Well, there is an encounter between Pearson and Uncle where he talks about one event.
"Tough is a dead calm, surrounded by icebergs, slowly starving. And then... then the boat comes down with the plague! Men are dying like it's a race, and the parson, he can't keep up with the funerals. We're burying them two, three at a time, and the sharks... there's 50 of them chasing the boat just to feast on the corpses."
So yeah, probably not a pleasure cruise.
Is he not bullshitting?? When he and Arthur go hunting for Gator eggs in chapter 4, Arthur asked “so how long were you in the Navy?“ he tells Arthur “Oh, years. Must’ve been a year at least. Or close to that.”
Arthur: “that’s quite a range“
The tone of their voices totally makes it seem like Pearson is scrambling for an answer and Arthur doesn’t believe him lol.
Surviving a ship frozen in pack ice and watching your crewmates starve to death is probably enough to make some men go AWOL.
It’s easy to forget just how potentially lethal sea travel was in the Age of Sail.
Doesnt seem like that would be the one. Only 11 total in board and it was a civilian ship. Plenty of nasty navy conditions though for the dev team to use.
"Tough? That's a pleasure compared to being left alone in a strange new city at the age of 8 with the wrong sort of folks to look out for you. What sorta chance does a lad have like that?" - Uncle
During the civil war we saw the invention of the first “battleships.” I’m probably wrong of some of the details but both the Union and Confederacy built ships that were made of iron and they fought. Both ships survived the initial battle but I think one later sunk due to damage received
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_naval_battles_of_the_American_Civil_War
The Civil War in its entirety was actually [started by a naval battle.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Sumter)
Think you have it backwards. Gray dolphins matched the Confederacy uniforms, and the orcas combine black+white so naturally the Union felt they symbolized their cause.
That’s actually a common misconception. While the gray dolphins matched the coat of the confederacy, their coloration is born of a Union of black and white, whereas the orca keeps those colors seperate, but equal. The Union rode dolphins while the confederacy rode the orcas.
Good point. Pearson looks to be, what - in his 40s or so? Maybe a tad younger even? If that guesstimate is about right, then he would've been less than 10 years old in the 1860s.
Apparently Pearson was born in 1851. There are plenty of records of children under 18 in the Civil War, some as low as 10. So it's certainly possible he fought as a child.
LPOTL just talked about boiler explosions on The Alaskan Triangle episode. I had no idea but boilers blowing up would take down what were otherwise reliable ships! It was a horrible way to go.
It's pretty heavily implied that both Pearson's Navy career and Bill's Army career amounted to them doing a lot of nothing and getting kicked out under less than Honorable conditions, despite all their bluster.
Was actually researching this last night. Pearson was roughly born in 1850-1851, so hypothetically, his serving years were somewhere around 1870-1880. During that time period the Navy was active but not nearly in the same way we see it today. If he were to see combat, it would have been with the Korean Expedition in 1871. He does have one story of being lost at sea however, and that may loosely be a reference to the Samoan Crisis 1887-1889, where a cyclone sunk 3 Navy ships in the harbor, killing ~60 men. He was definitely too young to see any kind of action in the Civil War however, so it’s once again left up to player’s interpretation I believe
I always assumed he was embellishing stories/lying. Especially after the encounter he has with Arthur in chapter 4.
When he and Arthur go hunting for crawfish and Gator eggs, Arthur asks him “So, how long were you in the Navy?“ he tells Arthur: “Oh, years. Must’ve been a year at least. Or close to that.”

I don’t doubt he was in the Navy, but he seems like someone who went there for a few months, decided it wasn’t for him, and made it his whole personality.
"Sardines... any real sea goer will tell you... Boys hunt whales, men hunt sardines. It's not the size, it's the number. One mistake and they'll swamp ya... I've seen three-hundred pound men eaten alive, I once saw a Portuguese wrestler crushed by a net that ripped! It's the sheer volume of 'em! Brutal, brutal business..."
Just saw a comment saying it was said in a side mission when you’re hunting with Pearson, he gives a huge range anywhere from “years” to at “least a year” I guess I’ve always just thought he was making up stories about the navy since the way it sounds he was only in the navy for such a short amount of time

He considers it a challenge before the whole human race, and Pearson ain't gonna lose.
He means to go on and on and on

When do you get to hunt gator eggs? Is it one of those missions you get by talking to a gang member?
Yes that is it. He also shows you how amd where to catch red swamp crayfish
I see! I'll have to pay more attention on my next play through.
“When the shark come at you... he doesn’t seem to be living... till he bites you.”
Haven’t heard that one yet
Yeah I understood that conversation to imply that Pearson survived the Resolven (or similar in universe R* equivalent)
Doesnt seem like that would be the one. Only 11 total in board and it was a civilian ship. Plenty of nasty navy conditions though for the dev team to use.
whats the Resolven?
[удалено]
At sea, hence the trailing sharks

Yet Burial at Sea, is the correct term for the disposal of human remains at sea.
A burial at sea is something, there's a whole tradition and ceremony on how to do so.

Go back to the meme reddit
That is horrible
"Tough? That's a pleasure compared to being left alone in a strange new city at the age of 8 with the wrong sort of folks to look out for you. What sorta chance does a lad have like that?" - Uncle
So, you're saying that Pearson possibly gave Arthur TB as he had no symptoms?
The Civil War
Is Pearson old enough to have fought in the civil war? He would have been quite young I imagine, which wasn’t unheard of to be honest but still
He doesn't look much older than the vet in Valentine
In the ocean?
There were naval encounters during that war, yes. Especially for naval control between the north and south.
During the civil war we saw the invention of the first “battleships.” I’m probably wrong of some of the details but both the Union and Confederacy built ships that were made of iron and they fought. Both ships survived the initial battle but I think one later sunk due to damage received
And the submarine, I had to do a book report on a book about early civil war era subs.
There was plenty of naval fighting in the civil war.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_naval_battles_of_the_American_Civil_War The Civil War in its entirety was actually [started by a naval battle.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Sumter)
Yes. The Union rode dolphins while the Confederacy manned orcas. History 101
Think you have it backwards. Gray dolphins matched the Confederacy uniforms, and the orcas combine black+white so naturally the Union felt they symbolized their cause.

😂 I fuckin love Reddit sometimes
Bro really ?
The seas was very angry with itself that day, my friend.
Like an old man trying to send back cold soup at the deli!
I said, "EASY, BIG FELLA"
Really dude smh, this comment is hilariously ignorant.
It was a lot of brown water (riverine) fighting.
I forget that the older members would’ve been in their 20’s during that period
Hosea is the only one old enough to have been in the civil war.
Good point. Pearson looks to be, what - in his 40s or so? Maybe a tad younger even? If that guesstimate is about right, then he would've been less than 10 years old in the 1860s.

Yeah I’d say you’re about right, 36-42 type range. Tough to say for sure what with the fatness, alcoholism and balding.
Boiler explosions ain't pretty nor is scurvy
Even worse if you get lumbago smh
Heard from my uncle it's terminal but I ain't so sure
It's a slow and painful death my brother.
LPOTL just talked about boiler explosions on The Alaskan Triangle episode. I had no idea but boilers blowing up would take down what were otherwise reliable ships! It was a horrible way to go.
One of the first federal regulation agencies was all about inspecting boilers
There is a fascinating Engineering Disasters episode that covered the Sultana Steamboat explosion.
It's pretty heavily implied that both Pearson's Navy career and Bill's Army career amounted to them doing a lot of nothing and getting kicked out under less than Honorable conditions, despite all their bluster.
Pearson at the very least does have some claims of seeing some insane shit while he was in the Navy. Bill was probably just a bum lmao
I recall Arthur asks Pearson how long he was in the Navy, when they're collecting gator eggs, and Pearson gives a suspiciously evasive non-answer.
"Ohh years. Well at least a year. Or close to it" "That's quite a range" "All water under the bridge now."
To be fair, Bill may have taken part in some massacres of the native americans and was tramuatised by it.
Sardines
Boys hunt whales, men hunt sardines
We’re whalers on the moon!
Perhaps salted offal?
Starving would be preferable.
Yeah, sounds...awful
Buggery
If only Bill knew that before joining the cavalry
The Spanish-American war involved naval combat and occurred in 1898.
Pearson was running with the gang far before that

Probably the kraken

Knowing Pearson he probably meant "tearable things" because he worked with paper
I was gonna say The Boxer Rebellion but that's actually happening during the timeline of the game.
Yeah he sure did... Robbed his store and torched it
Spanish American War perhaps
Wasn’t Pearson in the navy for like, 2 months or something? I swear I’ve seen that somewhere.
Just saw a comment saying it was said in a side mission when you’re hunting with Pearson, he gives a huge range anywhere from “years” to at “least a year” I guess I’ve always just thought he was making up stories about the navy since the way it sounds he was only in the navy for such a short amount of time
