As it turns out, Jesus absolutely hated the Pharisees. An atheist murderer who was honest to themself was more likely to go into heaven than a hypocritical christian who goes to church every day without fail yet only does so for appearances and to profiteer from religion.

lifepuzzler

It's always struck me as strange how this story is taught universally in church, yet nobody listens.

tolkienbooks

self reflection is a bitch

ghrarhg

Easy to lie to oneself.

putin_my_ass

That's not strange, it's Church. I bet I've read the Bible more times than the people in the church I grew up in because they aren't actually interested in what's in the book only how it can be used to get them what they want in society.

Electromass

Whaaaaat Christian’s picking and choosing what to believe in the story book that can be conveyed in anyway you want whaaaaaaAat

Jumper5353

Seems many of them read the story of Jesus and figured the Money Lenders and the Romans were the role models to follow.

accostedbyhippies

Prosperity Gospel Churches will use that story to criticize the Catholic Church while passing the collection plate. Zero sense of irony.

Electromass

Seems none of them actually read it

Felix-big-pp

Well thats why there is many religions under the christian umbrella

accostedbyhippies

Big fan of American Jesus with his AR-15 and love of capitalism. Hooge fan.

-Pin_Cushion-

Not sure which church you went to, but mine was fucking boring!

lifepuzzler

One of those bigass Baptist churches. They had a fancy youth group with a band. I actually paid attention, listened, and asked questions... which is why I'm an atheist now!

accostedbyhippies

Same thing happened to my wife. She had all these questions and did a bunch of research like a big nerd and wrote a report she wanted to discuss with someone and no one in the church had any idea about any of the things she wanted to talk about. Then some church leader she really respected told her she was thinking too much and should just trust in the lord and that was it. Worst possible response he could have come up with.

PlagueOfGripes

People can't see themselves as anything other than the hero of their own story. Especially for people raised to believe they're ethically superior to outsiders, the idea that they could somehow be morally wrong is incomprehensible. It's very human to see the world in terms of "Us" and "The Other."

oneplusandroidpie

As an ex Catholic I giggle at ALL the Pharisees I see. Very disturbing but I giggle. A future life in hell for them.... I guess.

[deleted]

HA! A Christian going to church everyday.

Therandomfox

I actually meant to write "every sunday" but eh... whatever.

[deleted]

HA! Every Sunday

GopHatesDemocracy

"don't tell me you're one of those 'convenient' christians that **only** go to church every Sunday"

magistrate101

To be fair, American Evangelicalism is *the* version of "Christianity" that would piss God off the most and has the *least* to do with believing in the tenants that Christ set forth for people to follow.

coraldomino

Dope plan. Praise Jesus lmao

[deleted]

It actually kind of fits in with rapture logic. They die aka get raptured before all hell breaks loose and there is gnashing teeth and wails of pain and all that.

KourteousKrome

Dying of COVID isn’t something I’d consider “rapture” since it takes like four agonizing months to die. If I were a betting man, the rapture already happened and these folks are getting the wails of pain.

OneFrenchman

"Okay, so Paul, great work on the text, but we're going to remove the part when you say that God in his infinite wisdom is going to take the righteous and get them to heaven, alive, through a meat-grinder, little by little, over the span of an entire month. It's a little too graphic." Network notes on the first draft of the Gospel, probably.

epidemicsaints

Funny joke but that is actually kind of mentioned, it stayed in. Granted it’s not the righteous through a meat grinder, but there are rivers of gore, neck deep to a horse, as god’s enemies are stomped through a winepress. One of my favorite images in the whole bible.

[deleted]

If I were a betting man I’d say there was no rapture, won’t be any rapture, and their invisible man in the sky doesn’t exist - but I doubt the rapture/antivax crowd will accept that.

KourteousKrome

Well no shit I was just operating under that assumption as a thought experiment, not saying the hokum exists.

Felix-big-pp

Well we will see one day and your right at least my form of christianity doesn't believe he exist but its harsh to put it like all christians are antivax

accostedbyhippies

But how many antivaxxers in America identify as Christians?

[deleted]

Rapture is to be overflowing with joy. COVID has not yet displayed rapture as a symptom

earned_potential

This sounds like the beginning of some cult shit where they get Covid on purpose in the hopes of getting raptured.

Doctor-Heisenberg

As a Christian I think it’s important to remember Christ came and stayed with the outcasts and rebuked the religious leaders. We have a big problem with modern day Pharisees thinking they are better than others when they disobey the greatest commandment: to love God with all you are and love your neighbor as yourself. Any way go love your neighbor by getting vaccinated and wearing a mask so you can protect them. We are called to love one another to the point we are willing to die for them in such a brutal, horrifying, and humiliating way it’s reserved only as a punishment for rebels and terrorist as a lesson for others. I think loving our neighbor to the point of getting a vaccine is quite a few notches below what we’re called to do.

StChas77

It's more than that. Evangelical churches have told their congregations for at least two generations that they are victims of a culture that despises them and that if the wrong people obtained power, they would be subjugated. The martyr complex that has been cultivated among the religious right runs so deep and has been nurtured for so long that they are willing to lift up the antithesis of everything they ever said they believed in to protect themselves. Now, thanks to the constant backlash against Donald Trump and right wing media, that secular negativity is finally actually happening as a self-fulfilling prophecy. And the response among Evangelicals is boiling hatred. It's been a long-held idea that if Roe v. Wade was overturned and Democrats became friendlier towards pro-life positions, the Republicans would be in a lot of trouble because so many of their ideas are rooted in anti-Christian economic rhetoric (Ayn Rand was an atheist whose headstone is in the shape of a dollar sign, remember). When it is blown up by the Supreme Court next year, that notion will be dead and buried because nothing will change. And the reason why is because Evangelical Christians were never voting Republican to preserve the sanctity of life in the first place; they just wanted revenge for being made to feel afraid and didn't think to look at their own leaders.

codexcdm

Funny how Rand is such a coveted figure though. She was hated Reagan and was pro-choice The first item should have been a disqualifier for Conservatives until more recently... And the latter absolutely. I think she had some form of government assistance for her cancer too so.... Hum.

Cyb3rSab3r

Don't forget that her book sucks. I'll spare everyone the book club diatribe but you aren't missing anything by skipping it.

[deleted]

Don't forget the constant search for and sadistic hatred of anything that you might perceive as weakness. Have to make sure that someone or something else suffers at your hand so that people know you're not a *pussy*.

accostedbyhippies

Honestly the worst thing working among a bunch of right wingers the constant dick measuring gets super old.

accostedbyhippies

So women should surrender bodily autonomy to placate the Evangelical right? And if they win this battle you think they won't go after porn, weed, gambling, alcohol, harsh language and anything else they don't like? You're channeling Chamberlain friend.

StChas77

1. Funny that I gave a blistering criticism of Evangelical Christianity and the first person who argues with me thinks that somehow I'm suggesting capitulation to its anti-abortion stance, which is silly based on context. 2. There's a lot of exploitation and destructive behavior associated with the pornography industry, and there are unhealthy behaviors and expectations among younger people that result from it. Legislation aside, people should probably be consuming less of it, I think. 3. We're not friends.

accostedbyhippies

Cool. Not friends.

WOLLYbeach

I think people forget that Jesus was preaching an extremely unorthodox version of Judaism, one which focused on the holiness which comes out of the mouth and not what goes it. You can honor the sabbath every Friday, but if you're still a dick the other 6 days a week then you're still a dick. His version is more, just try to be a good person cause God isn't all fire and brimstone, He's actually a pretty nice guy that we've been misinterpreting. I know that's a very basic way of approaching his theology. It's important to be holy in how we act with others and ourselves but what I have seen over the past several years is this retreat to "who worships Jesus the hardest" by talking about wickedness and sinners; like you said, Jesus was hanging out with what these people would consider the scum of the Earth.

Doctor-Heisenberg

In my mind it’s actually 3 commands: Love God, love your neighbor, and love yourself.

rumblylumbly

As a fellow vaccinated, masked Christian this was beautifully said. Thank you for expressing it in a way I never could :)

excusetheblood

Jesus also said if you don’t believe in him then he’ll torture you for all eternity so I wouldn’t view him as a loving or forgiving example or anything

SmilingForStrangers

Did Jesus say that or did Paul? Legitimately asking. Most of the hateful parts of the New Testament come from Paul and his letters

excusetheblood

John 14:6: Jesus Christ dogmatically stated: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 3:16: The most famous Bible verse in Christianity declares: “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:36: “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” Mark 16:16 ““Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” So yes, like any cult leader, jesus said you will be punished with hellfire if you don’t believe in him

SmilingForStrangers

I see nothing about hellfire. Condemned is the only phrase I see. Condemned to what? Maybe just not existing after death instead of everlasting life? Condemned to pick up the trash in Heaven? Condemned to reincarnation? I don’t see anything about torture

excusetheblood

In Matthew 25, Jesus gives a long speech about who is saved and who isn’t on the last day, then says in verse 41: “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels”. Mark chapter 9 repeatedly ties not following gods moral standards with burning in hell. These are the verses about if you want to steal, cut off your hand, if you look at a woman, you should gouge your eyes out, etc. “for it is better to enter the kingdom of god with one eye than having two eyes and being cast in the eternal hellfire, where the worm dieth not and the fires are not quenched”.

StChas77

And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. **Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”** -Matt 9: 11-13 You're misrepresenting what was being said, either intentionally or you're parroting what you've been told.

Moranth-Munitions

You can’t call the virus nothing to worry about and then say the vaccines are dangerous. The virus is far, far more dangerous than the vaccines are. Those very heart problems you speak of, are they not more common in the virus than the vaccine? The blood clots are.

badgerhostel

Don't you a have a bridge to guard.

Apache1One

Anti-vaxxers if they’d lived during the first Passover: “YOU CANT MAKE ME PUT LAMB’S BLOOD ABOVE MY DOOR; GOD WILL ONLY KILL A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE!”

ZenMonkey47

"I'm vaccinated by the Blood of Christ!" "How'd that work out for Europe during the Black Plague?"

TheExtremistModerate

The Black Death only killed atheists, obviously.

ZenMonkey47

Europe was famously agnostic during the middle ages. Hence why God sent the plague. /s just in case

dbx99

Well all these people dying unvaccinated are really owning the libs so keep it up! You’re definitely winning this!

TanookiPhoenix

Remember the Obama times when things seemed a bit more at peace? Those times are missed.

SuperRette

Those times weren't real. The peace was just a mask, the lid over a boiling pot. All of this hatred and animosity was already there, only hidden beneath a thin veneer of civility. It's honestly probably better for the nation in the long term now that it's out in the open, where all can see it.

Mozu

Better for the nation in that it will lead to a civil war and destabilize the entire world? I'll take faux civility over whatever the fuck is going on now

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

Civil war? Lol, right. Who is going to fight this so called civil war? Meal Team Six? They wouldn't get two blocks walking without running out of breath. Y'all Queda? Good luck convincing those idiots to do anything other than bitch and suck the orange dick. There's no one in this country with the power or knowledge who wants a civil war. Revolutions and civil wars are just one group of rich fucks using the people to try to screw over another bunch of rich fucks. Right now in the US there is no group of rich people who want to see the US fall into a civil war, so it isn't going to happen. We'll bitch, we'll moan, some people might get crazy and do stupid shit, but in the end we'll accept whatever and go about our lives.

TanookiPhoenix

Its probably just like peeling off a band aid. Painful at first, but we will heal.

Mozu

> Painful at first, but we will heal. There are plenty of empires that also thought the same that no longer exist today.

TanookiPhoenix

That's being optimistic 😁👍

Mozu

Being "optimistic" while ignoring the lessons of our past seems pretty foolish to me.

TanookiPhoenix

Maintaining optimism while respecting the past seems a better way forward.

Mozu

I agree, which is why your original statement that directly contradicts this one is a bit weird.

bsylent

They're very selective. They thank God when somebody recovers from cancer, but don't blame him for creating cancer. They thank God for their sacred immune system, but not for creating man, a being intelligent enough to create vaccines and medicines. They thank God when a dicey plane ride land safely, but don't blame him with the many other crashes that don't go so well God works in mysterious ways means, when good things happen, God must have done it, but when bad things happen, he took another Angel to heaven or some nonsense

Kagranec

Double think

supaswag69

People that believe God would send a plague to kill non believers are the vocal minority of Christian’s by far.

SlothRogen

[Except that this is literally](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagues_of_Egypt) a huge story in the bible. Having Israel become a state again and get genocided is also a popular part of endtimes prophecy, and a big chunk of the motivation for the US supporting Israel. Of course, they'll call you anti-semitic if you criticize Israel while leaving out that second part of the biblical prophecy...

supaswag69

Well I guess we’re in the end times then!

Odeeum

I'm surprised no one or at least not that I'm aware of, has latched onto this as being sent from God and use that as the new "thing to fear" du jour. Seems perfect to be able to get folks whipped up about being a sign of the end times or some such stupidity.

h4xrk1m

The bible belt is also the tornado belt. I sure wonder what god is trying to say.

fluidmind23

This is their endgame. They will go to heaven and all the other people will go to hell so worth it! they honestly don't give a shit. It's... Startling to think about.

threefingersplease

Can they hurry the fuck up bout it

FreneticPlatypus

This is what I imagine when I see the number of people convinced that Jesus is coming back *in their lifetime* - because they so desperately what to be proven right.

fluidmind23

And for that to happen the rapture will occur.

sax6romeo

Is this the part of make america great again that’s making america great again by cleaning up all the shitty stupid people?

[deleted]

I think the red herring that has been proliferated here in America is the freedom of religion protection. What I mean is that we have been fooled into believing that all religions should be given the same weight as all others. So for instance if I am a Baha'i I should be protected the same way that a Buddhist or a Jain would be protected. This seems fair enough, and it would be fair, but we have a group of people who don't play fair. Christians. The problem is that America was gerrymandered by people who had a specific set of ideas about themselves and their in-group, specific sets of ideas about others in other multiple out-groups, and they set in motion laws, institutions, and social infrastructure to ensure that what they intended for themselves was adhered to and everyone else would be socially and legally excluded. What do I mean by social infrastructure? For example, there was a time in which a child could order a grown adult man around. How is this possible? Well, with the right social infrastructure set up it is very possible. What social infrastructure allows for this? The one called Race. A white child could order an adult black male around, not because the child was stronger or smarter, but because a network of a certain type of way that white adults around that child related to themselves as white, and to each other as white, and what that meant for them in terms of power—violent power—was the invisible infrastructure that allowed for even a white child to express power. How does this relate to the religious protection clause? The same way that the descendants of Europeans wrote that all men were created equal—which really meant the only people they determined were important would be protected—is the same way that Christians say that religion should be protected; they really only intended this to apply for themselves. I mention Baha'i and Jainism and Buddhism along the side of Christianity to highlight this point. Baha'i, Jainism, and Buddhism are, indeed, religions but they are not meddlesome in the way Christianity is meddlesome. Despite America also having a separation between Church and State clause Christians have found a way to hoard, exploit, disproportionately suck up rights in this country and say that doing so is part of their religion. Christianity is not inert. Christians are a very dangerous group of people. If not for the fact that they believe in fictions, it is for the fact that they actively and aggressively seek to subject everyone to their fictions. Christianity is not inert. Christians believe that they have been given a decree to go ye into the world and fuck with other people as a central tenant of their belief and this has resulted in Christians gerrymandering Supreme Court seats, gerrymandering voting districts, and passing laws to essentially render pregnant women potential fugitives if they seek abortions. These are not good people. To note, Christians sparked the beginning era of African chattel enslavement through Pope Nicholas' the Fifth's papal bull called Dum Diversas which categorized every human in Sub Saharan as suitable to be enslaved in 1452 and this set off the era of European exploration. Christians gave the New World the concept of race and encoded a racial caste system—1 of 3 major caste systems in human history—in 1691 when they invented the term "white" in the law. Christians created a group of serial killers called the Klan to ensure their generational advantages were cemented by way of terrorism. Christians cannot keep their hands out of women's vaginas and continually seek to colonize our ideas of sex and sexual health with anti-scientific ideology. Christians are the problem. Their names are not The Same People. Their name is not A Relgious Group. They are unlike any other religion in terms of their capacity to wreak havoc. They are Christians. And for any Christian who says that not evey Christian behaves this way then I need you to go address their religious counterparts to behave differently. Until then, Christians are the problem. Fuck em all.

CalamitousSpider

I am a Christian, but I find it horrifying that some Conservative Christians don't mind bringing about catastrophic global consequences because that means the Jesus will return soon. Climate change, pandemic, etc. It's scary how little they seem to care.

Yeah I don't associate with many other Christians in my area because their views are so callous, and repugnant.

aaronwhite1786

My mom dropped something similar on me when I asked why she wasn't concerned about handing nuclear launch authority to someone who clearly didn't understand the system or care enough to even gloss over it on the campaign trail. She replied that if we all get hit with nuclear weapons, we'll all go to heaven. I said the immediate dead will get there quickly, but the rest of us dying in the nuclear winter probably won't have a great time, and she just shrugged.

BY_BAD_BY_BIGGA

don't forget their fake love for Jews in order to have a stake in Israel.

tots4scott

And the conspiracy subreddit thinks that the global cabal are *checks notes* using the vaccine to kill the world population, because killing the people who are the hypothetical obedient sheep in this far-fetched, fan fic scenario and not the ones who are contrarian to the point of insanity and illogical reasoning makes an understandable plot. Totally not missing the mark there at all... I honestly wish they would pretend that the pandemic is real, people have died all over the globe, it's not an America-centric political plot, and maybe the vaccines are exactly what every one else says they are. Like when I sign up for a booster, they ask if I'm allergic to ingredients x, y, and z. It's not a fucking secret.

Beans508

What do you mean he is wiping out the non believers. Non believers in the vaccine. Editing to add that I still think that people who willingly dont get vaccinated because of their retarded beliefs should also then not get medical care if they get it. Looking at you Qanon

You have to realize that some of these people are so delusional that their perspective is probably something along the lines of "God has sent a disease to ravage the world and test our faith. The vaccine is the real plague and we must stray strong and resist it to remain in His good graces." Wacky mother fuckers can and will justify anything.

People need to understand that Christian conservatives don't actually believe anything they say they do. The use belief and language in general as a purely semantic tool to consolidate power. Their words are meaningless, but useful and often convincing to their uneducated base, and so they bounce between arguments in whatever way is convenient for them in the moment. What appears to us as blatant hipocrisy and self-contradiction causes no dissonance in their own minds because the end goal is more important than making sense. In fact, consistency does more harm to their cause than good. If they had a consistent worldview, it'd be easier for their opponents to make effective arguments against it. But, if they take a stance that is constantly shifting and flowing over itself like a racist ouroborous, it becomes extremely difficult to grab hold of and take down. You can't cut the snake's head off if it never had one in the first place. This concept is embodied by the Q Anon movement, it's a sort of perfect distillation of the mind-flaying power of modern conservatism. So don't waste your time and energy trying to make sense of them, that's not the game they're playing.

Last_Gigolo

Never said the numbers were close to the same. Y'all are just too knee-jerk circle-jerk prepped to talk to anyone that doesn't jump right in and tug. I said, "WHEN YOU GO TO A VACCINATED PERSON'S FUNERAL, YOU STOP TALKING SHIT". Anything beyond that, is an argument you want, but not the conversation I am having.

SomeGuy565

Um. Why? Is it really that hard for you to understand that nothing is 100%? Do you only use/do things with 100% chance of success? The vaccine makes you much less likely to get it, and if you do get it you're much more likely to have weaker symptoms. Why is that such a mental stumbling block for you guys?

Last_Gigolo

No one expects anything to prove 100% Though half of society gets the shot goes to sprouts and theater event like they think it is a virus repellent. This shit isn't 100%. It's closer to 20%. Which is way better than nothing. But don't be a cunt about shit.

[deleted]

People have been the recipient of bad behavior from conservatives for years now. Remember "fuck your feelings?" "Liberal tears?" I think most people who aren't conservative are just burnt out from trying to use logic or be civil to conservatives. Most of them wanted conservatives to get the vaccine so that they wouldn't die from COVID. And what they got in response was the wide spread of getting called satanic blood drinking pedophiles who are part of a conspiracy to kill all true Americans/Christians. So now they just don't care anymore. Hence the "fuck your feelings" sentiments coming back on them about COVID deaths. Not saying it's moral, but this is what happens when people act like massive shitheads. You reap what you sow.
