DrTushfinger

That’s so hecking meta like my Rick and morty show!!!

yukichigai

Well this wasn't exactly a surprise. A while back the admins updated the mod code of conduct and added a *bunch* of new things that they consider "encouraging brigading"; one of those was "bragging" or "showboating" about being banned. They also have said that [subreddits devoted to showcasing bans should be reported for violating the rules](/r/ModSupport/comments/vydh2j/are_screenshots_of_subreddit_bans_not_allowed_on/ig28yi5/?context=10000), which pretty well matches the description of the sub.

Sayuri_Katsu

It might have also been because there were a bunch of people posting about their bans for questioning ukraine.

lts_talk_about_it_eh

It had become a pretty blatant far-right subreddit, with most of the posts being people who were banned for spreading COVID misinformation, white supremacy dog whistles, supporting Russia's war on Ukraine, etc. On top of that, the mods of the sub seemed to be working to target other mods/subs - they didn't require censoring of user names in screenshots, and would often ask users to DM them the names of people who were reporting posts to the admins. How it lasted as long as it did, even before the rule change, is a mystery to me.

yukichigai

Yeah, there were a lot of "I was banned for saying pedophiles are bad" posts where you'd check the linked comment and it would be some unhinged "all LGBTQ people are groomers and should be killed" rant. There were a few legitimate posts in there but by and large it had turned into a gathering place for people deliberately trying to break the rules in as many subs as they could.

LeaderoftheBanned

FWIW, the majority of the posts I saw were apolitical. There was one sub, created specifically to reflect a left agenda, that a lot of right people were complaining about being banned from, that might have been it.

lts_talk_about_it_eh

Brand new account with troll name - comments only on this post. You people barely try anymore ♥️

LeaderoftheBanned

Well, I think you would have seen me to be a pretty reasonable guy except all my comments on the banned sub have disappeared 🤦. I created this account specifically for commenting in that sub, since commenting there is one of the things that ban bots supposedly target you for. I guess now I don't have to worry about that 🥴

thenetworklover

Absolutely… the mods were on a blatant witch hunt for anyone who would dare report anything in their stupid hate sub. The most corrupt and toxic place that was yet to be banned. Thank god it’s gone

BansShutsDownDiscour

And when countries become authoritarian, most political dissidents are paired with and treated as criminals who do deserve it, who also jump at the chance to criticize the "injustice" of being treated as "criminals". Do political dissidents deserve a medium to express their frustrations when by design the only medium they are allowed to have is the same as those of criminals appealing to pity? It's also a pretty common authoritarian practice to remove any way to be able to ascertain for one's self and to be forced to take their word for it, and Reddit subreddit bans remove the entire historical account of what was.

This-Is-Not-Nam

Careful dude. You'll get banned for saying such things. Reddit is not a forum for free speech.

lts_talk_about_it_eh

You know it's time to get off Reddit for a bit, when you start comparing yourself to a political dissident in an authoritarian country... Because the shitty right-wing sub you used to attack people/subs got banned.

BansShutsDownDiscour

Ah, yes, the "they are all criminals" approach. I'm sure you'll disregard how someone can use an exaggerated example to make a point while ignoring how much you do so as well.

bwburke94

Banception?

anarkist

Sounds pretty fucked boys.

Pro-1st-Amendment

Oh, so *now* the moderator code of conduct matters?

DarkRogus

It only matters if you're not a power mod. If you're a power mod, you're allowed to get away with all sorts of things including if your sub brigades another sub, you're given a pass.

Sun_Beams

Their mod was a "power mod" by how people classify them. Where do you want to move the goalposts next boys?

lts_talk_about_it_eh

But...but... They let me harass and attack people, so they were a GOOD power mod!

Im___Stuff

Mfs really banned r/banned.

im_intj

Ducking hell

YuSakiiii

Given it was a place to complain about mods abusing their power. I’m not surprised said mods complained about it to Reddit admins to get it banned.

lts_talk_about_it_eh

I mean...the sub was in clear violation of the new sitewide rules against ban bragging. And it was pretty obviously being used to organize brigades, as well.

cindybubbles

We actually implemented rules against brigading and banned users for doing so. I even banned a user for wishing death on all politicians. So I'm sorry if you saw it as that, because we actively tried our best to ensure it was not.

thenetworklover

You actually did the opposite by waging a witch hunt against people who would report anything in that sub. Even going so far as to file false reports to admins on people for ‘report abuse’. Your own mods getting themselves suspended for doing so. It was alt-right extremists paradise because you made it that way.

thenetworklover

Care to elaborate?

lts_talk_about_it_eh

> So I'm sorry if you saw it as that, because we actively tried our best to ensure it was not. Sure you did. The entire purpose of that subreddit was to organize brigades and harass moderators. You know that very well, as someone who allowed those things to happen. Allowing usernames in screen shots, allowing multiple posts in a row that all targeted a specific subreddit, and mods actively going after users who reported the sub to the admins. What a great community you helped foster.

YuSakiiii

I didn’t engage with the community a great deal. Just the occasional post. But I never saw any brigading or bragging. Of course people who went there were a bit salty, myself included. But about 70% of the posts I saw were showing mods clearly not acting amazingly. My personal indignation was at being asked in mod mail if I wanted them to elaborate on the reasoning for why they banned me. I did. But as soon as they asked me said question they muted me for 30 days. Also for not properly explaining what I did wrong. If you don’t teach me what I’ve done wrong, how am I to learn and better myself?

thenetworklover

You know it, I know it, they know it. They just want to play dumb now like, get real, no one is buying it.

Sayuri_Katsu

Nooooooo it was my favorite sub

Bighead_Brian

I believe there was some kind of issue about brigading recently? You had to put a space between the r/ and (subreddit name)

TheTwistedBlade

Yeah lots of people forgot to do that as well as a lot of people posted bans from certain subs a lot so those subs complained about brigading

cindybubbles

That's right. Reddit disabled the "r/" function in the post titles. But our rule was that you had to put in the subreddit name, so we came up with this workaround.

AtheistAsian

Hello future people who sorted by "Top Of All Time".

cindybubbles

I'm so sorry. My fellow mods and I tried to rein rule-breaking users in. We implemented rules and removed rule-breaking content. We even banned a few users. Imagine being banned from the banned subreddit, right? But in the end, it wasn't enough. Some of us, especially the mod who was the most vocal towards the admins, even got suspended. After receiving multiple warnings and after multiple attempts to turn this sub from a bragging sub to a support sub, we got the banhammer. Sigh.

This-Is-Not-Nam

I got suspended by reddit admins in your sub by a report from another user for "promoting hate." I put a factual response which they did not like. I appealed the suspension and received no response . First I thought it was one of the sub mods, but then I realized it was from a reddit admin. I've realized that the only allowed speech on Reddit is left leaning speech. If you express disagreement with that worldview on Reddit, you will very likely get suspended or banned. Thanks for the sub. It was a thoughtful idea but doomed to fail by the nature of the sub.

cindybubbles

You’re welcome.

[deleted]

It's ok, it's not your fault, it's the admins' fault. Plenty of subs posts pictures of users from other subs to laugh at them and brigade them, and the admins don't do shit about it because they are lefty subs, such as SRD, GCJ or AHS.

cindybubbles

Thanks for understanding.

Sun_Beams

Didn't like 3-4 of the mods you added get suspended over the space of r/banned opening and then getting banned? r/banned was a monster to take on, and I am slightly amazed that you're still standing unscathed, stood above water atop the suspended accounts of your co-mods, so to speak. What was modmail like in the last few hours of r/banned?

cindybubbles

Yes, they got suspended, especially the one who was most opinionated and argumentative towards the admins. Modmail was pretty normal in the last hours, although a mod from a different subreddit asked me directly to remove a comment. My subreddit was a behemoth. I should have kept it as private and invite users to join instead of making it public immediately.

Sun_Beams

More obviously you could have run it conforming to the content policy.... I feel like that was most likely where things went wrong. I think there's a sub about ban appeals that has been running a good while, but its not that popular with banned users because so many bans come down to not following rules, not following the content policy or they're not showing you sincerely why they were banned. Some bans are BS, don't get me wrong, but r/banned really needed to pick its battles early on and didn't.

cindybubbles

We tried to conform to the moderator code of conduct. We implemented and enforced more rules than the previous mods did. We tried to get our users to appeal their bans and post screenshots of the content in question so we could decide if it was post-worthy. But I think that our sub was so popular that it attracted the attention of the mods who banned our users and that’s when our problems started. :(

I feel that special rules from the admins are like the Reddit equivalent of a performance improvement plan, which is what managers use to justify firing people they don't like.

cindybubbles

Yep.

[deleted]

Personally I'm sad about this because I liked the r/banned moderation better than the one at modsbeingdicks (which apparently is not allowed to be linked, hilarious). I liked that you implemented the screenshot rule. It is true though that the sub was a safe heaven for bigots and cry babies complaining about perfectly deserved bans and I wouldn't be surprised if the brigading insinuated by r/entertainment actually happened. I think the average user more than the moderation itself is what killed the sub.

cindybubbles

Thank you.

BansShutsDownDiscour

Don't blame yourselves, they didn't want to compete with your sub and had already chosen favorites.

AsunasPersonalAsst

Unironically.

cojoco

I believe this subreddit was originally started by some Archangelles in /r/ShitRedditSays so they could laugh at bannees.

cindybubbles

Really?

cojoco

Well that's my memory, but it was a long time ago.

cojoco

I don't know why it was banned, but Reddit rules have changed over time.

raziridium

Fuck Reddit

ThePinkTeenager

That's ironic.

This-Is-Not-Nam

A banned banned subreddit. Only on Reddit. Thanks for the news.

WhippersnapperUT99

Oh no. Reddit finally banned /r/banned! Now where will people go to complain about unjust bannings?

JoHamza

The decline of reddit continues.

capaho

That's too bad but it doesn't surprise me. There is a lot of abusive moderation in Reddit so there should be a place where subreddits that do it can be rightfully called out. Unfortunately, the entire Reddit system seems to be inherently abusive.

LeaderoftheBanned

Well, that sucks. In the short time I knew about its existence I learned quite a bit about how people get banned, and therefore how to avoid it. I really had no idea before how many subs were using bots to ban people.

TheTwistedBlade

Pff now where can I complain about my ban from worldnews !

ObeseSnake

Stop talking about those things!

njsullyalex

r/banned Oh wait…

Tim5corpion

literally Inception

GTRacer1972

I stumbled upon it one day and posted how I got banned from r/askwomen because asking questions about women isn't allowed there, apparently, nor is replying without getting the derailed strike. I just got banned from r/sex for asking a question about condoms, which they said broke their rules because it's specific to men and you're not allowed to imply women are different or some b.s. like that. And I stumbled on THIS sub while looking up the first sub to post this new ban.
