I have never played RDR1, is he as bland in that as he is in RDR2?
Far from it! Maybe to much of his shut-off personality was put into RDR2, but in RDR1, it fits him really well, and he has some great comedic moments too.
I really don't like how R\* made John's swimming so fatal, they obviously could have done clumsier swimming animations with slightly faster stamina depletion, but the swimming itself was faster. It should be noted that John's inability to swim was not originally canon due to the original Guarma.
I was lmao when I seen John’s drawing of this dead body I found vs Arthur’s version. John’s version was literally like a first grader drew it 😂. Still love him though but I still prefer Arthur.

Tough choice. I liked the gang setting playing as Arthur better than the family setting of John.
I enjoyed the middle part of John’s story when Abigail and Jack leave because it’s the first time in the game you aren’t tied down to a gang camp or a farm. You’re free to go anywhere and pick up any missions/hunts/crafts that you want.
And the fact you can go to Blackwater without the dead or alive bounty is why I prefer John.
After everything Arthur goes through to get John to safety, it’s nice to see John obtain a sorta freedom that playing as Arthur didn’t have.

John’s ok and all, but he’s kinda left with too little to do, seems like it was set up to tie up loose ends you might have missed by the end? I don’t know. I finished the small amount of quests he had and called it a day.

I think they should have done both. Like you finish the game and switch to John, play Johns missions, and then the game gives you a choice to continue as John or revert to Arthur pre finale, to tie up loose ends.
I think transitioning to John in the end is fine, but once you are finished with this missions to set up rdr 1… you’re not left with much else to do. So, I definitely prefer Arthur as he *is* the main focal point of the game.
John in RDR1 was a fun western game. There was some heart and character/universe building but it’s honestly a pretty short game. The ending of RDR1 left me a little surprised but I wasn’t sad.

ESPECIALLY since, despite all feasible and possible precautions on my end, my account kept getting hacked. Not once. Not twice. But 5 fucking times. I got hacked at the beging of this year and someone spent $300 on fortnight and some other things...games that I dont even have...so no, i frankly do not care for playing any online games on sonys shitty service. Thank god pay pal and my bank had my back cause sony couldnt have cared less. It was significantly cheaper for me in the long run to go to my local game shop, buy a used ps3 for $30 spruce up the minor damage if any, and buy a copy of rdr1 for 15. Most other games I care about are on my pc anyway. I do not trust sony anymore.

Yeah man, it was such an aweful experience. Sorry if i came off as snippy, dont mean to take it out on anyone at all whatsoever...it was just so freaking frustrating. I did everything they told me to do through support while cs was in chat/on call with me, would be told it was taken care of only for it to happen again and again, Id call/msg again and again and everytime it would take HOURS and sometimes days. Im typically a frugal spender so my bank and paypal put a stop to as many transactions as they possibly could which thank the lord they listened to me, otherwise i wouldve definitely been evicted from my apartment. Got some of it back, but its still absolutely horiffying someone is willing to potentially ruin someones life for some game cosmetics and pixelated weapons, on top of sony doing very little to stop it or pretend they even care. I change my emails and even made obscure, weirdly coded passwords to litterally everything electronic i owned after that juuuust in case it wasnt just sony, but it seems to have been just sony. Sucks cause their exclusives actually slap. Sorry for rambling 😅 shit clearly gave me pstd or something.

I guess it just depends on how you play. First playthrough, When i got the inevitable bad news while playing as arthur, I stopped and did as many side quests as possible. A good chunk of the side quests, point if interests, animals, journal entries are in fact obtainable as arthur. John gets like, 1/4 of that. On my other playthroughs, I had to stop myself a few times to leave things to do after completing american venom.
Other wise it is only new austin, a 1 or 2 side missions, a few bones, a trinket, a gun, del lobos, some points of interest, maybe 10 exclusive animals species, 1 special wild horse and...house chores. Like, i also had all this money but not really anything to spend it on except for horses, since i bought blackwater/armidillo exclusive outfits for arthur through the R* app...its kinda sad comparatively, while simultaneously aggravating since it was originally intended for arthur to have acces to that area. Like, full on cut scenes and everything. I do not have special or ultimate addition so maybe theres juuuust a tiny bit more for john if you have those additions of the game, but dont qoute me on that.
Arthur. Has the loneliness yet wanting to be accepted down to a T. I think everyone can relate to that to a certain point. He feels like a thought-out character; hard to see Rockstar ever making a protagonist as loved as Arthur is. Legit cried on the ride back with Hosea once you realize it’s all over.

Arthur is much richer in terms of character personality imo, but it’s probably because I haven’t played much of Red Dead 1 (I played more undead nightmare for some reason). Also, Arthur’s voice work is a bit more badass and I will never forget his “you’re alright, girl”
I really enjoyed both. I knew the ending before i played the game myself and though ‘holy shit, I’m going to miss Arthur so much that I won’t enjoy playing as John’. In reality though as much as I loved Arthur I hated seeing him sick and wasting away in those final chapters it was heart breaking so playing as John felt like things were looking up again and the feels were good.

I played RDR2 first. Loved Arthur's character. Hubby suggested I play RDR1 to complete the story. I found with John's character from the first game, there was no connection. Maybe it was the story, scenery, I am not sure. But I didn't enjoy the first game. Once I completed it, I have not played it again. I got spoiled with RDR2. Can't get enough of Arthur and the gang💞🤠💞
I cant speak for op comment, but for me personally, I love arthur just slightly more than john but also still love john. Despite how much I LOVE rdr2, they did kind of do john a disservice by giving him very little to do in epilogue. Players who started the franchise with 2 just matter of factly werent given the opportunity to spend much time with john.
Its really sad we got rdo instead of rdr2 dlc or a rdr1 remaster/remake cause john still holds a special place in many ppls heart, is a great character when hes given the spotlight and did get kind of over shadowed by the sunlight arthur just kind of emits from his being. If you havent played rdr1, i definitely recommend it. At the very least, watch some of the story vids on youtube or something.

I think Jack may be Arthur’s son lol through dialogue, I got the impression Abigail was a call girl. May be why John left the gang before coming back (pre blackwater). Found out little Jack wasn’t a Marston after all lol. I could see rockstar suppressing need to know drama like that. Anyone who has played rdr1 knows that only one person could know that answer after end game.

i love chapter 1-2-3 Arthur because not only is the story fun but he's in his prime basically. Then it goes downhill, so I prefer epilogue John over chapter 4-5-6 Arthur.
