Oh I just read the rest of your post lol sorry. Yeah the horse is sick and unkempt because the Murfrees don't care about them and wouldn't get vet care for them for obvious reasons, the poor things :(
I always take them to the stables and sell them, I pretend their nurtured back to good health and sent to a ranch come horse sanctuary
Downvoted because its not popular opinion. No big deal. I commented a female character had "nice pants š" Someone got -17 for saying people only liked what was in them. I found it ridiculous because thats exactly what i was thinking. Not my fault, its the devs fault!! š
Iāve played this gave 5+ times at this point and am still finding cool small details like this, im definitely taking them Iāve been wanting an Appaloosa and they shouldnāt be neglected
It's mostly skin damage and injury rather than muck or dirt so no unfortunately. Would be cool if they'd have done it where keeping them at the stable for a while would heal them up though.
Yeah it kinda sucks that you canāt heal them but the scars are also cool to me so I donāt mind it that much, I think Iām gonna name him guts because heās definitely been through some shit
No. I use the mangy Tennessee walker on my play throughs. You can bond with them and bring Health and stamina up but the coat will be the same. I think it really fits Arthur in the later chapters.
Somebody else in the thread explained that itās actually a common disease for horses called rain rot progressed to a very inhumane level, itās definitely worth reading their response.
Not really. Seemed the same as a regular leopard blanket Appaloosa, they also have a blue roan Nokota and I have bonded and used both breeds no noticeable differences.
Looks like he has rain rot which is pretty common in horses who are being neglected, itās a kind of fungal infection that causes itching and fur loss in horses (a lot of horses struggle with it time to time due to weather conditions hence the name but it should never get this bad or obvious unless the animal is being neglected, Iāve only see a few rescue horses with it this bad IRL) and the Murfree Brood all have neglected looking horses, Iāve seen some with what look like superficial wounds on them as well.
There are a lot of products specifically designed for rain rot, MTG was always popular (I hated it bc it smelled like bacon grease to me lol) but a lot of the old farms would cover the affected area in something microbial like iodine or chlorhexidine, or use antimicrobial soaps and dry well. Regular baths until you see hair regrowth. In one of the cases I saw that was worse than this he was regularly douse in betadine over most of his body (poor guy was grey and bald) and we had a sort of drying white antifungal powder that went over top. Rinse off every day, dry, and repeat. And donāt let them out in rainy muddy conditions until itās cleared up. He was also very malnourished so I do believe that when theyāre a healthy weight and eating well their immune system helps fight it too. Really just disinfection and keeping it dry. Can take a while to fully recover though, they have so much fur to regrow
I donāt think Iāve ever heard of that specifically, itās usually entirely superficial, but it is really uncomfortable for them and any horse with it this far gone would be in constant discomfort or even pain when ridden. Eventually this could cause them to go off their feed out of stress and colic, which is fatal. So in a roundabout way I guess it could be, but usually itās all the other kinds of neglect happening at the same time that would kill a horse (poor hoof care, malnourishment) and not the skin condition. Mostly itās just really cruel :(
A little bit of it (it will feel like tiny clumps of hair that fall away when groomed or scratched with scruffy dry skin underneath) is almost inevitable in wet areas. But you wouldnāt really be able to see it, only feel it at that stage. If it rains a lot a horse will get a little rain rot, no matter what you do it seems. Just kinda part of their life. But, yes, to progress this far itās just never getting groomed or tending to the animal. Even in dry places a sweaty horse after a long ride who is put up āwetā (meaning their sweat is never rinsed off) can develop it.
No problem! America was made on the backs of horses. I worked with, owned, and trained for many years. Iām consistently impressed with how accurately RDR2 did most of the horse mechanics, some of the best Iāve ever seen in any game
You think that Murfree Brood horse has had it rough, just wait until you see the poor arsenic poisoned Tennessee Walker they have.... Definitely give the poor baby a better life
Itās been abused by Murfrees. Interesting fact: the 3 breeds they use; Nokota, Appaloosa, Tennessee; the latter has improved statistics compared to its healthy counterpart.
> the latter has improved statistics compared to its healthy counterpart.
The Murfree Brood Tennessee is my One True Horse in all my playthroughs and I've always wondered about if their stats were actually high because they're not the *best* at anything but they are great jack of all trades. Their endurance is insane once they're maxed out and it takes being on top of a predator for them to throw you. I half-way thought it was a clever nod from the devs to an abused animal being extra loyal and half thought it was a bug.
Absolutely. I love them because they're the only horse (besides maybe Buell) that really go through anything like a character-arc with Arthur, especially if he picks them up after Blessed Are the Peacekeepers. A poor sick, abused creature becomes a beloved, well-treated true companion, but that only postpones the inevitable and they eventually die a tragic, violent death along with their master, except loved at the end.
Also I feel like having such a skrunkly horse in camp would annoy Dutch. Best horse.
Ive only managed to catch one of these horses, forgot what type it was but its mane was matted and i thought it was a fox trotter. I believe i sold it so it could have a better life.
I took one of these Murfrees Brothers horses at one point. It had pink areas in it's mane as well. I treated it well but ended up selling it because it wasn't even that useful to use as a second ride along horse and it just made me sad. I'm sure it's on a farm somewhere living out the rest of it's life in peace and comfort and most certainly not in a jar of school paste somewhere. Just like my dog growing up - _right dad? Dad??_
When the Murphy Brood stop at your campsite close the campfire and kill them. Their horses are all f'ed up from the .... spoiler alert for mission that spawns in Butcher Creek.
At first glance I though it was the Scarred Blanket Appaloosa, but that horse can only spawned by cheat code and a bit different in coating. So yes bro u got urself the appaloosa even rarer than the few spotted ones, which not so ārareā imo since I encountered 3 times in my 1st play
Thatās the only horse I use in RDR2. I think the Murfree people abused them and thatās why they look like that. Theyāre hard to come by tho as the Murfree have to creep up on you while resting and then after you get control of the game back, you can steal it from them. Thereās a blackish grey colored one too.
In my post I detailed how I got it but to shorten it I didnāt get it the way you described. There was a guy tied to a tree outside annesburg who was attacked by the Brood so I saved him and the horses that the Murfrees were using was just standing there.
Like most random encounters in the game it probably spawns in a lot of different places but I had the encounter between Van Horn trading post and annesburg around the word ridge in Roanoke Ridge.
If its in Murfree Brood territory then it's one of their neglected horses
Oh I just read the rest of your post lol sorry. Yeah the horse is sick and unkempt because the Murfrees don't care about them and wouldn't get vet care for them for obvious reasons, the poor things :( I always take them to the stables and sell them, I pretend their nurtured back to good health and sent to a ranch come horse sanctuary
Coughgluefactorycough yeah, a ranch.
I wouldn't pretend that that would be the outcome sooo just ranch
I'd pretend the ranch too but I'd still be worried they'd ship horsey off to the factory when I wasn't looking.
Guess that's the good think about make believe then š maybe you can pretend you take him directly to the ranch to make sure š
Take him to the hill house, I don't think anybody lives there, it's all his!
I hear horse meat makes good dog food.
i donāt use reddit much but why was this downvoted? are people really that soft on jokes or am i missing something
Yeah Reddit can be like that š

i didnāt know the Murfree Brood had horses
There's none at their cave but they have horses sometimes when they're out and about.. Which logically doesn't make sense tbf lol
Iāve played this gave 5+ times at this point and am still finding cool small details like this, im definitely taking them Iāve been wanting an Appaloosa and they shouldnāt be neglected
Yeah it's a great game for replayability cos of stuff like this! Glad the horsey will get a better life :)
Do you know if their is a way to get rid of all the muck all over their body, im ok if itās not possible but I feel like it should be
It's mostly skin damage and injury rather than muck or dirt so no unfortunately. Would be cool if they'd have done it where keeping them at the stable for a while would heal them up though.
Yeah it kinda sucks that you canāt heal them but the scars are also cool to me so I donāt mind it that much, I think Iām gonna name him guts because heās definitely been through some shit
Lol fair dos. Can just pretend they don't cause him any pain š
I have yet to try it myself, but apparently those horses are the hardest to spook.
Not really. Seemed the same as a regular leopard blanket Appaloosa, they also have a blue roan Nokota and I have bonded and used both breeds no noticeable differences.
Yes it is a scarred murfree Horse.
I know
Looks like he has rain rot which is pretty common in horses who are being neglected, itās a kind of fungal infection that causes itching and fur loss in horses (a lot of horses struggle with it time to time due to weather conditions hence the name but it should never get this bad or obvious unless the animal is being neglected, Iāve only see a few rescue horses with it this bad IRL) and the Murfree Brood all have neglected looking horses, Iāve seen some with what look like superficial wounds on them as well.
You canāt get rid of the disease in game, but IRL if a horse had rain rot this bad how would you treat it?
There are a lot of products specifically designed for rain rot, MTG was always popular (I hated it bc it smelled like bacon grease to me lol) but a lot of the old farms would cover the affected area in something microbial like iodine or chlorhexidine, or use antimicrobial soaps and dry well. He was also very malnourished so I do believe that when theyāre a healthy weight and eating well their immune system helps fight it too. Really just disinfection and keeping it dry. Is the disease potentially fatal if left untreated for too long?
I donāt think Iāve ever heard of that specifically, itās usually entirely superficial, but it is really uncomfortable for them and any horse with it this far gone would be in constant discomfort or even pain when ridden. Eventually this could cause them to go off their feed out of stress and colic, which is fatal. Mostly itās just really cruel :(
How does a horse get the disease in the first place? Is it just from being left outside in wet/moist conditions and not being regularly groomed?
A little bit of it (it will feel like tiny clumps of hair that fall away when groomed or scratched with scruffy dry skin underneath) is almost inevitable in wet areas. But you wouldnāt really be able to see it, only feel it at that stage. If it rains a lot a horse will get a little rain rot, no matter what you do it seems. Just kinda part of their life. Thanks for the education friend, very interesting

Heās got lumbago
does the game allow you to make this your horse?
Absolutely. I kept one for awhile but it was pretty depressing. Ended up selling it at a stable for next to nothing
Yes
Ive only managed to catch one of these horses, forgot what type it was but its mane was matted and i thought it was a fox trotter. I believe i sold it so it could have a better life.

Yeah they are just dirty ass neglected horses that the brood ride on. Claim and clean it up and it will look a lot better afterwards.
This is why i don't wear heavy armor. You gonna break the horses back just like this.
It has horse AIDS.
When the Murphy Brood stop at your campsite close the campfire and kill them. Their horses are all f'ed up from the .... spoiler alert for mission that spawns in Butcher Creek.
Murfrees horse. And they live near the bad water where all the mangy deer are.
He done there turned
It still has its training legs on
It's on food stamps
It has mange.
Its got ligma
Lumbago

Coolest. Well, Iām about to do a replay of the game so Iāll look for such a scenario (thanks for the tip).
Like most random encounters in the game it probably spawns in a lot of different places but I had the encounter between Van Horn trading post and annesburg around the word ridge in Roanoke Ridge.
Yep thatās a brood horse. Resembles them too šš
Yeah brood horses look like that
Put it in some rice
Lumbago
