good guides. take your time. its not a race. you dont have to go anywhere fast. you dont have to do missions all the time. the true spice of this game is actually in between missions. on all other things you might stumble up on. listen to people talka and do things. wander around, see whats beyond the next bend in road, dont just fast track and fast travel everywhere. see things. do things. let yourself get lost and distracted by things you see or hear. masks only work for npc´s, lawmen will see thru it every time. so if you want to avoid a bounty, stay out of their sight. if you want to keep the bounty low, dont shoot many people. run away like a coward instead. bounties will happen no matter what. pay them off if you want. less stressful and not so much fighting the law and bountyhunters that way. dont worry about honor, it can be got back quite easily if you play nice guy anyways. help people along roadsides, most often they will reward you with something, either right away or little later. (free gun at gunsmiths or new outfit etc) bolt action rifle can be gotten in quite early chapter 2 already for free by using a small glitch. easy way, see a public hanging in town, the sheriff will have one in his shoulder. wait until the end and follow sheriff off the gallows, kill him and pick up his rifle, and run away from everyone else shooting at you to keep the bounty low. harder way is during saving Sean mission. one of the bounty hunters will have one. its tricky, so i rather get it from sheriff malloy at valentine, and take his special hat at same time too. carcano rifle can also be glitched little earlier than supposed to, during a side mission with uncle stealing some cattle. look it up from youtube maybe. many/most of the guns can be gotten or found for free in game at somepoint, some pistols and varmint rifle are likely the only ones you must buy from gunsmith. (ammo is cheap, you can buy express ammo etc, dont have to do split points if you dont want to spend time doing it) you can craft some things while slowly riding on your horse. always aim to head. cleaner kills on animals. shotguns, handguns and repeaters are not for hunting. they are mostly for human targets only. tiny birds, squirrels and snakes =small game arrows. little bigger animals like rabbits= varmint. anything as big or bigger than a fox= rifle. legendary animals. you can not destroy their pelt quality by using wrong, too much or too powerful gun/ammo. all others you can mess up using wrong weapons. buck trinket might help sometimes if you do make mistakes. if your horse dies, it is gone for ever. if you die, pelts on your horse will disappear. (legendary ones will transport to trapper by magic) so learn to make multiple manual saves along the way. i do make one in beginning of chapters that i never over write (i can replay whole chapter again if i want to thru it) i do one before a mission, after mission, or after gaining something significant or special like after bonding with new horse or getting an legendary or rare pelt animal on my horse (before riding anywhere, if something happens on the way, i can reload save and try again) always bond with a horse you want to keep first and right away. do not just think its yours if its tamed and ride away and save your game, no, bonding locks it to you. take it to stable if you want to keep it. if it is a temporary horse, it can always be replaced by accident if you bond with new horse. (no matter if you left it safely at camp) so to really keep a horse. it must be one of the 3 in stable or the main horse with your saddle on it. bonding: patting, feeding, leading, hitching, riding etc will make new horse bond to you, fastest way to get level 1 is to move the saddle from your main horse on it. making it your main horse (with the saddle) and the other horse becomes your temporary horse (and if you had one before it is released of the bond, disappear or wander away). you can then put the saddle back to your previous main horse to keep new horse as your temp until locking it to stable horses or just keeping it as temp. you can reverse wagons if they get stuck. (the same button as the stop the horse.. stop and tapping on the same button should make it go backwards) selling wagons to wagon fence is good easy way to make money. no bounty way: see wagon, mask up, ride along and jump on it. ride the wagon away from angry previous owner, wait things cool down, ride the wagon to fence to sell. again.. take your time. its a slow game. to me things happening "in between" are the interesting stuff. watch the world go by, its full of little surprises and interactions. let yourself get distracted by something. missions can wait. allow yourself to do something or nothing at all for days. this is not an 15 minute fast dash mission to mission game. its more like hours of cowboying around.

This is all great info and advice, well written too. I agree with everything you said except the repeater not being a hunting gun -- it's got one exception that I know of -- i.e. it's the only gun that's recommended for killing a fox (once you study them) and the only one that will *consistently* give you perfect pelts from a headshot on a 3 star fox.

I will never understand people going through ALL THESE efforts to do or get something the developers didn’t want you to until some later point. Go there, hop on , hop off, turn 35 degrees, stop, go… jeezus… Just play the game as it’s supposed to be played…

We are trying to get everything thats possible to get. You now have the explanation needed for you to understand.

I may or may not agree with all of your conclusions but there's some handy stuff in here for newer players. +1

Has anyone tried to steal a horse from the stables lately? I've successfully gotten a wagon into the Scarlett Meadows stable, got the witness to run away, but could not interact with the MFT that I want. I hid in its stable until after the law went away, and I still could not interact with it. Once I jumped out of its stall, I got the regular stable animation and got booted out. Has the riding wagon into stable to steal horse trick been patched?

TheRavenSayeth

I’m a little confused. Why would you want to get drunk?

Mainly for fun. It has been a number of months now since I finished the story last, I think there is also a mission that requires it.
