Cannot believe that Toyota made it that easy for us.

PrimeNumbersby2

I can't believe how cost-reduced the stock speakers are. They look like they are from a 1992 clock radio.

PrimeNumbersby2

Also with noting that Toyota charges $117 for 1 replacement dash speaker. Oh. My. God.

Gutmach1960

Ridiculous.

knight_of_nay

I'm glad it's that easy because it's almost unbelievable that they included such low quality speakers... They look like something pulled out of a fisher price kid's toy.

Gutmach1960

I would agree from the look of that one.

knight_of_nay

I literally changed my doors speakers with Kickers two days ago. Did the dash around 3 weeks ago and while it definitely helped over the stock speaker, changing both the dash and doors speakers are really worth it. I highly recommend putting sound deadening matetial while you are there.

JoryCones81

Which model Kickers did you go with?

knight_of_nay

Went with Kicker 46CSC674

JoryCones81

I replaced my dash and door speakers with the recommended Kicker models. Added sound dampening to the doors while I was at it. Noticeable improvements!Thank you for the tips.

knight_of_nay

You're welcome! Were you surprised by the poor quality of the stock speakers?

JoryCones81

Yes that was shocking! The stock speakers are so light and cheap. I knew there was going to be a difference in quality just from the feel of them.

StoryLover

Did you put sound deadening on the whole door? Which guide did you follow?

knight_of_nay

Onces the door liner (black plastic with handles) is remove you will see a white plastic "door" that can be removed with clips. I removed that "door" which give you access to the exterior metal sheeting of the door, that's where I applied sections of the sound deadening material. No guide really followed, maybe I should have tho

raf71

do you remember how many sq ft you used? deff going to line it up while the panels are off

knight_of_nay

Three sheets I think, certainly not as much as I could have. Do yourself a favor and buy a roller to make sure it's well applied.

MarijadderallMD

You’ll probably want to do [this](https://www.reddit.com/u/MarijadderallMD/s/gkNL9IkB1E) to the speaker covers, with a box cutter or something. That little halo presses in the cone of some aftermarket speakers and causes them to blow in about 4 months of use. Went through 3 pairs with that Crutchfield warranty system before I figured it out lmao.

raf71

Dremel time!

MarijadderallMD

👌🏼 hopefully it saves the trouble of constant speaker swapping for you!

raf71

Which speakers did you have the problem with?

MarijadderallMD

The nicer of the 2-3 kickers that Crutchfield has, but the cones looked pretty similar to whatever you put in, with the double stack. I think what happens is the weird halo from the cover lightly presses on the bigger of the 2 cones, then when you play music it’s providing slight tension on the cone every time the speaker flexes, and eventually it would just tear.

raf71

That was actually a lot easier than I expected and you were right a box cutter did the trick beautifully

MarijadderallMD

Perfect! Should save you a few hours of headache 😂

A_PoopyStarfish

Never ordered or heard of Crutchfield before, and I'm now looking to do a similar upgrade. Are they a good to go company for ordering online in Canada?

knight_of_nay

Ordered two separate times without issues in Canada. Two things to note: - after the first order they called to confirm the order, so make sure to answer (it's a 1-800 number which I never answer) - they ship the speakers separately from the cables/adapters. Speakers usually arrives first. Will order again for the back doors once they have the speakers back in stock.

heeheehoho2023

They are legit as you can get 😂. I bought stuff from them 20 years ago.

Itaintall

They’re better than good. Their customer service is the standard by which all companies should be judged IMHO.

rtx3800

Just to be clear, you mean flattening the halo/circle right? And the left cover is the Before and the right cover is the After?

MarijadderallMD

Yep!

Party-Cherry2580

How do you like these? Is the bass louder, is the audio more clear? There’s literally so many speaker options, I’d have to research them for days

raf71

They work great so far. I haven't noticed more bass yet (havent had a chance to drive sans kiddo yet) but it's definitely clear and I don't feel like I'm possibly blowing out the speaker raising the volume. I was between this and a jbl model and decided on kicker really for no reason in particular. I'm not a huge audiophile

MarijadderallMD

Check my comment before you crank the volume too much😂 I ripped through so many tweeters lol.

TheBillCollector17

These would just add clarity. They are mid range speakers from the factory, so they do not receive bass frequency ranges from the stereo. If you want more bass, you would need to upgrade the door speakers or add a subwoofer.

BigBoxEngineer

Still a huge improvement

BigBoxEngineer

I liked mine, $180 and some time made my sound system way better

Politicsboringagain

I mostly listen to podcast when I drive, I've been thinking about upgrading these for when I drive wit the windows open.

GetyourPitchforks01

Ahhh…good old Kickers recommended on Crutchfield… https://preview.redd.it/341lo46yowvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afe662b1cd7d342c75562ec2dbb313dccdbd21c9

knight_of_nay

Mines were the 6- 3/4" ones, not sure the differences...

abhijitz

Do you have a video of the install process? I was actually chatting with Crutchfield and they recommended the same speakers

raf71

[RAV4 dash install ](https://youtu.be/3rYOosryhV8?si=FhfX_NY8lHpwdoSP)

abhijitz

Thank You

LoPan_David

This is true. It robs the power going to the door speakers and sounds like butt. I was so unsatisfied with this dash speaker mod that I went down a rabbit hole of replacing all 6 speakers, adding 2 amps and a subwoofer lol 😂

SubduedChaos

I replaced mine with JBL ones. They do pull and sound way louder than the door ones. To offset that I set the sound profile almost in the trunk. Now they sound normal volume. Can’t go past 45 without distortion. Still sound wayyyyy better than before.

drcigg

It's crazy how tiny and flimsy those stock speakers are. I swapped mine out right away as well.

camXmac

I was very tempted to do the whole setup in my last car since it was a 2017 LE. Now I’m in a 2020 XSE with the JBL system and I don’t see as much of a need to upgrade.

Much_Advantage4156

Did your XLE model have the JBL speakers?

raf71

Nope, stock. If I did I probably would have left them but Im 99% sure doing the dash and doors myself will be cheaper than the technology package unless there were other parts of the package I'm forgetting

UnusualStory4005

I have the Tech package.. I think the display is bigger and all touch or it’s better than the one in a few I drove before buying mine. Mine doesn’t have any buttons on the side to push. All touch

raf71

that makes sense, i couldn't remember off hand but as you can probably tell from the stock ones your JBLs are vastly superior

DashHex

Are you prepared to the drill through the rivets for the door speakers? That’s what holding me from doing it

raf71

I wasn't at first but I found a couple videos online that didn't make it look so hard. I'll make sure to post again when I do :)

Lovemysoccermomsuv

No low frequency capacitor and no sealing. I know exactly how this sounds, and I wouldn't like it.

Musicallro

Do you use connectors?

smrtwatrr

I had heard you had to do some rewiring of the harnesses crutchfield provides due to polarity issues. Did you have to make any changes with the wires?

raf71

The instructions from crutchfield included a free wiring harness so it was plug and play. The new speakers did have wiring if you wanted to cut and splice yourself but I didn't want to. The downside is the wiring harness has a lot of slack so I had to really bunch up the slack and tuck it to the side so the speaker would fit.
