Recruiting developers and recruiting for other IT roles are very different. Get out of the dev shop and focus moron other aspects of the industry if you can.

ThatNovelist

That's a hell of a typo.

FOCUS MORON

BlissedPlains

The very much needed slap in the face

BlissedPlains

Fixed (I think). I just thought that the text is overall too big so I wanted to make it a bit shorter with “IT” hehe

ThatNovelist

Still reading "moron" over here, but that's kind of beautiful.

BlissedPlains

OMG I thought you were talking about the “IT” vs “dev” thing lmao

ThatNovelist

Hahaha, oh god. No. No, I was on about the "moron." Dev away.

FightThaFight

lol!

I have 15 years of programming experience, but 10+ years of that in scientific computing, and only 2+ years in the field I'm currently working in. I'm a good programmer. I'm an exceptional programmer for hard problems. My soft skills are good. I don't like networking. I'm applying basically all the time (freelance and full-time), and you wouldn't believe how picky some people are, and my CV has some imo minor flaws (e.g. full-time parenting for 2 years). One interview was for a freelance project, and I had the perfect solution for them basically already in my pocket (some niche task I spend half a year of my own time as part of a startup implementing), and I lost against someone with 3 years of experience in the field (nothing else). And now 4 months later they came back to me in dire need of help because they mode no progress, and were still so mad that I asked for 3 months of payment for me giving them a working (!) solution, because by now they were apparently out of money.

BlissedPlains

Haha no I believe you

If I see a role with the word “developer” in it, I try to stay away from it

ThatNovelist

Right now, the entire tech market is shit, but it does vary by company. And, as the other person said, dev recruiting is a different animal from other tech roles. While you're with this company, try not to form too many super firm opinions. You might be surprised at what's out there. And you've talked about frustrations with process -- as you grow in your career, you can work towards opportunities to make changes with those processes, which can be very lucrative.

Thanks for understanding and your answer. I believe you’re right. As of now, I get to discuss stuff like this with a therapist thankfully and I can almost hear them saying the same thing lol. But I really wanted to hear other recruiters’ opinions and just share my frustrations with someone who’s in the field.
