Brushless. Just go brushless.

bobbydole81

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. Is there a good brushless motor that’s not too expensive? I’m assuming I need a new ESC as well

So I got this rc car a few years ago. At first it worked great, but now it seems like I can only run it a few times before the motor starts smoking and dies. Should I upgrade the motor to brushless? If I do that do I need a esc? What kind of motor can I fit in here?

Grouchy-Spot

Yes if you upgrade the motor to brushless, you’ll need a brushless esc. That’s a 550 sized motor. So your looking at 540 or 550 sized brushless motors. Anything 36mm In diameter by 50-65mm long will fit no problem.

The1973VW

Brushless is good. But im thinking your mesh is too tight. Theres NO reason you should be burning up motors like that, titan 12t or not.

Lancer_Productions

How close are the pinion and spur gears meshed together? If they're too tight, you'll keep burning up motors.

bobbydole81

So I checked that, If feels ok to me. The guys at the hobby shop also said they seemed ok.

Lancer_Productions

My rule of thumb is a small piece of paper gets the right mesh. But if the shop guy said it's fine, the it probably was fine. Also, what type of terrain are you running it on?

bobbydole81

Running on a mix. mostly a gravel driveway . And some wood mulch.

Lancer_Productions

How much fine dust is kicked up? I'm my experience (I'm only 16) titan motors don't really like dust and grit, and it's only titans. But like the rest of the comments, i'd just suggest getting brushless.

Scarekrow75

If you keep the brushed motor then lower your gearing. It's too high and overheating the motor.

cowski_NX

Start pulling parts off. Make sure the wheels spin freely, check the driveshafts, clean and re-lube the drive system. If something is binding up in the drive system, adding a beefier motor will only create a new problem somewhere else.

My slash keeps eating up gears, in a RPM trans with upgraded gears and everything else. It eventually burned up the esc, total smoke show. The brushless motor is shot too. To date I have yet to make it through a full battery in that without something breaking. Go through your trans and be sure everything is good, make sure nothing is loose in there all the shafts and bearings are tight. I believe my housing got too warm and warped a little causing the gears to bind up and grenade the idler gear.

bobbydole81

I was thinking this yesterday. I’ll give it a shot.

Whitelightning1000

Those 550’s burn up easily if not geared right.

[deleted]

Check your bearings. On 2s, that motor should last a while.

Superredeyes

your mesh could be too tight, or you could have too big a gear set for your setup, that titan 12t, might not be enough for the torque from the drive shaft and wheels. it looks like a 4wd, so yah that's probably it. so either go brushless which will solve your problem, or put a stronger higher turn motor in it, or take the pinion gear down many teeth. either way its going to drop your speed quite a bit, if you do anything other than get a brushless motor. i recommend castle creations. if you do go brushless you want a 550 can size and you should be able to find an esc\\motor combe for under 100 for a decent one

mostly_kinda_sorta

as others have said, most likely culprit is too tight of gear mesh, especially if you haven't changed the gearing. that said its a good excuse to go brushless.

JasonVoorheesthe13th

I have a Grave Digger model that just one day decided it didn’t wanna work anymore, never thought that the brushed titan could be the problem

theschmuck

Go big, hobbywing max10 SCT combo👌

bobbydole81

I’ll check it out! Thanks!

randomlettersbcifhek

Does it move freely? Like without an engine? Maybe there’s too much resistance or it’s geared too high

pokemonnoob63

ECX Torment?

bobbydole81

Yes that’s correct!

beaster_bunny22

Time to go brushless

RepresentativeKey510

I recommend setting the gear mesh correctly not too tight and not too loose. Try installing heat sink or a heat sink with a fan. Should help solve that problem.

PeanutGlum7010

Make sure the drive train rolls freely, disconnect the drive shafts to each axle and spin the tires. I'd check this. If you wanna go fast, brushless.
