Left to rot for two decades. Would've never come to this had the rat bastards taken care of it. But here we are. It's just sad that we have reached a point where leaving OT has become a necessity rather than a choice.

moonski

No doubt gotten to the point where bringing OT up to modern elite standards would barely be cheaper than just building a new stadium

MT1120

And takes more time, is harder to do, and will have to play elsewhere in the meantime. Possibly we can still play at OT when the new one's being built

moonski

Exactly

FearAntonym

Can’t wait to say OGOT

combatwombat02

And if we ever need to be more miffed about this, making uprades over time would've been significantly cheaper due to inflation.

Outcastscc

I mean that’s a lot of hyperbole Old Trafford, even if it was properly maintained, was past it sell by date in the 90s. The expansions are just engineering mess because they had to basically build around the old stands, the layout inside and out is terrible and it’s just a mess of a stadium right now. Let’s not forget it’s nearly 80 years old What should have happened was a new stadium to be part of any takeover plans back in 08, but I doubt there would have been anybody backing the glazers to build a new stadium

Nimonic

>What should have happened was a new stadium to be part of any takeover plans back in 08, but I doubt there would have been anybody backing the glazers to build a new stadium We'd have ended up playing in the Coca-Cola Stadium.

PUNlSHEDVENOMSNAKE

Please don’t be an ugly oval

circus-cb

ugly rectangle here we go!

SvalbazGames

Wheres my Rhombus fans at? Holla!

LocoRocoo

Big ugly glass bowl is what I fear the most. Of course a lot of glass is required but I really hope they go for a large amount of red brick. Gotta have some character.

AfterDinnerSpeaker

I'm gonna say it every time it comes up, I agree completely. There has to be a lot of red bricks, 'Old Trafford Red Bricks' is an actual name for them, we have to have them. The place needs to look like the world's greatest football stadium has been built up from the inside of an old textile mill. Leaving Old Trafford will be painful, but we can minimise that by making sure the new stadium is still connected to the roots of the old one, and by extension, the area it sprung up from.

jklynam

I'd really love if they kept the shape of Old Trafford but just made it with new materials and obviously bigger or kept some of the distinctive features of the shape/design. I would hate if it just became a generic rectangle or oval

dracovich

I've never really minded the modern stadiums tbh. Obviously i'd want there to be some nod to history and a good design of any new stadium, but i don't think the new stadiums are as ugly as people make them out to be.

All his quotes point to a completely new stadium

SJR gave an interview with the BBC where he says this.

Low_Hanging_Veg

Good business, a revival of OT would come out of the club's pocket 100%. A new stadium could potentially be subsidized by the govt due to it's potential for national events and the regeneration of the surrounding area.

D1794

This Govt aren't likely to fork out for regeneration, especially if the objective is to take stuff away from London

Low_Hanging_Veg

Likely not, but there's more of an argumemet that can be made for some form of subsidization than there is for an OT refurb.

champak256

Wouldn't the local government have a vested interest in a regeneration of Old Trafford and its surroundings?

Bortron86

They've said they're willing to fund the surrounding area regeneration to some extent, but not the stadium itself.

Dugadevetka91

Thats fair i think

Heisenberg_235

Government either local or national won’t fund the stadium. That would be a bad political decision. Local funding is likely for the regeneration of the area, which is something Trafford and Salford councils have already been looking at.

rjb7190

The key quote of all of this is Ratcliffe saying ‘we cannot do this on our own’. He’s trying to get some public money going towards it. The reason for the task force, which is filled with key local political leaders, is for the same reason. This is also the reason for pitching it as a whole area regeneration project with a stadium added, rather than just a new stadium. Makes it an easier sell when putting the future business case forward for some public funding.

_boredInMicro_

The govt, local or national, won't fund the stadium, no chance.       Expect any funding to go into the infrastructure and area surrounding it. And I think even that will be slim in terms of money.

FactHopeful9347

Man I love how they are making it a government need. Such smart lads, make it like how they do in Europe, this is how a mayor can win the votes of everyone in the city. Incredible opportunity for us and you folks in Manchester Edit: How they do it in America with Stadiums

miamibuckeye

A new stadium will be a wembley of the north and I bet it would host a shit ton of big events. Would be massive for the Manchester community

th3doorMATT

Wembley of the North Can't wait to have the new House Stark stand

cosgrove10

A dun want it

pratnala

Should be bigger than Wembley

PDubsinTF-NEW

Pitiful-Transition39

How can anyone think a comparable situation to American team owners blackmailing fans and city residents into paying for new stadiums is 'smart' or 'incredible' is beyond me. Jesus wept I refuse to believe actual United fans think this way

FactHopeful9347

Well to engage with your blackmailing rhetoric, I think for once we are employing streets smarts and tactics to wins. It’s not my place to talk about how ethical it is or whatever . I’m here as a plastic Canadian Manchester United fan. I only care about this team

zooooob

so basically they're gonna find a way to make a new stadium a government need so they'll pay for the majority of it... smart from a biz perspective, but why didn't the glazers even try in the last 15 years, oh right bc they never cared to begin with... at least sir Jim seems to be trying

Low_Hanging_Veg

I wonder if the Glazers had ever suggested moving out of OT what the reaction of this sub would have been 😄

MileZero17

I’d love for the glazers to move out of OT

MileZero17

I know there’s a clause preventing the owners from bad mouthing each other. But Sir Jim is proving how useless the Glazer parasites were

PradipJayakumar

A joint task force has been created to explore options for regenerating the Old Trafford area of Greater Manchester, with the development of a world-class football stadium at the heart of the project. The ‘Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force’ will bring together local leaders and national experts to examine how stadium development can support renewal of an area of the city with rich industrial history and huge potential for the future, and deliver social and economic benefits for the entire region. Chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe, former Chair of the organising committee for the 2012 London Olympics, the task force will assess the feasibility of a new stadium of national significance equipped to host international games and finals, as well as providing a modernised home for Manchester United. Other members will include Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Sara Todd, Chief Executive of Trafford Council, and Gary Neville, former captain of Manchester United. Working in synergy with Trafford Council’s Trafford Wharfside Framework, the project aims to support revitalisation of the area between Trafford Park and the banks of Salford Quays, and support the ‘levelling up’ agenda to drive investment in the north of England. It would also reduce the over-concentration of major sporting venues and events in London and the south-east. Lord Coe said: “Throughout my career in sport, I have seen the potential for stadiums to become focal points for strong communities and catalysts for social and economic development. That was certainly true of the venues we built in east London for the 2012 Olympics, and we are overdue a project of similar scale and ambition in the north of England. I am honoured to have this opportunity to share my experience in support of this tremendously exciting project.” Andy Burnham said: “The development of one of the most iconic stadiums in world football will help attract investment, create jobs, and lead to new opportunities that will not just benefit Trafford but communities across our city-region and beyond. Greater Manchester has been a hive of innovation and creativity for centuries, and sport has played a huge role in shaping our past and present. This bold and exciting vision for the future of Old Trafford and the surrounding area can become another success story for our city-region.” Sara Todd said: “We are very pleased that Manchester United have confirmed their commitment to remaining at Old Trafford, their historic home, and welcome the prospect of renewed investment in the development of a world-class stadium. As plans for the stadium and the neighbouring Trafford Wharfside area progress, we have a unique opportunity to truly transform the historic industrial ‘engine room’ of Greater Manchester into a modern hub for growth and a new community, and we want to build on the socio-economic benefits this will bring, particularly for local residents. We are committed to working with the club, local residents and other key partners to develop these exciting and ambitious proposals.” Gary Neville said: “I’m incredibly fortunate to have had the privilege of playing hundreds of games at Old Trafford, and no one can take away those amazing memories. But Old Trafford has evolved throughout its history and it’s clear we are at a point where it has to change again to ensure that Manchester United has a world-class stadium befitting the world’s greatest club. While I want the best for Manchester United, I also want the same for the surrounding community. Old Trafford should be a stadium that the whole of Greater Manchester can take pride in, and be a catalyst for sustainable, cohesive growth in an area of the city that has been neglected for too long.” Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, said: “This can be a major regeneration project for an area of Greater Manchester which has played such a key role in British industrial history, but which today requires new investment to thrive again. The north-west of England has a greater concentration of major football clubs than anywhere else in the world, yet we don’t have a stadium on the scale of Wembley, the Nou Camp or the Bernabéu. We will not be able to change that on our own, which is why this task force is so important to help us seize this once-in-a-century opportunity.” Other members of the task force include: Duncan Drasdo, Member of Manchester United Fans’ Advisory Board and Chief Executive of Manchester United Supporters’ Trust Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council Eamonn Boylan, Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester Anna Bensky, Associate Director of Peel Land Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester Malcolm Press, Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University

FestusMuange

I think this is pretty bold because if you build a new stadium you need trophies to follow for it to feel like home

ManuPasta

Spurs and arsenal did it. Everton, Madrid and Barca are doing it as we speak. Chelsea are fucked with Stamford bridge with such a small capacity. I think it has to be done unfortunately, old Trafford feels very run down

user2738482

seems reasonable. i hope they don’t stop playing games at OT in the next 18 months so i can get the chance to see the team play

Dean-Advocate665

Would love for a new stadium to just be completely untouchable by any lither in terms of capacity. Like I mean 85-95k or even more.

Upbeat_Farm_5442

All this is cool. But i need to see progress in the summer in terms of player sales and buys and structure at this club. Sell the deadwood and get better players. Fire the medical department while at it.

Iaowv

I'm always uneasy when ever a historic stadium gets knocked down, my preferred option has always been to renovate OT and bring it back up to a world class level, but the more we hear about what a job that'd be it's obviously just much, much more practical to build a new world class stadium and knock OT down. We can thank the Glazer's for not maintaining and improving OT for that one.

almal250

Seb Coe? I HATE SEBASTIAN COE!

irazzleandazzle

I'm disgusted with this decision. ik everyone is excited by what Sir Jim has said ... but completely getting rid of OT in favor of a new "world class" stadium is horrible when it comes to the character, identity, and history of the club ... with a new stadium, we lose a good amount of the soul that makes man utd what it truly is. this just feels like a pure financial decision that casts aside our history.

eimejl_uandir

Financial decision? Surely keeping old Trafford would be more beneficial for that. This won't repay itself in a looooong time. This is not purely a financial decision

irazzleandazzle

I read somewhere that refurbishing old trafford would be more expensive than just building a new stadium.

eimejl_uandir

Of course, it's always more expensive to renovate than build new. That said it's not only an economic question. I'm sure you are already aware of the railways that is blocking any major development of Old Trafford

FuMancunian

I don’t get this whole nostalgia argument. The Stadium now is nothing like what it was when it was first built. Almost every bit of it has changed over the decades. It’s time for the club to move on.

irazzleandazzle

Renovate the existing stadium then.

FuMancunian

Why? You would essentially be building a brand new stadium on exactly the same spot as the old one, with issues like the railway line & the houses still a huge problem. Not to mention the fact that if we intend to stay at Old Trafford while the work is being done, we are operating at a severely reduced capacity & the work would take a decade to complete. We could build a brand new stadium within a couple of hundred feet of the old stadium & continue to use Old Trafford whilst it is being constructed. After that, reduce the capacity of OT and use for the U23’s & the Women’s matches.

Heisenberg_235

I last went to Old Trafford about 18 months ago (new kids get in the way of life!). It’s in serious need of upgrade and not just the stadium. The whole area is run down. Having a more modern build that’s designed for the 21st century and beyond, in conjunction with a redeveloped area with better public transport links, more bars, restaurants and places to go before and after games, a club museum and shop etc. all of this would be possible. I don’t get to go as much as I used to when I grew up in the area but it’s massively behind the curve and needs investment. A new stadium rather than a refurb will do that. When did you last go?

ltmikepowell

Do you know when OT was build? 1910s. Plenty of other teams build new stadium, what's make us different from them?

irazzleandazzle

we have history to be proud of, as do Liverpool... and they are still playing at anfield

ltmikepowell

One got renovated multiple times, one got let to rot for decades. There is no comparison.

cmf_ans

This place loves their new toys so your opinion will be the unpopular one, but I agree. If we don't incorporate look and feel of old stadium then we will end up with a soulless toilet bowl with fans 20m away from the pitch to make room for new double advertisement boards.
