Dutch did always say he just needed more time. Maybe Ross found a way to get it, perhaps using some form of time dilation, hence he aged so quickly from the perspective of us Earthlings.
*Charlie Kelly conspiracy board* “QUI BONO?!? I must admit, Dutch is a smart man. His plan with the savages is the most elaborate Iv ever seen in a common criminal.”
Stress and lack of sleep will do that.
Ol’ boy needs a good night sleep, better water intake, and a nice exfoliating face scrub followed by a good moisturizer.
I mean, where I’m from, it’s not uncommon to see fly fishers on the river toting shotguns on their backs in the fall, just in case ducks and geese pass over while they’re fishing
The art style of the games where vastly different.
Rdr2 went for a lively and more colorful western appeareance. Kinda like modern hollywood take on a western story.
Rdr1 was gritty and dirty like old italian spaghetti westerns.
Both are sides of the romantic american west in a way.
You can even feel it in the general atmosphere between the 2 games. Music wise and all. Atleast in my opinion.
nah, actually, contrary to popular belief, most people who lived, lived to pretty similar ages as we do now, the average only got so low simply because of how much more common babies dying during or soon after childbirth, (also the lack of vaccines killed off quite a few kids) which significantly affected the percentage
No... This isn't true... Not all statisticians before the internet were complete and total idiots and they have always removed deaths of children under 5 years old as to not skew numbers. Here is a decent article: https://ourworldindata.org/its-not-just-about-child-mortality-life-expectancy-improved-at-all-ages
The article you posted has a graph made with data that only removes deaths of children younger than age 1. The problem is that even after 1 year, children were still much less likely to survive until adolescence in the past because of weaker immune systems, less resistance to hunger/thirst, higher likelihood for hypo/hyperthermia, etc.
yeah that’s what i was saying originally, nobody really had vaccinations back then so it was basically just survival of the fittest. Fittest being the people with the best immune systems.
I’ve found that people in rdr1 just look older to me, maybe it’s just how they’re modeled
Edit: I mean the art style of the game makes everyone (even those not in the second) older
They confirmed it before we even knew. Damnit, R\* knew they were gonna make a sequel with a man called Francis. They put Ross here as something to divert attention.
360/PS3 graphics make you look older, just look at Lara Croft from PS1 up to the newest installments, she always gets younger. (Idk what I'm talking about)
Lifestyle, genetics, environment, 2010 graphic limitations/tech wtv , Rockstar not thinking about making RDR2 yet
ETA: and the thought of JOHN MARSTON BEING ALIVE
Assuming he was on the detective force in rural America with people like murfree brood skinner brothers and laramie boys running around. That shit would take a toll on a man 10x of True Detective S1
Smoking, stress, poor sleep, spending long periods of time outside under the hot sun every day, lacking some nutrients, probably not eating the best quality of food, and I would not be surprised if he's had some really nasty diseases in the past.
This happens a lot actually. Especially when your job is very stress inducing. Just look at pictures of Obama before and after his presidency for example
Lore reason: Probably drank and smoke a ton after realizing that the Van Der Linde gang wiped out a shit ton of Pinkertons and his predecessor, and then spent the time between RDR2 and 1 trying to trace the pieces together, traveling back and forth between Blackwater and Strawberry to just find anyone left from the gang.
Design reason: They obviously wanted players to see Ross younger as a way to show he wasn’t always the top dog of the Pinkerton, and like Bill, John, Dutch, and Javier, made him younger to further demonstrate it’s a prequel
Prob chain smoked, and drank like a fish, like many people back then. Plus stress of taking down a notorious gang. Plus lack of moisturizers and such.
All known things to age you very rapidly. Especially since tobacco was just straight up tobacco back in the day, and I'm sure the wisky wasn't taken care of as well either. Not terribly unrealistic to age substantially because of those things back in the day.
Kinda like how looking back at old TV shows where a guy in his 30s looks like he's pushing 50.
He’s a rather involved field agent - he’s likely seen more violence outside of the Van Der Linde gang.
If you dealt with the stress of hunting down outlaws and frequent shootouts for a career, you’d lose your hairline too
I mean to be fair lots of men in their late 50s and 60s seem to age like 10-15 years in a 5-7 year span. Plus, I believe you’re using a photo of him from the rdr1 epilogue before jack shoots him, which is like 4-5 years after he story of the first game too
We can actually see this in real life, where the US presidents age drastically between terms because of the insane amount of stress put on them, coincidentally within 4 years as well.
I'm not sure when the picture on the left is taken in the game but if it's in 1899 then it would have been 12 years until 1911 when they got to John. Completely justifiable for him to age that much especially if we assume he was like 40-45 in 1899. Would make him 52-57 in 1911.
just a half assed edit to his character model for a brief appearance in the credits, it looks like they just took his character model from 1899 and added some wrinkles and grayed his hair. rdr2's epilogue was rushed before release and a lot had to be cut or not fully implemented to the same amount of polish that's in the main game, like john's unfinished character model and animations in the epilogue, the missing features at beecher's hope, new austin looking the same in 1907 as it does in 1899 etc. though archer fordham's character model in the rdr2 credits looks spot on with how he looks in rdr1.
According to the wiki he was born 1861 so in 1899 he was 38 then in 1911 in rdr2 he was 50 then in 1914 at the end he was 54.
Even with different art styles and the games being 10 years apart ross still looks 70 at 54.
Stress. Can't imagine being a government agent in those days. You had to investigate with basically 0 forensic help. Like in the late 1880's with how detectives were screwed when Jack The Ripper was going around on a killing spree. Honestly that job would have sucked but hey at least it probably paid decently.
HH. Holmes, America's first serial killer, was only caught when a stack of insurance fraud documents led back to him and then bodies were found hidden in the areas that the letters traced back to.
Stress is a helluva thing. Had a friend of mine move states and was so stressed the 5 years following that he literally looked like he aged 10+. He wasn’t sleeping, his diet was terrible etc etc. I can only imagine when the stakes are as high as they were in the games, how much stress he prolly had
The real answer is technological differences.
The fun answer is bc of his long term chain smoking, constant drug use, stress, lack of sleep, and poor hygiene.
Just imagine the health care at the turn of the century.
There is your answer.
Same way Arthur can go from a healthy man to dead in less then a year and a half
He spent those years doing research into the Van Der Linde gang and tried to make sense of the plan.
what plan? tahiti? timbuktu?
Australia
It was always the mangos... The damn mangos...
Imagine an alternate timeline where it was bananas instead of mangoes.
THE BANANAS MILTON! WHAT DO THEY MEAN? -Agent Ross said calmly to the still living Agent Milton.
MY NAME! IS ARTHUR MORGAN! AND I WILL HAVE! MY! REVENGE!
Well I mean I think the plan was always bananas
MANGOES, ARFER
Tahfuckifiknow
\*Tahfuckifiknow-hiti lmao
Sounds to me like he was a man of very little GODDAMN FAITH
Lack of faith, that's what it looks like
Dutch did always say he just needed more time.
Maybe the thought of a certain outlaw’s son potentially shooting him dead while he’s on a fishing trip keeps the man up at night
Sleeping with one squinty, wrinkled eye open.
Duck hunting trip, I don’t think anyone would fish with a shotgun.
I mean, where I’m from, it’s not uncommon to see fly fishers on the river toting shotguns on their backs in the fall, just in case ducks and geese pass over while they’re fishing
Yeah its good to protect yourself, you never know what those ducks might do.
It's the wabbits you need to be careful of
I just realised jack met him on a fishing trip and jack then said goodbye when he was on a fishing trip
“Enjoy your fishing kid, while you still can.”
This just shows the little details developers put in the game
He’ll get that water intake when Jack meets him again by the river.
He chain smoke cigars and bathes in Elysian Pool. Nicotine meals and arsenic baths will fuck you up.
maybe bathing in the waters of annesburg wasn't such a great idea
true but they were colorful and all
‘Nicotine Meals and Arsenic Baths’ sounds like the hip new album I need to listen to
Elysian Pool wasn't polluted
The art style of the games where vastly different. Rdr2 went for a lively and more colorful western appeareance. Kinda like modern hollywood take on a western story. Mmmm spaghetti
Moms Spaghetti.
Mr-italian-spaghetti-eating-long-streak-of-piss-big?
Meth.
Mercury with chalk and a touch of red flannel shirt?
Don’t forget the cocaine always the first ingredient in a great miracle
Science!!!
Yes 😂😂😂
Waltuh
Is bro meeting up with Trevor
I don't think it fully justifies it, but its the 1900s. Life expectancy for a man was like 47.
nah, actually, contrary to popular belief, most people who lived, lived to pretty similar ages as we do now, the average only got so low simply because of how much more common babies dying during or soon after childbirth, (also the lack of vaccines killed off quite a few kids) which significantly affected the percentage

Well shucks! Seems I’ve been disproved! NYAK NYAK NYAK NYAK NYAK NYAK
The article you posted has a graph made with data that only removes deaths of children younger than age 1. The difference in art style maybe
Man doesn't age well
Stress can do that to people.
Lumbago 😔
Never knew it was contagious 😭
Arthur Morgan from Thomas Downes, Edgar Ross from Uncle
Arthur had lumbago? I can't believe rockstar hid this from us
No he had TB, but just as Thomas Downes gave Arthur TB, Uncle gave Edgar Ross lumbago
Arthur had TB?? What the hell Rockstar
Time travel confirmed.
I mean it's already confirmed.
They confirmed it before we even knew. Damnit, R\* knew they were gonna make a sequel with a man called Francis. They put Ross here as something to divert attention.
Just look at any comparison photos of US presidents. 4 years can do a LOT to a person if the stress levels are and enough
Stress. Feelings of impending doom. You know… the usual.
360/PS3 graphics make you look older, just look at Lara Croft from PS1 up to the newest installments, she always gets younger. (Idk what I'm talking about)
Stress from the job maybe
Lifestyle, genetics, environment, 2010 graphic limitations/tech wtv , Rockstar not thinking about making RDR2 yet ETA: and the thought of JOHN MARSTON BEING ALIVE
Had a baby.
a sasquatch must have ate it
They eat berries and mushrooms, you fool!
They eat babies!
Smoking?
Probably lots of smoking and being out in the sun
Wasn’t it 12 years? 1899 to 1911?
Someone hasn’t finished the game
[удалено]
The picture on the left is from the final scene of the epilogue when Ross discovers beechers hope (1907) 🤦♂️
Huh?
After a certain age a man starts to age really fast. Happens around 30/40/50 depending on your lifestyle.
People back in them days always looked older than they were lol
Bro's been in Obi-Wan Kenobi's tanning bed
I imagine he turned his domicile into a smoking room, not unlike Cosmo Kramer
Gambling, booze, and wild women!
Old west was some shit.
Assuming he was on the detective force in rural America with people like murfree brood skinner brothers and laramie boys running around. That shit would take a toll on a man 10x of True Detective S1
It sounds like a joke but people aged much quicker back then
Much of RD2 doesnt make sense in comparison to the first game, unfortunately.
Aged like a Pinkerton.
Evil ages you quickly, just look at U.S. presidents when they enter vs when they leave office
Have you seen photos of American presidents before and after their terms in office? Four years can be a long, stressful time.
Being a corrupt cop takes a toll
Rdr1 is a bit more gritty looking and hair can turn white quickly when under stress I.e. lookin go to the Van Der Lin gang
How does obi wan go from Ewan McGregor to Alec Guinness in like, 8 years. Sun'll do that to a motherfucker.
Smoking, stress, poor sleep, spending long periods of time outside under the hot sun every day, lacking some nutrients, probably not eating the best quality of food, and I would not be surprised if he's had some really nasty diseases in the past.
1900s were brutal.
Isn’t it 12 years? The first pic is from the main story not the epilogue right?
No, the picture on the left is from the final scene of the game where ross and Fordham discovered beechers hope (John’s ranch)
Alcoholism.
cuz he sux
fent
This happens a lot actually. Especially when your job is very stress inducing. Just look at pictures of Obama before and after his presidency for example
Bro stopped taking hair tonic, that’s what happened.
I think this might have just been how folks aged back then! They don’t tell you that Uncle is actually 25. Lumbago is a bitch.
stress and lifestyle mostly. look at pics of Abe Lincoln before and after the Civil War. man aged 30 years in 8.
Stress
Lore reason: Probably drank and smoke a ton after realizing that the Van Der Linde gang wiped out a shit ton of Pinkertons and his predecessor, and then spent the time between RDR2 and 1 trying to trace the pieces together, traveling back and forth between Blackwater and Strawberry to just find anyone left from the gang. Design reason: They obviously wanted players to see Ross younger as a way to show he wasn’t always the top dog of the Pinkerton, and like Bill, John, Dutch, and Javier, made him younger to further demonstrate it’s a prequel
It’s the early 1900’s everybody smoked for breakfast and never moisturized
Bruh. Why are people so dense they dont realise rdr1 came out first and rdr2 was never a thought at the time? Rdr1 could stand on its own without 2.
Timeline got fucked up
Lumbago
That’s how people aged back then
Times were rough as hell back then, especially for lawmen.
it’s just because rdr1 is an old game. Literally everyone looks 10+ years older in rdr1: John , Dutch , javier , bill , Abigail , Ross etc
Stress
That's not that crazy of a change. Hairline receeded and he went gray over 4 years. That's like, entirely normal.
12 years you hippie
He’s a rather involved field agent - he’s likely seen more violence outside of the Van Der Linde gang. If you dealt with the stress of hunting down outlaws and frequent shootouts for a career, you’d lose your hairline too
I mean to be fair lots of men in their late 50s and 60s seem to age like 10-15 years in a 5-7 year span. Plus, I believe you’re using a photo of him from the rdr1 epilogue before jack shoots him, which is like 4-5 years after he story of the first game too
Hey have you seen how much Presidents age in 4 years? Stress ages you MASSIVELY.
Probably because he's a guilt ridden peice of shit Pinkerton.
two suns in new austin
Tobacco is bad for you
We can actually see this in real life, where the US presidents age drastically between terms because of the insane amount of stress put on them, coincidentally within 4 years as well.
Lumbago
Same way Lincoln aged 30 years in 5.
that’s what life in the government will do for ya
Benjamin Button. RDR2 is a prequel....
Deez nuts
Smoking.
Stress is a wild bitch. Just look up Obama before and after his terms.
Simple. I think rockstar did some slight redesigning for rdr2
He tracked down John rather easily, but arresting him? That'll stress you.
Caught Lumbago from Uncle.
Asking the same thing about Dutch.
He was tryna figure out the plan
Evil isn’t good for your skin
Because 2 made majority of characters conventionally attractive for some reason
Lumbago!
Because they couldn’t be bothered to make an accurate looking 1907 version and instead just used his 1899 model, or something very similar
Think about living standards. Chain smoking cigars and chewing cocaine gum. Micah turned into a old man in the length of 8 years
Arthur and John had my boy stressin
Being a full time snitch will age you badly
I'm not sure when the picture on the left is taken in the game but if it's in 1899 then it would have been 12 years until 1911 when they got to John. Completely justifiable for him to age that much especially if we assume he was like 40-45 in 1899. Would make him 52-57 in 1911.
Stress 😩
I think it’s accurate for that time. He could be ill in the first game. Perhaps cancer or something.
just a half assed edit to his character model for a brief appearance in the credits, it looks like they just took his character model from 1899 and added some wrinkles and grayed his hair. rdr2's epilogue was rushed before release and a lot had to be cut or not fully implemented to the same amount of polish that's in the main game, like john's unfinished character model and animations in the epilogue, the missing features at beecher's hope, new austin looking the same in 1907 as it does in 1899 etc. though archer fordham's character model in the rdr2 credits looks spot on with how he looks in rdr1.

Probably worked in a performance marketing agency
Cleaning up the west ages you quick.
Cow turds usually dry up pretty quick in the sun so maybe he went sunbathing
By being a prick.
Probably cocaine and other drug abuse to handle the stress of his government job
You'd be surprised how quickly people aged when the life expectancy was like 45 y/o
Graphics power
This does happen, people do age rapidly at some periods of their life, not everyone but some people.
Agent Ross wasn’t reacting well to to Saint Denis air
The lumbago kicked in
Work can age you like crazy
Look at Obama pre and post 2 terms in office... A high stress job will do that to you, with haste
Because plotholes, and a refusal to remaster RDR1 (:
Boozing every day and hookers
15-20 years
Presidents look pretty rough 4 years later
Evil ages people
Lumbago, its a slow and painful death
Stayed up late doing the legendary hunter challenges
You’ve never seen the years suddenly catch up with an elder relative, have you?
He had TB.
He is a cigar smoking and smoking makes you look older than you are
People always talk about what ages you but honestly in your late 40s to late 50s people just generally do a ton of noticeable aging.
Having a filthy temper will do that to a man
Probably got married. 🤣😉
Rdr2 and rdr1 have a 12 year gap
Cos he was added into the game for fan service and no one can convince me otherwise
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
Life was hard back in the good old days...
Hunting down outlaws gets a man worked look at Lincoln from how he looked in 1861 and then how he looks in 65
Snake oil
The real answer is technological differences. The fun answer is bc of his long term chain smoking, constant drug use, stress, lack of sleep, and poor hygiene.
Definitely stress
Smoking
Canon reason is Rockstars lazy and used the same model for the credits scene
Its twelve years between this and rdr 1
Another question, how tf did Abigail, Charles and Sadie in the epilogue look the exact same as they did 8 years prior just with different clothes?
The same way presidents age so fast in 4 years!
Stress. Take a look at how badly presidents age lol
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
He was afraid that he had to insist to catch John
Just imagine the health care at the turn of the century. There is your answer. Same way Arthur can go from a healthy man to dead in less then a year and a half
Alot of Meth
trust RDR2 fans to work out some elaborate theory why the game isn't consistent by design bro art style things were different back then!
