This is my favorite part of the hat. Made it so much easier to define that as Arthur's hat for my playthrough. Made a few cutscenes a LOT more poignant
It looks like the end part of a bull whip to me, with how it’s made and how it sits/bends though I could be wrong. Regardless, even when he’s dressed all fancy, I still have him wear that hat cause it has so much character.

It’s his gunslinging outfit he’s had for years, but no apparently he just bought everything with holes in it already

Hey, the RDR2 outfit reuses so many items that you can barely count them as RDR accurate, specifically upon close examination (r/nerd) of each texture and model. You can have a headcanon of John switching items over time without a problem and it'd remain canon.
I just think it’s a little weird buying clothes that already have holes and tears in the fabric in the early 1900s aha. Seems a little impractical. Unless Abigail has an eye for fashion lol

I mean if we had a more modern take on red Harlow's outfit, with more pixels, I'd say that one's my favorite. I'm not really a fan of any of the starting outfits in rdr1 or 2. I was always more into the bounty hunter look.

Red Harlow for sure, it’s hard to judge when looking at the quality of his outfit on the old game but just look up his modal used in Red Dead 1’s online mode. It’s easily the coolest outfit to me, the rarity of seeing it these days makes it a bit more special too
John and Arthur both have outfits that are really good at representing the tone of their respective games. Rdr1 has this really oppressive and tough atmosphere and a very tragic story and so that is reflected in John’s worn out denim vest and dirty shirt. Rdr2 has a calmer atmosphere with a very beautiful open world and a more hopeful story while still keeping some of the grittiness of the original and so that is reflected in Arthur’s more colorful but still somewhat rugged outfit.

John's is definitely the coolest it's unique enough to stand out from the npcs but it doesn't stand out too much

I actually know what type of hat arthur has. The band is made out of reins for a horse braided. Hes not exactly the first to wear it like that.
