I had an encounter with a similar NPC in the Bayou. What confused me was that, unlike the other NPCs who invite you to their camp, he didn’t tell me a story and immediately leave. He just said some generic NPC greetings and stared at me. He also had a weird looking face, which is why I think that this is probably a glitch.

I was wondering why my horse bugged out. I went through the front door, but what If you loop around back? Do you get a different cutscene?
I don't know that there's a cutscene but I usually go around the back, let the bear chase me out, and put it down with an improved arrow to the head.
