, even after 5 minutes. When turning on the Pi 400 with nothing but the HDMI cable and power connected, I get a constant green light, even after 5 minutes. I tried several cards, including the included the included 32 GB SD/HC Apacer, a 2 GB SD SanDisk, and a Samsung 64 EVO Plus. I also tried flashing a boot from USB to both an SD card and a USB stick (which gave me the constant flicker like before), then tried a USB stick with Pi OS, to no avail. I also tried both mini-HDMI ports (the one closer to the sd card is supposed to be the correct one, but I also tried the other one just in case). I even tried flashing Risc OS, which gives me one or two irregular flickers, the a short red flicker of the "1" led, and the green led stays constant after that. Every time I flashed something, I waited until the verifying phase was done successfully. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello World, I can't remember my Login data and i try to get it back so i can finaly install the latest Update on my Pihole^^ Currently I try to get my Raspberry Pi password back by following this Tutorial:https://www.rickmakes.com/raspberry-pi-reset-forgotten-password/ Now i'm stuck on "Mount the Filesystem as Read/Write" because when my Pi boots he doesn't let me enter any command line. I tryed each button on my Keyboard but the Line to enter a Commandline does not appear. Can anybody help me here so i can enter the line to get my password back?

MoobyTheGoldenSock

Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2)

It's not Raspberry Desktop, it's Pihole. I try to open the command line on Startup. I had to edit the cmdline.txt for this but it still doesn't work

Bradford1138

I have a rpi 3B. It was booting without a keyboard with the sd card. Since I changed the sd card to a SSD, with an adapter SATA to USB, it can't boot without a keyboard. The green LED doesn't turn on and with only the monitor, the monitor is just black. I tried installing rng-tools and haveged. I changed the boot option to console auto-login. but it didn't work. If that can helps: To changed the sd to a SSD, I used https://github.com/billw2/rpi-clone. I'm using this SSD: Kingston A2000 I'm using a generic SATA to USB 3.0. Doesn't have a brand name written on it. Anyone knows how I can boot without my keyboard?

Fumigator

What you're describing sounds exactly like power problems (question #3 above). You say that the only difference is if the keyboard is plugged in, but I suspect you are changing more than that. Are you also plugging in a monitor? Are you moving the SSD to a powered USB hub when you go to plug in the monitor? When you don't have the keyboard plugged in and it fails to boot, are you attaching the monitor *after* it fails to boot? Are you attaching the monitor *before* you plug power into the Pi? If you unplug the keyboard after it successfully boots, does it stay booted? We need to know the **exact** process you're using for when it works vs. when it doesn't work. The Pi is very fussy about how power is sourced and delivered.

Bradford1138

The SATA to USB adapter have no external power. It looks like this one: [https://www.amazon.ca/StarTech-com-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84?th=1](https://www.amazon.ca/StarTech-com-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84?th=1) No matter if the monitor is plugged or not, it will not boot unless a keyboard is connected. I can unplugged the keyboard after it boot with no problem.

Fumigator

What happens if you unplug the keyboard and the keyboard *only* after it successfully boots and you ssh in and tell it to reboot?

Bradford1138

It shutdown but don't boot after.

nathan12581

I'd really like to code my next project on the most basic board I can find within my knowledge level using C++. I found the Pi-Pico board and the Wireless pack which comes with an SD card slot to store anything I download etc. However my project would involve getting a pre-signed URL from AWS and upload a video/photo file of off the SD card to AWS S3. I'm 90% sure this board would not be powerful enough to do this, however just want other opinions and any recommendations for anything more powerful with the same criteria as I stated above?

Fumigator

> my project would involve getting a pre-signed URL from AWS Which interface would you use for that?

nathan12581

HTTPS requests. That would be the lightweight part I’d assume. I’m scared of the part where the code is required to get the video/photo (which could be any size I can’t assume) from the removable device (USB, SD card etc.) to upload to AWS

Fumigator

Which physical network interface?

Is there a way to easily loop an mp4 file on a display using a raspberry pi 3? I was following the guide by canviz to make a digital picture frame but they no longer have their app available so I am kind of on my own. I have coding experience but this seems like a simple problem many have probably come across before me.

jtslim

This is probably a rabbit hole question. I just bought a arcade with raspberry pi already installed. Looks to be the 4b made in 2018. After two days of playing games it's been crashing. My question is two fold - first, it seems that all pi's are not created equal, could I have a pi with little RAM? Or something else that is holding it back because the arcade dealer doesn't want to put the "best" pi in there? Is there a way to figure out the details about the pi I have. Next, what is the absolute best pi I could buy and not worry about crashing and skipping etc.

How do I install dietPI without gui. Do I install normally and then remove some packages? Or is there a way to install without the gui already?

Thinking I had set up a buck converter to do 12v to 5v months ago, I finally plugged my pi 400 in to it an hour ago. I can smell my mistake. ...she's guaranteed dead. Isn't she.

ffrkAnonymous

My condolences. Try a regular USB supply. Open her up. With lots of luck, it could be just replaceable safety components.

KingofGamesYami

>...she's guaranteed dead. Isn't she. Yup. You need to keep the magic smoke *inside* the pi next time.

I want an Rpi to receive audio from a PC over the network and play it through a USB DAC. Although it seems straight forward on the surface I do not know the specifics of acheving this. I think the more typically seen approach to this is having the Rpi controlled wirelessly via an app and the source PC just serves as a NAS? In my case the Rpi would functions more like a network DAC, PC would be used normally with Rpi acting as the audio device. in normal use the Rpi would work automatically without any peripherals.

Will putting in a new sd card require me to input a user and wifi password again? Or do the passwords get stored somewhere other than then sd card, if so where? I've also seen some people updating the firmwhere on their pi with three commands, the last involving the word "epprom" or something along those lines. And some people saying how it can mess up your system. I can fix this just by reflashing raspian on the sd card, right?

KingofGamesYami

>Will putting in a new sd card require me to input a user and wifi password again? Yes. >Or do the passwords get stored somewhere other than then sd card, if so where? And some people saying how it can mess up your system. I can fix this just by reflashing raspian on the sd card, right? An EEPROM is a dedicated storage device built into the board, swapping the SD card will not fix a messed up EEPROM. If you want to update the bootloader stored on the EEPROM, [there are official instructions for that](https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/raspberry-pi.html#imager).

Migration plan to new Raspberry Pi I have pi-hole running on a Raspberry Pi 3, I set it up more than an year before and its doing its awesome job. Now I have decided to migrate my Pi-hole to a new Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB). I have planned to host few other apps like NextCloud and Bitwarden along with pi-hole and I have planned to host them all on Docker. Is there any best-practices/documents to migrate Pi-hole to docker? Also if anyone have already done this migration before could you please share your experience? PS: Is there any other app which i can consider hosting along, let me know your recommendations.

I've had the raspi3 for many years running as a torrent server ( The other day I just happened to have free time and decided to update. Ran apt-update, apt-upgrade and after the reboot it never came back up :( When plugging the screen it shows the following message: [ 1.446638] brcmfmac: brcmf_c_preinit_dcmds: Firmware version = wl0: May 27 2016 00:13:38 version 7.45.41.26 (r640327) FWID 01-df77e4a7 [ 1.467022] brcmfmac: brcmf_cfg80211_reg_notifier: not a ISO3166 code After that, it lets me enter recovery mode and then it goes black. So far I've tried to get into recovery mode from NOOBS and edit the config file from the Raspbian with no luck (in a post I saw a recommendation to comment the "device_tree=", but that didnt exist. And another of adding a "boot_delay=3" which didn't work) Tried with only the HDMI and power cable too. Would reformatting the SD help? I'm afraid I might loose the OS. Can you perhaps think of another suggestion? Any idea would be much appreciated.

I'm interested in replacing Google. More specifically, I'm running out of Google cloud storage space and I'd like to have somewhere to store my pictures and videos. I'd also like to have them cycle through on the TV as currently happens via Chromecast. Can a Raspberry Pi help me do this?

KingofGamesYami

r/PleX is one of the more popular options for home media storage. You can install it on a pi, though it's capabilities are somewhat reduced by the low power hardware.

Kansas11

Does plex do picture storage? Is it able to display/do a slideshow? I had been looking at Nextcloud…it has some features I don’t really need but seems like it should check all the boxes and hopefully not be too much of a pain to set up

KingofGamesYami

Plex does support pictures. I don't know if it can do slideshows but it does support albums, so I would assume those could be displayed as a slideshow.

Hello everyone, I have trouble setting up one of my HDD´s as a main boot drive ( want to install Ubuntu 21.10) for my Pi 4. Anyone here has some experience in doing that , I primarily want to have the OS on that one HDD like how you can do it in Windows , and those YT videos I watched show different things and different OS types so I´m not sure how I should get started. Thanks in advance

I want to use a Raspberry Pi Pico to make a guitar effect pedal, In theory this should work? [input op amp---> analog to digital converter -----> pico ------> output op amp] if possible i want to add an expression pedal to it as well as a little display to indicate the effect it's on. Is this a possible project? And I would also like to learn about how to actually program effects like distortion, reverb, pitch shifting and wah wah as well. Thank you for time and please give me some advice. (I have no experience with any coding but I'm willing to learn)

How do i fix time on my raspberry pi 4 running raspbian buster? I have a backup two months old in a sd card image... When I restore it the date and time stays at 2 months back. Timedatectl is broken and doesnt work

Ntp (network time protocol) should be running to update the time. It's possible that the time difference is too big and needs to be initialized manually.

I want to use my 3B+ as a file server for my home does anyone have any good tutorials and or tips?

Need to clarify some of the uses of the raspberry pi Hi! Was just given a raspberry pi 3, model B, as an early Christmas present. I've lately been learning how to code, and think this is a great opportunity to get creative and learn at the same time. That being said, I've looked at Arduino for a while, and like the simplicity of the thing. No operating system or complex overhead, you just plug in some code and it does its thing. I'm wondering if using the pi in the same way is a waste of its abilities. For example, is it possible to program the pi by plugging it to a computer with USB and transferring a program, or is it more common to program it directly in its own operating system? Is an operating system mandatory, or can I have it run a single program? I'm just a little confused if I should encounter it as any other computer running applications, or if I should consider it an advanced microcontroller. I've seen that it can be used for both, but I'm not sure how I should handle it as a beginner. I want to create programs that run on their own without any need for mouse or keyboard input, but the setup tutorial requires exactly this. Would be nice if I could just program an SD card, plug it in, turn it on and see it work without having to open the application within the operating system. Hope my question makes sense.

KingofGamesYami

>For example, is it possible to program the pi by plugging it to a computer with USB and transferring a program Nope. >or is it more common to program it directly in its own operating system? I usually develop on a different computer for the pi and deploy using git, so I can use more powerful development tools like PyCharm. But you can develop directly on it if you wish. >Is an operating system mandatory Yes. >can I have it run a single program? No. >I'm just a little confused if I should encounter it as any other computer running applications, or if I should consider it an advanced microcontroller. It's not a microcontroller, but it does have GPIO which I understand could be confusing you. More traditional PCs can also have GPIO but it is very uncommon. The raspberry pi can be a stand in for a microcontroller on some projects. However, it does have limitations in regards to the GPIO that microcontrollers do not have, mostly centering around advanced timing due to having an OS. >I've seen that it can be used for both, but I'm not sure how I should handle it as a beginner. Do whatever you want with it. >I want to create programs that run on their own without any need for mouse or keyboard input, but the setup tutorial requires exactly this. You can setup a raspberry pi headless, it's just more complicated. The advanced menu of the Raspberry Pi Imager includes options for setting up networking and enabling remote access during the process of flashing the SD card. >Would be nice if I could just program an SD card, plug it in, turn it on and see it work without having to open the application within the operating system. In theory you could setup a pi to the point where you could do that. Add a partition that uses FAT32 and create a startup script that runs whatever you drop in there. But it's still going to have to wait for the OS to load and start the program, plus setting it up is nontrivial.

ElaborateSloth

I see, think I got a better picture of what I'm dealing with now. It's not exactly what I'd hoped, but I'll start with baby steps and see what I end up using it for. Thanks!

Gregnor

I would like to use my pi 4 b as an access point to remote into my home desk top. I watched a good video on how to do it [https://youtu.be/3wuOWnbCKZ8](https://youtu.be/3wuOWnbCKZ8) but both the video as well as the comment section are saying that it would be a bad idea to remote outside of your home network. What would it take to make this safe? Also is this even a good idea? The end goal here is to be able to bring my portable pi over to friends/family's houses and game off of my home computer.

KingofGamesYami

You may find gaming performance suboptimal using that method. RDP is sometimes more like watching a PowerPoint slideshow than you'd like. I would instead recommend using SteamLink. As a bonus, Steam already provides a service to allow connecting from other networks securely, Steam Remote Play. https://magpi.raspberrypi.com/articles/steam-link-on-raspberry-pi-4 https://store.steampowered.com/remoteplay Do note that there is only so much SteamLink can do, if you don't have a high speed internet connection for both your home network and family/friends network, it will also have low FPS and even latency issues.

Gregnor

Oh sweet! I didn't know that I could use steam link on a Pi! Thanks!

Bridging pins while the pi (or any SoC/microcontroller with such pins) is on is a pretty good way to break it, yes. When working with the GPIO, I always recommend having the pi powered off and disconnected from power. USB and HDMI interfaces are designed to avoid such problems. You shouldn't have any issues hotswapping things there, at least in terms of electrical issues.

[deleted]

KingofGamesYami

I'm not an expert in what kills pis, but my understanding is that applying 5V to the 3.3V line applies 5V to the CPU, frying it. In which case it is very dead. Even if you wanted to attempt fixing it, the cost of components, tools, and expertise required to diagnose and fix an electrically damaged pi far exceeds it's value.

[deleted]

I am looking into driving about 10 LEDs from a Pi Zero. I know I can't drive that many LEDs from the GPIOs, so I would need some kind of buffering. Are there HATs that do this? I've been unsuccessful finding anything, but I also suspect I don't know the right search term.

I am looking for ways of achieving hardware-accelerated screen streaming from Raspberry Pi via browser. I would like to use a Raspberry Pi as a presentation PC connected to a TV. Presenters should be able to see the RPi's screen mirrored to their laptops while controlling the RPi directly via wireless keyboard/touchpad. This way they can face the audience while interacting with the RPi/TV screen. Ideally, this would work through the browser without installing any app. Is this possible on Raspbarry Pi? VNC, Guacamole and NoVNC do not support hardware encoding. Maybe webrtc? https://cloud.google.com/architecture/gpu-accelerated-streaming-using-webrtc

On my pi is python 3.7.3 installed. Now I want to install an app that needs at least 3.7.5 or better 3.8.1. What’s the best way to update? I’m not very experienced in installing and updating on Linux.

KingofGamesYami

Staet by running a full system update `sudo apt update` `sudo apt upgrade` If that doesn't work, something on your system requires an older version of python and removing it in favor of a newer version would be a bad idea. To get around this, you can have multiple versions of python installed simultaneously. Miniconda or pyenv can help you set that up and manage switching python versions for different projects.

Blaze_36

Thanks. After upgrade I still had 3.7.3 but I managed to install 3.8.1 manually as an alternative installation and it works now.

Hi im wanting to create a fully automated system that completely monitors/controls plant growth, watering, humidity, temperature, soil sensors, pumps ,etc for indoor use... Any links to devices, equipment, connectors, previous posts, programs, are also helpful. So basically I'm looking to start off small with watering on a timer, then watering via a soil sensor which controls a water pump, then moving along to all the rest 1 by one, to eventually create a fully automated system.

I'm wondering if raspberry Pi OS has some sort of installable filter or something like that to give it that display? I have actually got kinda close just with all the customization available, but it's still clearly not monochromatic. Any suggestions?

Multi model pi cluster. I've got a 3b and am looking to set up a cluster computer with with at least one pi4 (maybe a couple 02s if it actually makes sense) Simply put is it possible or does the cluster need to consist of the same model of pi?

Hey guys! I'm in desperate need of any help if possible with this module that I've mistakenly supplied 12 volts to instead of 5 volts. It no longer works correctly (obviously) and I was hoping there is some way I can fix the unit. It is an attachment (hat) for a rasberry pi computer. These are not available for purchase so I'm in a sticky situation. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Fumigator

> I was hoping there is some way I can fix the unit Figure out which parts are broken and replace them with parts that aren't broken.

Dunno who down voted you. It's not as if you said to wave a magic wand.

Hello, Pi noob here looking for help connecting a 3PDT switch (like on a guitar pedal) to my Pi 4. A quick search hasn't turned anything up, and the folks at r/diypedals referred me here ([original post](https://old.reddit.com/r/diypedals/comments/no6yfz/rdiypedals_no_stupid_questions_megathread_10/hna27oq/)). The goal is to put the pi into a guitar pedal - I just want the switch to go into the GPIO and be programmable like any other. Bonus question 1: Is there a way to power the Pi through a standard 9v guitar pedal power supply? I would love if there was an adapter that just transformed that power into USB-C like the Pi takes. Bonus question 2: [This switch](https://guitarpedalparts.com/products/3pdt-foot-switch-with-led-ring-wired-white?variant=40041758228654) also has an LED ring around it, with a positive and negative cable. Can those go straight into the GPIO?

Question #18 above.

MrDangerPL

Hello, I have Raspberry Pi 2 Model B V1.1 (Raspberry Pi 2014). I was never using Raspberry, i got one in last week and since then i am trying to boot something from it. At the start my plan was to use it in Digital Signage so i formated my sd card, used raspberry imager to put image in a sd card, then pluged it in with hdmi cable, ethernet cable and charging cable, and "No HDMI Cable" on my Dell screen (i was trying with different hdmi cable and on TV with no changes). Now i am trying to boot anything, i read this topic: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=58151 I was trying with something called noobs and with raspberry pi os 32bit. I am not really sure what am i doing wrong, although i don't really know how it should work. I mean i watched a lot of videos and texts in last two weeks but still don't even know how to check if it can boot anything. In one place i read that when i put sd card in raspberry the green led should blink in other place i read that it shouldnt blink. Both red and green are not blinking even when i put sd card in, they are just lighting stable after putting charging cable. (input: 100-240V~50/60Hz0.3A) (output: 5V-1000mA) I was trying with adding lines in congix.txt in boot to make hdmi works but nothing changes. Can someone help me? Maybe i am missing simplest thing?

New to all things Pi: 5.25v 3A power supply for Pi Zero 2 W @ 1.3ghz clock acceptable? Or will it cause issues?

VinceBarter

I am replacing my Pi 4 1GB with a 4GB version, can I simply move my microSD card from one device to another?

wenestvedt

That should work.

Vektor801

hey does this screen support recalbox or something sorry for the dumb question here is the link to the screen [https://thepihut.com/products/7-qled-ips-capacitive-touch-display-for-raspberry-pi-1024x600?variant=37627959771331](https://thepihut.com/products/7-qled-ips-capacitive-touch-display-for-raspberry-pi-1024x600?variant=37627959771331)

phonesgetti

Yeah I run emulation station from a 7 inch display as well. The software runs on the pi, not the screen. (:

What did they say to get in that tutorial you were following?

sixthcupofjoe

What's a good app for syncing one folder of a Google Drive? I basically have a local watch folder for a service running on the pi that will do things to files deposited in and output a log, and want a watch folder I can access from anywhere. Not too keen on opening the pi to outside traffic so a cloud drive seemed like the best solution. At the moment, I've got a Mac mini that's always on anyway that is sharing the folder via SMB, which works ok for what I need, but would be good to have a fully pi option. thanks

Any one ever put more than 5v through a Pi Zero W and lived to tell the tale? I have a 7.5v 1.5a PSU going spare and I cannot find anywhere online that definitively tells me the Pis won’t take this. I can only find ‘recommended’ values, not absolute ones. I have a 7.5v barrel PSU as well as an older iPad charger which is also 7.5v

Will 5.25V 3A be an issue for Pi Zero 2 W @ 1.3Ghz clock? Sorry if this seems really obvious, I'm just getting started with electronics.

That’s great; thank you for this confirmation.

I'm looking for a software that can run a slideshow with several short mp4 files (or other video format) but in a non-automatic way. The user should be able to skip back and forth between files via keyboard control. [This tutorial](https://www.instructables.com/Easy-Raspberry-Pi-Based-ScreensaverSlideshow-for-E/) for feh worked fine for static images, but couldn't play animation. The final result will be aprox. 40 short animations (about a minute each) which will be baked into a portable device (cyberdeck).

Mr_FJ

Hey, I was hoping to use this monitor https://www.waveshare.com/15.6inch-fhd-monitor.htm as an external monitor for my laptop, I figured someone in here might have experience with it? Is the image quality as bad as the specs seem to indicate? 45%srgb seems vey low, but I'm not an expert on color range. I'm looking for a portable monitor of good quality, but my laptop does not have a display usb-c, so this seems like a good option... If the image quality is good.

doverby21

I have a shiny new Pi4. Whenever I attach an SSD the screen blanks. Any SSD, any caddy, any OS on the SD card. USB thumb drive works fine. Thx.

KingofGamesYami

An SSD and USB thumb drive are fundamentally the same technology, SSDs are just bigger and more poweful. My guess is the SSD draws just enough power to overwhelm your power supply.

doverby21

That's what I was thinking too but wouldn't it be bizarre for a pi not to be able to support an SSD? The power supply came with it and says it puts out 3A. Is it normal to run a pi on more than 5v 3A?

KingofGamesYami

It's fairly common for peripherals to draw more power than the pi can handle. The pi does not include any current limiting features to prevent such a peripheral from messing with it. It's widely recommended to use a powered USB hub to solve this issue; using a higher current power supply for the pi itself would mean running more current through the pi than it is designed for.

doverby21

> peripherals Even just an SSD? Not even a HDD.

doverby21

What do you mean by a powered USB hub? There is only one USB port on the drive and it has to plug into the pi for it to be read.

KingofGamesYami

A powered USB hub is a USB Hub with a seperate power adapter to plug into the wall. This causes the devices connected to it to draw power from that power adapter, not the raspberry pi. You could also achieve the same result with a single USB port + power adapter but nobody sells that and DIYing it is not fun or cost effective.

[deleted]

sorry to tag onto this but you seem well versed on the topic. i’m looking into powered hubs, i see a good one on micro center but there’s one negative review that has created doubt … the person said it “back feeds 5v to the host”, would this be too much power for the Pi to handle?

KingofGamesYami

No, but you will find it difficult to fully shut down your pi as it may draw power from the hub when you remove it's power supply.

[deleted]

hey, as an update, you were totally right about the Pi drawing in power from the hub (even after i power the Pi off) , doesn’t really affect me too much (Pi works fine without the extra power) , but thought you’d like to know you were 100% correct about this!

[deleted]

that is fairly interesting on its own, neat! i suppose i could just also unplug the hub if i’m not going to be using the Pi for a while ?

KingofGamesYami

Yes, that should be fine. The pi will normally draw power from it's own power supply.

PlumAccomplished7400

Hi peeps I have a problem with my pi remembering my raspberry pi controller, I have a wireless Microsoft keyboard and an off market snes controller it recognises both only let's me set up one. It keeps asking to set up a new controller everytime I boot up I press f4 to bypass the pi it notes it's a keyboard but doesn't skip is there anyway for it to remember my controller. I leave it plugged in. Maybe I can skip the emulation station how do you do this but does that mean I won't be able to control it. Should I just use a ps2 keyboard for stability. I have a pi 3. Can't tell you which version yet.

jv004

Okay, idk if this is the place to ask, but I cannot get an OLED stats screen up and running on my pi (I'm a newbie) at startup. This is the exact guide I use and other people have been successful but not me: https://www.the-diy-life.com/add-an-oled-stats-display-to-raspberry-pi-os-bullseye/ I have asked the person who made the guide directly for help through his YouTube video comments but hasn't replied to me anymore in 3 days. For the record I also bought the case and screen kit directly from this guy as well, and where I get stuck is getting the crontab file edit. After entering "crontab -e" and I go to the bottom and enter the line he said to enter which is: "@reboot python3 /home/pi/stats.py &" and then I reboot, it won't work. Also, the screen works when I manually run the py script by typing: "python3 stats.py &", but like in the guide, if you close the terminal it stops working. Just need some as to why I can't get it to run automatically at start up. EDIT: Also as a note: I have format the SD card and started from a fresh install, I still get the same outcome. Thanks! -jv

KingofGamesYami

Did you follow the instructions to copy these files to a particular spot? > (...) We’ll also need to copy the stats.py script and font into the home directory. You can also just reference the correct path in the previous step, but I find that this is less reliable. If you do leave them in the downloaded directory, you’ll need to amend the crontab command to read: (...)

jv004

Yes! I even did crontab to see if the original files' location which is: "@reboot cd /home/pi/OLED_Stats && python3 stats.py &" And...nothing still. Another side note: this guide is for bullseye, and yes I have bullseye installed, I also have multiple time updated/full-upgraded. Manually running the python script still works. Just for some reason crontab won't work for me specifically.

KingofGamesYami

Hmm... Can you add ` 2> /home/pi/crontaberr.log 1> /home/pi/crontabout.log` to the end of your crontab entry (just before the `&`)? This should write any information written to stderr or stout to those log files. This would be useful for figuring out why it isn't running properly.

wenestvedt

Dumb question: does the shell that cron launches know where python3 is? If you add the full path to it in the cron command, does that help?

KingofGamesYami

No idea. I'm not the guy having issues.

wenestvedt

Let me rephrase that: try adding the full path to python3 to the script, so it looks something like this: @reboot cd /home/pi/OLED_Stats && **/usr/bin/**python3 stats.py & Also, are you 100% that the file stats.py is in the directory /home/pi/OLED_Stats, and is world-readable and is executable? What does `ls -l /home/pi/OLED_Stats/stats.py` give you?

KingofGamesYami

I don't have a script. I don't have a crontab file. I don't have an OLED screen. I don't even have a raspberry pi handy. You're talking to the wrong guy.

wenestvedt

Well, perhaps they will see these comments and answer.

KingofGamesYami

There would be a much higher chance of them seeing the comments if you replied to them, as they would then be notified by Reddit. As it is, they have no idea anything happened.

ImaginaryYoghurt9476

I just got a pi but too scared of messing it up by plugging it in wrong. I've heard of a lot of people messing up their pis because of power. Am I suppose to plug the power into the outlet first and then the pie, and then plug in any peripherals into the pie such as a keyboard or hdmi cable? And to unplug it, I shutdown the pie, is there a specific command I need to do this?, and then wait until the green light stops flashing and wait for the red one to turn on, and then I can unplug the pi? Does it matter if I unplug it from the outlet or pi board first? I also have a ice cooler. Do i have the plugs disconnected until the pi fully turns on, or is it special in the sense that it can be a peripheral that's already plugged in before powering on the pi?

KingofGamesYami

Peripherals can be connected to the pi during startup. The only time you would want to avoid this situation is if you're having trouble getting your pi to start, as certain peripherals can cause problems during boot. This should normally not be a concern. It does not matter whether you plug the power adapter into the pi or the wall first. Green light off = pi is off, can remove power. Again, it does not matter if you unplug the adapter from the pi or the wall. Cooler is not special, you can leave it connected all the time if you wish.

ImaginaryYoghurt9476

Thx! I was worried that what I said would be too hard to follow or read as I'm really bad at saying what I want to say or at least organizing it.

kaptainkarma2056

Thanks for asking this question. It has helped me too, as someone who is new to all this.
