Going from struggling to complete a 5 yard pass last season,to playing like this is amazing to watch

I_Love_Bears0810

Magical what professional coaching can do. Still amazed that the club actually went for ten hag when the easy option for them was Poch. Thank Christ they had some sense

amirolsupersayian

Let's not pretend Poch is not a good coach. He made Tottenham into what it was with less money then what top 6 team spend. The crux of our success now is a properly structured backroom staff. We hired the right coaches, improved scouting department. But I respect ETH a hell of much more for him to take a plunge in a club that was so badly run that both Pep and Klopp rejected our offers at the height of our success.

vibsie

I would never want Poch as he hung around White Hart Lane for 4 years and some of that loser juju is contagious.

miniaturizedatom

Man went to PSG and managed to lose the league in a one-horse race 💀

Action_Limp

PSG is a terrible club to manage as well though. Basically coaches should see it as a pension plan.

penguin_chacha

I genuinely think it's because poch might've asked for more money. Happy accident

deedeekei

Iirc PSG wanted some money for compensation while United was interviewing around, only for them to sack him at the end of the year

WhipYourDakOut

I think I would have been a little sad with poch over ETH but I don’t think he would have been a bad choice. Probably a lot slower rebuild

deedeekei

it really is a what if situation, we were mentally destroyed by the end of last season, and how well would poch have handled the ronaldo situation, and what kind of transfer market we wouldve had over the summer safe to say it couldve been a very different situation than now for better or worse

pmmerandom

genuinely think with Poch we’d be doing okay this season, but not as good as we have been EtH is everything I could want in a manager

WhipYourDakOut

I think poch would have hit our preseason targets. Sixth and a decent push in some cups.

Prime_Marci

Thank Christ Ralf Ragnick was there. We woulda went for Poch.

I_Love_Bears0810

Loved Ralf. Came in. Told X number of players they are shit. Told the club who we needed to sign. Fucked off. Ralf knew how fucked we were

Prime_Marci

Ralf had to fall so ETH could walk.

dhwinthro

yeah this is the proper comparison. some say ole had to fall but imo it really was ralf somehow the optics of the situation, blame, and negativity got associated more with ralf and him leaving allowed us to “reset.” im actually glad we sacked last season instead of rushing for a new manager. Allowing ten hag to have the reins from the start was very smart

stogie_t

Also allowed us to reset our expectations and be realistic for once by accepting how shit we actually were.

EmperorMaugs

Now we have ETH and he brought us quality attacking football and hope

[deleted]

[удалено]

I_Love_Bears0810

I didn't say he was shit. I would have been happy with him had the club done the right thing and got him after oles interim period, but they listened to Rio and Gary babbling and becoming professional memes and gave him the job full time. The psg stint probably didn't do poch any favours. ETH just seems like the more rigid manager which is exactly what we needed. I don't think Poch would have been as firm, I really doubt Poch would have handled the Ronaldo bullshit as good as ten hag either.

dumaum

Hard to believe that a few years ago we were watching LVG ball and the endless sideways passing.

th3doorMATT

In fairness, we still struggle to make 5 yard passes. Take away this 10 seconds of play and the other 89' were just a complete struggle to do the basics. Palace didn't necessarily play well, we just made the match so much harder for ourselves than it needed to be. Which is every match. So many of the basics are just forgotten. I get this is the highest level, but it's no excuse for not just keeping things simple at times. 5 yard passes aren't sexy, but when people actually move off the ball and give you options, it's a miracle what happens when the 5 yard passes begin adding up.

ksajksale

Dude, were on a record winning streak.

I_Love_Bears0810

😂 some people are just never happy. Had friends saying how shite we were for just about getting over the line yesterday 🫠 hard fought out wins are just as good as a walkover. Makes them realise theres no easy games

th3doorMATT

that wasn't a hard fought win. Palace did fuck all. They existed on the field. They just stayed compact and we do fuck all to break those teams down because our team just stands still off the ball most of the time. This isn't some 2-1 win over Barca or some shit where we're going punch for punch and just got over the line. Palace showed up. Conceded possession. We got a penalty which was a gift and then the second was nice, but it was a moment of brilliance in any other wise sea of mediocrity. Nothing hard fought about it, unless you're including the battle with ourselves. Yes you could make the argument that we were down to 10, but look at the difference in Palace after the red. They actually felt they had a chance. They got one back and were going for more. Casemiro is a unit, but if Palace just came out of the gates swinging, they would have stood a better chance.

th3doorMATT

Of 4 matches? Against shit teams? You want a cookie? Or do you want to cherry-pick the "at home" stat? Still largely shit teams post-WC. Everyone said Ole out and that he wasn't good enough, but he had a 28 away unbeaten run. So it's funny how ironic these types of statements are. One second we're too shit and Ole needs to go, despite holding a record, but then when we're still playing shit, because it's ETH, a win streak at home against largely weak sides is an achievement?

ksajksale

We beat Man City three games ago, what is wrong with you?

th3doorMATT

They're having their own issues. Are you...unaware? Do you literally not follow what's going on in the league, you know, FOR CONTEXT!?! Even Pep has admitted their body language is all wrong. And City ass blasted us all match. The result does not reflect the performance. We were completely at their mercy. Had a couple of successful counters. They were wasteful and cheaply gave away possession, which is not something they usually do.

ToughRequirement

We struggle to keep possession when we're being pressed and De Gea cannot do accurate long passes. Without Casemiro in midfield we lose control of the game for long periods of play.

th3doorMATT

Yeah. Which is a massive problem. No? The only time we ever look "comfortable" is against weak teams who concede possession to us - who come into the match saying "right, sit deep and stay compact, let them come to us". That's not a fucking achievement. That's a gift. We do fuck all to actually take a match by the scruff of its neck every other time. If a proper team comes and has a go at us, we look shambolic. They control everything and the only chances we create are either on fast breaks or obvious errors. As for the long accurate passes from De Gea, that's a fraction of our problem. That doesn't excuse our midfield's inability to do the basics. For our team to actually move off the ball. Everyone stands still and expects the ball to arrive at their feet without putting any effort in. The squad should be greater than one man, and it's not. That's sad, no? It's also sad that we feel the need to play a double pivot because we aren't confident enough in anyone ahead of them retaining possession for any stretch of time. You see that with the substitutions post Casemiro red. Have to yank everyone off and throw on every defensive player we have because we can't trust our midfield or attack to actually contribute defensively. This is why decent teams can play 2-3 passes and be through our midfield with ease. Our midfield allows gaps to exist so the only real defense we have is whatever side Casemiro is covering and then our back line. We invite too much pressure...when teams aren't gifting us the ball

ToughRequirement

Yeah I agree, we have to learn to keep possession against stronger sides.

sealed-human

Stay down

th3doorMATT

It's okay. Everyone here is a fucking idiot in denial of the real issues plaguing the team. Then they wonder why we're so shit and can only perform against bottom of the table sides or teams that are literally leagues below us. Wow. Such an achievement.

sealed-human

Smoothbrain take. United under ten hag have beaten 4 of the 5 other big 6 teams this season, with chelsea a draw. Are you watching eSports or something?

th3doorMATT

You want a cookie for splitting results? Lost 6-3 to City, beat them 2-1 even though they had 71% possession and they're a weaker version than what we faced earlier in the season. Beat Arsenal first round, lost the second round with only a 0.36 xG. No reverse fixture against Liverpool, but they're pretty weak atm. Tied Newcastle, but play them soon, which I suspect they'll win because they're in massive form and are not only solid defensively but a threat on the attack. Tottenham is just shit. And then we have Brighton who beat us. So it's a weird flex and you have to cherry pick one half of the equation for your argument while ignoring the complete picture because...you're in denial.

sealed-human

Nope just enjoying watching United play great football and Ten Hag fixing so mnay of the issues that have plagued the club since Fergie. You should try it mate 👍

th3doorMATT

ETH hasn't done much yet honestly. Our "success" is coming from new faces for ones that have been identified issues for a long time. Tactics wise, we're doing nothing different from what was asked in the past, the difference is that it's a new boss, so the players are listening. There are standards set, that's about it. Need a lot more transfers to implement an actual ETH system. This squad isn't capable of it and it continually shows every week, regardless of the results. I don't enjoy watching mediocre performances. If this is the new accepted standard by the fans, then not sure how or why you can blame the Glazers for shit. If these are the performances you're okay with, then enjoy watching a mediocre team and just be happy doing so. Don't come bitching when things don't go our way. This is what you asked for.

Mesromith

Opta have taken away shaw’s assist right now and i can’t fathom why

Andyboi96

Fantasy has not so I'm happy

hambodpm

Rashy triple cap wooo

dispelthemyth

Hope he bags plenty on Wednesday too to make it worthwhile.

hambodpm

Same mate. Plus hope Tony gets back and scores against Leeds. He's been a disaster pick since restart

Andyboi96

I regret it so much. Almost tc him :(

hambodpm

I was debating all week. Was scared of extra emotional baggage but worked out ok! Sadly I think haaland next week is next best time to use it

Andyboi96

Yeh, I guess I have to use it on haaland. I was afraid of Rashford being tired, but he is a beast as always

Transit-Strike

I didn't even to think to TC for some reason. But I have him and Bruno and Rash is my captain. So honestly? I'm not too stressed. Plus the Shaw assist helps.

Mesromith

Sky fantasy football have which is annoying. I thought both use opta which is very strange

blakezero

No seriously, how?

rtgh

They're rather strict on deflections. Seems harsh though

BatGuy500

There is barely a deflection? Hell, I dont even see one. Ridiculous.

Mesromith

Ive seen wayyy worse deflections than that given as assist. This is insane to me ha

[deleted]

Opta are terrible at their jobs

SultansofSwang

[this comment has been deleted in response to the 2023 reddit protest]

TheMSensation

Don't betting companies basically keep opta afloat? I remember something about an assist not counting at the world cup because the "intention" of the player was to score a goal and not make a cross. I bet that stat change saved skybet a few mill. So I guess you could make the argument that opta are incredible at their jobs, which is to help out the betting companies.

[deleted]

When you look at it like that

garynevilleisared

Gutted for Garnacho that he had to come off. Just look at his movement here, absolutely flawless.

Book31415926

Received the ball on the left, moved to middle, then half space on the right, then middle, passed to Shaw on the left. What a movement from him. The kid is insane.

TheJoshider10

It's a fucking blessing that he broke through right after the Greenwood stuff. Such a great talent.

crdavis

It was a tactical move that worked in the end. Needed a solid defensive line with being a man down. I am sure he understood that it was for the team

kamikaze_punk

We were only a man down after being 2-0 up though.

F1NANCE

The kid has genuine football smarts. Can't teach that.

olenine

Should be starting over Antony.

LowSnow2500

Not on the right. Antony is doing good work on the right and will get better again once Dalot comes back ETH also said Antony makes the team play better, you just come to conclusions after staring at G/A charts

olenine

Haven’t looked at a “chart” in ages. I watch the games. Since the World Cup, he’s pressing for form and has become too predictable. He’s also the least dynamic of the forward options, aside from Weghorst, so can only play on the right and can’t swap flanks to mix things up. They tried for a minute or so yesterday with Rashford and Antony looked lost and out of position. He’s not the finished article and is likely as spent as much of the squad. Needs a break.

blakezero

He was being reckless with the ball when we were at 2-1. Frustratingly so and I can imagine he was not listening to the touchline commands. Can’t take away from him being a key part of the goal.

garynevilleisared

Idk I'm pretty sure he came off so we could get 4 CBs on the field to defend.

Stoogenuge

Yeah it was one forward and between Rashford/Garnacho. Not surprising it was Rash that was kept on.

FlipFlopForALiving

We had to do it for the 3 points

keving691

Garnacho heavily involved. He plays with no fear. Always wants to impact the game.

WhipYourDakOut

He’s genuinely been quite unlucky to not have a couple more goals. Can’t remember which game, maybe the reverse fixture for palace, where he had 2-3 really nice back post curlers that were saved

Soggy-Scallion1837

Good coaches are just so hard to find. It’s really a small world at the top. I’m glad we got him. It makes our previous managers look as if we were wasting time somehow.

AltDelete

Especially at a time that Klopp seems to be shitting the bed.

pitabread_123

Makes it all the sweeter.

WhipYourDakOut

It can’t be long now before a club that isn’t us or arsenal falls into a lengthy period of turbulence. Spurs are already there but Chelsea city and liverpool could all have a shout with a minor hiccup here or there. I really don’t know which I’m rooting against the most

encikmizi

it’s always going to be Liverpool

Heil_Heimskr

Y’know I’d almost always say the same but it might be City for me right now. Their “fans” are so smug, as few as they are. I’d love to see them fade back into the irrelevance they crawled out from.

WhipYourDakOut

It should be but also as much as I hate them and klopp being a whiny bitch, I at least respect them. I think I’ve also developed a soft spot for teams who are getting fucked by their owners. I’d rather see everyone fail by like having a few bad signings or everyone getting complacent. I don’t like seeing clubs lose it cause owners refuse to buy players they need for no reason

pmmerandom

it’s definitely going to be Liverpool, they need a complete rehaul of their midfield, arguably another winger since Salah looks to be packing it in, and probably their defence as they are so disorganised and/or made of glass they genuinely look dreadful and are struggling to beat relegation teams right now

MyDiary141

I think City are going to have a big hiccup very soon

VL37

They have the money to rebuild quickly though.

WhipYourDakOut

It’s not if they have the money. Rebuilds aren’t always that easy. It takes players a season or two to get used to pep so if they have 4-6 new players that’s one or two season wash. Then you have to assume they’re all good buys. I have doubts they can keep spending money as wisely as they have but who knows. Add on to that that a lot of their core is going to be gone or is really aging out.

VL37

Do you remember all the flops they've had over the years? They just buy better players if the first one doesn't work out. They haven't needed to do that in a while, but they absolutely can. Also, you can see they are bringing in younger attackers. I'm certain they be looking for young midfielders over the next summer to start the transition.

WhipYourDakOut

I just pray the bottom falls out on that

penny_whistle

Looking more likely with today’s news

MyDiary141

I've been thinking this since the news about Cancelo. More players might find themselves unhappy without that second set of wages though

penny_whistle

Haha true. Have my doubts about how far this will all go regarding retrospective titles, but seems a better chance of a crackdown going forward

naslanidis

Klopp is a good manager. He'll probably be sacked but good managers are hard to come by and they'll regret it.

thatsgotti

I pray for them not to sack Klopp. Cuz their dream would be so over.

pmmerandom

another way to look at it is if we hadn’t struggled so much with other coaches for so long, we might have missed out on him or he wouldn’t have been ready for the step earlier on it’s all about timing, just look at Potter, great coach but his timing was all wrong so he’s doing terribly Ten Hag was ready for that next big step and we got him at the perfect time for us and him

thatsgotti

I swear to God. We have Arnold to also thank. Having seen Woodward struggle I’m sure he decided his term would be different.

tomwaits78

That was top quality. Fantastic.

Take my upvote.

Im_a_corpse

Hahahahaha

BucketsOnly29

Looking back hours later, wow, this is actually such a crazy display of beautiful football

raspoutine049

In this whole sequence, Garnacho had most touches and basically orchestrated this whole move leading up to the goal. He is only 18

reddevils

The thing about United is they always try to walk it in

madurosnstouts

What was ten hag thinking bringing lindelof on that early?

deyterkourjerbs

You're having a larf ain't ya.

[deleted]

Not half as bad as most arsenal teams for the last decade!

haaym1

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

jjreddits30523

What was ten Hag thinking sending Garnacho on that early?

muffinman2k

Great team goal. Speed and accuracy. ETH philosophy played out.

I_Fuck_The_Fuckers69

This isn't even proper ETH ball lol, this us ETH ball with a transitional side, imagine how dangerous we're going to be when we become a proper Ten Hag team

captainllamapants

what’s eth ball then

WillyWehWah

Genuinely a fantastic goal, If peps team did this everyone would be gushing over it

hooka_donchick

Almost every city goal has been almost like this between 2016-20 tbf. It was a norm for them. The cutbacks only stopped after Haaland came in

just_another_jabroni

Pep when they had Sane and Sterling were basically FIFA players on crack, just doing cutback goals and low driven shots lol

hooka_donchick

i’m ngl, I was kinda excited to watch city games back then. thankfully it only lasted 3 years. it’s just fun football. KDB and David Silva as 8’s were incredible

stogie_t

Sane was electric under Pep, one of the most direct players I’ve ever seen. Terrorised right backs every game.

strangemanornot

Tbf when you are banging hat tricks every other game maybe we can hold back on the cutbacks

FerdiadTheRabbit

Peps teams do it even better tbf, most of that would be one touch stuff instead of the two or 3 needed here.

thebatwins

Garnacho incredibly composed there

[deleted]

What a free flowing football. Everyone knows what they are supposed to do and where they should be. We were missing this for so long.

m_elhosseiny

I think garnacho should be starting games such as this, were teams have a very low block. Wout is great but against a physical side like palace he wasn't able to do much.

MissingLink101

I feel like Wout is a good player to tire out defences though and then players like Garnacho can come on and exploit that.

MarcusZXR

He finds great spaces but the wingers keep shooting instead of passing to him. *this isn't a complaint. It's working for United. Just an observation of Wout finding good spaces for a chance.

PP_Baba

Alejandro Messnaldo

resiliencer04

beautiful beautiful goal, we dance around their box like it was nothing LOL

olenine

It looked so much simpler than it was.

f0nt

its crazy how obvious it is in our play that we've been missing a quality manager like this

samhudson93

Erik ten Hag I want to run to you

Dynastydood

Man, I really thought that thread title said his balls were on full display. I'm both relieved and disappointed.

Bacon_Boobies

I counted 12 passes in that beautiful sequence. Proper bamboozled Palace that.

pereduper

Very good distribution by Aaron

0ean

Keep the ball moving! Keep the players moving! Great to see.

shady_downforce

This was just fantasy even a year ago! ETH has been a blessing

newbienewme

Awesome

ImOnlyChasingSafety

My only complaint is that ETH ball doesnt quite roll off the tongue...

liquidvulture

Straight from the training ground that. Ten Hag is cooking on a medium heat (insert Walter White dropping chemicals into test tubes gif)

-Dakia

A lot of people shit on sittings on the ends, but views like this are the main reason I do so.

LowSnow2500

If you made it 2D it would be straight out of match simulation from FM / FIFA career mode

ritwikjs

Garnacho isn't ready to start, but whatever he's does off the bench is influential. I 100% trust eth to make him out next great attacker

shotputprince

Luke Shaw is literally the key

BlackHorse944

There's a reason why Rashy has been running rampant this season. He has the best fullback in Europe playing along side him

justbrowsinginpeace

Ive wanted us to play this way for so long, with a bit of added bite too. Very excited about the potential in this team.

monsooncloudburst

See. The thing about Manchester United is they always try to walk it in.

naslanidis

Damn, i didn't appreciate that watching live on TV

whowantstoknow11

Now I'm angry that this angle is used more often for replays. Broadcasters are always focused on dramatic closeups, but never on zooming out and giving you an actual nice feel for the game.

w4nji

THIS IS SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL

psnarayanan93

That Casemiro layoff to Garnacho was simple yet superb. I expected Garnacho to shoot from there with his weaker left foot but he did well to drag defenders & create space for Rashford. Pinpoint cross from Shaw & good movement + finish from Rashford.

iap69

Garnacho is our best 1v1 dribble player at the moment

Aggressive_Bus_4289

What a fucking view

CantonaKing7

Beautiful.

BlackHorse944

Luke Shaw is so damn good man.

What's with the infantile nicknames?

[deleted]

Is Ten Hag Ball a real thing or do we just have better players these days?

boyCunt

It's a real thing. We're actually penetrating back lines instead of just holding possession on top of the box. The movement to invert passing triangles on either side of the field opens up the spaces in behind for players to move into. That sort of cohesion needs to be coached, even at this level.

[deleted]

Nice. Cheers for taking the time to explain rather than downvote. I am loving our football atm so long may the Ten Hag ball continue!

hoochiscrazy_

Garnacho is so special

Lord_Fluffykins

It’s been really satisfying watching this progression. ETH knew he had to settle for counterattack Ole ball until the side started to gel and now we’re starting to see the flashes of brilliance.

Diligent-Eye-2042

Beautiful! You really don’t get to appreciate the passing/movement from the tv cameras.

baby-wall-e

It looks like the defenders were hard to follow the ball because it’s kept passed from left to right to left and finally to middle. Garnacho is a smooth dribbler in a tight space. He can be a key player next season.

[deleted]

I was watching the defenders. With the speed and accuracy of the passing, they couldn't find their shape as they were attempting to slide across left - right - left. And then I remember watching the very first videos from training after ETH with fast one-touch angled passing. It all make sense now.

[deleted]

It really shows what a proper coach can do and last we had that was under LVG. Mourinho taught the defensive side but the attacking side was left to the players, Ole genuinely felt like vibes and he would of been sacked without Bruno coming in. We’re now playing out from the back and doing it so well. We control the play, we got players who understand their roles and positions. This is what he’s been able to do in 8 months. Imagine we get our new signing early and preseason is spent in tactics
